nib travel insurance in 30 seconds

Expert rating 3.5 out of 5. nib is an Australian health insurer that also sells travel cover, and since 17 September 2026 that travel book belongs to Allianz Partners: nib Life arranges the policy as an authorised representative of Allianz Global Assistance, which issues and manages it for the insurer Allianz Australia Insurance Limited. The current wording, effective 1 September 2026, puts overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses at $20 million on both international plans and personal liability at $5 million on Comprehensive. You can only buy it if your home is in Australia and your trip starts and ends here. It suits an older traveller wanting a single rich policy, because Comprehensive has no maximum age. It suits you less if you want the cheap plan: Essentials stops at 74, pays no accidental death, no travel documents and no theft of cash, and it is not designed for a cruise, a snow trip or a declared medical condition.

Our verdict

Is nib travel insurance still the same product now that Allianz owns it?

Yes, the product is unchanged, but the company behind it is not. nib travel insurance is now written on an Allianz policy wording, dated 1 September 2026, and its headline is $20 million of overseas medical and hospital cover on both international plans, not the unlimited figure older comparison pages still quote.

nib Group sold its Australian and New Zealand travel insurance businesses to Allianz Partners with effect from 17 September 2026, and confirmed in its own announcement of 1 October 2026 that it will keep selling nib-branded travel cover here through a long-term alliance with Allianz Partners. Practically, that means the brand on the certificate stays nib while the assistance line, the claims team and the insurer are Allianz. The product disclosure statement spells it out: nib Life Pty Ltd arranges the insurance as an authorised representative of AWP Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Allianz Global Assistance, which issues and manages it as agent for Allianz Australia Insurance Limited.

Read as a policy rather than as a brand, this is a solid, conventional Australian wording. The medical and assistance ceilings are high, repatriation sits inside the same $20 million pot, personal liability runs to $5 million on Comprehensive, and the Comprehensive plan has no maximum age, which is rare. What costs it points is the shape around that core. Cancellation is not a benefit with a number: it is a limit you pick and pay for. Luggage stops at $10,000 with a $750 ceiling on any single item that is not a computer, a camera or a phone, so one watch can use up the whole item allowance. A cruise, a snow trip, a quad bike or a declared medical condition each need a separate purchase, and customers rate the claims experience poorly.

Our rating of 3.5 out of 5 is the average of a strong contractual core and a weak buying experience. If you want one policy that will accept you at 78 and pay for a hospital stay in Bali without arguing about your age, nib is a sensible shortlist entry. If you are 30, going to Indonesia for a week and comparing on price, you should see what the rest of the market quotes for the same dates before you pay.

  • Overseas medical and hospital expenses of $20 million: The same ceiling applies on Comprehensive and on Essentials, and overseas emergency assistance carries a separate $20 million limit.
  • No maximum age on the Comprehensive Plan: Comprehensive, Domestic and Non-Medical are sold to travellers of all ages, where most Australian brands stop between 70 and 85.
  • Personal liability of $5 million: On Comprehensive. Essentials halves it to $2.5 million, which is still above what many budget plans carry.
  • An excess you can move at purchase: You can pay more to cut the base excess or pay less by raising it, and the figure you choose is printed on your certificate of insurance.
  • Allianz Global Assistance behind the phone number: Emergency assistance runs 24 hours on +61 7 3305 7499 from overseas, with claims lodged online through claimmanager.com.au.
  • Cancellation has no headline number: The limit is whatever you select and pay for at purchase, so two nib policies can carry wildly different cancellation cover.
  • A $750 ceiling on most single items: Computers, tablets and cameras get $3,000 and phones $1,000, but jewellery and watches fall under the $750 line inside a $10,000 luggage limit.
  • Essentials is a thin plan, and it stops at 74: No accidental death, no permanent disability, no alternative transport, no travel documents cover and no theft of cash, and it is not designed for cruising, snow sports or a declared condition.
  • Customers rate it 1.6 out of 5: Across 111 reviews on ProductReview.com.au, 87 per cent are negative, with claim handling and response times the recurring complaint.
  • Several ordinary holiday activities are a separate purchase: Cruising needs the Cruise Pack, snow sports the Snow Pack, and riding a moped or a quad bike the Adventure Pack, each with its own non-removable $500 excess on medical and cancellation claims.
Our methodology

Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated. For this page we read the nib Direct Travel Insurance product disclosure statement effective 1 September 2026 and its target market determination in full, and we priced our own shelf separately, so you can see which of the two every number comes from.

The plans

Which nib plan can you actually buy for your trip?

