Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Coles Platinum Mastercard
Platinum in the name, nothing in the bag for travel. Here is the part shoppers miss. Most people read a Platinum Mastercard and assume it quietly insures overseas trips the way a premium travel card would, and it does not. There is no coles platinum mastercard travel insurance at all: no overseas emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no rental excess, no domestic flight cover. Medicare stops at the airport, and a serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000, every dollar of it on you. A standalone travel policy covers the same trip from a few dollars a day. Tap the card for groceries and flybuys points and the gap costs you nothing. Charge a holiday to it expecting cover, and you fly uninsured.
- No spend threshold to forget, because there is no travel cover to switch on
- Additional cardholders can be added to the account, though none gain any travel cover
- No overseas emergency medical: a serious hospital admission abroad can run $50,000 to $200,000, entirely out of pocket
- No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel
- No rental excess and no interstate cover: the card adds nothing for road trips or domestic flights
- A Platinum badge with no travel cover: holding it insures no trip on its own

How claims work on the Coles Platinum Mastercard
Step 1: Know there is no travel or rental insurance to claim
The Coles Platinum Mastercard includes no complimentary travel insurance or rental excess cover, so there is no travel policy to claim against. For any overseas medical, cancellation, luggage or hire-car excess loss, only a standalone policy can pay.
Step 2: For a purchase or warranty claim before 1 December 2026, contact Allianz Global Assistance
Complimentary Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty are administered by Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 072 791, with claim forms at claims.agaassistance.com.au. Keep your receipt and the card statement showing the purchase was charged to the card. This cover is being removed from 1 December 2026, so it applies only to purchases made before that date.
Step 3: For a fault, fraud or disputed transaction, contact Coles Credit Cards
Card servicing, suspected fraud and chargeback disputes are handled by Coles Credit Cards on 1300 306 397, with the issuer NAB behind the account. Have your statement and the transaction details ready before you call.
What people ask about the Coles Platinum Mastercard
- There is nothing to activate, because the Coles Platinum Mastercard does not include complimentary travel insurance. Unlike many premium cards, it has no overseas medical, cancellation, luggage or rental excess cover to switch on with a spend threshold or a return ticket. The only complimentary cover on the card is Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty for eligible purchases, and even that is being removed from 1 December 2026. If you want cover for an upcoming trip, you need to buy a standalone travel insurance policy, because holding this card gives you no travel protection at all.
- No current Coles credit card comes with complimentary travel insurance, and that includes every Platinum tier. When people search for coles credit card travel insurance they are usually surprised to learn the Platinum, Rewards, Low Rate and No Annual Fee Mastercards all leave overseas and domestic travel cover to you. The only complimentary insurance on the Platinum cards is Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty, which never covered travel and is being removed from 1 December 2026 in any case. For overseas medical, trip cancellation or rental excess, compare a dedicated travel insurance policy rather than relying on a Coles card.
- For travel purposes, nobody is covered, because the card carries no complimentary travel insurance for the cardholder, a partner or children. The Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty cover protects eligible purchases charged to the card, not people on a trip, and it is being removed from 1 December 2026. You can add additional cardholders to the account, but that only gives them spending access, not any insurance cover. So if you are planning a family holiday, each traveller needs their own or a family travel insurance policy arranged separately before departure.
- It does not work, because the Coles Platinum Mastercard has no rental vehicle excess benefit, either overseas or within Australia. Many premium cards reimburse the excess you owe after a hire-car accident, up to a cap, but this card offers nothing of the sort. If you damage a hire car, the full excess is yours to pay, commonly $2,000 to $5,500 in Australia and up to $8,000 overseas. A standalone rental excess policy covers that risk from a few dollars a day, which is worth arranging before you collect the keys.
- It depends on the claim, because the card has no travel or rental insurance to lodge against. For a Purchase Protection or Extended Warranty claim on an eligible purchase made before 1 December 2026, contact Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 072 791 or use the forms at claims.agaassistance.com.au, and keep your receipt and card statement. For a disputed transaction, suspected fraud or a card fault, contact Coles Credit Cards on 1300 306 397, with NAB behind the account. For a travel loss such as a medical bill, cancellation or lost luggage, only a standalone travel insurance policy can pay.
- It does not cover travel, full stop. There is no overseas or domestic emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no luggage cover, no travel delay and no rental vehicle excess, overseas or within Australia. The one complimentary cover it does have, Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty for eligible purchases, is being removed from 1 December 2026, so it is not something to count on either. Treat this as a payment and rewards card, and arrange a standalone travel insurance policy and a separate rental excess policy for any trip.
- Yes, and it is not a close call. The Coles Platinum Mastercard provides no overseas emergency medical cover, so aside from anything Medicare does at home, every dollar of an overseas hospital bill is yours, and a serious admission can run $50,000 to $200,000. It also has no trip cancellation, luggage or rental excess cover. A standalone travel insurance policy covers all of these for a single trip, often for less than the cost of one night's accommodation. Treat the card as a payment and rewards tool, and arrange real travel insurance separately.
- The Coles Platinum Mastercard benefits are built around flybuys points and everyday spending, not travel. On the insurance side, the only complimentary cover is Purchase Protection, which runs 90 days against theft, loss or accidental damage, and Extended Warranty, which adds up to a year on the manufacturer's Australian warranty. Both are underwritten by Allianz Australia and administered by Allianz Global Assistance. Coles has confirmed both are being removed from 1 December 2026, so purchases made on and from that date get no cover. There has never been any complimentary travel insurance on these cards.
- No, the Coles Platinum Mastercard does not include mobile phone insurance. If your phone is stolen or the screen cracks, the repair or replacement is entirely your cost, and replacing a flagship handset out of pocket runs $1,200 to $2,300. Some cards link phone cover to paying your monthly phone bill on the card, but this one does not, and its Purchase Protection cover is being removed from 1 December 2026 anyway. If you want protection for your device, look at a dedicated mobile insurance policy or check whether your home contents policy includes portable items.
- No. Because the Coles Platinum Mastercard has no complimentary travel insurance at all, there is no cover for skiing, snowboarding or any other activity, on-piste or off-piste, in Australia or overseas. A ski injury abroad can mean a large hospital bill and a costly evacuation, none of which this card would pay. If you are heading to the snow, take out a travel insurance policy that specifically includes your snow activities, and read its on-piste and off-piste terms carefully, since this card leaves that risk entirely with you.
