Digital nomad insurance UK: long-stay cover for remote workers from £224
- Multi-country cover
- Work equipment covered
- Professional liability
Is digital nomad insurance worth it for a UK remote worker?
Digital nomad insurance is long-stay travel cover for people who live and work abroad without a fixed base. From the UK it starts at £224.28 for six months, and the plan that matters is the one whose duration limit outlasts your trip.
Here is the first thing our data says, and it surprises most people: no nomad-branded policy in our catalogue sells to a UK resident. Safe Nomad, the one plan actually built for remote workers, is blocked at checkout with the rule "departure country GB not supported". A British nomad does not buy nomad insurance. They buy a long-stay travel policy and make it stretch.
So the real question is not which brand has the nicest website. It is how many days your policy will run, what happens on day 365, and whether the cover follows you when you are working rather than sightseeing. We priced the whole GB market on 3 August 2026 and read the policy wordings to answer exactly that.
One number frames the rest: across the six plans a UK resident can buy for a six-month stay, medical cover runs from ≈£210,000 to ≈£420,000, every one pays the hospital directly so you never advance the money, and the best laptop cover among them is ≈£80.
Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.
Learn moreWhat is the best digital nomad insurance for UK remote workers?
The best digital nomad insurance for a UK remote worker is the long-stay plan that combines the highest medical ceiling with a duration limit longer than your trip. On our August 2026 GB pricing, that is Go Explore + at £481.16 for six months, with ≈£420,000 of medical cover.
The six plans below are the ones that actually quote for a UK resident on a six-month stay. They are ordered for a nomad: worldwide medical first, then equipment, then repatriation and liability. If you are comparing more broadly, our best travel insurance comparison covers shorter trips too.
Which plan we would take
You get treated in hospital abroad without paying anything upfront, and the bill is covered up to ≈£420,000 instead of the ≈£250,000 most long-stay plans stop at. That is Go Explore +, £481.16 for six months from the UK. It keeps selling up to age 80 and runs a full 12 months, which matters when your return date is a guess.
WorldSecure Platinum costs £471.00 and is the one I would take if you surf, dive or ski: extreme sports are included, liability runs to ≈£3,800,000 and baggage to ≈£1,700. WorldSecure Basic is the honest budget answer at £224.28, less than half the price, but it stops selling at age 39 and covers no equipment at all.
Whichever you choose, insure the laptop separately. The best equipment line in this whole shortlist is ≈£80, which will not replace a MacBook.

How much does digital nomad insurance cost from the UK?
Digital nomad insurance costs a UK resident from £224.28 for six months and from £526.87 for a full year abroad, or from £41.80 a month if you switch to an international health plan. Age, trip length and destination move the price more than the brand does.
The table below is built from real quotes captured on 3 August 2026, one row per traveller situation. Budget is the cheapest plan that quoted, average is the median across every plan that quoted, and premium is the best-value plan for that profile.
Profile | Budget | Average | Premium | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Digital nomad, 6 months One base, one long stay | £224.28 (WorldSecure Basic) | £436.30 | £481.16 (Go Explore +) | Six plans quote, and all six pay the hospital directly |
Digital nomad, 12 months A full year away | £526.87 (Go Explore) | £760.13 | £941.47 (WorldSecure Platinum) | Only four of the six still quote at 364 days |
Backpacker nomad, 1 month Short multi-country hops | £37.38 (WorldSecure Basic) | £74.76 | £89.14 (Go Explore +) | Cheap per trip, but the same equipment gap |
Long-stay health plan, 12 months and over Billed monthly, not per trip | £41.80/month (Explore) | £47.90/month | £60.96/month (Elite) | Will not quote at all below 364 days |
How long can digital nomad insurance actually cover you?
The longest single policy a UK resident can buy through HelloSafe runs 364 days. Ask for 365 and every plan in the comparator refuses to quote. Digital nomad insurance is therefore a series of year-long policies, not one open-ended contract.
We measured this rather than read it off a brochure, by moving the end date day by day through our live pricing engine in August 2026. Three different ceilings appeared.
Plan | Longest stay it will quote | Age limit | Medical cover abroad |
|---|---|---|---|
Go Explore + Highest medical ceiling | 364 days | 80 | ≈£420,000 |
WorldSecure Platinum Extreme sports included | 364 days | 65 | ≈£250,000 |
World Travel Oldest age limit | 364 days | 84 | ≈£250,000 |
Go Explore Mid-range worldwide | 364 days | 80 | ≈£210,000 |
WorldSecure Basic Cheapest long stay | 363 days | 39 | ≈£250,000 |
Safe Start Six months maximum | 183 days | 69 | ≈£420,000 |
Renewal is where nomads get caught. Go Explore + can be renewed, but the request has to reach the insurer in writing before the current cover expires, and its terms say the first policy must be taken out before the 365th day abroad, with the 36th month abroad ending your insurability altogether. WorldSecure Platinum is capped at 12 months in total, across one policy or several, and any further enrolment needs the company's approval.
If you already know you will be away for more than a year, do not stack travel policies. Move to an international health plan: those quote from £41.80 a month for a UK resident, but they will not sell you anything shorter than 364 days, so the two products never overlap.
A renewal requested after your policy has expired is a new application, not a renewal, and anything that happened in the gap is uninsured. Diary the renewal date the day you buy, and count from your first day abroad rather than from the policy start date.
What should digital nomad insurance cover for remote work?
Digital nomad insurance should cover emergency medical care and hospital treatment abroad with direct billing, repatriation at actual cost, personal liability, and a duration long enough for your stay. Equipment and professional liability almost always need buying separately.
These are the criteria we apply when ranking plans for this profile, in the order they decide the outcome.
