Which Türkiye permits actually require travel insurance?

Turkey visa insurance is compulsory on two routes only: the sticker visa issued by a Turkish consulate, which asks for at least 30,000 euros of medical coverage, and a Turkish residence permit. The tourist e-Visa asks for no insurance at all.

That one distinction is where almost every page on this subject goes wrong, and where the AI assistants that quote them go wrong too. The country is officially Türkiye, and it runs three separate entry routes with three separate rulebooks. Only two of them mention insurance.

HelloSafe, October 2026. Sources: the Turkish Consulate General in New York 2026 document list, the Turkish missions' published e-Visa conditions, and the Presidency of Migration Management circular of May 10, 2016.Check your own consulate's current document list before you file: wording varies between missions.

What follows is built from two things we did on October 24, 2026, not from a summary of other people's pages. We read the document lists two Turkish consulates publish for 2026 and quote them word for word. And we priced our whole travel catalog for a trip to Türkiye, then opened the contract data behind the plans that came back, so every ceiling and every exclusion on this page is the real one.

Our methodology

Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and coverage actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.

How much cover must a Türkiye sticker visa certificate show?

At least 30,000 euros, or the equivalent in US dollars. That figure comes straight from the 2026 document list of the Turkish Consulate General in New York, whose required document number five is "Proof of travel health/accident insurance, valid for at least 3 months" with "minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros or equivalent USD".

The same entry adds a second condition that most policies are not written to satisfy, and that no comparison site mentions: the coverage must include "transfer of the patient to nearest healthcare facility or residency address after discharge and transfer of body in case of death". A medical ceiling on its own does not clear that line. The certificate has to show a transfer guarantee as well.

  • A medical limit of at least 30,000 euros: Or the dollar equivalent. Read it as a floor, not a target: a night in a private Istanbul hospital eats into a figure that size faster than most applicants expect.
  • Patient transfer after discharge: The policy has to pay to move you to the nearest suitable hospital, or back to your home address once you are discharged.
  • Transfer of remains: The consulate names death coverage explicitly. Look for repatriation of remains on the certificate, not just medical expenses.
  • Validity that covers the whole stay: New York asks for a policy "valid for at least 3 months". Houston asks for one "valid through duration of stay". Buy for the full length of the trip and you satisfy both.
  • Your own name and surname on the document: "The documents such as travel insurance, flight and hotel reservations must contain the name and surname of the applicant/s." A family policy has to name every applicant.
Blue Mosque at golden hour, Istanbul — Turkey travel insurance hero

Two consulates of the same ministry word the validity rule differently, which tells you something useful: there is no single national template for this document, and the mission you file with has the last word. Print your own consulate's current list the week you apply. Türkiye is not alone in attaching a hard figure to entry, and the mechanics repeat: see mandatory travel insurance for Argentina and mandatory travel insurance for Cuba for two other countries that put a number in writing.

Sticker coverage

Which Turkey visa insurance policies can you actually buy for a short stay?

Five policies in our comparison returned a live price for a ten-day trip to Türkiye from a US residence on October 24, 2026, and all five clear the 30,000-euro floor many times over: the smallest emergency medical limit in the set is about 280,000 dollars.

Clearing the floor is the easy part. The condition that separates them is the transfer guarantee the consulate names. Go Explore and Go Explore + pay repatriation of remains at actual cost, with the contract data spelling out that the coffin costs necessary for transport are included. World Travel caps the same guarantee at about 3,400 dollars, and the two WorldSecure plans at about 1,700 dollars. All five arrange medical repatriation at actual cost and all five bill the hospital directly, so you are not advancing money at an admissions desk.

Go Explore is the honest first pick for a sticker visa file

If a consular officer is going to read your certificate line by line, you want the two things they are told to look for to be unlimited rather than capped. Go Explore gives you about 280,000 dollars of emergency hospital care in Türkiye with the hospital billed directly, medical repatriation at actual cost, and repatriation of remains at actual cost including the transport costs, which is exactly the wording the New York consulate uses. It sits in the middle of our shortlist on price, so you are not paying the most to clear the file comfortably.

