Backpacker travel insurance: 12-month multi-country cover from £1.25 a day
- Multi-country cover
- Theft & baggage
- Budget-friendly
Is backpacker travel insurance worth it for a long trip?
Backpacker travel insurance covers one long, multi-country trip, up to 12 months on the plans we compare, where standard single-trip policies stop after a few weeks. Real UK quotes start at £37.35 for one month and £224.12 for six months across Thailand, Mexico and Australia, about £1.25 a day.
It is worth it because one hospital admission can dwarf years of premiums. The FCDO cites £25,000 or more for a broken leg in Spain and £150,000 or more for an illness needing treatment and evacuation in the USA. The NHS pays nothing towards care abroad, and a GHIC only applies in Europe and never funds repatriation.
The real question is which plan fits a backpacker's route, and that is decided in the fine print. Our audit of the six plans sold to UK residents found one that stops quoting at 184 days, one that caps baggage at £210, and only one whose option list actually covers scuba diving with tanks. This guide names them all, with real August 2026 prices.
Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.

The best backpacker travel insurance for most UK travellers in 2026 is WorldSecure Platinum: 365-day trips, a £1,700 baggage limit, cancellation cover up to £7,500 and the only risk-sports option on our shortlist, at £470.65 for six months. WorldSecure Basic is the budget pick at £224.12 if you are under 40.
Our expert's pick for backpackers
On a long trip you want three things paid without drama: a hospital bill on the other side of the world, a stolen rucksack, and a flight home if everything goes wrong. WorldSecure Platinum is the plan I recommend first: it is the only one on our shortlist whose Risk Sports option brings scuba diving with tanks and mountaineering into cover, it carries the joint-highest baggage limit at £1,700, and it refunds up to £7,500 if you must cancel before departure, for £470.65 over six months. Under 40 and on a tight budget? WorldSecure Basic keeps the same £250,000 medical core and direct hospital billing for £224.12 over six months, but skip it if you plan adventure sports: it has no option for them. A. How much does backpacker travel insurance cost?
Backpacker travel insurance costs from £37.35 for one month to £941.30 for a top 12-month plan, based on real HelloSafe quotes captured in August 2026. On a six-month multi-country route, budget about £1.25 a day for essential cover (£224.12) and about £2.61 a day for our premium pick (£470.65).
Trip | Budget | Average | Premium | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
1 month Age 25, Thailand, Mexico, Australia | £37.35 (WorldSecure Basic) | £74.71 | £62.75 (WorldSecure Platinum) | All six plans quote, from about £1.25 a day |
3 months Age 30, Thailand and Brazil | £112.06 (WorldSecure Basic) | £210.98 | £188.26 (WorldSecure Platinum) | Slow multi-country routes still priced by all six plans |
6 months Age 25, Thailand, Mexico, Australia | £224.12 (WorldSecure Basic) | £435.98 | £470.65 (WorldSecure Platinum) | The last window for Safe Start, which stops at 184 days |
12 months Age 25, Thailand, Mexico, Australia | £448.24 (WorldSecure Basic) | £754.73 | £941.30 (WorldSecure Platinum) | Safe Start no longer quotes; WorldSecure Basic is under-40s only |
Two things move the price more than anything else: your age and the trip length. WorldSecure Basic scales almost linearly (£37.35 for a month, £448.24 for a year), while WorldSecure Platinum jumps to £941.30 over 12 months because its cancellation and sports cover ride along. Gap-year students under 34 have a separate route: World Student prices a full year abroad at £481.76 on a study or internship trip. For shorter holidays, our best travel insurance comparison shows how these long-trip prices stack up against standard cover.
What does backpacker travel insurance cover?
Backpacker travel insurance covers emergency medical bills abroad (£210,000 to £420,000 on our shortlist), repatriation at actual cost, baggage from £210 to £1,700, personal liability and search and rescue. Trip cancellation is the exception: only two of the six plans include any.

