Our take on travel insurance for the ME Bank frank

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. None on this card. The frank Mastercard is a low-rate, no-frills card, and complimentary cover was never part of the deal. So, you pull it out for a trip to Bali and assume some cover is buried in the terms. There isn't. Medicare pays nothing overseas, so a hospital admission in Southeast Asia, easily $50,000 to $200,000, sits entirely with you. Most people assume any Mastercard comes with travel insurance attached: this one never did. If you were counting on ME Bank frank travel insurance for an overseas trip, treat it as zero and line up a standalone policy before you fly.

What works on travel
  • No annual fee, so you can carry the card overseas without paying to hold it
  • Foreign transaction fee of 2.3%, below the 3% many Australian cards charge on overseas spend
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas medical cover: a serious hospital admission abroad can run $50,000 to $200,000, all on you
  • No trip cancellation, delay or baggage cover: every travel disruption is out of pocket
  • Nothing to activate: there is no complimentary policy on this card to switch on

What does ME Bank frank Travel Insurance actually cover?

No trip cancellation cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel, and a standalone travel insurance policy is required for this coverage.

No overseas emergency medical cover. This benefit is not included with this card. All medical costs overseas are the cardholder's responsibility, and since Medicare does not cover you outside Australia, a serious hospital admission can run $50,000 to $200,000.

No emergency evacuation cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency evacuation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility, and an air ambulance from Southeast Asia to Australia runs $60,000 to $100,000.

No emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency dental treatment overseas is out of pocket.

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with this card. A daily cash payment during an overseas hospital stay is not paid, so incidental costs during admission fall to you.

No additional expenses cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Costs from a trip cut short, such as return flights and unused hotels, are out of pocket.

No travel delay cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Meals, accommodation, and transport during a delay are the cardholder's responsibility.

No missed connection cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost of alternative transport to catch up with a booked itinerary is out of pocket.

No early return cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to fly home and resume a trip after a family emergency is out of pocket.

No luggage delay cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Purchases of essential items during a bag delay are out of pocket.

No luggage cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Replacement costs for lost or stolen bags are the cardholder's responsibility.

No travel documents cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Replacing a stolen passport or covering fraudulent card use overseas is out of pocket.

No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Legal liability for injury to others or property damage overseas is uninsured, and claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

No accidental death benefit. This benefit is not included with this card. No lump sum is paid to your family for an accidental death while travelling.

No loss of income benefit. This benefit is not included with this card. Income lost while you recover from an overseas injury is not replaced.

No domestic cancellation cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Prepaid interstate flights and accommodation are not reimbursable if you cancel.

How claims work on the ME Bank frank card

1

Step 1: Know there is no complimentary insurance to claim

The frank card carries no travel, rental, or purchase insurance, so there is no policy, no insurer, and no claim to lodge for those events. For cover on a trip, you need a standalone travel insurance policy taken out separately.

2

Step 2: For card fraud or a transaction dispute, contact ME Bank

Unauthorised transactions and billing disputes on the card are handled by ME Bank, not an insurer. Call 13 15 63 in Australia, or +61 3 9708 4001 from overseas, and have your statement and transaction details ready. These are chargeback and fraud processes, not insurance claims.

3

Step 3: Report a lost or stolen card straight away

If the card is lost or stolen, cancel it through the ME app or by calling ME Bank, and a replacement will be sent. This is a card-security service, not an insurance benefit.

FAQ

What people ask about the ME Bank frank

  • You cannot, because there is no complimentary travel insurance on the ME Bank frank card to activate. Frank was built as a low-rate, no-frills Mastercard, and it has never carried travel, rental, or purchase cover. On cards that do include cover, it usually switches on after you charge your trip to the card, but frank has no such policy at any spend level. Any memory of activating cover on this card is a mix-up with another product. For an overseas or interstate trip, you need to buy a standalone travel insurance policy, since nothing on the card will step in.
  • No one, because the ME Bank frank card has no complimentary insurance. There is no policy, so there are no covered travellers, whether that is the cardholder, a partner, or children. This is different from a premium card, where cover can extend to family travelling with you once the trip is charged to the card. Frank simply never offered that benefit. If you need cover for yourself or your family on a trip, a standalone travel insurance policy is the way to protect everyone, and you choose exactly who it covers.
  • It does not work, because the ME Bank frank card includes no rental vehicle excess cover. Excess (the amount a hire company charges you towards damage or theft) is entirely your responsibility on this card, whether you hire in Australia or overseas. A rental excess claim commonly runs $2,000 to $8,000, and none of it comes back through frank. Some premium cards reimburse this excess up to a cap, but frank was never one of them. If you hire cars, a standalone rental excess policy covers the excess from a few dollars a day, which is far cheaper than carrying the risk yourself.
  • There is nothing to claim, because the ME Bank frank card carries no complimentary travel, rental, or purchase insurance. With no insurer and no policy behind the card, there is no claims line for these events. What ME Bank can help with is card security: for an unauthorised transaction or a billing dispute, call ME Bank on 13 15 63 in Australia, or +61 3 9708 4001 from overseas. Those are chargeback and fraud processes, not insurance claims. If your issue is a travel, hire-car, or purchase loss, only a standalone policy taken out separately would let you claim.
  • Everything, in practical terms, because the ME Bank frank card has no complimentary insurance at all. There is no overseas emergency medical cover, no trip cancellation, no rental vehicle excess, no purchase protection, and no extended warranty. Medicare pays nothing overseas, so an overseas hospital bill of $50,000 to $200,000 would be entirely yours. The card's genuine plus points are a $0 annual fee and a 2.3% foreign transaction fee, which is below the 3% many cards charge, but neither of those is insurance. Anyone relying on this card for travel needs a standalone policy instead.
  • No. The ME Bank frank card does not include mobile phone insurance, and it carries no complimentary cover of any kind. Theft, loss, or a cracked screen on your phone is not reimbursable through this card. A flagship screen repair typically costs $200 to $600, and a full replacement $1,200 to $2,300, all out of pocket. Some cards bundle screen cover when you pay your phone bill on the card, but frank does not. If phone cover matters to you, look at a dedicated gadget or mobile insurance policy, or check whether another card in your wallet offers it.
  • No. With no travel insurance on the ME Bank frank card, there is no cover for skiing, snowboarding, or any snow-sport injury, on-piste or off-piste. A medical evacuation off a mountain overseas can run into the tens of thousands of dollars, and that would be entirely your cost. Cards that cover snow sports do so through a complimentary travel policy, which frank has never had. For a ski or snowboard trip, in Australia or overseas, a dedicated snow travel policy is the safe option, and it also covers the gear and lift passes you lose if you are hurt.
  • Yes, without question. The ME Bank frank card provides no complimentary travel insurance, so you are travelling uninsured on it unless you arrange your own cover. Overseas medical is the big one: Medicare covers nothing outside Australia, and a serious admission can cost $50,000 to $200,000. A standalone travel insurance policy covers medical, cancellation, luggage, and rental excess in one place, often from a modest premium for a short trip. The frank card is fine for low-cost everyday spending, but treat it as having zero travel protection and book a policy before you go.