Go Explore + is the same contract with roughly double the medical ceiling, and it is worth the step up if the trip is long or involves older travelers. World Travel is the one to look at past 80, because it accepts applicants up to 84 and is the only plan here that includes a little trip cancellation as standard. WorldSecure Basic is the cheapest of the shortlist, but it stops at 39 and caps the transfer of remains, so read that line before you buy it for a visa file.

None of these is a Turkish product and none of them satisfies a residence permit application. For a short stay on a sticker visa they are the right tool, and the cards below show today’s price for your own dates.

Real quotes captured on hellosafe.com on 24 October 2026 for 1 traveller aged 34, a 10-day trip to Türkiye (14 to 24 December 2026), priced from a US residence and shown in US dollars. All five plans carry an emergency medical limit far above the 30,000 euros a Turkish consulate asks for on a sticker visa file. Your own premium depends on your dates, your age and the number of travellers, so the cards above show today's price for your trip.

Price

How much does Turkey visa insurance cost, traveler by traveler?

Between about 28 and 346 dollars, depending almost entirely on two things: how long you stay and how old you are. A single traveler aged 34 covered for a week pays about 28 dollars at the cheap end of our shortlist, and the same traveler covered for the ninety days a short-stay visa allows pays about 178 dollars.

Age is the real cliff, not price. At 34 all five plans quote. At 68 only three do, and the two that drop out are the two cheapest, which is why the budget column goes up rather than down on that row. If you are filing for a parent or a grandparent, check the age ceiling before you check the premium.

Tourist e-Visa

Why is the tourist e-Visa the one route with no insurance rule?

Because insurance is simply not among its published conditions. The official e-Visa system runs on a fixed list of requirements, and that list has never included a policy, a certificate or a minimum medical amount.

The Turkish missions publish the condition set in full. For the passports that need a supporting document, it asks for a valid sticker visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, the United States, the United Kingdom or Ireland; entry inside that document's validity; the same passport used for the application; a passport valid at least six months; travel for tourism or business only; a round-trip ticket; and proof of means described as a "return ticket, hotel reservation, at least USD 50 per each day of his/her stay in Turkey". There is no insurance line anywhere in it.

Not required does not mean not needed

Skipping coverage on an e-Visa trip is legal, and it is still the expensive choice. A foreign visitor pays Turkish private hospitals in full and up front, and nothing in a consular rulebook changes what an air ambulance costs. The plans on this page quote the same way whether you hold an e-Visa, a sticker visa or a passport that needs neither.

One more source of confusion worth clearing up: a great deal of what ranks for this subject is actually about the Schengen visa applied for in Türkiye, which does carry its own 30,000-euro insurance rule set by the European Union. That is a different application in a different direction, covered on our guide to getting a Schengen visa from Türkiye.

Residence permit

What health cover does a Turkish residence permit require?

Valid health insurance for the entire length of the permit, and it has to be coverage Türkiye recognizes, not a short-stay travel policy bought abroad. Türkiye's Law on Foreigners and International Protection makes it a condition of the permit itself, and the permit is canceled if the coverage lapses.

The Presidency of Migration Management accepts three routes, and only three. This section is information: the product behind it is a Turkish domestic one, sold inside Türkiye, and our comparison covers short-stay travel policies bought before departure. The point of putting it here is that a large share of people searching for Turkey visa insurance are actually in this situation and are about to buy the wrong thing.

  • A bilateral social security agreement document, if your home country has one with Türkiye and you obtain the provision document from the same institution that insures you at home.
  • SGK general health insurance, the Turkish public scheme. Students have a deadline: the application has to reach SGK within three months of first registration, and after that the door closes for them.
  • A Turkish private health policy written for this purpose, carrying the compliance statement set by the Presidency of Migration Management circular of May 10, 2016, number 16/2016.

