Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the HSBC Cash Rewards Mastercard
The HSBC Cash Rewards Mastercard included no travel insurance on the card itself. There was no emergency out-of-country medical, no trip cancellation or interruption, no flight or baggage delay, no baggage loss, and no common-carrier travel-accident (AD&D) benefit. Emergency travel medical was offered only as a separate, optional paid add-on (about $69/year), so it is not card coverage. With HSBC's exit from Canada in 2024 the card is no longer available — travellers needing protection should compare a dedicated travel-insurance policy.
- Purchase, extended-warranty and mobile-device protection were available instead (see the Protection tab)
- No annual fee while the card was offered
- No emergency travel medical on the card
- No trip cancellation or interruption coverage
- No flight or baggage delay, and no baggage-loss coverage
- No common-carrier travel-accident (AD&D) benefit
- Discontinued — no longer available

Money.ca
Solid no-fee cash-back card, light on insurance
The appeal was the $0 annual fee and straightforward cash back, not the insurance. Coverage was limited to purchase assurance, extended warranty and mobile-device protection — no travel medical or rental coverage came with the card.
Forbes Advisor Canada
Mobile device coverage was the standout
The most useful benefit was Mobile Device Insurance up to $1,000, alongside 90-day purchase assurance and a doubled manufacturer's warranty. Travellers had to look elsewhere, as the card carried no trip or rental coverage.

Discontinued after HSBC's exit from Canada
With HSBC leaving Canada and the RBC migration completed in 2024, this card can no longer be obtained. Anyone who valued its purchase and mobile-device protection now needs a replacement card.

How to make a claim
Open a claim with Assurant before acting
Call Assurant at 1-800-668-8680 (or 416-977-6066 collect from elsewhere) or file online at cardbenefits.assurant.com. For a Mobile Device loss, report it within 30 days; notify your wireless provider within 48 hours to suspend service, and for theft notify the police within 7 days.
Gather your documents
Assemble the card statement showing the full charge, the original sales receipt, the original manufacturer's warranty (for extended-warranty or mechanical-breakdown claims), and a police or carrier report where applicable.
Wait for approval before repair or replacement
Do not repair or replace a covered item or mobile device until Assurant approves the claim — proceeding first can make the claim ineligible.
Submit proof within the deadline
Provide written notice as soon as reasonably possible and no later than 90 days from the loss, with proof within one year. Reimbursement is issued once the required proof is received.
What people ask about the HSBC Cash Rewards Mastercard
- No. HSBC Bank Canada was acquired by RBC and the transaction closed on March 28, 2024. HSBC credit cards are no longer issued in Canada and this card can no longer be applied for; existing cardholders were migrated to RBC products. The coverage described here is historical and is kept for reference. For current options, compare cards or use a travel-insurance quote tool.
- Only three everyday-purchase protections: Purchase Assurance (90 days against loss, theft or damage), Extended Warranty (doubles the manufacturer's warranty up to one extra year — both sharing a $60,000 lifetime account maximum), and Mobile Device Insurance (up to $1,000). It did not include any travel or rental car insurance.
- No. The card itself carried no emergency travel medical, trip cancellation/interruption, flight or baggage delay, baggage loss or common-carrier travel-accident coverage. Emergency travel medical was available only as a separate, optional paid insurance (about $69 per year) — it was not part of the card.
- No. There was no rental car collision/loss damage waiver (CDW), third-party liability, roadside assistance, or rental personal-effects/accident coverage. Renters had to buy the agency's CDW or rely on their own auto policy.
- If you charged the full cost of a phone or tablet to the card, Mobile Device Insurance reimbursed loss, theft, mechanical breakdown or accidental damage up to $1,000 — based on the device's depreciated value (2% per month) less a deductible of $25 to $100 depending on the device cost. Coverage began 30 days after purchase, with a maximum of one claim per 12 months and two per 48 months. You had to report a loss within 30 days, notify your wireless provider within 48 hours, and notify police within 7 days for theft.
- Purchase Assurance protected most new items charged in full to the card against loss, theft or damage for 90 days from purchase. Extended Warranty automatically doubled the original manufacturer's warranty (on warranties of 5 years or less) up to one additional year. Both shared a $60,000 lifetime maximum per account.
- Coverage was underwritten by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida (Assurant) under Master Policy HSBC112021, issued to HSBC Bank Canada. Claims were handled by Assurant at 1-800-668-8680 (Canada/US) or 416-977-6066 collect from elsewhere, and online at cardbenefits.assurant.com.
- If you were migrated to an RBC product, your current coverage is governed by RBC's certificate, not this one. For a historical claim tied to an event that occurred while the HSBC coverage was in force, contact Assurant at 1-800-668-8680 or cardbenefits.assurant.com. Always rely on the wording of the certificate in force at the time of your purchase.
