Backpacker travel insurance Ireland: 12-month multi-country cover from €1.38 a day
- Multi-country cover
- Theft & baggage
- Budget-friendly
Is backpacker travel insurance worth it for a long trip from Ireland?
Backpacker travel insurance covers one long multi-country trip, up to 12 months on the Irish shelf, where a normal holiday policy runs out after a few weeks. Real quotes from Ireland start at €42.90 for a month and €257.40 for six months across Thailand, Mexico and Australia, about €1.38 a day.
It is worth it because one hospital admission costs more than years of premiums. The Department of Foreign Affairs puts it plainly: "Hospital bills can quickly run into thousands of euro, and a medical evacuation back to Ireland can cost thousands more." The HSE pays nothing towards treatment abroad, and your European Health Insurance Card stops at the edge of the EU and never funds a flight home.
The real question is which plan survives your route, and that is settled in the fine print. Pricing the Irish shelf trip length by trip length, I found the choice collapsing as the months add up: 11 plans quote a one-month trip, 8 quote six months and only 7 quote a full year. One stops at 184 days, one at 364, and nothing at all quotes past 365. This guide names them, with real August 2026 prices in euro.
Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated. Learn moreWhat is the best backpacker travel insurance in Ireland?
The best backpacker travel insurance for most Irish travellers in 2026 is WorldSecure Platinum: 365-day trips, €2,000 of baggage cover, cancellation up to €9,000 and an optional risk-sports cover, at €468.47 for six months. Under 40? WorldSecure Basic does the same six months for €257.40.
My pick for an Irish backpacker
On a long trip you want three things paid without an argument: a hospital bill on the far side of the world, a stolen rucksack, and a flight home when it goes badly wrong. WorldSecure Platinum is the plan I put first for Ireland. It runs the full 365 days, carries the joint-highest baggage limit at €2,000, refunds your prepaid trip up to €9,000 if you have to cancel before departure, and it is the only plan here whose optional risk-sports cover brings scuba diving with tanks and mountaineering inside the policy. Six months costs €468.47, a full year €936.94.
Under 40, WorldSecure Basic keeps the same €300,000 medical core and the same direct hospital billing for €257.40 over six months, the cheapest complete cover an Irish resident can buy for that trip. Two honest caveats. If your rucksack is mostly camera and laptop, look at Safe Nomad instead: it is the one plan that insures electronics separately, at €1,500, and the only one whose medical cover has no ceiling at all. And if you plan to dive, Safe Extreme includes diving up to FFESSM Level 3 as standard for €391.60, where the others need an option or exclude it outright.

How much does backpacker travel insurance cost in Ireland?
Backpacker travel insurance costs from €42.90 for one month to €936.94 for a top 12-month plan, on real HelloSafe quotes for an Irish departure captured in August 2026. Budget about €1.38 a day for essential cover and about €2.59 a day for our premium pick over six months.
Profile | Budget | Average | Premium | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
🎒 Backpacker, 1 month Age 25, three countries | €42.90 (WorldSecure Basic) | €97.90 | €62.37 (WorldSecure Platinum) | 11 plans quote, and every one bills the hospital directly |
🎒 Backpacker, 6 months Age 25, three countries | €257.40 (WorldSecure Basic) | €461.45 | €468.47 (WorldSecure Platinum) | The last window for Safe Start, which stops at 184 days |
🌍 Backpacker, 12 months Age 25, three countries | €514.80 (WorldSecure Basic) | €866.80 | €936.94 (WorldSecure Platinum) | WorldSecure Basic ends at 364 days, one day short of a year |
💼 Working holiday, 12 months Age 28, Australia | €433.20 (Cap Working Holiday) | €460.90 | €484.00 (Safe WHV) | A visa product, not a tourist plan: only 4 plans quote |
🎓 Gap-year student, 12 months Age 20, Australia | €437.80 (Go Campus) | €514.80 | €553.30 (World Student) | Adds studies-interruption cover no tourist plan carries |
Two things move the price far more than the destination: your age and how long you stay away. WorldSecure Basic scales almost in a straight line (€42.90 for a month, €257.40 for six, €514.80 for a year) while WorldSecure Platinum climbs to €936.94 over twelve months because its cancellation and sports cover ride along. The spread between plans is wide: the same six-month route costs €257.40 with the cheapest and €577.50 with World Travel. If you want the whole Irish shelf side by side, our travel insurance comparison for Ireland lists every plan, and our ranking of the best travel insurance in Ireland covers the short trips either side of a long route.