Guarantee | On our shortlist | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
Emergency medical Hospital care abroad | £210,000 to £420,000 | Direct billing on all six plans, no upfront payment |
Repatriation Medical evacuation home | Actual costs | The assistance team decides and organises the transport |
Baggage and belongings Theft, damage, loss | £210 to £1,700 | Phones and laptops are often excluded, see the fine print |
Search and rescue | £2,500 to £5,000 | The higher caps matter on trekking routes |
Personal liability | Up to £3,800,000 | Damage linked to paid work is excluded |
Trip cancellation | Only 2 plans of 6 | WorldSecure Platinum up to £7,500, World Travel £1,300 |
What makes a backpacker different from a holidaymaker is exposure: several regions on one policy, months in hostels, and gear you carry every day. That is why the medical ceiling, the theft wording and the per-trip duration matter more than any headline discount. For the general picture of each guarantee, see what travel insurance covers.
Which backpacker travel insurance conditions should you check before buying?
Four conditions decide whether backpacker travel insurance actually pays: the trip-length cap, the baggage exclusions list, the activities wording and the age rules. We read the binding policy documents behind our shortlist; here is what to check before you pay.
- A duration cap that fits your route : most plans run to 365 days, but Safe Start stops at 184; leave room to extend
- Medical cover of £210,000 or more with direct billing : every shortlisted plan pays the hospital directly, so you never advance the bill
- A baggage limit that matches your kit : £1,700 on WorldSecure Platinum and Safe Start versus £210 on Go Explore
- The sports option if you will dive or climb : scuba diving with tanks needs the Risk Sports option, only available with WorldSecure Platinum
- An age rule you actually pass : WorldSecure Basic closes at 39, WorldSecure Platinum at 65, World Travel runs to 84
- Buying after departure : an 8-day waiting period applies to all benefits on the WorldSecure policies
- Valuables and electronics in baggage claims : jewellery, laptops, phones and sports gear sit on the excluded-items list
- Theft without a police report : no report from a local authority means no compensation, and claims close after 3 months
- Unattended luggage : theft cover generally stops the moment your rucksack is out of sight
- Motor accidents as a driver : the Go Explore + wording excludes them from its personal accident cover
The excluded-items list catches more backpackers than any ceiling: on the Globe Partner wording behind WorldSecure Basic, phones, laptops and sports equipment do not count towards the £960 baggage limit at all. Read the list before you assume your camera is insured.
If your electronics are worth more than the rest of your rucksack, a dedicated baggage insurance policy plugs exactly that gap, with its own limits and its own excluded-items list to check.
How long does backpacker travel insurance cover you abroad?
Backpacker travel insurance sold to UK residents covers a single trip of up to 12 months: 365 days on four of the six plans we compare, 364 on WorldSecure Basic and only 184 on Safe Start. Age rules narrow it further: the cheapest plan closes at 39, the most tolerant runs to 84.
Plan | Max trip length | Ages | 12-month price |
|---|---|---|---|
WorldSecure Platinum Our premium pick | 365 days | 0 to 65 | £941.30 |
WorldSecure Basic Our budget pick | 364 days | 0 to 39 | £448.24 |
Go Explore + | 365 days | 0 to 80 | £754.73 |
Go Explore | 365 days | 0 to 80 | £526.78 |
World Travel | 365 days | 0 to 84 | £765.26 |
Safe Start | 184 days | 0 to 69 | Not available |
The 184-day cap is not theoretical: when we priced the identical 12-month route, Safe Start simply vanished from the results. Extensions have their own rule on the Globe Traveller wording behind the WorldSecure plans: cover can reach 12 months across one or several policies, subject to the insurer's agreement, but the new policy must start the day the old one ends. Any gap restarts an 8-day waiting period on every benefit. Some UK competitors sell 18-month backpacker policies; the plans we compare stop at 12 months, so build your route around that ceiling.
Does backpacker travel insurance cover adventure sports and scooter riding?
Not by default: backpacker travel insurance wordings exclude many activities backpackers actually plan. Scuba diving with tanks, mountaineering and combat sports need the Risk Sports option that comes with WorldSecure Platinum; rafting, canyoning and bungee jumping are excluded outright on the Go Explore wording.
The contract detail is worth reading twice. The Globe Traveller wording (WorldSecure plans) excludes bobsleigh, skeleton, mountaineering, aerial sports except parasailing, combat sports, off-piste sliding sports and scuba diving with tanks unless the Risk Sports option is selected at purchase, with no stated altitude limit for trekking. The Globe Trotter wording behind Go Explore and Go Explore + goes further: mountaineering, rock climbing, speleology, bungee jumping, rafting, canyoning, jet-skiing and kite-surfing are excluded, scuba diving is out apart from freediving to less than 50 m, and so is any sport using mechanical equipment, as driver or passenger.
