Our take on travel insurance for the BankSA Amplify Qantas Platinum

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Unlimited overseas medical. Nothing paid if the trip never touched the card. That single line decides most claims on the BankSA Amplify Qantas Platinum travel insurance. Charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card, hold a return ticket, and the overseas cover is genuinely strong: unlimited emergency medical and evacuation, cancellation with no dollar cap, each carrying a $300 excess per claim. Most cardholders assume the card insures them the moment it lands in the wallet. It doesn't. Book the flights on points so only taxes hit the card, and you can fly home to a declined claim. Cover also stops at three consecutive months per trip, half the six months on the Amplify Signature tier. If you always put travel on the card and keep trips under three months, the overseas protection does real work.

What works on travel
  • Unlimited overseas emergency medical and evacuation: no dollar cap, $300 excess per claim
  • Cancellation with no dollar cap on prepaid travel, on a broad list of reasons including illness, injury, death of a relative, severe weather and retrenchment
  • Domestic interstate flight cover included: cancellation to $3,000, plus flight delay and luggage on interstate flights charged to the card
  • Pre-existing conditions handled by a stable-condition auto-list, with others assessable online for a $45 fee
Where travel breaks down
  • Activation by spend: no cover unless $500 of prepaid travel was charged to the card and you hold a return ticket
  • Trip length capped at three consecutive months, half the six months on the Amplify Signature tier
  • $300 excess applies to most travel claims, including medical, cancellation and delay
  • Travel delay only starts after six hours and caps at $1,100 for a family

Slow application and Qantas points not credited

Man I wish I had of read some reviews before engaging with this bank. I applied for a Amplify Credit Card back in February, my application took over 2 weeks to get processed, duplicating and providing documents several times along with numerous phone calls. Then the bonus Qantas reward points promised for signing up were not credited within the 12 week timeframe.

I have been with BankSA over 40 years. Branch service has become increasingly appalling.

How to make an Amplify Qantas Platinum claim

1

Step 1: Call the 24/7 assistance line before treatment or major expense where possible

For a medical emergency or evacuation overseas, call Allianz Global Assistance on +61 7 3305 7468 (reverse charge) before you incur major costs, so they can approve and coordinate treatment. Within Australia the emergency line is 1800 227 773. Save both numbers in your phone before you fly.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents

Lodge online with Allianz Global Assistance or call 1800 091 710, within 30 days of the incident or as soon as possible. Gather itemised accounts, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, police reports for theft, and your rental agreement and incident report for a rental excess claim.

3

Step 3: Prove the trip was charged to the card

Include the card statement showing at least $500 of prepaid travel was charged to the card, or the full rental for a hire-car claim. This is the first thing the insurer checks. Keep everything dated, and expect some back and forth by email before a decision.

FAQ

What people ask about the BankSA Amplify Qantas Platinum

  • The overseas cover switches on when you charge at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs to the card and hold a return overseas travel ticket, before you leave Australia. There is no separate registration step, but the cover is not automatic just from holding the card. Prepaid travel means things like the return ticket, departure taxes, and prepaid accommodation or tours. You also need to be under 81, and Level 2 cover runs for up to three consecutive months. If you book with points and only the taxes hit the card, check the eligibility rules carefully, because that may not meet the $500 spend condition.
  • Cover extends to the cardholder, their spouse or de facto partner, and dependent children under 25 who are not in full-time employment, when they travel with the cardholder for at least half the trip. Everyone must reside in Australia and hold a return ticket, and the $500 prepaid travel spend must be on the card. Each traveller needs to be under 81 at the time they become eligible. Dependent children under two are covered when travelling with the cardholder. Always confirm each traveller against the covered-persons definition in the policy booklet before you rely on the cover.
  • It reimburses the excess you are liable for after a hire car is damaged or stolen, up to $5,500, with a $300 excess per claim. It does not waive the damage, so the hire company still charges you the excess and you claim it back afterwards. The Amplify Qantas Platinum covers this both overseas, inside the international travel policy, and in Australia through a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit. Overseas hires need the $500 travel activation, while Australian hires only need the full rental charged to the card. Keep the rental agreement and the incident report for the claim.
  • Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind this policy, on 1800 091 710 or online. Lodge within 30 days of the incident or as soon as you can, and for an overseas emergency call the 24-hour line on +61 7 3305 7468 first. Keep the documents that prove the loss: itemised accounts, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and your card statement showing the trip was charged to the card. Some cardholders report clean approvals within a few weeks. Others describe repeated document requests, so lodge early and keep everything dated.
  • The biggest gap is activation: if you did not charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card, there is no overseas cover at all. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded unless they are on the auto-covered list or assessed for a $45 fee, and cover stops once a trip runs past three consecutive months. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, though on-piste skiing is covered. There is no mobile phone insurance, no price protection and no refund cover, and no medical cover for domestic trips, since Medicare applies within Australia.
  • Yes, through a separate Interstate Flight Inconvenience benefit that applies to return flights between Australian states charged to the card. It covers cancellation up to $3,000, flight delay of four hours or more at $125 per person up to $500, luggage up to $500 per item, and luggage delay. There is no overseas-style medical cover, because Medicare applies within Australia, and no domestic additional expenses benefit. Cover runs for up to 14 days from the start of the journey. It is genuine protection for interstate air travel, not a full domestic travel policy.
  • The Amplify Qantas Platinum is a Level 2 card, so overseas cover runs for up to three consecutive months per journey. The premium Amplify Signature tier stretches this to six months. If your trip runs past three months, the days beyond the limit are uninsured, and the period cannot be extended by you. Cover can be extended automatically by the insurer for up to four weeks if a covered event or a transport delay stops you returning on time. For a longer trip, a standalone travel insurance policy is the safer option for the extra days.
  • Some are. A defined list of stable conditions is automatically covered without assessment, provided you meet the criteria set out in the policy booklet. For anything not on that list, you can apply for assessment online at checkyourcover.com.au/banksa or by phone, and if Allianz Global Assistance accepts the condition, a $45 administration fee applies. Pre-existing conditions of your relatives or travel companions are not covered at all. Sort this out before you travel, because an unassessed condition that is not on the list will not be covered if you need to claim.
  • No. The Amplify Qantas Platinum does not include mobile phone or screen insurance, so theft or accidental damage to your phone is not covered by the card. A cracked flagship screen repair typically costs $200 to $600, and replacing the handset outright can run $1,200 to $2,300, all out of pocket. The card's protection benefits are purchase protection and extended warranty, which can cover a new phone bought on the card against theft or a covered breakdown, but not everyday accidental screen damage. For that, a standalone phone insurance policy or your home contents cover is the better fit.
  • On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, because they are not listed in the dangerous-activities exclusion. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, so a claim from skiing outside the marked runs would be declined. Your ski equipment itself is not separately insured while in use, so treat expensive gear as uncovered on the slopes. If you plan off-piste or backcountry runs, a dedicated snow travel policy is the safer option.