What does backpacker travel insurance cover?
Backpacker travel insurance covers emergency medical care abroad (€250,000 to €500,000 on the Irish shelf, uncapped on one plan), repatriation at actual cost, baggage from €250 to €2,000, personal liability and search and rescue. Trip cancellation is the exception: only two of the eight long-trip plans include any.

Guarantee | On the Irish shelf | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
Emergency medical Hospital care abroad | €250,000 to €500,000 | Safe Nomad alone has no ceiling, and it stops selling at 39 |
Repatriation Medical flight home | Actual cost, no ceiling | The insurer's medical team decides and organises the transport |
Direct billing No money up front | All 8 plans | Ring the assistance line before you accept treatment |
Baggage and belongings Theft, damage, loss | €250 to €2,000 | Phones, laptops and sports gear sit on the excluded-items list |
Electronics Laptop, phone, camera | €100 to €1,500 | Five of the eight plans carry no electronics line at all |
Search and rescue | €3,000 to €6,000 | The higher caps are what matter on trekking routes |
Personal liability | €1,500,000 to €4,500,000 | Damage caused during a professional activity is excluded |
Trip cancellation | Only 2 plans of 8 | WorldSecure Platinum up to €9,000, World Travel €1,500 |
What separates a backpacker from a holidaymaker is exposure: several regions on one policy, months of hostels, and gear you carry every day. The Department of Foreign Affairs makes the same point, warning that a backpacker faces "greater risk of theft, through shared accommodations or travelling between destinations". That is why the medical ceiling, the theft wording and the maximum trip length matter more than any headline discount. For the general picture of each guarantee, see our guide to travel insurance in Ireland.
Which backpacker travel insurance conditions should you check before buying?
Four conditions decide whether backpacker travel insurance actually pays out: the maximum trip length, the excluded-items list behind the baggage limit, the activities wording and the age rule. We read the binding policy documents behind the Irish shelf, and this is what to check before you pay.
- A maximum trip length that fits your route : six plans run to 365 days, WorldSecure Basic to 364 and Safe Start only to 184, so leave yourself room to extend
- Medical cover of €300,000 or more with direct billing : all eight long-trip plans pay the hospital directly, so you never advance the bill yourself
- A baggage limit that matches your kit : €2,000 on WorldSecure Platinum, Safe Start, Safe Nomad and Safe Extreme, against €250 on Go Explore
- Separate electronics cover if you travel with a laptop : Safe Nomad insures electronics at €1,500 where Go Explore and Go Explore + stop at €100
- An age rule you actually pass : WorldSecure Basic and Safe Nomad close at 39, Safe Extreme at 49, WorldSecure Platinum at 65, Safe Start at 69, World Travel runs to 84
- Buying after you have already left : an 8-day waiting period applies to every benefit on the WorldSecure policies when you subscribe after departure
- Valuables and electronics inside a baggage claim : jewellery, laptops, mobile phones, sports articles and musical instruments are named on the excluded-items list
- Theft with no report to the authorities : without a complaint filed with a competent authority there is no compensation, and the claim must reach the insurer within 3 months
- Paid work on the road : personal liability does not apply to damage resulting from any professional activity, whatever your visa says
- A night out that goes wrong : the Department of Foreign Affairs warns that most policies will not cover drink or drug-related incidents
The excluded-items list catches more backpackers than any ceiling. Behind WorldSecure Basic, the policy wording excludes jewels, devices reproducing sound or image and their accessories, laptop computers, mobile phones, sports articles, musical instruments, eyeglasses, contact lenses and keys from the €1,150 baggage limit. What is left is compensated at like-for-like replacement value, less obsolescence. Read that list before you assume your camera is insured.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission gives Irish travellers the rule that covers all of this in one line: "Generally, if something is not specified, it is not covered." The CCPC also names backpacker travel insurance as its own category of policy, alongside single-trip, multi-trip and 65-plus cover, and warns that you are generally not covered if you travel against the advice of the Department of Foreign Affairs. On a route that changes as you go, that is a clause worth rereading before each border.
