Our take on travel insurance for the Bendigo Bank Platinum Rewards

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Broad cover, capped excess, one hard exclusion. The Bendigo Platinum Rewards travel insurance runs wider than most bank cards: $20 million for overseas emergency medical and evacuation, cancellation to $50,000, and interstate cover on top. Charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card, hold a return ticket, and it switches on. Here's the catch. Most cardholders assume holding the card is enough. It isn't, and a points booking where only the taxes hit the card can leave you uninsured. The other bite is pre-existing conditions: any claim linked to one is excluded outright, with no assessment option to add it back. A standalone policy assesses stable conditions and runs past the 3-month trip cap. If you take short overseas trips, always charge them to the card, and travel in good health, the cover earns its place. If you manage an ongoing condition, read the exclusions first.

What works on travel
  • Overseas emergency medical and evacuation up to $20,000,000, with a $250 excess per claim
  • Cancellation up to $50,000 with a broad covered-reasons list, from illness to strikes and natural disasters
  • Interstate travel cover included: domestic cancellation, flight delay and luggage, which many cards skip
  • Trip length up to 3 consecutive months, longer than the 30 to 40 days some cards cap at
  • Personal liability overseas up to $2,500,000, with a $250 excess rather than the $400 some Allianz cards charge
Where travel breaks down
  • Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded outright, with no assessment or auto-covered list
  • Activation by spend: no cover unless you charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return ticket
  • Overseas medical carries a $250 excess on every claim, and emergency dental sits at a $1,250 sub-limit
  • Cover stops at 3 consecutive months per trip, so a longer journey is uninsured past that point

What does Bendigo Bank Platinum Rewards Travel Insurance actually cover?

Cover only applies if you charged at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return ticket. Any pre-existing medical condition is excluded outright, with no assessment option.

Deductible : A$250

Covers the non-refundable portion of prepaid travel and accommodation you cannot recover, up to a total of $50,000, with a $250 excess per claim. The covered-reasons list is broad: illness or injury, a relative's death or serious illness, carrier cancellation from mechanical breakdown, strikes, riots, weather or natural disaster, quarantine, a destroyed home, a court subpoena, and retrenchment. Cover only applies once you charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return overseas ticket. Any claim linked to a pre-existing medical condition is excluded.

What's covered
  • Serious injury or illness of you or a travel companion
  • Death or serious illness of a relative in Australia
  • Carrier cancellation from mechanical breakdown, strikes, riots, weather or natural disaster

What's not covered
  • Any claim arising from a pre-existing medical condition
  • Reasons you were aware of before becoming eligible
  • Business or contractual obligations, changing plans, an act of terrorism
The $20m limit means little unless you activated cover by charging $500 of prepaid travel to the card. Pre-existing conditions are not covered at all, so a flare-up overseas is on you.

Deductible : A$250

Covers overseas emergency medical and hospital costs up to $20,000,000, with a $250 excess per claim. Treatment can continue for up to 12 consecutive months from your departure date if you cannot travel home. Emergency dental for sudden acute toothache carries a separate $1,250 sub-limit. No claim arising from a pre-existing medical condition is payable.

What's covered
  • Overseas hospital and medical treatment for injury or sickness
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation arranged by the 24/7 line
  • Treatment for up to 12 months from departure if you cannot return

Treated like a premium client

I have made 3 claims on complimentary policies in recent years (ANZ-Allianz and CBA - Covermore). In all cases I was treated like a premium client not a leper.

G(

Slow, repeated document requests

They take 10 days to respond to a claim, and on the 10th day, ask a clarifying question. 10 days post answering, they come back with additional requests for info they already have. All up, it took just under 40 days for my claim to be assessed.

How to make a Platinum Rewards claim

1

Step 1: Call the 24/7 Allianz Global Assistance line before treatment where possible

For a medical emergency, evacuation or large expense overseas, call +61 7 3305 7499 before you incur the cost so Allianz can approve it. Within Australia the emergency line is 1800 010 075.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents

Lodge online at claimmanager.com.au or call 1300 889 828 as soon as reasonably possible. Keep itemised accounts, police or carrier reports for lost luggage, and your rental agreement showing the excess charged.

3

Step 3: Prove the trip was charged to the card

Include the card statement showing at least $500 of prepaid travel was charged to the account, the condition that activates cover. Allianz aims to consider a completed claim within 10 business days.