Four: Comprehensive, Essentials, Domestic and Multi-Trip, plus a Non-Medical Plan offered to travellers whose medical history cannot be covered. Only Comprehensive and Essentials are international single-trip plans, and which one you are offered depends on your age, your destination and how long you are away.

Comprehensive is the full policy and the one nib sells to any age. Essentials is the cut-down version, available only to travellers under 75 at the time the certificate is issued, and the target market determination is blunt about who it is not for: anyone cruising, anyone seeking cover for a pre-existing condition, anyone doing snow or adventure activities, and anyone who cannot pay a medical bill upfront and claim it back. Both run to a maximum journey of 12 months and both require a destination outside Australia.

The Multi-Trip Plan covers repeated journeys of 15, 30 or 45 days across a year and is also capped at 74. Domestic covers travel inside Australia for up to 69 days. Worth saying plainly, because the brand covers two very different markets: this page is about nib's travel policy, not about nib's health funds, which are a separate product with their own rules.

Check your eligibility before you compare prices

nib will only insure you if your permanent home is in Australia and you are a permanent resident, hold a valid Australian Medicare card, or hold a current Australian visa that is not a tourist or working holiday visa and that keeps an unrestricted right of re-entry after your trip. The journey itself must begin and end in Australia. If you are already overseas, a new policy is possible only by application before the current one expires, and never on a Multi-Trip plan or an Essentials plan once you are 75.

Benefit limits

What does a nib policy actually pay, benefit by benefit?

On a single Comprehensive policy: $20 million of overseas medical and hospital expenses, $50,000 of additional expenses, $10,000 of luggage, $5 million of personal liability and a cancellation limit you choose yourself. Essentials keeps the medical ceiling and cuts almost everything around it.

Source: nib Direct Travel Insurance product disclosure statement, effective 1 September 2026, table of benefits, single cover type. Amounts in Australian dollars.* A default cancellation limit applies unless you select one; the figure you choose is shown on your certificate of insurance and is the most nib will pay. Sub-limits inside it: $1,500 of travel agent cancellation fees and $2,000 for a relative's pre-existing condition.** Individual item sub-limits: $3,000 for computers, tablets and cameras, $1,000 for phones, $750 for everything else including jewellery and watches, and $200 an item up to $2,000 for items left in a locked vehicle.

Two details deserve more attention than they usually get. First, the $20 million figure replaces the word unlimited that older pages and third-party comparisons still attach to this brand: the 1 September 2026 wording caps it, at $20 million for a single or duo policy and $40 million for a family. Second, the benefits marked above as not applying inside Australia really do switch off: emergency assistance, medical and hospital expenses, funeral expenses, hospital cash allowance, alternative transport and travel documents are all overseas benefits, which is exactly why the Domestic Plan exists.

Beyond the basics

What do the packs and the other nib plans add?

Four optional purchases and three secondary plans. The packs are where a normal Australian holiday quietly falls outside the base policy: a cruise, a ski week and a scooter hire each need their own add-on before a claim will be considered.

Exclusions

What will the policy refuse to pay for, whatever you add?

The general exclusions split into two lists: things covered only if you bought the right pack, and things never covered at all. The ones that catch Australian travellers most often are cruising, motorbikes and scooters, undeclared medical history, and private treatment chosen when a public hospital was available.

  • Cruising without the Cruise Pack: Any claim connected with your participation in cruising is excluded unless the pack was purchased before you left.
  • Mopeds, scooters, motorcycles and quad bikes: Excluded without the Adventure Pack, and excluded in any case if you drive without the right class of Australian licence for that vehicle.
  • An undisclosed pre-existing condition: Cover exists only where you applied and Allianz Global Assistance agreed in writing, with the accepted conditions printed on your certificate. Signs or symptoms still under investigation cannot be declared at all.
  • Private treatment when public care was available: If publicly funded treatment is readily available, including under a reciprocal health care agreement, choosing private care without approval is excluded.
  • Races, speed trials and endurance events: The carve-out is narrow: amateur running up to a full marathon and amateur triathlon up to a 1.5 km swim, 40 km ride and 10 km run.
  • Pregnancy at 24 weeks or more: Routine antenatal care, childbirth at any stage and care of a newborn are never covered, whatever nib has agreed in writing.
A government travel alert can cost you the claim

The wording is explicit: cover may be affected or declined where a claim arises because you did not follow an advice or warning issued by an Australian government for your destination, including travelling while a Do Not Travel alert is in place, and including where you were formally exempted from a travel ban. Check Smartraveller for your destination before you buy and again before you fly.