How long can backpacker travel insurance cover you abroad?
Backpacker travel insurance sold to Irish residents covers a single trip of up to 12 months: 365 days on six of the eight long-trip plans, 364 on WorldSecure Basic and only 184 on Safe Start. Past 365 days nothing on the Irish shelf will quote at all, whatever your route.
Plan | Max trip length | Ages | 12-month price |
|---|---|---|---|
WorldSecure Platinum Our premium pick | 365 days | 0 to 65 | €936.94 |
WorldSecure Basic Our budget pick | 364 days | 0 to 39 | €514.80 |
Safe Nomad | 365 days | 0 to 39 | €924.00 |
Safe Extreme | 365 days | 0 to 49 | €724.90 |
Go Explore + | 365 days | 0 to 80 | €866.80 |
Go Explore | 365 days | 0 to 80 | €605.00 |
World Travel | 365 days | 0 to 84 | €878.90 |
Safe Start | 184 days | 0 to 69 | Not available |
The cliffs are real, not theoretical. Ask the Irish shelf for a two-month trip and 11 plans still quote; add two days and SafeTrip Tourism and Safe Care vanish at once, because they cap at 60 days. Go Protect, our top pick for short trips from Ireland, stops at 90 days. Safe Start disappears the day you ask for 185. Extensions have their own rule: the Globe Traveller wording behind the WorldSecure plans allows cover "for a maximum period of 12 months maximum, either in one or several policies", subject to the insurer's authorisation, and the new policy must start the day the old one ends. Any gap restarts an 8-day waiting period on every benefit.
Does backpacker travel insurance cover diving, trekking and scooters?
Not by default. Backpacker travel insurance wordings exclude much of what backpackers plan: scuba with tanks and mountaineering need WorldSecure Platinum's risk-sports option, Safe Extreme covers diving to FFESSM Level 3 as standard, and rafting, canyoning and bungee jumping are excluded on Go Explore.
The contract detail rewards a second reading. The Globe Traveller wording behind the WorldSecure plans excludes bobsleigh, skeleton, mountaineering, competitive luge, aerial sports other than parasailing, sea scooters, combat sports, off-piste sliding sports and scuba diving with tanks unless the risk-sports option is selected when you subscribe. Safe Extreme goes the other way and covers leisure diving as standard, stopping only "beyond Level 3 of the FFESSM", but it excludes any sport you practise recurrently, from three sessions a week, which is exactly what a diving stint in Thailand looks like. The Globe Trotter wording behind Go Explore and Go Explore + is the strictest: mountaineering, rock-climbing, speleology, bungee jumping, rafting, canyoning, jet-skiing, kite-surfing and high-mountain trekking above 3,500 m are all out, and scuba is excluded apart from freediving under 50 m.
Then there is the scooter clause. Renting a moped in Asia is the classic backpacker accident, and the Go Explore wording excludes accidents "occurring when the insured is the driver of a motor vehicle", as well as any sport using motorised mechanical equipment, as driver or passenger. If scooter days are on your route, check that clause before anything else. The Department of Foreign Affairs gives the same advice in plainer words: make sure your policy covers the activities you actually intend to do, and book adventure activities through reputable operators.
Can backpacker travel insurance cover a working holiday?
Not really. The tourist plans behind backpacker travel insurance exclude damage resulting from any professional activity from their liability cover. For an Australian, Canadian or New Zealand working holiday, a dedicated visa policy is the right shape, from €433.20 for twelve months.
Ireland sends a lot of young people abroad on working-holiday authorisations, and the DFA notes that "each year, large numbers of young Irish people set out on backpacking adventures". Ask our comparator for a working-holiday visa in Australia and four plans answer for an Irish resident aged 28: Cap Working Holiday at €433.20, Go Campus at €437.80, Safe WHV at €484.00 and World Student at €553.30 for the full twelve months. A gap-year student aged 20 gets a different shelf again, from €437.80 with Go Campus to €553.30 with World Student, and those plans add studies-interruption cover that no tourist policy carries. Real quotes, August 2026. The tourist plans on this page then suit the pure travel legs before and after the job.
