No trip cancellation cover. This benefit is not included with the ANZ First, which is not eligible for ANZ complimentary travel insurance. Prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel, and a standalone travel insurance policy is required for this coverage.

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the ANZ First
No travel insurance. None. Here is the plain answer to the search for ANZ First travel insurance: the card does not carry it, and never has. ANZ reserves complimentary overseas travel cover for its Platinum and Black cards, so an ANZ First is not on the eligible list. Charge a flight to it and nothing insures the trip, no overseas medical, no cancellation, no lost luggage. Medicare covers nothing outside Australia, and a serious hospital admission abroad can run $50,000 to $200,000, all on you. What the card does keep is shopping cover: purchase protection and extended warranty on what you buy. For the trip itself, a standalone travel insurance policy is the only route, from around $40 for a short overseas stay.
- Nothing to activate or forget, because there is no travel cover on the card to switch on
- Low $30 annual fee, waived in any year you spend $20,000, leaves room to buy a policy that fits the trip
- No overseas emergency medical cover: a serious hospital admission abroad, commonly $50,000 to $200,000, is entirely on you
- No trip cancellation cover: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel
- No domestic interstate flight cover, and no lost or delayed luggage cover
- Every travel benefit reads not available: the ANZ First is a shopping card, not a travel product
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

How to make an ANZ First claim
Step 1: Do not call ANZ, contact Allianz Global Assistance
The booklet is clear that you should not contact ANZ in the event of a claim. For a stolen, damaged or faulty item bought on the card, call Allianz Global Assistance on 1300 135 271 within Australia, or lodge online at travel.agaassistance.com.au/anz/make-a-claim. Purchase Protection runs 90 days from purchase, so lodge early.
Step 2: Get approval before any warranty repair
For Extended Warranty, contact Allianz Global Assistance for approval before you start any repair or replacement, or part of the claim may not be paid. Only items with a manufacturer's serial number and a warranty of five years or less are eligible.
Step 3: Gather your proof and keep it dated
For any claim, include the receipt showing the whole purchase price was charged to the card, proof of ownership or valuation, and for theft a police report lodged as soon as practical. Some claims are approved in a few weeks, others draw follow-up document requests, so send complete paperwork the first time. Remember there is no travel cover here to claim against.
What people ask about the ANZ First
- You cannot, because there is no travel insurance on the ANZ First to activate. ANZ provides complimentary international travel insurance only on its Platinum and Black credit cards, and the ANZ First is not on that eligible list. Holding the card, or charging a trip to it, does not switch any travel cover on. The only complimentary insurance the ANZ First carries is Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty on eligible items you buy. If you want overseas medical, cancellation, or baggage protection for a trip, the only route is a standalone travel insurance policy bought before you leave Australia.
- For travel, no one, because the ANZ First has no travel, medical, or rental cover for anyone. The complimentary insurance it does carry, Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty, protects eligible items the accountholder charges in full to the card, not travellers on a trip. There is no spouse or dependent travel cover to extend, since the card is not an eligible travel-insurance card at ANZ. To protect anyone travelling, take out a separate travel insurance policy that names each traveller.
- It does not, because the ANZ First carries no rental vehicle excess cover at all, overseas or in Australia. That benefit sits inside ANZ's complimentary travel insurance, which is reserved for Platinum and Black cards, so an ANZ First cannot claim it. If a hire car is damaged or stolen, the excess is entirely on you, commonly $2,000 to $5,500 on an Australian hire. A standalone rental vehicle excess policy covers both Australian and overseas hires from a few dollars a day, and it is the only way to shift that cost off this card.
- It depends what you are claiming, and there is nothing to claim on the travel side because the card has none. For a Purchase Protection or Extended Warranty claim on an item you bought, the booklet says do not contact ANZ: instead call Allianz Global Assistance on 1300 135 271 within Australia, or lodge online at travel.agaassistance.com.au/anz/make-a-claim. Keep the receipt proving the whole purchase price was charged to the card, and for theft a police report. If you bought a standalone travel policy for a trip, claim through that insurer using the details in its own policy document.
- On the travel side, everything. The ANZ First has no overseas emergency medical cover, no evacuation, no trip cancellation, no baggage or delay cover, no personal liability, and no domestic interstate cover. It also has no rental vehicle excess cover, no mobile phone insurance, no refund cover, and no price guarantee. What it does cover is shopping: Purchase Protection for 90 days up to $10,000 an item, and Extended Warranty up to one extra year on the manufacturer's Australian warranty, both with no excess. Treat the ANZ First as a low-fee shopping card, not a travel product.
- Yes, and it is not optional if you want to be covered. Because the ANZ First has no complimentary travel insurance, a standalone policy is your only source of overseas emergency medical cover, which matters because Medicare pays nothing outside Australia and a serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000. A separate policy also covers cancellation, baggage, and rental excess, none of which this card provides. Buy the policy before you leave Australia, and check its pre-existing condition terms if they apply to you.
- Purchase Protection covers eligible items you buy on the ANZ First against theft, accidental damage, or permanent loss for 90 days from the date you take possession, with no excess. It pays up to $10,000 per item and up to $135,000 across the card account in any 12 months, though jewellery, watches, and new works of art are capped at $3,500 per claim. To be eligible, the whole purchase price must be charged to the card, and for theft you should report it to police as soon as practical. Extended Warranty sits alongside it, adding up to a year on the manufacturer's Australian warranty.
- No. The ANZ First does not include mobile phone or screen insurance, and it never carried a dedicated phone cover. If your phone is lost, stolen, or the screen cracks, the repair or replacement is your cost, and a flagship screen repair alone runs about $200 to $600. Purchase Protection can apply to a phone you buy outright on the card, for theft or accidental damage within 90 days of purchase, but that is not the same as ongoing phone insurance. For continuing cover, look at a standalone gadget policy or a card that offers phone insurance.
- No. There is no travel policy attached to the ANZ First, so skiing, snowboarding, and any snow-sports injury or equipment loss are not covered, on-piste or off-piste. On ANZ's Platinum and Black cards, on-piste snow sports are covered and off-piste is excluded, but the ANZ First is not an eligible travel-insurance card. For a ski or snowboard trip, take out a dedicated snow travel insurance policy, which typically covers on-piste activity and can add off-piste cover for an extra premium.
