No trip cancellation cover. This benefit is not included with the BOQ Platinum. Prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel, so a standalone travel insurance policy is required for that protection.
BOQ Platinum travel insurance: what does the card actually cover?

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Bank of Queensland Platinum
No travel insurance. Not anymore. If you are searching for BOQ Platinum travel insurance, the honest answer is that it was switched off for events on or after 15 May 2026. So picture yourself in a hospital in Bali with a $40,000 bill: this card does nothing, because Medicare stops at the airport and there is no overseas medical cover here. Most cardholders assume a Platinum card still carries the old complimentary trip cover, yet the current booklet lists only purchase protection and extended warranty, nothing for travel. A basic standalone travel policy for a short overseas trip starts at a few dollars a day and covers the medical, cancellation and baggage this card once did. If you travel at all, treat the BOQ Platinum as a shopping card and buy a separate travel insurance policy before you go.
- You keep purchase protection and extended warranty, the only complimentary cover the card still carries
- No activation traps or duration caps to track, because there is no travel policy to switch on
- No overseas emergency medical cover: a serious hospital bill abroad, often $50,000 or more, is entirely yours
- No trip cancellation: prepaid flights and hotels are not refundable through the card if you cancel
- No rental vehicle excess and no domestic interstate cover, both removed on 15 May 2026
- No baggage, delay or personal liability cover: every travel mishap is out of pocket
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

How to make a BOQ Platinum purchase protection or warranty claim
Step 1: Contact Allianz Global Assistance, not BOQ or NAB
Lodge your claim with Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 072 791 or at cardclaims@allianz-assistance.com.au as soon as reasonably possible. The booklet is clear that you should not contact Bank of Queensland or NAB about a claim.
Step 2: Gather proof of purchase and ownership
Keep the itemised receipt or tax invoice, the BOQ Platinum card statement showing the full purchase was charged to the account, and, for warranty claims, the manufacturer's warranty terms. For theft or loss, report it to police as soon as practicable and get written confirmation.
Step 3: Submit the completed claim form and wait for assessment
Allianz Global Assistance assesses the claim within 10 business days of receiving a completed claim form and all requested documents, and writes to you within 10 business days if more information is needed. If a decision does not go your way, you can escalate to AFCA for free.
What people ask about the Bank of Queensland Platinum
- You cannot, because the BOQ Platinum no longer includes complimentary travel insurance. For events on or after 15 May 2026, the current Policy Information Booklet provides only Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty, with no international or domestic travel cover to activate. Those two retail benefits switch on automatically when you charge the whole purchase price of an eligible item to the card account, so there is no separate registration step. If you are travelling, you now need a standalone travel insurance policy, since nothing on this card will cover overseas medical, cancellation or baggage. Older BOQ guides that describe up to six months of overseas travel insurance refer to a previous booklet that no longer applies.
- The complimentary cover applies to the BOQ Platinum accountholder for items charged in full to the card account. Because the card carries only Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty, cover attaches to eligible purchases, not to travellers, so there is no spouse, partner or dependent-child travel cover to consider. There is also no overseas medical or evacuation cover for anyone. For Purchase Protection, an item bought anywhere in the world, or given as a gift to a permanent Australian resident, can be covered when you paid for it with the card. If you need family travel cover, that has to come from a separate travel insurance policy.
- It does not, because the BOQ Platinum no longer offers rental vehicle excess cover. The hire-car excess benefit, both overseas and within Australia, was removed for events on or after 15 May 2026, so an accident in a hire car leaves the full excess with you, commonly $2,000 to $5,500. The current booklet covers only Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty on retail items, nothing to do with hire cars. If you hire vehicles, take the rental company's excess-reduction cover at the counter or buy a standalone rental excess policy, which covers Australian and overseas hires from a few dollars a day.
- Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind the policy, on 1800 072 791 or at cardclaims@allianz-assistance.com.au. Do not contact Bank of Queensland or NAB about a claim. Lodge it as soon as reasonably possible and keep proof of purchase and ownership, your card statement showing the full purchase was charged to the account, and, for warranty claims, the manufacturer's warranty terms. Allianz Global Assistance assesses a completed claim within 10 business days of receiving all requested documents. Some claims are approved quickly, others attract repeated document requests, so submit everything dated and complete. If a decision does not go your way, you can escalate to AFCA for free.
- Almost everything travellers look for. There is no overseas or domestic travel insurance, no emergency medical or evacuation cover, no trip cancellation, no baggage or travel delay cover, and no rental vehicle excess, all removed on 15 May 2026. Purchase Protection also excludes items left unattended in public, goods sent unaccompanied, wear and tear, electrical or mechanical breakdown, and anything left in a motor vehicle. Extended Warranty does not cover items whose original manufacturer's warranty runs longer than five years. In short, the card protects eligible retail purchases but leaves every travel risk to a separate policy.
- No. The BOQ Platinum does not include mobile phone or screen insurance. If your handset is lost, stolen or has a cracked screen, the card will not contribute, and a flagship screen repair runs about $200 to $600 while a full replacement can reach $1,200 to $2,300. Purchase Protection can help if a newly bought phone is stolen or accidentally damaged within 90 days of purchase and you charged it to the card, but that is a one-off purchase benefit, not ongoing phone insurance. For ongoing cover, a standalone mobile phone policy or your home contents insurer is the better route.
- No. Because the BOQ Platinum carries no travel insurance at all, there is no cover for skiing, snowboarding or any snow-sports injury, on-piste or off. A medical evacuation off a mountain overseas can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and none of that would be covered by this card. Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty apply to retail items you buy, not to activities or trips. If you are planning a ski holiday in Australia or overseas, you need a dedicated travel insurance policy, ideally one with a snow-sports option, well before you travel.
- Yes. Purchase Protection covers eligible items charged in full to the card against theft, accidental damage or permanent loss for 90 days from the date of purchase. General goods are covered for their full purchase price, while jewellery, watches and new works of art are capped at $5,000 per claim, and the most payable across all claims is $200,000 per card account each 12 months. No excess applies. Items left unattended in public, sent unaccompanied, or left in a vehicle are excluded, so keep new purchases with you and hold on to receipts. Claim within the timeframe set out in the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement).
- Yes. Extended Warranty matches the manufacturer's Australian warranty with an equal extra period, up to a maximum of one additional year, on items charged in full to the card. It pays the lower of the repair cost, the replacement cost or the original purchase price if a covered item breaks down after the manufacturer's warranty ends, up to $10,000 per item and $40,000 per card account each 12 months. There is no cover if the original manufacturer's warranty runs longer than five years, and you must get the insurer's approval before any repair. Keep the receipt and the original warranty terms, as the insurer asks for both.