Pregnancy is treated as a pre-existing condition from the moment you buy, which surprises people. If you have had complications with this or a previous pregnancy, or you are expecting more than one child, you have to apply for cover through the medical assessment. Otherwise the policy covers an unforeseen pregnancy event occurring before the 24th week, and nothing after it.

Price

How much does nib travel insurance cost, and what moves the number?

nib publishes no rate card: every premium is quoted on your own trip, and on 21 October 2026 its quote service was unreachable, so we are not putting a nib figure on this page that we could not read ourselves. For scale, the same seven days in Indonesia for one traveller aged 34 was priced across our own shelf on that date at between $39.40 and $121.96.

What the wording does tell you is what the number is built from. nib prices on your destinations, the length of the journey, the amount and type of cover you ask for, the number of travellers and their ages, the gap between purchase and departure, any pre-existing conditions declared, and the likelihood of a claim, plus commissions, discounts, stamp duty and GST. Two levers are yours. The cancellation limit you select is a real cost driver, because it is the only benefit with no fixed ceiling. And the base excess is adjustable at purchase: pay more to lower it, or accept a higher one and pay less.

HelloSafe data, October 2026. Real quotes captured on 21 October 2026 for one traveller aged 34, 7 days in Indonesia from 14 to 21 December 2026, departing Australia, no cancellation cover selected. Amounts in Australian dollars; contractual ceilings are converted from euros at the live exchange rate and shown as approximate. This table prices our own plans for the same trip. It is not a nib quote and must not be read as one.

One warning about excesses, because it is where a cheap quote gets expensive. The base excess applies to each event causing a payable claim, including medical and cancellation, but not to emergency assistance, funeral expenses, hospital cash allowance, travel delay, luggage delay or theft of cash. If you declare a condition and accept a medical excess, that figure replaces the base excess rather than adding to it. But the $500 excess attached to Snow Pack and Adventure Pack claims is non-removable and sits on top of nothing: it simply applies.

Claims

How does a claim get paid, and in what currency?

In Australian dollars, by direct credit to an account you nominate, at the exchange rate that applied when you incurred the expense. Claims are lodged with Allianz Global Assistance through claimmanager.com.au, and anything involving a hospital admission or an early return has to be reported to the assistance line as soon as possible.

  1. Call the assistance line first for anything medical. +61 7 3305 7499 from overseas, 1800 010 075 within Australia, 24 hours a day. Hospital admission and any early return on medical advice must be notified as soon as possible.
  2. Get approval before private treatment. If public treatment is readily available where you are, nib's wording requires Allianz Global Assistance to agree before private care is covered.
  3. Keep proof of ownership and value for anything you will claim as luggage. Receipts, invoices or valuations; statutory declarations are accepted only where direct proof is not reasonably available.
  4. Lodge the claim at claimmanager.com.au. The same portal handles medical, cancellation and luggage claims, with the certificate of insurance as the reference.
  5. Do not admit fault after an incident. The policy requires you not to accept liability, offer money or take legal steps without approval, or the claim can be reduced.
  6. Wait for payment in Australian dollars. Payment is by direct credit, converted at the rate that applied on the day you spent the money, with any excess deducted.
Luggage claims are paid on depreciated value, not replacement cost

The wording’s own worked example: a digital camera bought for $500 and owned for two years is depreciated by 20 per cent of the purchase price for each year of ownership, so the claim settles at $300. Budget for that gap before you rely on the $10,000 luggage line, and remember the $750 ceiling on any single item that is not a computer, a camera or a phone.

Customer reviews

What do buyers say once they have actually claimed?

Badly, and consistently. On ProductReview.com.au, Australia's main review platform, nib Travel Insurance scores 1.6 out of 5 across 111 reviews, with 13 per cent positive and 87 per cent negative, read on 21 October 2026.

The sub-scores point at the same place: customer service 1.6, value for money 1.5 and transparency 1.5. What recurs in the recent reviews is not the price or the ceilings, it is claim handling: rejections the customer did not expect and long waits for a decision. We could not find a Trustpilot profile for the travel product, so this is the single platform score we are willing to quote.

Treat that as sentiment, not as a coverage fact. Review platforms attract people who have just had a claim refused far more than people whose trip went to plan, and the scores above sit well below what the policy wording alone would justify. They are still worth reading before you buy, because a claim decision you disagree with is the part of this product you will remember, and because the handover to Allianz Partners means the service you read about in a 2025 review is not necessarily the service you will get in 2027.

Which number works from a hospital overseas?

Refunds

Can you cancel the policy and get your premium back?

Yes, in full within 14 days of your certificate of insurance being issued, provided you have not started the journey, do not want to claim and do not want to exercise any other right under the policy. That is the cooling-off period, and it is the cleanest exit.

