Our take on travel insurance for the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Clubcard points, yes. Travel insurance, no. That is the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card in one line. So, you book a week in Antalya on the card and collect Clubcard points on the spend, then a stomach bug turns into two nights in a private hospital: the bill is yours, because no medical, cancellation or baggage cover sits behind the card. The NHS pays nothing abroad, and the GHIC (the UK Global Health Insurance Card) only opens state healthcare in the EU and a few other countries, with no repatriation. Most cardholders assume a supermarket credit card brings some holiday cover. It doesn't, and every purchase abroad also costs a 2.75% foreign currency fee. What the card does give you is Section 75 protection on bookings between £100 and £30,000 if the travel company goes bust, which is a legal right, not insurance. For the trip itself, buy a standalone travel policy the day you book.

What works on travel
  • No annual fee on the Clubcard Credit Card
  • Clubcard points on your spending, in Tesco and elsewhere
  • Section 75: Tesco Bank is jointly liable for purchases from £100 to £30,000, including holidays
  • No fee for going over your credit limit
  • Block and unblock the card in the Tesco Bank app
Where travel breaks down
  • No travel insurance: no emergency medical, cancellation or baggage cover
  • 2.75% fee on every transaction in a foreign currency
  • Cash withdrawals cost a 3.99% handling fee, minimum £3, plus interest
  • The lost or stolen line from abroad is staffed only 8am to 9pm on weekdays and 8am to 6pm at weekends
  • Late payment fee of £12

What does Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card Travel Insurance actually cover?

No trip cancellation. This benefit is not included with this card. Prepaid flights, hotels and package holidays are not reimbursable if illness or a family emergency forces you to cancel.

What's not covered
  • No insurance policy is attached to the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

No emergency medical cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Treatment abroad is your own bill: the NHS pays nothing overseas, the GHIC (the UK Global Health Insurance Card) only gives access to state healthcare in the EU and a few other countries, so a private hospital bill in Antalya or the US is yours to pay.

What's not covered
  • No insurance policy is attached to the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

No repatriation or medical assistance. This benefit is not included with this card. Flying home on a stretcher or with a medical escort is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • No insurance policy is attached to the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

No emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency dental pain relief abroad is paid by you, and the GHIC only helps at state dentists in the countries where it is accepted.

What's not covered
  • No insurance policy is attached to the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

What's not covered
  • No insurance policy is attached to the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

No travel delay cover. This benefit is not included with this card. A long flight delay out of Málaga pays nothing back beyond what the airline owes you under UK261 rules, and meals or a hotel night while you wait are yours to cover if the airline does not.

What's not covered
  • No insurance policy is attached to the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

No missed departure cover. This benefit is not included with this card. If a motorway accident or a cancelled train makes you miss your flight, the cost of new tickets to catch up with the trip is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • No insurance policy is attached to the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

No early return cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Flying home after a close relative falls seriously ill or dies is paid by you, and a last-minute one-way flight is rarely cheap.

No delayed baggage cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Clothes and toiletries bought while your suitcase is stuck at another airport are out of pocket, beyond what the airline agrees to repay.

What's not covered

No UK trip disruption cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Extra accommodation and travel costs when a UK trip goes wrong, such as a storm cancelling the ferry back from the Isle of Wight, are out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • No insurance policy is attached to the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

No UK luggage cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Belongings lost or stolen on a trip within the UK are not reimbursed, unless your home contents policy covers them away from home.

A large refund stopped the direct debit

I had an issue with my tesco card where I received a refund after the statement date for more than the statement balance, which meant they automatically didn't collect payment from my accountt. But then they said I'd failed to make a payment myself.

Their banking app does not do direct provisioning of cards to digital wallets. You need the card, or at the very least the card details.

How to contact Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card assistance?

No insurer, policy wording or emergency medical line sits behind this card. The numbers below are Tesco Bank's lines for a lost or stolen card or suspected fraud. For medical, cancellation and baggage cover abroad, buy a standalone travel policy and save its 24-hour emergency number in your phone.

Tesco Bank credit cards (in the UK)

0345 300 4278

May be included in your phone operator's inclusive call minutes · Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am to 6pm

Tesco Bank from overseas (lost or stolen card, suspected fraud)

+44 1268 50 80 27

Cost of calling the UK from abroad varies by network · Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am to 6pm (UK time); you can block the card any time in the app

What to do if something goes wrong abroad with a Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

1

Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy when you book

The Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card includes no travel insurance, so arrange a standalone policy whose policy wording (the insurer's full policy document) sets out its emergency medical, cancellation and baggage limits. Cancellation cover only runs from the day the policy starts, so buy it when you pay the deposit rather than the week you fly, and save the insurer's 24-hour emergency number in your phone.

