Our take on travel insurance for the Westpac Altitude Velocity Black

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Unlimited medical. Activation catch. Here is what that means for an Altitude Velocity Black cardholder. Charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card, hold a return ticket, and the overseas cover is genuinely strong: unlimited emergency medical with a $300 excess, unlimited cancellation, and evacuation with no dollar cap. The westpac altitude velocity black travel insurance only switches on once that spend hits the card, though. Most cardholders assume holding the card is enough. It isn't. Book the flights on points so only taxes touch the card, and you can travel completely uninsured. Cover also stops at 6 months per trip and at age 81. If you always charge your travel to the card and keep trips under half a year, the overseas cover does real work; if you book on points or travel longer, read the activation clause first.

What works on travel
  • Unlimited overseas emergency medical and evacuation, $300 excess per claim
  • Unlimited trip cancellation on all prepaid non-refundable travel
  • Spouse and dependent children under 25 covered when travelling with you
  • Interstate cover included: cancellation to $3,000, flight delay from 4 hours
  • On-piste skiing and snowboarding covered by omission
Where travel breaks down
  • Activation by spend: no cover unless $500 of prepaid travel is charged to the card and you hold a return ticket
  • No cover once you are 81 or over
  • Overseas trips capped at 6 months, so long or one-way travel falls outside
  • No domestic medical or general domestic additional-expenses benefit
  • $300 excess on most major claims, including medical and cancellation

How to make an Altitude Velocity Black claim

1

Step 1: Call Allianz Global Assistance before treatment where possible

For an overseas medical emergency, call +61 7 3305 7468 (reverse charge accepted) before treatment so the insurer can guide and, where needed, guarantee costs. Save the reference number they give you.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents

Lodge online at claimmanager.com.au/westpac or call 1800 091 710. Gather itemised accounts, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and the rental agreement and repair invoice for a car claim.

3

Step 3: Prove the trip was charged to the card

Include the card statement showing at least $500 of prepaid travel, or the full rental, was charged to the card. Allianz assesses within 10 business days of a complete claim, so lodge early and keep everything dated.

FAQ

What people ask about the Westpac Altitude Velocity Black

  • The overseas cover switches on when you charge at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs to the Altitude Velocity Black and hold a return overseas ticket before you leave Australia. There is no separate registration step, but holding the card is not enough on its own. You also need to be under 81, and the trip must begin and end in Australia. Each traveller you want covered, including a spouse or child, needs their own $500 of prepaid travel on the card. If you book with points and only the taxes hit the card, that may not meet the $500 condition, so check before you rely on it.
  • Cover extends to you, your spouse or de facto partner, and your dependent children under 25 who are not in full-time work, as long as they travel with you for at least half of your trip. Each traveller needs at least $500 of their own prepaid travel charged to the card, a return ticket, and to be under 81. Dependants under 2 are covered on the same travelling-together basis. Where you all travel together, only one person can claim the cardholder-level benefits, and the others claim as spouse or dependant. Check the sums insured per person in your PDS, since limits differ by benefit.
  • It reimburses the excess (the amount the hire company makes you pay towards damage or theft) up to $5,500, with a $300 excess per claim. It does not waive the damage, so you pay the hire company first and claim it back afterwards. The Altitude Velocity Black covers this both overseas, within the travel policy, and in Australia through a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit. For the Australian cover, the full rental cost must be charged to the card. Keep the rental agreement showing the excess and the repair invoice, because Allianz asks for both when you lodge the claim.
  • Claims are handled by Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind the Westpac policy. Lodge online at claimmanager.com.au/westpac or call 1800 091 710, and give notice as soon as you can. For an overseas medical emergency, call the 24-hour line on +61 7 3305 7468 first. You will need itemised accounts rather than payment summaries, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and your card statement proving the trip was charged. Allianz aims to assess a complete claim within 10 business days. Some cardholders report clean approvals, others describe follow-up document requests, so lodge early and keep everything dated.
  • The biggest gap is activation: if you did not charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card, there is no overseas cover at all. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless they are on the auto-covered list or you have them assessed for a $45 fee, and cover stops once a trip runs past 6 months or you turn 81. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, along with scuba diving without certification and other listed activities. There is no overseas-style medical cover for domestic trips, since Medicare applies within Australia, and no mobile phone insurance.
  • Yes, through a separate Interstate Flight Inconvenience benefit that applies when you charge the full return interstate airfare to the card. It covers domestic flight cancellation up to $3,000, flight delay from 4 hours ($125 per person, to $500), and domestic luggage and luggage delay. It does not include overseas-style medical cover, because Medicare applies within Australia, and there is no general domestic additional-expenses benefit beyond a $5,000 funeral allowance. Cover runs for up to 14 days from the start of the interstate trip. It is genuine protection for interstate air travel, not a full domestic travel policy.
  • On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, because they are not named in the dangerous-activities exclusion. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding, snowmobiling and tobogganing are excluded, so a claim from skiing outside the marked runs would be declined. Your ski equipment is not separately insured while in use, so treat expensive gear as uncovered on the slopes. If you plan any off-piste or backcountry runs, a dedicated snow travel policy is the safer option. The cover also still depends on activating the policy by charging your trip to the card.
  • No. The Altitude Velocity Black does not include mobile phone insurance, so a cracked screen or a stolen handset is not covered as a standalone benefit. A phone can be covered as luggage while you travel, or under purchase protection for 4 months if you bought it on the card, but both apply depreciation and a $300 excess. For everyday phone damage at home, that leaves a gap, and a flagship screen repair runs about $200 to $600 out of pocket. If phone cover matters to you, a standalone device policy or your home contents insurance is the better fit.