That compliance statement is the whole reason a foreign travel policy does not work here. The policy document itself must carry the sentence, rendered in English by one Turkish university's official notification form as "This Present Policy Covers The Minimum Coverage Designated In The Communique Dated 10.05.2016 No:16 Pertaining To The Private Health Insurance To Be Acquired In The Submitting A Residence Permit Request". No policy issued outside Türkiye prints it, so no policy issued outside Türkiye is accepted, however high its ceiling.

Two documents, two different rules

If you are flying in on a sticker visa and then applying for a residence permit once you arrive, you are facing two separate requirements: a short-stay travel policy for the visa file, which the plans on this page cover, and Turkish-recognized health coverage for the permit, arranged inside Türkiye. They are not interchangeable and neither one satisfies the other’s rule.

Conditions

What are the real limits of a short-stay policy in Türkiye?

The ceilings are generous and the exclusions are where the money is actually lost. Every plan on this page excludes pre-existing conditions, three of the five include no trip cancellation at all, and the baggage coverage is a fraction of what the headline numbers suggest.

  • Pre-existing conditions: Excluded on all five. The Globe Trotter 2026 terms behind Go Explore and Go Explore + exclude, at article 3, costs arising from pre-existing illness or accident and their consequences, with the definition set at article 1. If you are managing a condition, declare it and check the wording before you pay.
  • Illnesses already known before departure: Named separately from the pre-existing exclusion in the Go Explore limitations. Falling ill after you book but before you fly is exactly the case these words are written for.
  • Baggage, once you read the sub-limits: Go Explore shows about 280 dollars per person with a deductible of roughly 28 dollars per claim, and sub-limits of about 110 dollars each on valuables, sports equipment, computers and phones. Theft from a car or van is capped at about 110 dollars per claim.
  • Trip cancellation on three of the five: Go Explore, Go Explore + and WorldSecure Basic include none. WorldSecure Platinum sells it as an option. A visa refusal is not a covered cancellation reason on any of them.
  • Extreme sports and professional sport: Not covered on the Go Explore contracts, and only as a paid option on WorldSecure Platinum. Paragliding over Ölüdeniz is the obvious case.
  • Care in your own country: World Travel states it plainly: medical expenses are covered only outside your country of residence. These are travel policies, not health plans.
  • Search and rescue has its own rules: Go Explore pays about 5,600 dollars per insured and about 11,000 dollars per event, excludes desert searches, and pays only after any similar coverage has been exhausted.

What actually happens if you are hospitalized in Türkiye

  1. Call the 24-hour assistance number printed on your certificate before you are admitted, not after. Every plan on this page runs a round-the-clock multilingual line.
  2. The assistance team contacts the hospital and sets up direct billing, which is included on all five plans, so the hospital invoices the insurer instead of asking you for a card.
  3. For outpatient care you will usually pay on the spot and claim it back, so keep the invoice, the prescription and the diagnosis in their original form.
  4. If you need to be moved, the assistance team organizes and pays the medical repatriation at actual cost. The same service handles transfer of remains, which is the guarantee the consulate asked to see in the first place.
Bank cards

How far does a US credit card's cover go in Türkiye?

Not far enough to replace a policy, and usually not far enough to matter. The strongest travel card in our US ranking, the Chase Sapphire Reserve, pays at most 2,500 dollars toward emergency medical care abroad, and only after a 50-dollar deductible. The Amex Platinum, at 895 dollars a year, and the Citi Prestige pay nothing at all toward a hospital bill abroad.

See all 128 analyzed cards →

Set that 2,500-dollar ceiling against the 30,000 euros a Turkish consulate asks you to prove, and against the roughly 280,000 dollars the cheapest plan on our shortlist carries. The gap is not marginal. Cancellation is the same story from the other side: cards do include trip cancellation, often at a healthy-looking 10,000 dollars per person, but the list of reasons that trigger it is short and tightly written, where a real cancellation policy names many more. Our review of what US credit cards really pay on a trip goes through the ceilings card by card.

There is also a paperwork problem a card can never solve. A consular officer wants a document in your name showing a medical limit and a transfer guarantee. A card benefit is a clause in a cardholder agreement, not a certificate with your name and surname on it, which is what the New York consulate document list explicitly requires.