Do you really need backpacker travel insurance as an Irish traveller?
Yes, more than almost any other traveller. Your European Health Insurance Card is worthless outside the EU and the EEA, the state pays nothing towards a medical flight home, and a route measured in months multiplies the chance of one very bad day. Backpacker travel insurance is what stands between you and that bill.
The European Health Insurance Card gives Irish residents public healthcare in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, and nothing else: Citizens Information states it "will not cover you for healthcare outside of the EU, other than Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein (EEA) and Switzerland" and does not cover private healthcare. It is no use in Thailand, Australia or the Americas, which is where most backpacker routes go, and it never pays for repatriation. One practical note for 2026: the HSE has temporarily paused printing plastic EHIC cards, so new applicants get a Provisional Replacement Certificate, with a digital adult card available in the HSE Health App.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is blunt about who pays if it goes wrong: "The Department cannot pay for emergency medical repatriation, repatriation of remains, or for expenses as a result of a personal emergency while you are abroad." It also reports that Insurance Ireland recommends a minimum of €1 million of medical cover. Worth an honest answer: of the eight long-trip plans we priced for Ireland, only Safe Nomad reaches that, because it reimburses the actual cost with no ceiling. The rest sit between €250,000 and €500,000, and every one of them carries repatriation at actual cost, uncapped. If the €1 million headline is your priority, buy from an Irish specialist and pay for it; if the repatriation line and the price decide it, the plans above do the job. Travelling several times a year instead of once for six months? Compare an annual multi-trip policy before you commit. Last updated August 2026.
Backpacker travel insurance: what else do you need to know?
You can, but read the waiting period first. On the WorldSecure policies, cover taken out after departure only starts paying after an 8-day waiting period on all benefits. Buying before you fly avoids the wait completely and keeps any cancellation cover meaningful.
Each plan sets its own. WorldSecure Basic and Safe Nomad accept travellers up to 39, Safe Extreme up to 49, WorldSecure Platinum up to 65, Safe Start up to 69, Go Explore and Go Explore + up to 80, and World Travel up to 84. HelloSafe data for Ireland, August 2026.
Yes. Every long-trip plan we compare for Irish residents is multi-destination, so one policy covers the whole route. Our reference quote covers Thailand, Mexico and Australia for six months from €257.40 for a traveller aged 25.
Only on the right plan. Safe Extreme covers leisure diving as standard up to FFESSM Level 3, for €391.60 over six months. WorldSecure Platinum needs its risk-sports option for scuba with tanks, and the Go Explore wording excludes diving altogether apart from freediving under 50 m.
Check the wording before you rent. The Go Explore policy excludes accidents occurring when the insured is the driver of a motor vehicle, and excludes any sport using motorised mechanical equipment, as driver or passenger. A moped rental in Thailand or Vietnam falls squarely inside that clause.
Usually not through baggage cover. The wording behind WorldSecure Basic excludes laptop computers, mobile phones, jewels and sports articles from its €1,150 baggage limit. Safe Nomad is the exception on the Irish shelf, insuring electronics separately at €1,500 according to our product data.
Between €257.40 with WorldSecure Basic and €577.50 with World Travel, for one traveller aged 25 covering Thailand, Mexico and Australia, on real quotes captured in August 2026. The median of the eight plans that quoted is €461.45, about €2.55 a day.
Yes, up to 12 months in total on the WorldSecure policies, in one or several policies and subject to the insurer’s authorisation. The new policy must start the day the previous one ends: any gap triggers a fresh 8-day waiting period on every benefit.
No. The EHIC only entitles Irish residents to public healthcare in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, never covers repatriation and does not cover private healthcare. It is no help in Thailand, Australia or the Americas, exactly where most backpacker routes go.
Mostly no. Six of the eight long-trip plans on the Irish shelf exclude cancellation entirely. WorldSecure Platinum refunds prepaid costs up to €9,000 and World Travel up to €1,500, so if cancellation matters to you the shortlist narrows to those two.
