Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Qantas Signature
Unlimited overseas medical. Thin phone cover. That gap sits inside an otherwise strong travel policy. Charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card, hold a return ticket, and the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Qantas Signature travel insurance switches on for up to six months overseas: unlimited emergency medical, cancellation with no dollar cap, a $300 excess per claim. The kicker: it only works if you activated it. Most cardholders assume holding the card is enough. It isn't, and a points booking where only the taxes hit the card can leave you uninsured. If you always charge your flights to the card, the overseas cover genuinely does the job; if you book on points, read the activation clause before you fly.

Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What cardholders say about the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Qantas Signature
Real experiences on travel cover, rental excess and activation 15 reviews
AustralianFrequentFlyer
Rental excess cover let me skip the counter upsell
The Rental Vehicle Excess cover will cover your excess in the event of an accident, so there is no need to pay the extra daily charge to the rental company.
AustralianFrequentFlyer
Unclear whether points-booking taxes activate the cover
You need to spend at least $500 on your prepaid travel costs before leaving Australia. If you book on points and only the taxes go on the card, it is not clear that counts, so the cover might not switch on.
AustralianFrequentFlyer
Get activation confirmed in writing before you fly
Send them an email and request confirmation so you have it in writing, because whether taxes on a points booking meet the spend condition is not spelled out.

How to make an Amplify Qantas Signature claim
Step 1: Call the 24/7 assistance line before treatment where possible
For a medical or evacuation emergency overseas, call Allianz Global Assistance on +61 7 3305 7468 before treatment where you can. Within Australia the emergency line is 1800 227 773. Save both numbers in your phone before you fly.
Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents
Lodge online at insurance.agaassistance.com.au/bankmelb or call 1800 091 710. Gather itemised accounts, a property irregularity report for luggage, the rental agreement and repair invoice for a hire-car excess, and receipts for any delay expenses.
Step 3: Prove the trip was charged to the card
Include your card statement showing at least $500 of prepaid travel was charged to the Amplify Qantas Signature. Activation is the first thing the insurer checks, so keep this proof with your claim.
What people ask about the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Qantas Signature
- The overseas cover switches on when you charge at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs to the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Qantas Signature and hold a return overseas travel ticket, before you leave Australia. There is no separate registration step, but the cover is not automatic just from holding the card. You also need to be aged under 81 when the cover would start. Prepaid costs can include your return airfare, airport or departure taxes, accommodation and other prepaid itinerary items. If you book on points and only the taxes hit the card, that may not meet the $500 condition, so check the PDS or email the insurer for written confirmation first.
- Cover extends to the cardholder, their spouse or de facto partner, and dependants who are travelling with the cardholder, once the trip is charged to the card. A dependant means a child under 25 who is not in full-time employment, or a person the cardholder cares for who cannot support themselves. Each traveller has to meet the same $500 spend, return-ticket and under-81 age conditions to be eligible. When a cardholder, spouse and dependant travel together, only one person can claim the cardholder benefits. Always check each traveller against the covered-persons definition in your PDS before relying on the cover.
- It reimburses the excess (the amount the hire company makes you pay towards damage or theft) you are liable for after a hire car is damaged or stolen, up to $5,500. It does not waive the damage, so the hire company still charges you the excess and you claim it back afterwards, with a $300 excess per claim. The Amplify Qantas Signature covers this both overseas, inside the international travel policy, and within Australia through a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit. To qualify, charge the full rental cost to the card and stay within the terms of the rental agreement.
- Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind this policy, online at insurance.agaassistance.com.au/bankmelb or on 1800 091 710. Lodge the claim as soon as you can, and keep the documents that prove the loss: itemised accounts for medical or delay costs, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, the rental agreement and repair invoice for a hire-car excess, and your card statement showing the trip was charged. Some cardholders report clean approvals within a few weeks. Others describe repeated document requests, so lodge early and keep everything dated. For a medical emergency overseas, call the 24-hour line on +61 7 3305 7468 first.
- The biggest gap is activation: if you did not charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card, there is no international cover at all. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded unless they are on the auto-covered list or you have them assessed for a $45 fee, and cover stops once a trip runs past six months. Off-piste skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, though on-piste skiing is covered. There is no mobile phone insurance, no refund or price cover, and no medical cover for domestic trips, since Medicare applies within Australia. Anyone aged 81 or over is not covered overseas.
- Yes. On top of the overseas rental excess in the travel policy, the Amplify Qantas Signature includes a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit. It reimburses the excess you are liable for after a hire car is damaged or stolen within Australia, up to the lesser of the excess in your rental agreement or $5,500, with a $300 excess per claim. You need to charge the entire vehicle rental to the card to be eligible. It does not cover administrative fees the rental company adds, tyres and windscreens that fall outside the agreement excess, or use that breaches the rental agreement.
- Yes, through a separate Interstate Flight Inconvenience benefit that applies when the entire return interstate airfare is charged to the card. It covers domestic flight cancellation up to $3,000, flight delay of 4 hours or more, luggage up to $1,500 and luggage delay, but not overseas-style medical cover, because Medicare applies within Australia. Cover runs for up to 14 days from the start of the interstate journey. It is genuine protection for interstate air travel, not a full domestic travel policy, and it does not include extra travel or accommodation expenses from illness on the trip.
- Some are automatically covered, others are not. The policy auto-covers a defined list of stable conditions, such as controlled asthma, hypertension or diabetes, as long as you meet the requirements set out in the PDS. Conditions outside that list, or that do not meet the requirements, are excluded unless you apply for assessment online or by phone and pay a $45 administration fee. If Allianz Global Assistance confirms cover in writing after assessment, your condition is included for that trip. Without that confirmation, any claim arising from the condition can be declined, which is expensive for an overseas medical emergency.
- On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, because they are not named in the dangerous-activities exclusion. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, so a claim from skiing outside the marked runs would be declined. Your ski equipment is also not covered while it is in use, so treat expensive gear as uninsured on the slopes. If you plan off-piste or backcountry runs, a dedicated snow travel policy is the safer option. Racing and any activity you are paid more than $1,000 to take part in are excluded too.
- No. The Amplify Qantas Signature does not include mobile phone or screen insurance, so theft of or accidental damage to your phone is not covered. Purchase protection can cover a newly bought phone against theft or accidental damage for four months from purchase, up to $10,000 per item with a $300 excess, but that is a short window, not ongoing phone cover. Once those four months pass, a cracked screen, usually $200 to $600 to repair, or a replacement handset at $1,200 to $2,300, is out of pocket. A standalone mobile insurance policy or your home contents cover is the way to fill this gap.
