Our take on travel insurance for the Heritage Bank Classic

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. None at all. The Heritage Bank Classic travel insurance most people go looking for simply does not exist on this card. Charge a $5,000 trip to it and you are still uninsured, because Heritage keeps complimentary international cover for its Visa Platinum tier, not the Classic. Most cardholders assume any Visa comes with some emergency medical backup overseas, and this one does not, so Medicare stops the moment you leave Australia. A hospital admission in Bali or Bangkok can run $50,000 to $200,000, and every dollar of that is yours. If you are booking an overseas trip on the Classic, treat it as a payment card only and buy a standalone travel insurance policy before you fly.

What works on travel
  • Simple low-rate Visa with up to 55 days interest free on purchases
  • Visa Zero Liability fraud protection applies to unauthorised transactions
  • Annual fee waived if yearly Visa purchases pass $25,000
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas emergency medical cover: a hospital bill abroad is entirely yours, with no assistance line
  • No trip cancellation: prepaid flights and hotels are not refunded if you cancel
  • No domestic interstate flight cover and no rental excess cover of any kind
  • Complimentary travel insurance is reserved for the Heritage Visa Platinum, not the Classic

What does Heritage Bank Classic Travel Insurance actually cover?

No trip cancellation cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel, so a standalone travel insurance policy is required for this coverage.

No overseas emergency medical cover. The card provides no assistance line for treatment abroad. All medical costs overseas are the cardholder's responsibility, Medicare does not cover you outside Australia, and a serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000.

No emergency evacuation cover. Getting you home after a serious injury is not arranged or paid. Emergency evacuation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility, and an air ambulance from Southeast Asia to Australia runs $60,000 to $100,000.

No emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Emergency dental treatment overseas is out of pocket.

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. A daily cash payment during an overseas hospital stay is not provided.

No additional expenses cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Costs from a trip cut short, such as return flights and unused hotels, are out of pocket.

No travel delay cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Meals, accommodation, and transport during a delay are the cardholder's responsibility.

No missed connection cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Rebooking alternative transport after a missed connection is paid out of pocket.

No early return cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. The cost to fly home and resume a trip after a family emergency is out of pocket.

No luggage delay cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Purchases of essential items during a bag delay are out of pocket.

No luggage cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Replacement costs for lost or stolen bags are the cardholder's responsibility.

No travel documents cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Replacing a stolen passport or cards, and any fraudulent use, is handled at your own cost.

No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Legal liability for injury to others or property damage overseas is uninsured, and claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

No accidental death benefit. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. No lump sum is paid to your family after a travel accident.

No loss of income benefit. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Lost earnings after an overseas injury are not replaced.

No domestic cancellation cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Prepaid interstate flights and accommodation are not reimbursable if you cancel.

No domestic flight delay cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Meals and accommodation during an interstate flight delay are the cardholder's responsibility.

No domestic additional expenses cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Extra travel and accommodation costs on an interstate trip are out of pocket.

No domestic luggage cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Lost or damaged bags on a domestic trip are replaced at your own cost.

No domestic luggage delay cover. This benefit is not included with the Classic card. Essential purchases during a domestic bag delay are out of pocket.

FAQ

What people ask about the Heritage Bank Classic

  • There is nothing to activate, because the Heritage Bank Classic does not come with complimentary travel insurance. Heritage keeps complimentary international travel cover for its Visa Platinum credit card, not the Classic tier. Charging your flights and hotels to the Classic will not switch on any medical, cancellation or luggage cover, since none exists on this card. If you are travelling, the practical step is to arrange a standalone travel insurance policy before you leave. Treat the Classic as a payment card for the trip, and rely on a separate policy for the actual protection.
  • No one is covered for insurance under the Heritage Bank Classic, because the card carries no complimentary travel, rental or purchase cover. There is no insured cardholder, no covered spouse or partner, and no covered dependent children, since there is no policy attached to the card. This differs from the Heritage Visa Platinum, which does provide complimentary international travel insurance for eligible cardholders and family. If you need family travel cover, either look at a card that includes it or buy a standalone policy that names each traveller. Always confirm who is covered in that policy's wording.
  • It does not work, because the Heritage Bank Classic includes no rental vehicle excess cover, in Australia or overseas. Excess is the amount the hire company makes you pay towards damage or theft of the vehicle, and on some cards a benefit reimburses it. The Classic has no such benefit, so if a hire car is damaged, the full excess stays with you, commonly $2,000 to $5,500 in Australia. Charging the rental to the card makes no difference to this. If you hire cars, a standalone rental excess policy covers both Australian and overseas hires from a few dollars a day.
  • There is no insurance to claim on, because the Heritage Bank Classic carries no complimentary travel, rental or purchase cover. If you need to report an unauthorised transaction, Visa Zero Liability may apply, and you would contact Heritage Bank on 13 14 22 within Australia, or +61 7 4694 9000 from overseas. For a lost or stolen card, use the same numbers at any hour. For anything travel related, such as a medical bill overseas or a cancelled trip, you would claim on your separate travel insurance policy, not the card. Keep your statements and any incident details ready when you call.
  • The simplest way to put it: the Heritage Bank Classic covers nothing in insurance terms. There is no overseas emergency medical cover, no trip cancellation, no luggage or travel delay cover, and no domestic interstate flight cover. It also has no rental vehicle excess cover, no purchase protection, no extended warranty, and no mobile phone insurance. The only card protection is Visa Zero Liability, which addresses unauthorised transactions rather than travel or purchase risks. For any real travel or purchase protection, you need a standalone policy, since the card itself provides none.
  • No, the Heritage Bank Classic is not enough for overseas travel on its own, because it includes no travel insurance of any kind. Medicare does not cover you outside Australia, and a serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000, all payable by you if you rely on this card. The Classic gives you no emergency medical cover, no cancellation cover and no luggage cover. For an overseas trip, a dedicated travel insurance policy is essential. Compare policies on the travel insurance comparison tool and choose one that matches your destination, trip length and any medical conditions.
  • No, the Heritage Bank Classic does not include mobile phone insurance. If your phone is lost, stolen or accidentally damaged, the card provides no cover towards repair or replacement. A cracked screen on a flagship phone typically costs $200 to $600 to fix, and a full replacement $1,200 to $2,300, all out of pocket with this card. Some premium cards bundle screen cover when you pay your monthly phone bill on the card, but the Classic is not one of them. If phone cover matters to you, consider standalone mobile insurance or a policy through your telco or insurer.
  • No, the Heritage Bank Classic does not cover skiing or snowboarding, because it carries no travel insurance at all. There is no on-piste cover, no off-piste cover, and no cover for medical costs, evacuation or equipment on a snow trip. This matters, because a helicopter rescue and hospital treatment after a skiing injury overseas can cost tens of thousands of dollars. If you are heading to the snow, a dedicated snow travel insurance policy is the safe option, and many general travel policies offer snow cover as an add-on. Do not rely on the Classic for any part of a ski trip.
  • No, the Heritage Bank Classic Visa does not come with complimentary travel insurance. Complimentary international travel cover at Heritage is attached to the Visa Platinum credit card only, so the entry-level Classic has never included it. That means no overseas emergency medical cover, no trip cancellation and no luggage cover when you charge a trip to the Classic. If you want travel insurance, either look at a card that bundles it or buy a standalone policy for each trip. For most Classic cardholders, a separate travel insurance policy is the sensible way to stay protected overseas.