2

Step 2: Card lost or stolen abroad? Block it in the app, then call Tesco Bank

Block the card in the Tesco Bank app or Online Banking, which does not close the account. Then call +44 1268 50 80 27 from overseas, Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm and 8am to 6pm at weekends (UK time), or 0345 300 4278 in the UK. Reporting it lost or stolen cancels the card and a replacement is sent.

3

Step 3: Use Section 75 for a failed booking, then the Financial Ombudsman Service

If a holiday or purchase between £100 and £30,000 paid on the card is not delivered or is faulty, claim from the seller and from Tesco Bank under Section 75. If Tesco Bank does not resolve a complaint, it has up to 8 weeks to send its final response. You can then take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service for free, within 6 months of that response, on 0800 023 4567.

FAQ

What people ask about the Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card

  • You can't, because there is none to activate. The Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card comes with no travel insurance, and paying for flights, a hotel or a package holiday with it switches on no cover. There is no registration step to look for. What paying on the card does give you is Section 75 protection, a legal right to claim from Tesco Bank if a booking between £100 and £30,000 is not delivered, which is not insurance. If you want the trip covered, buy a standalone travel policy when you book.
  • Nobody, since the card carries no insurance. That goes for the cardholder, an additional cardholder, a partner and any children travelling with you, whoever paid for the bookings. Every traveller in your group needs to be named on a travel policy of their own. A family policy can insure two adults and their children for one premium, so check its age limit for children, its emergency medical limit and how it treats pre-existing medical conditions before you pay.
  • No. The Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card has no car hire excess cover, abroad or in the UK, and no breakdown cover. The excess is the amount the hire company charges you after damage to or theft of the car. As a credit card, it does work for the deposit most rental desks ask for, but a charge in euros carries the 2.75% foreign currency fee. The desk's own excess waiver or a standalone car hire excess policy bought before you travel closes the gap.
  • There is no insurance claim to make: the card includes no travel, purchase or phone insurance. If something goes wrong on a trip, you claim from the standalone travel insurer you bought a policy from, with itemised medical bills, a police report or the airline's Property Irregularity Report. If a booking paid on the card is not delivered, you can claim from Tesco Bank under Section 75 for amounts between £100 and £30,000. If Tesco Bank does not resolve a complaint within 8 weeks, the Financial Ombudsman Service reviews it for free, within 6 months of the final response.
  • The Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card carries no travel insurance, so there is no emergency medical, cancellation or baggage cover, and no mobile phone insurance. In practice that means no hospital bills or repatriation abroad, where the NHS pays nothing and the GHIC only gives access to state healthcare in some countries. There is no trip cancellation, delay or lost luggage cover, no car hire excess, no winter sports cover, no personal liability, no purchase protection and no extended warranty. Section 75 still protects purchases from £100 to £30,000, but it is a legal right, not insurance.
  • There is no annual fee, but every transaction in a foreign currency costs 2.75% on top, so a £1,000 hotel bill in euros costs about £28 extra. Taking cash is dearer: a 3.99% handling fee, with a minimum of £3, plus interest on the amount withdrawn. When a card machine abroad offers to charge you in pounds, choose the local currency instead, because the merchant's conversion is usually worse. If you travel often, a card with no foreign transaction fee keeps those costs down.
  • No, because the card has no medical cover of any kind. If you have a medical condition, look for a standalone travel policy and declare every condition before you travel, and again if your health changes before the trip. Some insurers cover declared conditions for an extra premium; others exclude them. If an insurer declines a condition, excludes it or charges a significant medical premium, it must point you to the MoneyHelper travel insurance directory, the government-backed list of specialist insurers for people with medical conditions.
  • No. The card has no winter sports cover: no ski injury medical costs, no piste rescue, no cover for your own or hired equipment and no refund of an unused lift pass. There is no add-on to buy either, because there is no policy to extend. A fracture treated in a private resort clinic in the Alps is yours to pay, and the GHIC does not pay for mountain rescue. Buy a travel policy with winter sports cover before you leave.
  • Yes. Section 75 helps if a travel company fails to deliver what you paid for, but it pays nothing if you fall ill, have to cancel or lose your bags. A hospital bill abroad or a flight home on a stretcher is yours to pay, and the NHS pays nothing overseas. A standalone travel policy covers emergency medical treatment, cancellation and baggage, whichever card paid for the trip. Buy it when you book rather than the week you fly, because cancellation cover only starts on the policy's start date.