FAQ

What people ask about the Bendigo Bank Platinum Rewards

  • The overseas cover switches on when you spend at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs on the card and hold a return overseas ticket, before you leave Australia. Prepaid travel means your return flights, prepaid accommodation, a cruise or a tour, charged to the card account. There is no separate registration step, but holding the card alone does not insure you. You also need to reside in Australia, and no one aged 81 or over is covered. If you book flights on points and only the taxes hit the card, that may not meet the $500 spend condition, so check before you rely on the cover.
  • Cover extends to the cardholder, plus a spouse or partner and dependants, when each person meets the eligibility on their own. Each must reside in Australia, travel with the cardholder for at least half the journey, have at least $500 of their own prepaid travel charged to the card, and hold a return overseas ticket. Dependent children are those under 25 and not in full-time work, and dependants under two are covered when travelling with the cardholder. When you travel together, only one eligible person can claim a benefit that is payable to a cardholder, so a couple cannot both claim the same loss twice.
  • It reimburses the rental excess you are liable for after a hire car is damaged or stolen, up to $5,500, with a $250 excess per claim. Excess is the amount the hire company makes you pay towards the damage, and this benefit refunds it, it does not waive the damage. Unlike many bank cards, the Bendigo Platinum Rewards covers both overseas hires, inside the travel policy, and Australian hires, under a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit. To qualify, charge the entire vehicle rental to the card. Charges for tyres, glass, roof or underbody beyond the stated excess are not included.
  • Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind the policy, lodged online at claimmanager.com.au or by calling 1300 889 828 within Australia. Give notice as soon as reasonably possible, and Allianz aims to consider a completed claim within 10 business days. Keep the documents that prove the loss: itemised medical accounts, a report to police or the carrier for lost luggage, your rental agreement and the excess charged, and your card statement showing the trip was charged. For anything medical or a large expense overseas, call the 24-hour line on +61 7 3305 7499 before you incur the cost. Activation is the first thing they check.
  • The biggest gap is pre-existing medical conditions, which are excluded outright for you, a travelling companion or a relative, with no assessment option to add them back. Cover does not switch on unless you charged at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return ticket, and overseas trips are capped at 3 consecutive months. There is no mobile phone insurance, no refund cover and no price guarantee. Off-piste skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, and there is no medical cover on domestic trips, since Medicare applies within Australia.
  • No. The Bendigo Platinum Rewards excludes any claim arising from, related to or associated with a pre-existing medical condition, whether it is yours, a travelling companion's or a relative's. Unlike many standalone policies, there is no auto-covered list of stable conditions and no option to have a condition assessed and added for a fee. A pre-existing condition means anything you had symptoms, diagnosis or treatment for before you became eligible for cover. If you manage an ongoing condition, a standalone travel policy that assesses and covers pre-existing conditions is the safer choice for overseas trips.
  • Yes. Unlike many bank cards, the Bendigo Platinum Rewards includes a Domestic Travel Insurance benefit for interstate trips, covering cancellation up to $3,000, flight delay, additional expenses and luggage. Cover applies once you charge the full return domestic airfare to the card, or spend at least $250 on prepaid domestic travel and hold a return domestic ticket. The interstate cover runs for up to 14 days from the start of the journey. There is no domestic medical benefit, because Medicare covers treatment within Australia, and the limits are lower than the overseas policy.
  • Yes. On top of the overseas rental excess in the travel policy, the Bendigo Platinum Rewards has a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit. It reimburses the excess you are liable for after an Australian hire car is damaged or stolen in your custody, up to $5,500 for all claims combined, with a $250 excess per claim. You must charge the entire vehicle rental to the card. It refunds the excess you owe, it does not waive the damage, and charges for tyres, glass, roof or underbody beyond the agreement excess are not covered.
  • No. The Bendigo Platinum Rewards does not include mobile phone insurance under its complimentary cover. Theft of or accidental damage to your phone is not covered by the card. A cracked flagship screen commonly costs $200 to $600 to repair, and a full replacement runs $1,200 to $2,300, all out of pocket. Some older summaries of Bendigo cards listed phone and tablet cover, but the current insurance booklet does not include it. If phone cover matters to you, a dedicated gadget policy or your home contents insurance would fill that gap.
  • On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy, because they are listed as covered activities. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, so a claim from skiing outside the marked runs would be declined. Your ski equipment is not separately insured while in use, and sporting equipment in use is not covered for damage. Racing and training for prize money above $1,000 are also excluded. If you plan backcountry runs, a dedicated snow policy is the safer option.