- Medical cover from the first pound : no excess to clear before treatment counts. Aim for ≈£250,000 as a floor and ≈£420,000 outside Europe.
- Direct billing with the hospital : the insurer settles with the hospital so you never advance thousands on a card. All six GB plans include it.
- A duration limit longer than your trip : check it before price. A cheaper plan that stops at 183 days is useless for an eight-month stay.
- Repatriation at actual cost : not a fixed sum. Every plan in our GB shortlist covers it at actual cost, which is what you want.
- An age limit above your age : ceilings run from 39 to 84 across these plans, and the cheapest one has the lowest cut-off.
- Multi-country cover : you will move. Confirm the plan allows several destinations on one policy rather than a single named country.
On baggage, the ceilings are modest: ≈£210 on Go Explore, ≈£960 on WorldSecure Basic and ≈£1,700 on WorldSecure Platinum and Safe Start. If you travel with real kit, read our baggage insurance guide before you assume you are covered.
What does digital nomad insurance not cover?
Digital nomad insurance does not cover your professional liability, routine or ongoing healthcare, or the full value of your work equipment. We read the policy wordings to confirm each of these rather than repeating the marketing.
- Anything arising from your work : the liability section of Go Explore + excludes "damage resulting from the exercise of any professional activity", and WorldSecure Platinum's civil liability excludes professional activity in the same terms. A client suing you over your work is not a travel-insurance claim.
- Your laptop, in practice : the best electronics line across these plans is ≈£80, and four of the six cover no equipment at all. Buy standalone gadget cover.
- Laptop theft in the wrong circumstances : Go Explore + only pays if the device was being carried by you or locked in a safe. Left in a room or handed to a company, it is excluded, with an excess of about £22 per claim.
- Full replacement value : payouts are depreciated. Go Explore + pays 100% of the purchase price in year one, 75% in year two, then 10% less each year after.
- Routine and ongoing care : these are emergency travel policies, not health insurance. Check-ups, dental work, optical and maternity sit outside them.
- Trip cancellation, mostly : four of the six plans do not cover it at all. Only WorldSecure Platinum and World Travel include any cancellation cover.
Personal liability on a travel policy covers you as a private individual: you break someone’s window, you injure someone on a scooter. The moment the claim relates to work you were paid for, it falls outside the policy. If you invoice clients, professional indemnity is a separate purchase and no travel insurer sells it to you as an add-on.
Does digital nomad insurance meet nomad visa requirements?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Many nomad-visa schemes require a local health policy rather than travel insurance, so digital nomad insurance bought as a travel policy can satisfy one country's application and be rejected by the next.
Spain is the clearest example. Its digital nomad visa asks for cover from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, matching what the Spanish public system provides, with no co-payments or deductibles and valid for the whole visa period. A standard travel policy does not meet that test, whatever its medical ceiling. Portugal, Croatia, Greece, Estonia, Italy and Malta all attach health-cover conditions to their long-stay routes too, with different wording in each.
The practical order is: read the specific consulate's requirement first, then buy. If the requirement names a local insurer or bans co-payments, you need a health plan. If it simply asks for medical and repatriation cover for the length of the stay, a long-stay travel policy usually clears it. Our long-stay national visa guide covers the European rules in more detail, and the wider digital nomad guide covers visas and income.
Does a GHIC replace digital nomad insurance abroad?
No. A UK Global Health Insurance Card stops being valid the moment you emigrate, it only works in Europe, and it never covers repatriation. It is not a substitute for digital nomad insurance on a long stay.
The NHS Business Services Authority is explicit about this: the card "will expire on the date you emigrate", and "if you have an existing UK GHIC or UK EHIC and have moved to another country, your card is no longer valid". Entitlement is based on being ordinarily resident in the UK, and applicants are asked whether they plan to move abroad within five years. Source: NHS Business Services Authority, accessed August 2026.
Even while it is valid, a GHIC gets you state-provided treatment in EU countries on the same terms as a local, which can still mean paying a share of the bill, and it does nothing outside Europe or for a flight home. That is the gap a travel policy fills, and why our travel insurance UK hub treats the two as complements rather than alternatives.
Your questions about digital nomad insurance, answered
It is not legally required to work remotely abroad, but many long-stay and digital nomad visas make proof of health cover a condition of the application, and without it you have no safety net once your GHIC lapses.
364 days. We tested this day by day on our live pricing engine in August 2026: at 365 days every plan refuses to quote. Beyond a year you need an international health plan instead.
Yes, but only before it expires. Go Explore + requires the renewal request in writing before the current cover ends, and its terms end insurability after 36 months abroad. A request made after expiry counts as a new application.
For medical emergencies, yes. Go Explore +’s accident cover applies to both professional and private life. What is excluded is liability: damage arising from any professional activity sits outside the policy.
Barely. The best electronics line across the six plans a UK resident can buy is ≈£80, and four cover no equipment at all. Even then the device must have been carried by you or in a safe, with an excess of about £22 and a depreciated payout.
From £224.28 for a 30-year-old leaving the UK for Thailand, up to £503.20 for the most expensive plan. The median across all six quoting plans is £436.30. Quotes captured August 2026.
Your travel policy cannot be extended past 364 days. At that point you move to an international health plan, which starts at £41.80 a month for a UK resident but will not sell you a term shorter than 364 days.
No. Spain requires cover from an insurer authorised in Spain, matching the public system, with no co-payments and valid for the whole visa. A travel policy does not qualify, however high its medical ceiling.
Call the 24/7 assistance number on your policy before you go to hospital wherever you can. All six GB plans include direct billing, so the insurer settles with the hospital and you avoid advancing the money, but only if assistance has opened the file.
