Our take on travel insurance for the Coles Rewards Mastercard

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. None at all. Here is what that means before you fly with a Coles Rewards Mastercard. Most shoppers assume a rewards card quietly covers overseas trips the way premium cards do, but this one does not. There is no coles mastercard travel insurance here: no overseas emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no rental excess, and no domestic flight cover. Medicare stops at the airport, and a serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000, all of it on you. A standalone travel insurance policy covers the same trip from a few dollars a day. If you only use the card for flybuys points on the groceries, that gap costs you nothing. Charge a holiday to it expecting cover, and you are travelling uninsured.

What works on travel
  • No spend activation to forget, because there is no travel cover to switch on
  • Up to four additional cardholders at no extra fee, though none gain any travel cover
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas emergency medical: a serious hospital admission abroad can run $50,000 to $200,000, entirely out of pocket
  • No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel
  • No rental excess and no domestic interstate cover: the card adds nothing for road trips or interstate flights
  • Holding the card insures nothing: a standalone policy is required for any real travel protection

Fine for rewards, painful when something goes wrong

If you are looking for a basic card that gives rewards, the Coles Card rates highly, BUT IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM, EXPECT LONG PHONE WAITS AND A LOT OF FRUSTRATION.

Service has slipped

Hopeless services. Used to be better but now Outsourced to Phillipines call centre that is useless.

How claims work on the Coles Rewards Mastercard

1

Step 1: Know there is no travel or purchase insurance to claim

The Coles Rewards Mastercard includes no complimentary travel insurance or rental excess cover, so there is no travel policy to claim against. Any purchase or warranty cover that once applied sat with the retired Coles Platinum tier and is being removed from 1 December 2026.

2

Step 2: For a fault, fraud or disputed transaction, contact Coles Credit Cards

Card servicing, fraud and chargeback disputes are handled by Coles Credit Cards on 1300 306 397, with the issuer NAB behind the account. Have your statement and the transaction details ready.

3

Step 3: For trip protection, arrange a standalone policy before you travel

Because the card provides no travel cover, buy a separate travel insurance policy for overseas medical, cancellation and luggage, plus a standalone rental excess policy if you plan to hire a car.

FAQ

What people ask about the Coles Rewards Mastercard

  • There is nothing to activate, because the Coles Rewards Mastercard does not include complimentary travel insurance. Unlike many premium cards, it has no overseas medical, cancellation, luggage or rental excess cover to switch on with a spend threshold or a return ticket. It is a supermarket rewards card issued by NAB, built around flybuys points rather than travel benefits. If you want cover for an upcoming trip, you need to buy a standalone travel insurance policy, because holding this card gives you no travel protection at all.
  • No current Coles credit card comes with complimentary travel insurance. The Rewards Mastercard, the Low Rate Mastercard and the No Annual Fee Mastercard all leave overseas and domestic travel cover to you. Historically some purchase protection and extended warranty cover sat with the retired Coles Platinum tier, but that is being removed from 1 December 2026 and never included travel insurance in any case. For overseas medical, trip cancellation or rental excess, compare a dedicated travel insurance policy rather than relying on a Coles card.
  • For travel purposes, nobody is covered, because the card carries no complimentary travel insurance for the cardholder, a partner or children. On the card account itself you can add up to four additional cardholders at no extra fee, but that only gives them spending access, not any insurance cover. So if you are planning a family holiday, do not count on this card to protect anyone. Each traveller needs their own or a family travel insurance policy arranged separately before departure.
  • It does not work, because the Coles Rewards Mastercard has no rental vehicle excess benefit, either overseas or within Australia. Many premium cards reimburse the excess you owe after a hire-car accident, up to a cap, but this card offers nothing of the sort. If you damage a hire car, the full excess is yours to pay, commonly $2,000 to $5,500 in Australia and up to $8,000 overseas. A standalone rental excess policy covers that risk from a few dollars a day, which is worth arranging before you collect the keys.
  • There is no travel or purchase insurance on the Coles Rewards Mastercard to lodge a claim against. If your issue is a disputed transaction, suspected fraud or a card fault, contact Coles Credit Cards on 1300 306 397, with the issuer NAB behind the account, and keep your statement and transaction details handy. If your issue is a travel loss such as a medical bill, cancellation or lost luggage, only a standalone travel insurance policy can pay a claim. The card itself provides no cover to draw on.
  • Yes, and it is not a close call. The Coles Rewards Mastercard provides no overseas emergency medical cover, so Medicare aside, every dollar of an overseas hospital bill is yours, and a serious admission can run $50,000 to $200,000. It also has no trip cancellation, luggage or rental excess cover. A standalone travel insurance policy covers all of these for a single trip, often for less than the cost of one night's accommodation. Treat this card as a payment and rewards tool, and arrange real travel insurance separately.
  • No, the Coles Rewards Mastercard does not include mobile phone insurance. If your phone is stolen or the screen cracks, the repair or replacement is entirely your cost, and replacing a flagship handset out of pocket runs $1,200 to $2,300. Some cards link phone cover to paying your monthly phone bill on the card, but this one does not. If you want protection for your device, look at a dedicated mobile insurance policy or check whether your home contents policy includes portable items, rather than expecting cover from this card.
  • No. Because the Coles Rewards Mastercard has no complimentary travel insurance at all, there is no cover for skiing, snowboarding or any other activity, on-piste or off-piste, in Australia or overseas. A ski injury abroad can mean a large hospital bill and a costly evacuation, none of which this card would pay. If you are heading to the snow, take out a travel insurance policy that specifically includes your snow activities, and read its on-piste and off-piste terms carefully, since this card leaves that risk entirely with you.

Other cards worth considering

Rewards Mastercard is a strong choice — but depending on what you prioritize, one of these may suit you better.
