Our take on travel insurance for the Bank of China Travel Card
Charge a flight to the Bank of China Travel Card and you earn rewards points and can call a concierge, but you do not get travel insurance. Bank of China's own BOC Travel Card page lists four benefits, being no annual fee for two years, double rewards on overseas spend, a 24-hour concierge line and wide UnionPay acceptance in China, and complimentary travel insurance is not among them. This is a UnionPay rewards card built for spending in China, not an accident or medical certificate. That gap matters because MediShield Life, Singapore's national health scheme, does not pay for treatment outside Singapore, and a serious hospital admission in the US or Europe can run past S$100,000. There is no personal accident, no overseas medical, no trip cancellation and no baggage cover attached to this card, so a travel mishap is paid from your own pocket. For real protection, a standalone Singapore travel policy that states its medical, cancellation and baggage limits in writing is the safer choice, and it usually costs only a few dollars a day. Buy that policy separately and treat the card as a rewards tool, not as cover.
- No annual fee for the first two years, after which the fee is S$205.20 a year (base S$190 plus GST)
- 24-hour worldwide concierge line for flights, hotels and emergency help on +65 6336 4506
- Double BOC Rewards points on all overseas spend and wide UnionPay acceptance across China
- No complimentary travel insurance at all: no personal accident, no overseas medical and no emergency evacuation cover
- No trip cancellation, baggage or travel delay benefit, so disruptions are paid out of pocket
- MediShield Life does not cover overseas treatment, and this card adds nothing towards an overseas hospital bill
- Not free for life: the annual fee returns after two years, and UnionPay is less widely accepted than Visa or Mastercard outside China
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

Keep it while there is no fee
If theres no annual fees charged yet, you can just hold on to it. Never know when you will use it.

Barely using it, thinking of cancelling
Since I am not going to be able to travel for the next few months (or maybe even a year), would you suggest cancelling the BOC Travelcard? I haven't used it for a few months now as I am used to using my AMEX Rewards card locally. Which would you suggest I use for spending locally?

Ask for a fee waiver or cancel
Can put forward a request for fee waiver, if they dont allow, then cancel the card and reapply when needed again.
How to contact Bank of China Travel Card assistance?
Bank of China does not attach a travel insurance policy, underwriter or claims hotline to this card. The 24-hour worldwide concierge line on +65 6336 4506 can help arrange flights, hotels and emergency services, but it does not pay any insurance benefit.
What to do if you need travel cover with the Bank of China Travel Card
Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy before you fly
Because the card includes no travel insurance, arrange a standalone Singapore travel policy that states its overseas medical, cancellation and baggage limits in writing. Cover starts from around S$20 for a single trip.
Step 2: Keep your policy and emergency number with you
Save your travel insurer's 24-hour emergency assistance number and policy number on your phone, and keep receipts, medical reports and any police or airline reports to support a claim.
Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC for a card-issuer dispute
For a dispute with the card issuer itself, not travel insurance, you can approach FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, free of charge within 6 months of the issuer's final reply.
What people ask about the Bank of China Travel Card
- No. Bank of China's BOC Travel Card page lists four benefits, being no annual fee for two years, double rewards on overseas spend, a 24-hour concierge line and wide UnionPay acceptance in China, and travel insurance is not one of them. This is a UnionPay rewards card, not an accident or medical certificate. Some other Singapore cards bundle complimentary cover that switches on when you charge the air fare to the card, but this card does not, so holding it gives you no personal accident, overseas medical, cancellation or baggage protection. If you need travel cover, you have to buy a standalone policy.
- There is nothing to activate, because the card carries no complimentary travel insurance. On many Singapore cards the cover only switches on when you charge the full air fare to the card, but here charging the fare earns you rewards points, not insurance. Do not assume that paying for your flight with this card protects your trip. To be covered, buy a separate travel insurance policy before you fly and keep its certificate with your travel documents.
- No. The card has no overseas medical benefit, so a hospital bill abroad is entirely your own cost. This matters because MediShield Life, Singapore's national health insurance, does not pay for treatment outside Singapore, and a serious admission in the US or Europe can run past S$100,000. Emergency evacuation, such as an air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore, can add S$50,000 to S$120,000, and the card does not cover that either. A standalone travel policy with a clear medical and evacuation limit is the way to cover these costs.
- No. Since the card provides no travel medical cover of any kind, it does not cover COVID-19 treatment, quarantine or a COVID-related cancellation overseas. There is no policy wording to check, because there is no complimentary insurance attached to the card. If COVID-19 cover matters to you, take a standalone Singapore travel policy that states plainly how it handles COVID-19 medical and cancellation costs, since these terms vary between insurers.
- No. Personal accident cover, a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent disablement while travelling, is a common headline on Singapore travel cards, but the BOC Travel Card does not carry it. Even Bank of China's own Visa Infinite headlines a S$1,000,000 personal accident sum, while this lower-tier UnionPay card publishes none. If a personal accident benefit matters to you, it is included in most standalone travel policies, or you would need a card that specifically offers it.
- You cannot, because there is no complimentary travel insurance and therefore no underwriter, claims hotline or policy to claim against. The card's 24-hour concierge line on +65 6336 4506 can help arrange flights, hotels or emergency assistance, but it does not pay medical, cancellation or baggage costs. Any claim would go to a standalone travel insurer you bought a policy from. If that insurer denies a fair claim, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, which handles disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.
- Yes. The BOC Travel Card gives you rewards and concierge help but no insurance, so on its own it leaves you fully exposed to overseas medical bills, trip cancellation and lost baggage. A single hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover outside Singapore, can run past S$100,000. A standalone Singapore travel insurance policy fills all of these gaps from around a few dollars a day for a single trip and states its medical, cancellation and baggage limits in writing. Treat the card as a spending tool and buy travel insurance separately.
