Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Bank of Queensland Blue
No travel insurance. None at all. Search for BOQ Blue travel insurance and you hit a gap: the card carries some purchase and warranty cover, but nothing for a trip. Picture a cancelled flight to Bali, or a hospital admission in Thailand, and every dollar is yours to carry. Medicare stops at the airport, and a serious overseas admission can run $50,000 to $200,000. Most cardholders assume any Visa quietly insures their travels; this one does not, and the BOQ Complimentary Insurance booklet lists only purchase protection and extended warranty. A standalone travel policy starts at a few dollars a day and covers the cancellation, medical and baggage this card leaves open. If you travel, treat the Blue as a spending card and buy separate cover before you fly.
- No complimentary travel insurance to activate, so there is no spend threshold or registration step that could void a claim
- Visa is accepted overseas, and the card works abroad for everyday spending
- Purchase protection still applies to items bought while travelling, within its 90 day window
- No overseas emergency medical cover: a serious hospital admission abroad can run $50,000 to $200,000, entirely out of pocket
- No trip cancellation or interruption: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not reimbursable through this card
- No luggage, travel delay or missed connection cover of any kind
- 3.3% international transaction fee applies on overseas and foreign-currency spending
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

How to make a BOQ Blue purchase protection or warranty claim
Step 1: Contact Allianz Global Assistance, not BOQ or NAB
Lodge your claim with Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 072 791 or cardclaims@allianz-assistance.com.au as soon as possible. Do not contact Bank of Queensland or NAB. For an extended warranty claim, get Allianz approval before you start any repair or replacement, or the payout can be reduced.
Step 2: Gather proof of purchase and ownership
Keep the itemised sales receipt and the BOQ card account statement showing the full purchase price was charged to the card. For a theft claim, report it to police and obtain written confirmation. Photograph any damage before it is repaired.
Step 3: Submit within the claim windows
Report and lodge documents promptly, as unreasonable delay can reduce what is payable. Claims are assessed and paid in Australian dollars. Neither purchase protection nor extended warranty carries an excess, so an approved claim is paid without a deductible.
What people ask about the Bank of Queensland Blue
- No. The BOQ Blue Visa does not include any complimentary international travel insurance. This is confirmed on BOQ's own product page and in the BOQ Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance booklet, which lists only Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty cover. There is no overseas emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no baggage and no rental excess cover on this card. If you are travelling, especially overseas, you need a standalone travel insurance policy, because Medicare does not cover you outside Australia and a serious hospital admission abroad can run $50,000 to $200,000.
- There is nothing to register. Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty apply automatically when you charge the whole purchase price of an eligible item to your BOQ Blue card account. There is no spend threshold and no separate activation step. Because the card carries no travel or rental cover, there is no travel insurance to switch on before a trip. Keep your sales receipts and card statements, since you will need them if you ever claim through Allianz Global Assistance.
- The primary cardholder and any additional cardholders who reside in Australia are covered for eligible items bought entirely on the BOQ Blue card. Purchase Protection also covers items you buy as a gift for a permanent Australian resident. Because there is no travel insurance on this card, there is no spouse, partner or dependent travel cover of the kind you would find on a travel-enabled card. Cover applies to the goods you buy on the card, not to people travelling.
- Purchase Protection covers eligible items you buy entirely on the card against theft, accidental damage or permanent loss for 90 days from the date of purchase. There is no excess, and the total limit is $200,000 per card account in any 12 month period. Jewellery, watches and new works of art are capped at $5,000 per claim. To claim, contact Allianz Global Assistance, then provide the sales receipt and the card statement showing the purchase. Items left behind, lost without explanation, or damaged by wear and tear are not covered.
- Yes. Extended Warranty matches the manufacturer's Australian warranty on eligible items bought on the card, for the same period up to one extra year. The limit is $10,000 per item and $40,000 per card account in any 12 month period, with no excess. There is no cover once the original manufacturer's warranty runs past five years, and the item must have a manufacturer's serial number and a registered Australian warranty. Get Allianz Global Assistance approval before you start any repair or replacement, or the payout may be reduced.
- No. The BOQ Blue does not cover rental vehicle excess, in Australia or overseas. The complimentary insurance booklet covers only Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty, and it excludes motor vehicles. If your hire car is damaged or stolen, the full excess is yours to pay, commonly $2,000 to $5,500 on an Australian hire. If you rent cars regularly, a standalone rental excess policy costs a few dollars a day and covers both Australian and overseas hires that this card does not.
- Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, not BOQ or NAB. Phone 1800 072 791 within Australia or email cardclaims@allianz-assistance.com.au as soon as possible after the loss. Keep the itemised receipt and the card statement showing the purchase, and for theft, a police report. For an extended warranty claim, get approval before you repair or replace the item. Claims are assessed and paid in Australian dollars, and neither benefit has an excess, so an approved claim is paid without a deductible.
- Yes, if you travel. The BOQ Blue provides no overseas emergency medical cover, no trip cancellation, no baggage and no rental excess. Medicare does not cover you outside Australia, and a serious overseas hospital admission can run $50,000 to $200,000, entirely out of pocket on this card. Even for a domestic trip, there is no cancellation or luggage cover. A standalone travel insurance policy fills every one of these gaps, and it is the sensible companion to this card before any trip.
- No to all three. The BOQ Blue has no travel insurance, so there is no cover for skiing or snowboarding injuries or for any snow-trip cancellation. It also has no mobile phone insurance, so a stolen or cracked handset is not covered, and replacing a flagship phone out of pocket costs $1,200 to $2,300. The only complimentary cover on this card is Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty on items you buy with it. For anything involving travel or a phone, you need separate cover.
