Virgin Money Velocity Flyer travel insurance: what cover do you actually get?

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Virgin Money Velocity Flyer
No overseas medical, no cancellation, no luggage, no delay. The Virgin Money Velocity Flyer travel insurance a lot of people assume they hold is simply not attached to this card. You're in a hospital in Bali and the front desk asks who is paying: that bill is yours. Most cardholders assume the Velocity branding carries the same cover across the whole range, and it doesn't, because the Product Disclosure Statement (the official policy booklet) lists this card under Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty only. Medicare covers nothing outside Australia, not a dollar, and a serious hospital admission overseas runs $50,000 to $200,000. A standalone policy covers that same night in Bali from a few dollars a day, with no spend threshold to switch it on first. If this card stays home for domestic spending and points, the gap costs you nothing; if you fly overseas, you are uninsured until you buy cover yourself.
- Nothing to activate: there is no prepaid-travel spend threshold to meet, because no travel policy is attached to this card
- The PDS card-type table states the position plainly, so there is no ambiguity about which tier holds the travel cover
- No age limit or per-trip duration cap to fall foul of, since there is no travel cover to age out of
- No overseas emergency medical: hospital, treatment and evacuation costs are entirely yours, and Medicare does not apply outside Australia
- No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are unrecoverable through this card if you have to cancel
- No luggage, delay or missed-connection cover: every disruption expense on an overseas trip is out of pocket
- No personal liability cover overseas: a third-party injury or property damage claim is uninsured
- No domestic interstate cover: the Domestic Travel Insurance benefits sit on the High Flyer tier, not this one
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What cardholders say about the Virgin Money Velocity Flyer
Real experiences on the missing travel cover and the annual fee 94 reviews
Tim_Sydney (ProductReview)
One of the highest Visa earn rates
I have been a customer of Virgin Money now for around 8 years. I find them easy to deal with whenever I need to call through to the call centres and the earn rate is much higher than any of the banks.
Cisco (ProductReview)
Upgraded to the High Flyer for the cover
The not so good: Only 0.66 points per dollar spent on most goods and services. No complementary travel insurance and lounge access. $129 annual fee I have had this card for more than 7 years but upgraded to the more rewarding High Flyer card.
Jack H. (ProductReview)
Limited insurances offered with the card
However the card has a capped earn rate for the top rate, then reduces for subsequent spends, which is not great. Limited insurances offered with the card as well.

How to make a Velocity Flyer claim
Step 1: Check the cover applies before you contact anyone
Read Part D of the relevant section in the Policy Information Booklet to confirm the loss is covered. This card carries Purchase Protection Insurance and Extended Warranty Insurance only, so a travel, medical or rental excess claim has no cover to draw on. Do not contact Virgin Money or NAB about a claim: the booklet directs all claims to Allianz Global Assistance.
Step 2: Contact Allianz Global Assistance and get approval first
Call 1800 072 791 within Australia, with claims answered Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm AEST, or email cardclaims@allianz-assistance.com.au. Claim forms are available at checkyourcover/vma. For an Extended Warranty claim you must obtain approval before starting any repair or replacement, otherwise the payout can be reduced. For theft, report it to the police as soon as reasonably practical and keep the confirmation.
Step 3: Submit proof the whole purchase price went on the card
Send the receipt or invoice showing the full purchase price was charged to the accountholder's card account, plus proof of ownership and value such as a valuation for jewellery. Allianz Global Assistance considers a claim within 10 business days of receiving a completed form and all requested documentation, and writes to you within 10 business days if more is needed. Expect depreciation to be deducted by the age of the item before settlement.
What people ask about the Virgin Money Velocity Flyer
- There is nothing to activate, because the Velocity Flyer does not include complimentary travel insurance. The Virgin Money Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet, effective 15 May 2026, lists this card against Purchase Protection Insurance and Extended Warranty Insurance only. International Travel Insurance, Domestic Travel Insurance and Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance in Australia are limited to the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card, which switches on after at least $500 of prepaid travel is charged to the card account and the traveller holds a return overseas ticket. Charging your flights to the Velocity Flyer will not trigger any travel cover, no matter how much you spend. For overseas trips, arrange a standalone travel insurance policy before you leave.
- Cover extends to the accountholder and cardholders for purchase-related claims only. Under Purchase Protection Insurance and Extended Warranty Insurance the whole purchase price of the item must have been charged to the accountholder's card account, and Purchase Protection also covers an item you bought as a gift for any permanent Australian resident. There is no spouse or dependant cover on this card, because it carries no travel policy: the booklet's spouse and dependant eligibility rules attach to the High Flyer tier's International and Domestic Travel Insurance. Additional cardholders on the account count as cardholders for these purchase covers. If you need family travel cover, it has to come from a separate policy.
