Family travel insurance Ireland 2026: cover for parents and children from €41.78 a week
- Children covered
- One family policy
- Liability included
Is family travel insurance worth it for an Irish family?
Family travel insurance puts every traveller on one policy. For an Irish family of four it starts at €41.78 for a week in Spain, about €1.49 per person per day (HelloSafe, August 2026), against hospital bills the Department of Foreign Affairs says run into thousands of euro.
Four travellers do not simply add their risks, they multiply the ways one incident wrecks the booking: a child ill 48 hours before departure cancels four seats, not one. The Department is blunt about who picks up the pieces. It cannot pay for emergency medical repatriation, repatriation of remains, or for expenses arising from a personal emergency abroad, and it warns that a medical evacuation back to Ireland costs thousands more than the hospital stay itself.
The free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) helps in EU state hospitals, yet pays nothing towards the flight home, a private clinic or a cancelled holiday. Travel insurance in Ireland carries exactly those bills, and for families the plan you pick decides who sits at a sick child's bedside, who minds the other children, and who pays for it.
Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. HelloSafe is an ORIAS-registered insurance broker (n° 21008038), supervised by the ACPR. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.

Twelve plans quote family travel insurance for an Irish household departing this mid-term. Go Protect leads for most families: €41.78 covered two adults and two children for a week in Spain, with €300,000 of medical cover each and the only written clause for the children (HelloSafe, August 2026).
If a child is taken to hospital abroad you hand over no card: on every plan in our shortlist the hospital is billed directly. What separates them is what happens next. Of the three contracts we read line by line, Go Protect’s is the one that spells out the children: it organises and pays for someone to travel out from Ireland to mind children under 18 when the parent is the one who is ill, and it covers €80 a night of a parent’s room, for four nights, when a child has to stay in past your return date. With it you get €300,000 of medical cover per person, €4,500,000 of liability for what children break and a party of up to nine at any age up to 99, for €41.78 for two adults and two children in Spain. Take Go Explore + for long-haul instead, where €500,000 per person is the highest medical ceiling on the Irish shelf, or WorldSecure Platinum at €115.50 if you would rather have cancellation built in than buy it as a separate package.

Price your exact party rather than a headline rate. In our capture two adults alone paid €103.40 on Go Explore and €126.50 whether they brought one child or two, so the second child rode free, while World Travel charged each child a full adult €59.40 and took the same family from €118.80 to €237.60. Are children covered free on family travel insurance?
Children are covered by family travel insurance only when they are named on the policy. Whether they are free depends on the plan: in our August 2026 capture a second child cost nothing on Go Explore and Go Explore +, €9.66 on Go Protect and a full adult fare on World Travel.
There is no junior half-policy. A declared child is a full insured person with their own medical ceiling and their own liability cover, and an undeclared child has no cover at all. One thing that does not move the price is how old they are: two adults travelling with a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old were quoted the same figures, to the cent, as the same adults with two five-year-olds, on all twelve plans.

