Is family travel insurance worth it for a UK family?

Family travel insurance covers every named traveller on one policy. For a UK family of four it starts at £63.26 for a week in Spain, about £2.26 per person per day (HelloSafe, August 2026), against medical bills abroad that the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) puts at £25,000 and up.

Four travellers do not just add their risks, they multiply the ways one incident wrecks the booking: a child ill 48 hours before departure cancels four seats, not one. The FCDO's own examples: a broken leg in Spain costs £25,000 plus with evacuation, a quad-bike accident in Greece £80,000 plus, a stomach bug treated in an American hospital can pass £150,000.

The free GHIC (UK Global Health Insurance Card) helps in EU state hospitals, yet pays nothing towards repatriation, private clinics, ski rescue or a cancelled holiday. Travel insurance carries exactly those bills, and for families the plan you pick decides who sits at a sick child's bedside, and who pays.

Our methodology

Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.

Which family travel insurance should UK parents choose?

Six plans on the HelloSafe panel insure a UK family departing this autumn. WorldSecure Platinum leads for most families: £125.60 covered 2 adults and 2 children for a Spain half-term week, with cancellation up to £7,500 built in (HelloSafe, August 2026).

If a child ends up in hospital abroad, the right plan means you advance nothing: the hospital is paid directly, and after 6 days it flies a relative out and pays their hotel at the bedside. If you must call the whole holiday off, the booking is refunded. WorldSecure Platinum is the only plan of the six doing all of this, with cancellation sized for a family booking (trip price up to £7,500) and £3,800,000 of liability for what children break, at £125.60 for four in Spain. Prefer Go Explore + for long-haul medical depth (£420,000 per person, our USA pick), WorldSecure Basic at £63.26 if both parents are under 40, and World Travel when grandparents up to 84 or a party of 20 come along.

Kids' cover

Are children covered free on family travel insurance?

Children are covered by family travel insurance only when named on the policy with their date of birth. Whether they are free depends on the plan: on our panel a second young child costs £0 on Go Explore and full adult price on World Travel (August 2026 quotes).

There is no junior half-policy: a declared child is a full insured person with their own medical ceiling and liability cover, and an undeclared child has no cover at all. UK high-street brands often advertise kids-go-free deals; the honest comparison is the total family premium for the cover you actually get, not the label.

Warning

Contrary to common belief, children are never covered by default simply because they travel with their parents. Every child must be named on the certificate, with travel dates matching the booking.

Must cover

What must family travel insurance cover for parents and children?

A family travel insurance policy earns its keep on six guarantees. Our guide to what travel insurance covers details the standard set; here is the family reading, with the panel's real figures.

  • Per-person medical ceiling : £210,000 to £420,000 per traveller here, and the WorldSecure wording applies it per insured per year, not as one shared family pot
  • Direct billing : the assistance line pays the hospital itself, no card deposit from you; all six panel plans include it
  • Repatriation at actual cost : uncapped medical transport home on every panel plan, the bill the FCDO prices at £150,000 plus from the USA
  • Bedside companion cover : transport plus hotel for a relative while a child is hospitalised, from day 6 on WorldSecure Platinum and day 5 on Go Explore +
  • Personal liability per child : £1,300,000 to £3,800,000 here; a broken rental or an injured playmate otherwise bills the parents
  • Baggage that matches your kit : £210 to £1,700 per person across the panel; pricey kit deserves dedicated baggage insurance
  • Age caps : WorldSecure Basic stops at 39, WorldSecure Platinum at 65, Safe Start at 69; only World Travel reaches 84
  • Party-size limits : Go Explore takes 6 travellers, Safe Start 11, World Travel 20; check yours fits first
  • Cancellation missing : 4 of the 6 plans have none, and World Travel's £1,300 cap will not refund a £3,000 package
  • Excess charged per person : about £25 per condition per insured on the panel's lower cover tiers; one family bug can mean four excesses
  • Minors' return not always written : the Go Explore + wording has no explicit clause flying children home if their parent is repatriated
Fine print

Which family travel insurance conditions catch parents out?