- It does not, because the Velocity Flyer has no rental vehicle excess cover. Rental excess cover reimburses the excess, the amount a hire company makes you pay towards damage or theft, rather than repairing the vehicle, and this card offers neither overseas nor Australian excess cover. The booklet places Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance in Australia on the Velocity High Flyer Card only, where it pays the amount specified in the rental agreement up to $10,000 for the rental period with a $100 excess per claim. On the Velocity Flyer, a damaged hire car leaves the full agreement excess with you, commonly $2,000 to $5,500. Either accept the hire company's excess-reduction product at the counter or buy a standalone rental excess policy.
- Claims go to Allianz Global Assistance, which administers the Group Policy for NAB, and the booklet is explicit that you should not contact Virgin Money or NAB. Call 1800 072 791 within Australia, with claims answered Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm AEST, or email cardclaims@allianz-assistance.com.au. Claim forms are available at checkyourcover/vma. Allianz Global Assistance considers a claim within 10 business days of receiving a completed claim form and all requested documentation, and writes to you within 10 business days if it needs more. For a Purchase Protection claim keep the receipt proving the whole purchase price went on the card, plus a police report for theft. For Extended Warranty, get approval before starting any repair.
- The largest gap is travel. There is no overseas emergency medical cover, no evacuation, no trip cancellation, no luggage or delay cover and no domestic interstate cover, plus no rental vehicle excess cover and no roadside assistance. Within the two covers you do have, Purchase Protection excludes items left behind in a hotel or motel room after checkout, items left in a motor vehicle, valuables checked into an aircraft cargo hold, sporting equipment damaged during use and electrical or mechanical breakdown. Extended Warranty pays nothing if the manufacturer's warranty already exceeds five years. Depreciation is deducted from Purchase Protection settlements by the age of the item, up to a maximum deduction of 80%.
- It is not enough on its own, and you need a separate travel policy. The Velocity Flyer carries no international or domestic travel insurance, so an overseas medical bill, a cancelled trip or delayed luggage sits entirely with you. Medicare does not cover treatment outside Australia, a serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000, and an air ambulance home from Southeast Asia adds $60,000 to $100,000. Standalone travel insurance covers those scenarios with no spend threshold to activate and no dependence on which card paid for the trip. Buy the policy when you book rather than at the airport, so cancellation cover applies to money you have already committed.
- There is no standalone mobile phone insurance on the Velocity Flyer. The booklet contains five covers in total and a dedicated phone or screen benefit is not one of them. A new handset does qualify as a covered item under Purchase Protection Insurance, so theft, accidental damage or permanent loss is covered for 90 consecutive days from the date you take possession, provided the whole purchase price went on the card account. After that 90-day window closes, a cracked screen or stolen phone is entirely at your cost, and a flagship screen repair runs $200 to $600. Depreciation of 20% a year also applies to phones claimed within the window.
- No, because the Velocity Flyer has no travel insurance of any kind, so there is nothing to extend to snow sports. On-piste skiing, meaning skiing on marked open runs, and off-piste skiing are equally uncovered here, along with medical treatment, evacuation off a mountain and damage to your gear. That matters most on an overseas ski trip, where a helicopter evacuation and surgery can reach six figures and Medicare does not apply. For a domestic snow trip Medicare covers your treatment in Australia, but transport off the mountain and unused lift passes are still yours. A standalone travel policy with a snow-sports section is the only route to cover, and most still exclude off-piste.
- Yes. Purchase Protection Insurance covers a covered item that is stolen, accidentally damaged or permanently lost for 90 consecutive days after you take possession, as long as the whole purchase price was charged to the accountholder's card account. It pays the purchase price you charged, with jewellery, watches and new works of art capped at $5,000 per claim, and a maximum of $200,000 for all claims in any 12 consecutive months per card account. No excess applies. Depreciation is then deducted by age, at 20% a year for phones, computers and electronics and 15% a year for clothing and luggage, capped at an 80% deduction. Items left in a motor vehicle are excluded.
- Yes. Extended Warranty Insurance begins when the manufacturer's Australian warranty expires and runs for the same length as that original warranty, up to a maximum of one full year. A 6-month warranty gains 6 months, and any warranty from 1 to 5 years gains 12 months. There is no cover at all if the manufacturer's warranty exceeds five years. It pays the lowest of the original purchase price, the repair cost or the replacement cost, limited to $10,000 per covered item and $40,000 per card account in any 12 months, with no excess. The item needs a manufacturer's unique serial number, and you must get approval before starting a repair.
