Our take on travel insurance for the Commonwealth Platinum Awards

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Unlimited overseas medical. A two-step activation that quietly voids it. That gap is the whole story of the CommBank Platinum credit card travel insurance. Charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card in a single transaction, switch the policy on in NetBank or the CommBank app, and the overseas cover is genuinely strong: unlimited emergency medical and evacuation, plus $2,500,000 in personal liability. Miss either step and you have nothing. Most cardholders assume paying for the trip is enough. It isn't, and activating after you leave Australia leaves a three-day hole with no cover. Cancellation is capped at just $5,000, where the complimentary travel insurance on premium cards often covers all prepaid costs. If you always activate before you fly and take shorter overseas trips, this does the job. If you have a health history, travel past three months, or forget step two, read the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement, the policy booklet) first.

What works on travel
  • Unlimited overseas emergency medical and hospital cover, with a $500 excess per claim
  • Unlimited emergency evacuation and repatriation, arranged by a 24/7 Cover-More assistance line
  • $2,500,000 personal liability cover while overseas
  • Interstate Flight Inconvenience adds real domestic cover: $3,000 cancellation plus luggage and delay benefits
  • Stable pre-existing conditions on the auto-accepted list are covered at no extra cost
Where travel breaks down
  • Two-step activation: no cover unless you spend $500 prepaid in one transaction and switch the policy on before you fly
  • Activate after leaving Australia and a three-day no-cover period applies
  • Cancellation capped at just $5,000, well below the all-prepaid cover a standalone policy provides
  • No cover for travellers aged 80 or over without a paid upgrade, and no domestic medical cover
  • Cover runs a maximum of three months per journey, so longer trips need a paid extension

What does Commonwealth Platinum Awards Travel Insurance actually cover?

Cancellation is capped at $5,000 for Platinum and only starts after the $500 single-transaction spend and manual activation. A points booking where only taxes hit the card may not meet the spend test.

Deductible : A$500

Covers your prepaid, non-refundable travel and cancellation fees if you have to cancel or amend the trip, capped at $5,000 for a cardholder ($10,000 with family). A $500 excess applies per claim. Cover only starts once you have charged $500 of prepaid travel to the card in a single transaction and activated the policy, and the covered-reasons list is broad, from illness and death to strikes, natural disasters and involuntary redundancy.

What's covered
  • Unexpected illness, injury or death of you, a travel companion or a relative
  • Strike, riot, hijack, civil protest, weather or natural disaster affecting your transport
  • Loss or theft of passport, travel documents or transaction cards
  • Your home made uninhabitable by fire, explosion, earthquake or flood
  • Involuntary redundancy after 2 continuous years with the same employer
What's not covered
  • Claims where you were already aware the trip might be cancelled or disrupted
  • Unwillingness to travel, or a change of plans
  • Existing medical conditions not on the auto-accepted list or not assessed and upgraded
  • Business or contractual obligations, other than covered involuntary redundancy
Cover only switches on after the $500 single-transaction prepaid spend and manual activation. Activate after leaving Australia and a three-day no-cover period applies.

Deductible : A$500

Pays your overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses with no dollar cap, subject to a $500 excess per claim. Emergency dental for sudden acute pain is included up to $1,500, and hospital incidentals pay $75 per 24 hours up to $7,500. Cover runs for up to 12 months from the onset of the illness or injury and only applies once the policy is activated.

What's covered
  • Overseas hospital admission, surgery and treatment
  • Emergency dental for sudden, acute pain to natural teeth, to $1,500
  • Hospital incidentals of $75 per 24 hours, to $7,500

What's not covered
  • Existing medical conditions not on the auto-accepted list or not upgraded
  • Travellers aged 80 or over without the paid over-80 upgrade
  • Treatment after you could reasonably have returned to Australia
  • Pregnancy-related claims beyond the PDS limits

Deductible : No deductible

Covers emergency medical evacuation and assistance overseas with no dollar limit, arranged by the Cover-More 24/7 team. If the worst happens, funeral, cremation or return of remains is covered up to $12,500 for a cardholder. There is no excess on the evacuation and assistance benefit.