Contrary to common belief, children are never covered by default simply because they travel with their parents. Every child must be named on the certificate, with travel dates matching the booking, and every family member also needs their own EHIC.
What must family travel insurance cover for parents and children?
Family travel insurance earns its keep on six guarantees. Insurance Ireland recommends a minimum of €1 million of medical cover, the Department of Foreign Affairs reports, and no plan on the Irish shelf reaches it: €500,000 per person is the highest, so read the ceiling against your destination.
That gap is worth understanding rather than fearing. €500,000 covers a European hospital stay and the flight home many times over; it is long-haul, and above all the United States, where a ceiling starts to look like a real limit. The six criteria below are what actually separates the plans a family can claim on from the ones that merely look cheap.
- Medical cover per person, not per family : €300,000 to €500,000 a head across the six plans we shortlist, and the WorldSecure wording applies it per insured per year, not as one shared family pot
- No money advanced : the assistance line settles with the hospital directly, so nobody asks a parent for a card at the desk; every plan in our shortlist includes it
- Repatriation at actual cost : uncapped medical transport home on every shortlisted plan, the one bill the EHIC explicitly never pays
- A written clause for the children : of the contracts we read, only Go Protect organises and pays a return journey from Ireland for someone to mind children under 18 if you are hospitalised
- Liability for what children break : €1,500,000 to €4,500,000 across the shortlist, the cover that answers a wrecked rental or an injured playmate
- Baggage that matches what you pack : €500 to €2,000 per person across the same six, worth checking before you travel with a buggy, car seats and a laptop
- Age caps bite early : WorldSecure Basic stops at 39, so one parent turning 40 removes the cheapest per-head plan; WorldSecure Platinum stops at 65 and Safe Start at 69
- Party-size limits : Go Explore and Go Explore + take 6 travellers, Go Protect and Cap Explorer 9, Safe Start 11, World Travel and SafeTrip Tourism 20
- Cancellation is rarely built in : only 3 of the 12 plans quoted it for our test family, and World Travel caps it at €1,500, nowhere near a €3,000 package holiday
- The excess is charged per person : the CCPC defines it as the first fixed part of any claim, so one bug that works through four family members can mean four excesses
- Cover can be thin behind a big price : Cap Explorer cost €586.80 for our test family on €75,000 of medical cover, the weakest ceiling on the shelf
Which family travel insurance conditions catch Irish parents out?
The conditions that decide a family travel insurance claim sit in the policy wording, not the price table. We read the binding contracts of the shortlisted plans in August 2026; four clauses deserve a parent's attention before paying.
The bedside benefit has a day trigger, and they all differ. WorldSecure Platinum pays round-trip transport and room-and-breakfast for a family member once a child has been hospitalised more than 6 days. Go Explore + pays from day 5, at €80 a night for up to 10 nights. Go Protect pays €80 a night for a maximum of 4 nights, from the moment the hospital stay runs past your original return date. Meals are the visitor's problem on all three.
Who minds the other children is a separate clause, and it is often missing. Go Protect's contract organises and pays a return journey from Ireland, first-class train or economy flight, for a person of your choice to accompany children under 18 when you are too ill to, plus €80 a day of their accommodation for two days, though you still buy the children's own tickets. The Go Explore + wording contains no such provision, and WorldSecure Platinum's does not explicitly return accompanying children if the parent is flown home. Ceilings run per person per year on the WorldSecure contracts, so a family of four draws on four full medical limits rather than sharing one.
Cancellation cover disappears by the day. On 4 August 2026 we asked for cancellation on a €3,000 family booking: three plans quoted for a trip booked that same day, two for one booked the day before, and only Go Protect for a booking a few days old. It is also the expensive part, taking Go Protect from €41.78 to €342.14 for that €3,000 trip. Buy on the day you book, not the week you fly.
Check what you already hold, and read the questions honestly. The CCPC notes that travel insurance is sometimes bundled with other products such as credit cards, and that travel agents often sell it with a package holiday without you being obliged to take it. HelloSafe holds no card-by-card analysis for Irish banks, so we make no claim about what an Irish card includes: ask your issuer for the certificate. The CCPC also warns that an undeclared pre-existing condition can invalidate a claim, and that if something is not specified in the policy, it is not covered.
Mid-term and summer holidays are paid for months ahead. A policy bought the week you book protects those prepayments from day one; one bought the night before departure protects only the trip itself, and by then most of the cancellation shelf has already closed to you.
Do you still need family travel insurance with an EHIC?
Yes. The EHIC entitles your family to public healthcare in the EU, EEA and Switzerland on the same terms as locals, but it never pays for the flight home to Ireland, a private clinic or a cancelled holiday, so family travel insurance still carries the real financial risk.
The card is free from the Health Service Executive, and Citizens Information is explicit that each family member needs their own, children included. It covers a temporary stay of up to three months, and in some member states you still pay the share locals pay, with no refund. The Department of Foreign Affairs adds that the card is not a substitute for proper travel insurance and that some private hospitals will not accept it. The two cover opposite blind spots: the card covers pre-existing conditions and routine maternity care in the public system, which travel policies usually do not, while the policy covers the repatriation flight and private treatment, which the card never touches.
What happens abroad | EHIC (free card) | Family policy |
|---|---|---|
Public hospital care in the EU, EEA or Switzerland | Free or reduced cost, local terms | Covered |
Private hospital or clinic | Not covered | Up to the per-person medical limit |
The cost of flying you home to Ireland | Not covered | Actual cost on every shortlisted plan |
Treatment outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland | Not covered | Covered worldwide |
Pre-existing medical conditions | Covered in the public system | Only if you declare them and the insurer accepts |
A cancelled family holiday | Not covered | Plan-dependent: 3 of the 12 quoted cancellation* |
Is annual family travel insurance worth it for Irish families?
Usually not. Annual family travel insurance costs €1,078.00 a year for two adults and two children, the only multi-trip plan that quoted for that party, while three separate insured weeks in Europe cost €125.34 to €518.10 in total. It wins only for families flying far more than the school year allows.
The Irish school calendar is the real test. The Department of Education's standardised school year closes every school from Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October 2026, with a February mid-term, Easter and the summer to follow, which is three or four trips at most for a typical family. Three Go Protect weeks come to €125.34 and three Go Explore + weeks to €518.10, both under the annual price. Run the sums yourself if you fly more often, using annual multi-trip travel insurance, and start from the best travel insurance in Ireland ranking if you also travel without the children.
What else do Irish parents ask about family travel insurance?
Real HelloSafe quotes captured on 4 August 2026: €41.78 to €844.80 for two adults and two children spending 7 nights in Spain over the October mid-term, with a median of €176.00. The cheapest works out at about €1.49 per person per day. The same family to the USA for 14 nights started at €90.18.
Not as a rule, but the fourth traveller was genuinely free on two plans in our August 2026 capture: Go Explore charged €126.50 and Go Explore + €172.70 whether the family brought one child or two. Go Protect added €9.66 for a second child, while World Travel charged each child a full adult fare.
No. One adult aged 38 travelling with children of 8 and 6 was quoted exactly the same €32.12 to €651.20 as a couple with one child, to the cent, on all twelve plans. These policies price the number of travellers, not the shape of the household.
Not on the Irish shelf. Two adults with children aged 15 and 17 returned identical quotes to the same adults with two five-year-olds, across all twelve plans. Only the number of travellers, the destination and the length of the trip moved the price in our August 2026 capture.
No. The card gives your family public healthcare on local terms in the EU, EEA and Switzerland, and every family member needs their own. It never pays for the flight home to Ireland or for private treatment, and the Department of Foreign Affairs states plainly that it is not a substitute for proper travel insurance.
Yes, but the choice narrows sharply. With grandparents of 70 and 68 added to two parents and two children, only 4 of the 12 plans still quoted: Go Protect at €60.85, World Travel at €356.40, SafeTrip Tourism at €528.00 and Cap Explorer at €880.20. Check every traveller’s age before comparing prices.
The day you book. In our 4 August 2026 test, three plans quoted cancellation cover for a family booking made that same day, two for one made the day before, and only Go Protect for a booking a few days old. Waiting costs you options rather than money.
Declare them. The CCPC warns that many policies exclude pre-existing conditions unless you tell the insurer in advance and they accept the risk, and that an undisclosed condition can invalidate a claim. Within the EU the EHIC works the other way round: Citizens Information lists pre-existing conditions among the things the card does cover, in the public system.
