Amex Gold Card travel insurance: what does the card actually cover?

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the American Express Gold Card
No travel insurance. None. That is the honest answer to the Amex Gold Card travel insurance question, and it catches people out. Most cardholders assume any gold-tier Amex quietly insures their trips. This one does not, because the policy on this card covers retail purchases only: no overseas emergency medical, no cancellation, no luggage cover. Picture a hospital admission in Bali running $50,000 to $200,000, with Medicare paying nothing outside Australia and this card paying nothing either. A standalone travel policy covers that same overseas trip from around $50. If you travel at all, treat this as a shopping-protection card and buy separate travel insurance before you fly.
- Retail cover is unaffected: purchase, refund and warranty benefits still apply to items bought on the card
- Honest, simple scope: the policy states plainly it is retail-only, so there is no travel fine print to misread
- No activation clause to trip over: there is no travel cover to forget to switch on
- No overseas emergency medical: a serious hospital admission abroad, commonly $50,000 to $200,000, is entirely yours
- No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not reimbursed if you cancel
- No luggage, delay or evacuation cover: lost bags, long delays and an air ambulance home are all out of pocket
- No domestic or interstate travel cover: nothing applies to trips within Australia either

the dispute resolution process is a joke. If you have an issue with a payment just write it off because Amex aren't interested.

How to make an Amex Gold Card claim
Step 1: Notify Chubb within 30 days of the event
Tell Chubb as soon as possible, and within 30 days of the theft, damage or product failure. Lodge online at americanexpress.com/australia/claims, or call 1800 236 023 in Australia (or +61 2 9335 3492 from overseas) for a claim form. For theft or criminal damage, report it to the police and get a written report where you can.
Step 2: Gather your proof and receipts
Keep the itemised sales receipt, your American Express statement showing the item was charged to the card, and photos of the damage. For a Buyer's Advantage claim, add the original manufacturer warranty and a repair estimate. For Card Refund Cover, keep the unused item, as Chubb can ask to inspect it.
Step 3: Submit the claim and wait for assessment
Submit the completed form and documents online for faster handling. Chubb settles the claim within 10 business days of receiving all the evidence it needs, and pays any approved amount within 5 business days. The $50 Card Purchase excess is deducted before payment.
What people ask about the American Express Gold Card
- No. The Amex Gold Card has no complimentary travel insurance at all. Its insurance policy covers retail purchases only: Card Purchase Cover, Card Refund Cover and Buyer's Advantage extended warranty. That means no overseas emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no luggage cover and no rental excess. This surprises a lot of cardholders, because higher American Express cards like the Platinum and Explorer do include travel cover. If you are travelling, do not rely on this card as a safety net. A standalone travel insurance policy is the only way to cover medical costs abroad, cancellation and lost baggage, and it usually starts from around $50 for a short overseas trip.
- The Amex Gold Card covers retail purchases through three benefits from Chubb. Card Purchase Cover reimburses theft or accidental damage to new items charged to the card for 90 days, up to $2,500 an item ($10,000 a year), with a $50 excess. Buyer's Advantage extends the manufacturer's Australian warranty by up to a year, to $7,000 an item, once the original warranty ends. Card Refund Cover repays up to $500 on an unused item a retailer refuses to take back within 90 days. There is no travel, medical or rental cover of any kind on this card.
- Cover extends to the Card Member, an Additional Card Member, and their Spouse or Dependent Children, provided the eligible item was bought in full on the American Express Card Account and the buyer is a Resident of Australia. A Dependent Child means a child 25 or younger, or any age if permanently dependent. Because this is retail cover rather than travel cover, there is no need for anyone to be travelling together or holding a ticket. The card simply needs to be current, not cancelled or suspended, at the time of the claim.
- No. The Amex Gold Card does not include any rental vehicle excess cover, overseas or in Australia. If your hire car is damaged or stolen, the full excess is yours, and that commonly runs from $2,000 to $8,000 depending on the vehicle and the hire company. This is a key gap, because some higher American Express cards do reimburse rental excess. To protect yourself, either take the hire company's excess-reduction cover at the counter or buy a standalone rental excess policy, which covers Australian and overseas hires from a few dollars a day. Charging the rental to this card does not add any excess protection.
- Card Purchase Cover reimburses you if a new item bought on the card is stolen or accidentally damaged within 90 days of purchase. The most it pays is $2,500 per item and $10,000 in any 12-month period, and a $50 excess is deducted from each claim. You need the itemised receipt and your statement showing the item was charged to the card, and theft has to be reported to police. Some items are excluded, including anything left unattended in public, and jewellery unless it was carried by hand. Lodge the claim with Chubb within 30 days at americanexpress.com/australia/claims.
- Claims are handled by Chubb, the insurer behind the American Express policy. Notify them as soon as possible and within 30 days of the theft, damage or product failure, either online at americanexpress.com/australia/claims or by calling 1800 236 023 in Australia. Keep your itemised receipt, the card statement proving the purchase, and photos of the damage, plus the original warranty for a Buyer's Advantage claim. Chubb settles within 10 business days of receiving all your evidence and pays approved claims within 5 business days. Lodge early and keep every document dated, because incomplete paperwork is the usual cause of delay.
- No. The Amex Gold Card does not include mobile phone or screen insurance. If your phone is stolen or the screen cracks, the repair or replacement cost is yours, and a flagship screen repair runs from $200 to $600. There is one narrow exception: if you buy a new phone on the card, Card Purchase Cover can apply to theft or accidental damage for the first 90 days, up to $2,500 with a $50 excess. Beyond that window, or for everyday drops and water damage on an older handset, there is no cover. Some other Amex cards add a smartphone screen benefit, but the Gold Card does not.
- Yes. Because the Amex Gold Card has no travel cover at all, you need a separate travel insurance policy for any trip. The card pays nothing towards overseas medical, and Medicare does not cover you outside Australia, so a hospital admission abroad running $50,000 to $200,000 would be entirely on you. It also does nothing for cancellation, delays, lost luggage or rental excess. A standalone travel policy covers those risks from around $50 for a short overseas trip, and far less than a single day in an overseas hospital. Treat this card as shopping protection only and insure the trip separately.
- No. The Amex Gold Card has no travel insurance, so it covers nothing on a ski trip, whether on-piste or off-piste, in Australia or overseas. There is no medical cover for a skiing injury, no evacuation off the mountain, and no cover for delayed or lost gear. A helicopter evacuation and surgery after a serious fall can run tens of thousands of dollars, all out of pocket with this card. If you are heading to the snow, a dedicated travel policy with a winter-sports option is essential, and you should check that it includes off-piste skiing if you plan to leave the marked runs.