Refusals

What gets an insurance document rejected at a Turkish consulate?

Almost always a formality rather than the coverage itself. The consulates publish the reasons, and four of the five below have nothing to do with how good the policy is.

  • A screenshot: "Screenshots will not be accepted. Documents are requested in their original size." Print the certificate as the insurer issued it.
  • A name that does not match the passport: Every applicant has to appear by name and surname on the insurance document, so a policy in a spouse's name alone fails for the other travelers.
  • Coverage that runs out before the stay does: New York asks for at least three months of validity, Houston for validity through the duration of stay. Short-dating the policy to save money is the classic rejection.
  • A quote instead of a paid policy: A basket, a quotation or a pending payment is not proof of insurance. Buy it, then file.
  • A card benefit with no certificate: There is no document to hand over, so there is nothing for the officer to accept.

Two timing details from the same documents are worth copying into your calendar. Your passport must have "an expiration date at least 60 days beyond the last day of your intended stay", and both consulates advise applying at least a month ahead, with Houston asking for three months in the summer season. Buy the policy before the interview, because the certificate is one of the documents you bring to it. If you want to see how other countries handle the same checks, our pages on Russia visa insurance and Zanzibar's compulsory policy show two very different models, and the travel insurance hub compares the full catalog.

FAQ

What do travelers still ask about Turkey visa insurance?

  • No. Insurance does not appear anywhere in the published conditions for the Turkish e-Visa, which ask for a supporting visa or residence permit where one is needed, a passport valid at least six months, a round-trip ticket, a hotel booking and about 50 dollars per day of stay. Any site telling you the e-Visa requires a policy is wrong.

  • A minimum of 30,000 euros, or the equivalent in US dollars, according to the 2026 document list of the Turkish Consulate General in New York. The same entry requires the policy to include transfer of the patient to the nearest healthcare facility or home address after discharge, and transfer of the body in case of death.

  • It has to be valid there, which in practice means worldwide or Europe-wide coverage that does not exclude the country. All five plans that quoted for a Türkiye trip in our comparison on October 24, 2026 cover it as a standard destination, so the question rarely arises in this direction.

  • Long enough to cover your whole stay, and possibly longer. The New York consulate asks for a policy valid for at least three months; Houston asks for one valid through the duration of stay. Buying for the full trip length satisfies the stricter of the two readings in most cases, and a 90-day policy on our shortlist starts at about 178 dollars.

  • For a sticker visa, yes. That is exactly what the consulate asks for: a travel health or accident policy with the right limits and a transfer guarantee. For a residence permit, no: the application needs coverage Türkiye recognizes, which means a social security agreement document, SGK, or a Turkish private policy carrying the 2016 compliance statement.

  • From about 28 dollars for one traveler aged 34 insured for a week, rising to about 50 dollars for ten days and about 178 dollars for a 90-day stay, at the cheap end of our shortlist. Quotes captured on hellosafe.com on October 24, 2026 from a US residence.

  • No. The strongest travel card in our US ranking pays at most 2,500 dollars of medical care abroad, after a 50-dollar deductible, and several premium cards pay nothing. Beyond the amount, a card gives you no certificate in your own name to hand to the consular officer.

  • Not by the plans on this page. Three of the five include no trip cancellation at all, and visa refusal is not a covered reason on any of them. The consulates themselves advise against finalizing travel arrangements until the outcome is known, which is the cheaper protection.

  • Yes, and it varies sharply. World Travel accepts applicants up to 84, Go Explore and Go Explore + up to 80, WorldSecure Platinum up to 65 and WorldSecure Basic up to 39. At 68, only three of the five plans quoted for a ten-day trip in our October 2026 test.

  • The permit itself requires Turkish-recognized health coverage for its whole duration, and that coverage is what the Presidency of Migration Management checks. A separate short-stay travel policy only becomes relevant again when the permit holder travels outside Türkiye, since these contracts cover care abroad rather than at home.
