Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum
Three consecutive months per trip, then the overseas cover stops. Unlimited medical up to that line, which is the part worth having. Picture a two-week run through Southeast Asia booked and paid on the St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum: charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card, hold a return ticket, and the St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum travel insurance switches on with unlimited emergency medical, cancellation with no dollar cap, and evacuation coordinated by the 24/7 Allianz line. Here is the part most people miss. Holding the card is not enough; book a Qantas reward seat where only carrier charges hit the plastic, and that $500 spend may not be met, so nothing activates. A $300 excess applies to most claims, cover ends the day you turn 81, and this is the Platinum tier, so you get three months a trip, not the six on Signature. Put your flights and hotels on the card and travel under three months, and it does the job; fly on points or stay longer, and read the activation and duration clauses first.
- Unlimited overseas emergency medical with no dollar cap on hospital or treatment, $300 excess per claim
- Cancellation with no dollar cap on prepaid non-refundable travel, subject to a $300 excess

- Interstate flight inconvenience cover built in: cancellation to $3,000 and flight delay from four hours
- Personal liability overseas up to $2,500,000 with no excess
- Activation by spend: no cover unless at least $500 of prepaid travel is charged to the card and you hold a return ticket
- Easy to miss on a Qantas points booking, where only carrier charges may hit the card and the $500 is not met
- Overseas cover runs three consecutive months per trip on this Platinum tier, against six on Signature
- A $300 excess applies to most travel claims, including medical, cancellation and luggage
- Cover ends at 81, and pre-existing conditions need the auto-covered list or a $45 assessment
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What cardholders say about the St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum
Real experiences on travel cover, claims and activation 39 reviews
Felix (ProductReview)
Covers more than a budget card
As a high fee credit card, the international travel insurance covers more than other budget credit cards.
Vik (ProductReview)
Charged the $300 cancellation excess
I booked business class trip. As I am not able to make it, I was charged $300 cancelation fee.
Jac (ProductReview)
Claim knocked back as not interstate
Have paid the higher premium on this card for multiple years for the added benefit of travel insurance, and have booked trips on the card accordingly. My one and only insurance claim was recently rejected with the smug explanation that my cancelled flight wasn't 'interstate'.

How to make an Amplify Qantas Platinum insurance claim
Step 1: Call the 24/7 assistance line before treatment where possible
For a medical emergency overseas, call Allianz Global Assistance on +61 7 3305 7468 before treatment where you can. They coordinate hospitals and evacuation, and give you a reference number the claims team looks for later.
Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents
Lodge online at insurance.agaassistance.com.au/stgeorge or call 1800 091 710. Keep itemised accounts, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and your card statement showing the trip was charged to the card.
Step 3: Prove the $500 of prepaid travel hit the card
The first thing the insurer checks is whether at least $500 of prepaid travel was charged to the card. Send that proof with your claim, and expect roughly four to eight weeks for a decision.
What people ask about the St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum
- There is no button to press, but the cover is not automatic either. It switches on only when you charge at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs to your St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum and hold a return overseas travel ticket, before you leave Australia. You also need to be aged under 81, and your journey has to begin and end in Australia. Activation (charging the required trip cost to the card so the cover switches on) is the single most common reason a claim is knocked back. If you book a Qantas reward seat and only the carrier charges land on the card, that may not meet the $500 spend, so read the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) before you rely on it.
- Cover extends to the cardholder, their spouse or de facto partner, and dependants, as long as each person meets the eligibility rules. Every traveller needs at least $500 of their own prepaid travel charged to the card account, a return overseas travel ticket, and to be aged under 81. A spouse or dependant has to travel with the cardholder for at least half of the cardholder's trip. Dependants under two years are covered when travelling with the cardholder. When you all travel together, only one person can claim the cardholder's benefit amounts, so check the sums insured that apply to each traveller in your PDS (Product Disclosure Statement).
- It reimburses the excess (the amount the hire company makes you pay towards damage or theft), up to $5,500. It does not waive the damage, so the hire company still charges you the excess and you claim it back afterwards. The St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum covers this both overseas, inside the international travel policy, and in Australia through a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit, each up to $5,500 with a $300 excess per claim. To qualify, charge the full rental to the card and be a named driver on the agreement. Tyres, windscreens and administrative fees are not part of the covered excess.
- Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind the policy, online at insurance.agaassistance.com.au/stgeorge or on 1800 091 710. For a medical emergency overseas, call the 24-hour line on +61 7 3305 7468 before treatment where you can. Lodge within the timeframe your PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) sets, and keep the documents that prove the loss: itemised accounts for medical or delay costs, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and your card statement showing the trip was charged to the card. Some cardholders report clean approvals in a few weeks, while others describe repeated document requests, so lodge early and keep everything dated.
- The biggest gap is activation: if you did not charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card, there is no cover at all, and that catches people who book on Qantas points. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless they are on the auto-covered list or you have them assessed for a $45 fee. Overseas cover stops after three consecutive months per trip on this Platinum tier, and there is no cover once you turn 81. Off-piste skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, though on-piste skiing is covered. There is also no mobile phone insurance, no refund cover, no price protection, and no domestic medical cover, since Medicare applies within Australia.
- Yes, through a separate Interstate Flight Inconvenience benefit that applies to return flights between Australian states charged in full to the card. It covers cancellation up to $3,000, flight delay from four hours at $125 per person, luggage up to $1,500 and luggage delay, but not overseas-style medical cover, because Medicare applies within Australia. Cover runs for up to 14 days from the start of the trip. A $300 excess applies to the cancellation and luggage claims. Treat it as genuine protection for interstate air travel, not a full domestic travel policy, since there is no domestic additional-expenses cover.
- Yes. On top of the overseas rental excess in the travel policy, the St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum includes a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit. It reimburses the excess you are liable for after an Australian hire car is damaged or stolen, up to the lesser of the excess in your agreement or $5,500, with a $300 excess per claim. Charge the whole rental to the card and be a named driver on the agreement. This is a real advantage, because plenty of cards reimburse overseas hires only and leave a domestic road trip exposed.
- No. The St.George Amplify Qantas Platinum does not include mobile phone or screen insurance, so a cracked, lost or stolen phone is replaced out of pocket. Purchase protection can cover a newly bought phone against theft, loss or accidental damage for four months from purchase, up to $10,000 with a $300 excess, but that is not the same as ongoing phone cover. Replacing a flagship smartphone yourself usually costs $1,200 to $2,300. If phone cover matters to you, a standalone mobile or gadget policy is the way to fill this gap.
- On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, because they are not named in the excluded activities. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, so a claim from skiing outside the marked runs would be declined. Your ski equipment is not separately insured while it is in use, so treat expensive gear as uncovered on the slopes. There is no paid snow upgrade on this card, so if you plan off-piste or backcountry runs, a dedicated snow travel policy is the safer option.
- Some are. The policy automatically covers a listed set of stable pre-existing conditions if you meet the stated requirements, such as no recent treatment. Anything outside that list is excluded unless you apply for assessment online at checkyourcover.com.au/stgeorge or by phone, and pay a $45 administration fee if cover is confirmed. Do this before you travel, because an unassessed condition means a related overseas medical claim can be denied, and those bills run into the tens of thousands. Answer the assessment questions honestly and in full, or any confirmation of cover can be treated as invalid.
