Citi Simplicity travel insurance: what does a no-frills card actually cover?

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Citi Simplicity
No travel insurance. None at all. Here is what that gap costs the moment a trip goes wrong. Citi Simplicity travel insurance does not exist: this is a no-frills, no-fee card, and complimentary trip cover was never part of the deal. Most people assume any Mastercard quietly insures overseas trips. This one doesn't. Charge your flights to it and you are still uninsured for a cancelled trip, a hospital stay in Bali, or a bag that never turns up. Medicare covers nothing outside Australia, and a serious admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000, all on you. Standalone travel insurance for a two-week overseas trip starts at around $60 to $150, far less than one night in a foreign hospital. If you travel at all, treat this card as a way to pay and buy a separate policy before you go.
- No annual fee, so nothing is wasted carrying it alongside a travel card that has real cover
- Nothing to activate or forget, because there is no travel policy tied to card spend
- No overseas emergency medical, so a hospital bill abroad is entirely yours
- No trip cancellation, so prepaid flights and hotels are not reimbursed if you cancel
- No luggage, delay, evacuation or interstate cover of any kind
- A foreign transaction fee of around 3.4% makes the card costly to use abroad anyway

A credit card with no annual fee, plus complimentary purchase cover
Citi Simplicity Credit Card is a good credit card which has NO annual fee but still has lots of rewards to offer... Citi Simplicity Card also includes complimentary Purchase Cover Insurance, Extended Warranty Insurance and more which gives me a peace of mind.

You get what you pay for
They changed the card from 55 days to 44 days and when you pay 1 day late, they charge you interest for the following 2 months. What a joke! I was forced to sign up to this card because Citibank no longer offered the Emirates card which I'd had for more than 10 years and now faced with an inferior product. But I guess you get what you pay for and in this instance it is $0 because there's no annual fee.

A terrible credit card with no service from Citibank
Dont ever go near citibank for any credit cards - they treat people terribly and do not help resolve any issues. They use an offshore call centre who says whatever suits them. Poor service and dreadful staff

How to claim on the Citi Simplicity card insurance
Step 1: Check you are claiming purchase protection or extended warranty
These two are the only complimentary insurances on the Citi Simplicity, and both are handled by Allianz Global Assistance, not Citi or NAB. The card has no travel or rental cover, so there is nothing to claim there.
Step 2: Lodge with Allianz Global Assistance and gather documents
Get claim forms at claims.agaassistance.com.au, or call 1800 072 791 within Australia. Keep the receipt, proof the item was charged in full to the Citi Simplicity card, and, for a warranty claim, the manufacturer's original warranty terms.
Step 3: Wait for assessment and escalate if needed
Allianz Global Assistance assesses a completed claim within 10 business days of receiving all requested documents. Depreciation applies to purchase protection payouts, for example 20 percent a year on electronics. If a claim is declined and you disagree, you can escalate to AFCA for free.
What people ask about the Citi Simplicity
- There is nothing to activate, because the Citi Simplicity has no complimentary travel insurance to switch on. This is a no-frills, no-fee card, and trip cover is not one of its benefits. The two complimentary insurances it does carry, purchase protection and extended warranty, need no activation step either. They apply automatically as long as you charge the whole purchase price of an eligible item to the card and keep your receipt. If you want travel cover for a trip, you will need a separate standalone travel insurance policy, since the card provides none.
- The complimentary cover on the Citi Simplicity is limited to purchase protection and extended warranty, and these apply to the primary cardholder and any additional cardholders on the account, for new items charged in full to the card. Because there is no travel or rental insurance, there are no covered travellers, no spouse or partner cover, and no dependent children cover to speak of. For a purchase or warranty claim, the key condition is not who you are but proof the item was bought with the card. Check the Citi Complimentary Insurance booklet for the exact definitions.
- It does not work, because the Citi Simplicity has no rental vehicle excess benefit, in Australia or overseas. If you damage or lose a hire car, the excess (the amount the rental company makes you pay towards the damage) is entirely your cost, commonly $2,000 to $5,500 on an Australian hire. This card gives you nothing towards it. At the counter you can take the rental company's own excess-reduction product, or arrange a standalone rental excess policy, which covers Australian hires from a few dollars a day. Do not decline the counter cover assuming the card has your back, because it does not.
- You can only claim on purchase protection or extended warranty, since those are the sole complimentary insurances on the card. Both are handled by Allianz Global Assistance, not Citi or NAB. Lodge a claim at claims.agaassistance.com.au or call 1800 072 791 within Australia, and keep the receipt plus proof the item was charged in full to the Citi Simplicity card. For a warranty claim, add the manufacturer's original warranty terms. Allianz assesses a completed claim within about 10 business days, and depreciation applies to purchase protection payouts. If a claim is declined and you disagree, you can escalate to AFCA for free.
- The Citi Simplicity does not cover any travel or rental risk. There is no overseas emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no evacuation, no luggage or delay cover, no interstate travel cover, and no rental vehicle excess in Australia or abroad. It also has no mobile phone insurance, no price protection and no refund cover. What it does include is purchase protection, which covers new goods against theft, accidental damage or loss for 90 days, and extended warranty. Treat this as a low-fee everyday and balance-transfer card, not a travel or device card, and cover the gaps with separate policies.
- Yes. The Citi Simplicity carries no travel insurance at all, so it does nothing for an overseas medical emergency, a cancelled trip, lost luggage or a delayed flight. Medicare does not cover you outside Australia, and a serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000, which would fall entirely on you. For any trip, treat the card as a way to pay and take out a standalone travel insurance policy before you go. Compare policies on cover level and excess rather than price alone, since the cheapest option often caps medical or leaves out what you actually need.
- No. The Citi Simplicity does not include mobile phone insurance, and it has no travel policy that might otherwise treat a phone as luggage. So a cracked screen, theft or water damage to your phone is not covered by this card in any way. Replacing a flagship smartphone out of pocket costs roughly $1,200 to $2,300, and a screen repair $200 to $600. If phone cover matters to you, look at a standalone device insurance policy, or a card that offers a dedicated mobile phone benefit when you pay your monthly bill with it.
- Yes, this is the card's main insurance strength. Purchase protection covers new items charged to the Citi Simplicity against theft, accidental damage or loss for 90 days from the purchase date. There is no per-item dollar cap on most goods, with a $200,000 annual limit per card account, though jewellery, watches and new artworks are capped at $5,000 a claim. No excess applies. Extended warranty then adds up to a year on top of the manufacturer's Australian warranty, capped at $10,000 an item. Keep the receipt and proof the purchase was charged to the card, since Allianz asks for both.
- No. Snow sports are only ever covered as part of an overseas travel insurance policy, and the Citi Simplicity has no travel cover of any kind. So there is no cover for a skiing or snowboarding injury, on-piste or off-piste, and no cover for the medical evacuation that a serious snow injury overseas can require. A helicopter off the mountain and the surgery after it would be entirely your cost. If you are planning a ski trip, a dedicated snow travel insurance policy is the only way to be covered, because this card offers no travel or medical protection at all.