That last clause is the scooter clause. Renting a moped in Asia is the classic backpacker accident, and the Go Explore + wording excludes accidents you have as the driver of a motor vehicle from its personal accident cover. The FCDO's example is sobering: a quad bike accident in Greece can cost £80,000 or more in treatment and evacuation. If your route includes scooter days, check this clause first and see our guide to travel insurance for Thailand for the destination detail.
Can backpacker travel insurance cover a working holiday?
The tourist policies behind backpacker travel insurance are not built for paid work: the wordings we read exclude damage linked to professional activity from liability cover and stay silent on casual jobs. For a working holiday visa, a dedicated product such as Globe PVT / WHV, from £26.99, is the right shape.
Two neighbouring profiles have better-fitting products than a tourist plan. Working holiday makers get visa-compliant cover designed for the job months, with Globe PVT / WHV quoted from £26.99 (the final price depends on your destination and duration). Gap-year students under 34 can insure a full year abroad with World Student at £481.76 on a study or internship trip, real quote, August 2026. The plans on this page then suit the pure travel legs before and after.
Do you really need backpacker travel insurance as a UK traveller?
Yes, more than almost any other traveller: the NHS pays nothing towards treatment abroad, a GHIC only works in Europe and never covers repatriation, and a months-long route multiplies the chances of one bad day. The FCDO cites £25,000 for a broken leg in Spain and £150,000 for hospital treatment in the USA.
The UK Global Health Insurance Card entitles you to state healthcare in the EU and a few linked countries, nothing more: it does not apply in Thailand, Australia or the Americas, and it never pays for a medical flight home. The FCDO's foreign travel insurance guidance adds a second trap for long routes: travelling to a region where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel can invalidate your policy entirely. Standard travel insurance UK policies are built for holidays of a few weeks; on a gap year, the long-trip plans on this page are the ones designed to hold for the distance.
Backpacker travel insurance: what else do you need to know?
You can, but read the waiting period first: on the WorldSecure policies, cover bought after departure only starts paying after an 8-day waiting period on all benefits. Buying before you fly avoids the wait entirely and keeps cancellation cover meaningful.
Each plan sets its own cap: WorldSecure Basic accepts travellers up to 39, WorldSecure Platinum up to 65, Safe Start up to 69, Go Explore and Go Explore + up to 80, and World Travel up to 84. HelloSafe data, August 2026.
Yes. All six plans we compare for UK residents are multi-destination: one policy covers the whole route. Our reference quote covers Thailand, Mexico and Australia for six months from £224.12.
Only with the right option. Scuba diving with tanks is excluded from the Globe Traveller wording unless the Risk Sports option is selected, which on our shortlist means WorldSecure Platinum. The Go Explore wording excludes scuba altogether apart from freediving to less than 50 m.
Check the wording before you rent: the Go Explore + policy excludes accidents you have as the driver of a motor vehicle from its personal accident cover, and sports using mechanical equipment are excluded as driver or passenger. The FCDO cites a quad bike accident in Greece at £80,000 or more.
Usually not through baggage cover: the Globe Partner wording behind WorldSecure Basic excludes phones, laptops, jewellery and sports equipment from its £960 baggage limit. Any theft claim also needs a report filed with a local authority, and claims close after 3 months.
Between £224.12 (WorldSecure Basic) and £502.83 (World Travel) for one traveller aged 25 covering Thailand, Mexico and Australia from the UK, real quotes captured in August 2026. The median of the six matching plans is £435.98.
Yes, up to 12 months in total on the WorldSecure policies, subject to the insurer’s agreement, but the new policy must start the day the previous one ends. Any gap between policies triggers a fresh 8-day waiting period on every benefit.
No. A UK GHIC only entitles you to state healthcare in the EU and a few linked countries, and it never covers repatriation, private treatment or mountain rescue. It is no help in Thailand, Australia or the Americas, exactly where most backpacker routes go.
Mostly no: four of the six plans we compare exclude cancellation entirely. WorldSecure Platinum refunds up to £7,500 of prepaid costs and World Travel up to £1,300. If cancellation matters to you, that narrows the shortlist to those two plans.