The conditions that decide a family travel insurance claim sit in the policy wording, not the price table. We read the binding contract terms of the shortlisted plans; three clauses deserve a parent's attention before paying.

Bedside cover has a day trigger. WorldSecure Platinum flies a relative out and pays bed-and-breakfast accommodation once a child has been hospitalised more than 6 days before repatriation; Go Explore + pays from day 5, around £67 a night for up to 10 nights, meals excluded (policy wordings read August 2026). Ceilings and excesses run per person: each insured draws on a full medical ceiling per year, and each pays their own excess, about £25 per condition on the lower cover tiers, waived on the top tier.

Cancellation must come built in. The standalone cancellation add-on currently returns no plans on UK quotes, a genuine gap. Pick cover with it included, such as WorldSecure Platinum refunding the trip price up to £7,500, and buy when you book: cancellation only protects the window between booking and departure. Go Explore + must also be bought at least 1 day before you leave.

Book-time beats airport-time

Half term and summer are paid for months ahead. A policy bought the week you book protects those prepayments from day one; one bought the night before departure protects only the trip itself.

GHIC

Do you still need family travel insurance with a GHIC?

Yes. The GHIC entitles your family to state healthcare in the EU on the same terms as locals, but pays nothing towards repatriation, private hospitals, mountain rescue or a cancelled holiday, so family travel insurance still carries the real financial risk.

The card is free from the NHS, lasts up to 5 years, and every member of your family needs their own, children included. It covers medically necessary state care, ongoing treatment for chronic conditions and routine maternity care. The Foreign Office is blunt about the rest: GHIC and EHIC (the old European Health Insurance Card) are not alternatives to travel insurance, covering no private healthcare, no repatriation and no mountain rescue.

Annual cover

Is annual family travel insurance worth it for UK families?

Usually not on this panel. Annual family travel insurance starts at £938.99 a year for 2 adults and 2 children (Safe World), while three separate insured weeks in Europe cost £190 to £331 in total. Multi-trip cover only wins for families travelling far more often than the school calendar allows.

For the classic summer, half-term and Christmas pattern: three budget single-trip policies cost £189.78, three mid-range Go Explore weeks £330.69, against £938.99 and £2,870.63 for the only two annual plans matching a 2-plus-2 family. Run both numbers if you fly more often, remember a cruise needs its own cover type, and for solo or couple trips start from the best travel insurance ranking.

FAQ

What else do parents ask about family travel insurance?

  • Real HelloSafe quotes from August 2026: £63.26 to £207.03 for 2 adults and 2 children spending 7 nights in Spain over half term, and from £161.03 for 14 nights in the USA. The cheapest Spain cover works out around £2.26 per person per day.

  • Not usually on pan-European plans, which price each traveller. Go Explore was the exception in our capture: a second young child added nothing (£110.23 with one or two children). Kids-go-free deals exist on the UK high street; compare the total family premium.

  • Yes, at the same per-person rates as a couple. One adult aged 38 with children of 8 and 6 was quoted £47.43 to £155.22 for a Spain week in August 2026, with no single-parent surcharge on any panel plan.

  • World Travel accepts travellers up to 84 in parties of up to 20, and Safe Start goes to 69 with up to 11 travellers. WorldSecure Platinum stops at 65 and WorldSecure Basic at 39, so check every traveller passes the age rule before comparing prices.

  • No. It grants state healthcare on local terms, and every family member needs their own free NHS card, but it never pays for repatriation, private treatment, ski rescue or cancellation. The FCDO states plainly it is not an alternative to travel insurance.

  • Two do. WorldSecure Platinum refunds the trip price up to £7,500; World Travel caps cancellation at £1,300, short of a £3,000 booking. The other four carry none, and the standalone cancellation add-on is currently unavailable on UK quotes.

  • The week you book. Cancellation protects the window between booking and departure, so a policy bought months ahead guards deposits and balance payments. Go Explore + must be bought at least 1 day before departure.

  • The panel plan sheets list no automatic cover for pre-existing conditions: declare any condition when you quote and check the policy wording before paying. Within the EU, the GHIC separately entitles state care for chronic conditions on local terms.