After those 14 days you still get a partial refund on the same three conditions, calculated pro rata from the day you contact nib to cancel until the end date of your period of cover. Once a claim has been paid in part or in full, or once you want to make one, no refund is available at all. Policies cancelled because a COVID-19 border closure or a mandatory quarantine stopped the trip are handled under their own clause, with the pro rata calculated from the day you returned home.

The alternative

What else can an Australian traveller buy for the same trip?

If nib's quote comes back higher than you expected, or Essentials turns you away because of your age or a cruise booking, the useful move is to price the same dates across several insurers at once rather than re-quoting the same brand. Our travel insurance comparison does that in one form, and the three plans below are what it returned for a seven-day trip to Indonesia at the prices captured in October 2026. If you are weighing two Australian brands against each other, our 1Cover travel insurance review and our Cover-More travel insurance review read the same way as this one, from the policy wording up.

FAQ

What do Australians ask before they buy a nib policy?

  • Allianz Australia Insurance Limited (ABN 15 000 122 850, AFSL 234708). nib Life Pty Ltd arranges the policy as an authorised representative of AWP Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Allianz Global Assistance, which issues and manages it as the insurer’s agent. This is stated on the product disclosure statement effective 1 September 2026.

  • Yes. nib Group announced on 1 October 2026 that Allianz Partners had acquired its Australian and New Zealand travel insurance businesses with effect from 17 September 2026, and that World Nomads had gone to International Medical Group from 30 September 2026. nib said it will keep distributing nib-branded travel insurance in Australia and New Zealand through a long-term alliance with Allianz Partners, so the brand you buy today is still nib.

  • No. The wording effective 1 September 2026 caps overseas medical and hospital expenses at $20 million for a single or duo policy and $40 million for a family policy, on both the Comprehensive and Essentials plans. Pages that still say unlimited are quoting an older or a New Zealand document. An excess applies to the benefit.

  • The Comprehensive, Domestic and Non-Medical plans have no age limit. The Essentials Plan, the Multi-Trip Plan, the Adventure Pack and the Snow Pack are only sold to travellers aged under 75 when the certificate of insurance is issued.

  • Only if you declare the condition through the medical assessment and Allianz Global Assistance agrees in writing, with the accepted conditions listed on your certificate of insurance or your medical terms of cover. A medical excess may then apply, replacing your base excess rather than adding to it. Signs or symptoms that are still being investigated cannot be declared, and the Essentials Plan is not designed for anyone seeking this cover at all.

  • Not on the base policy. Cruising is excluded unless you bought the Cruise Pack, and snow sport activities are excluded unless you bought the Snow Pack. Both packs add a non-removable $500 excess to any medical or cancellation claim arising from those activities, and the Snow Pack is capped at age 74.

  • Whatever limit you select and pay for at purchase. A default limit applies if you make no selection, and the figure shown on your certificate of insurance is the most nib will pay for all cancellation claims combined. Two sub-limits sit inside it: $1,500 for travel agent cancellation fees and $2,000 where the cause is a relative’s pre-existing condition.

  • Only in limited cases. Your permanent home must be in Australia, and you must be a permanent resident, hold a valid Australian Medicare card, or hold a current Australian visa that is not a tourist or working holiday visa and that keeps an unrestricted right of re-entry after the trip. The journey itself must begin and end in Australia.

  • nib runs its own promotions from time to time and members of its health funds are sometimes offered a discount, but there is no permanent public code, and a percentage off a quote tells you nothing about what the policy pays. Compare the quoted premium against the same trip priced elsewhere, with the cancellation limit and the excess set the same way on both sides, before you judge whether a discount is good value.

  • Fourteen days from the day your certificate of insurance is issued, for a full refund, as long as you have not started the journey, do not want to claim and do not want to exercise any other right under the policy. After that you can still cancel for a pro rata partial refund on the same three conditions.

  • In Australian dollars, by direct credit to a bank account you nominate, converted at the exchange rate that applied on the day you incurred the expense. Luggage is settled on depreciated value: the wording’s own example depreciates a $500 camera by 20 per cent of its purchase price for each year of ownership, so after two years it pays $300.

  • The contract is backed by one of the largest insurers in Australia and the ceilings are high, so on paper the cover is dependable. The buying experience is where customers disagree: nib Travel Insurance scores 1.6 out of 5 across 111 reviews on ProductReview.com.au, with claim handling and response times the recurring complaint. Read the wording, set the cancellation limit deliberately, and price the same trip elsewhere before you decide.
