Covers all prepaid non-refundable travel with no dollar cap if you cancel for a reason outside your control, such as illness, injury or death. A travel agent's cancellation fee is limited to the lesser of $500 or 15%. A $300 excess applies per claim, and the cover only works if the trip was charged to the card.

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the BankSA Amplify
Unlimited overseas medical. Three-month cap. Here is what that means for an Amplify Platinum cardholder. Charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card, hold a return ticket, and the overseas cover is genuinely strong: unlimited emergency medical, cancellation with no dollar cap, and rental excess to $5,500, each with a $300 excess (the amount you contribute to a claim). The catch is activation, not generosity. Most cardholders assume holding the card is enough. It isn't: the policy pays only when the trip was charged to the card, so a points booking where only taxes hit the card can leave you uninsured. That is where BankSA travel insurance parts ways with a standalone policy, which covers you the moment you pay for it, with no spend condition and no three-month ceiling. If you charge your travel to the card and stay under three months, the cover does the job; if you book on points or travel longer, read the activation clause first.
- Unlimited overseas emergency medical: no dollar cap on hospital and treatment, $300 excess per claim
- Cancellation with no dollar cap on all prepaid non-refundable travel, once activated
- Overseas rental excess to $5,500 plus a separate Australian rental excess benefit
- Interstate Flight Inconvenience cover: domestic cancellation to $3,000 and flight delay from 4 hours
- Covers cardholder, spouse or partner and dependants when each meets the $500 spend and return-ticket condition
- Activation by spend: no cover unless at least $500 of prepaid travel was charged to the card and you hold a return ticket
- Overseas cover stops at three consecutive months per trip on this Level 2 card
- Age cap of 81: travellers aged 81 or over get no international cover
- Pre-existing conditions need to be on the auto-covered list or assessed for a $45 fee
- No domestic medical cover, since Medicare applies within Australia

How to make a BankSA Amplify claim
Step 1: Call the 24/7 assistance line before treatment where you can
For a medical emergency overseas, call Allianz Global Assistance on +61 7 3305 7468 (reverse charge) before treatment where possible, or 1800 227 773 within Australia. Save both numbers in your phone before you fly.
Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents
Lodge online at insurance.agaassistance.com.au/banksa or call 1800 091 710 (Mon to Fri 8am to 8pm, Sat 8am to 5pm AEST). Gather itemised accounts, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and the rental agreement for an excess claim.
Step 3: Prove the trip was charged to the card
The first thing the insurer checks is activation, so include the card statement showing at least $500 of prepaid travel was charged to the account. Expect roughly 4 to 8 weeks from lodging to a decision, and keep every document dated.
What people ask about the BankSA Amplify
- The overseas cover switches on when you charge at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs to your BankSA Amplify and hold a return overseas travel ticket, before you leave Australia. There is no separate registration step, but the cover is not automatic from simply holding the card. You also need to be aged under 81, and your journey must begin and end in Australia. As an Amplify Platinum, this is a Level 2 card, so overseas cover runs for up to three consecutive months. If you book with points and only the taxes hit the card, check the spend condition carefully, because that may not be enough to activate the cover.
- Cover extends to the cardholder, their spouse or de facto partner, and dependants, when each person individually meets the conditions. That means each traveller charges at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card, holds a return ticket, and is aged under 81. Spouses and dependants must travel with the cardholder for at least half the trip, and dependants under two are covered when travelling along. Additional cardholders are not automatically covered travellers. Always check each person against the covered-persons definition in your PDS (Product Disclosure Statement, the policy booklet) before you rely on the cover.
- It reimburses the excess (the amount the hire company makes you pay towards damage) after a hire vehicle is damaged or stolen, up to $5,500. It does not waive the damage, so the hire company charges you the excess and you claim it back afterwards. The BankSA Amplify covers this both overseas, inside the international travel policy, and in Australia, through a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit. To qualify, charge the full rental to the card. A $300 excess applies per claim, so keep the rental agreement and repair invoice for your claim.
- Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind the policy. Lodge online at insurance.agaassistance.com.au/banksa or call 1800 091 710 (Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, Saturday 8am to 5pm AEST). Keep the documents that prove the loss: itemised accounts for medical or delay costs, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and your card statement showing the trip was charged. The first thing the insurer checks is that the trip was charged to the card. Some cardholders report clean approvals within a few weeks, others describe repeated document requests, so lodge early and keep everything dated.
- The biggest gap is activation: if you did not charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return ticket, there is no overseas cover at all. There is no mobile phone insurance, no refund cover and no price guarantee. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless they are on the auto-covered list or you have them assessed for a $45 fee, and cover stops once an overseas trip runs past three consecutive months. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, and there is no medical cover for domestic trips, since Medicare applies within Australia.
- As an Amplify Platinum, the card is a Level 2 card, so a single overseas journey is covered for up to three consecutive months. The premium Amplify Signature is a Level 1 card and runs to six months, but this tier stops at three. If your return to Australia is delayed by a covered event, the cover can be extended automatically by up to four weeks. For a trip longer than three months, you would need a standalone travel policy for the remaining days, because the card cover simply ends at the three-month mark.
- Yes, through a separate Interstate Flight Inconvenience benefit that applies to return flights between Australian states charged to the card. It covers domestic flight cancellation up to $3,000, flight delay from four hours at $125 per person, luggage and luggage delay, and funeral expenses. There is no overseas-style medical cover on domestic trips, because Medicare applies within Australia. The limits are lower than the overseas policy, so treat it as genuine cover for interstate air travel, not a full domestic travel policy.
- No. The BankSA Amplify does not include mobile phone or smartphone insurance, so theft or accidental damage to your phone is not covered. A cracked screen on a flagship phone typically costs $200 to $600 to repair, and a full replacement runs $1,200 to $2,300, all out of pocket. The card does include purchase protection, which can cover a phone bought on the card against theft, loss or accidental damage for four months from purchase, up to $10,000. That is separate from ongoing phone insurance and ends after the four-month window.
- On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, because they are not listed in the dangerous-activities exclusion. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, so a claim from skiing outside the marked runs would be declined. Your ski equipment itself is not separately insured while in use, so treat expensive gear as uncovered on the slopes. If you plan off-piste or backcountry runs, a dedicated snow travel policy is the safer option.
- Some are. The policy auto-covers a defined list of stable conditions without any assessment, provided you meet the requirements set out for each. Conditions outside that list are not covered unless you apply for assessment and Allianz Global Assistance confirms cover in writing, which carries a $45 administration fee. You can apply online at checkyourcover.com.au/banksa or by phone before you travel. If you have a pre-existing condition that is not on the list and not assessed, any claim related to it will be declined, so sort this out before you leave.