What's covered

  • Existing conditions not covered or upgraded

Deductible : A$500

Pays up to $1,500 for emergency dental treatment overseas to relieve sudden, acute pain in natural teeth. It sits under the medical benefit, so the $500 medical excess applies. Routine, planned or cosmetic dental work is not covered.

What's not covered
  • Routine check-ups, planned or cosmetic dental work
  • Damage to dentures, crowns or bridges

Deductible : No deductible

Pays hospital incidentals of $75 for each 24 hours you spend in hospital overseas, up to $7,500. It helps with the small out-of-pocket costs of an overseas hospital stay, on top of the medical benefit. Cover applies only while the policy is active.

What's covered
  • Incidental costs during an overseas hospital admission
  • $75 per 24-hour period, to a $7,500 total
What's not covered
  • Domestic hospital stays
  • Stays not related to a covered emergency

Deductible : A$500

Reimburses reasonable additional accommodation (room rate only) and transport if your journey is disrupted by a covered event, capped at $5,000 for a cardholder ($10,000 with family), with a $500 excess. Covered disruptions include illness or injury, the death of a relative, transport cancellations from strikes or weather, and loss of your passport. It keeps you moving when a trip goes sideways, but the cap is modest.

There is no excess. You will need written confirmation of the delay from the carrier.

It also covers the cost of an unused connection you have to rebook. The event must be one that cannot be delayed for your late arrival.

It also covers the cost to resume your journey, provided more than 14 days remain on the policy and you resume within 12 months. Claims tied to an existing medical condition are excluded.

What's covered

Deductible : A$250

Under Interstate Flight Inconvenience, it covers cancelled non-refundable domestic travel and related extra costs up to $3,000, with a $250 excess, once you charge the full return interstate flight to the card. Covered reasons include death or serious illness of you, a companion or relative, your home being destroyed, quarantine, jury duty or involuntary redundancy. Taxes and travel agent charges are not included.

  • Death or serious illness, home destroyed, quarantine, court, redundancy
What's not covered
  • Taxes, airport or travel agent charges

  • Existing conditions not covered

Deductible : No deductible

If your interstate flight is delayed 4 hours or more and no alternative transport is offered, it reimburses meals and refreshments of up to $35 each, to a total of $100, with no excess. It is a small benefit aimed at the airport wait, not the wider trip. The full interstate return flight must have been charged to the card.

What's covered
  • Meals and refreshments during a 4-hour-plus interstate flight delay
  • $35 each, to a $100 total
What's not covered
  • Delays under 4 hours
  • Delays where alternative transport is provided

No standalone domestic additional expenses cover. Extra interstate travel and accommodation are only paid as part of a domestic cancellation claim, within the same $3,000 cap. Costs from a disruption mid-trip that is not a cancellation are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • Additional expenses outside a covered domestic cancellation claim
  • Any domestic medical cost, since Medicare applies in Australia

Deductible : A$250

During interstate travel, it covers theft, loss or accidental damage to your clothing and personal goods up to $750 per item, to a total of $1,500 per trip, with a $250 excess. Depreciation applies to older electronics and communication devices. The same exclusions as the overseas baggage benefit apply.

What's covered
  • Theft, loss or damage to personal goods on interstate trips
  • $750 per item, to a $1,500 total
  • Depreciation applied per the PDS table
What's not covered

What's covered
  • Essential clothing and toiletries after a 12-hour interstate luggage delay
  • $150 each, to a $450 total
What's not covered
  • Delays under 12 hours
  • Purchases without receipts

Caught out by the single-transaction rule

It is useless Travel insurance, in order to be eligible, you need to spend more than 500 AUD dollars on SINGLE transaction with your CREDIT CARD BEFORE your trip, multiple transactions does not count. I lost 3000 dollars from rental car because with this stupid insurance.

How to make a Platinum Awards claim

1

Step 1: Activate first, then call the assistance line before treatment where possible

Cover only exists if you charged $500 of prepaid travel to the card in one transaction and activated the Overseas Travel Policy. For a medical emergency overseas, contact the 24/7 Cover-More assistance team before treatment so costs can be arranged directly.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents

Lodge online at commbank.com.au/cbatravelclaims or call Cover-More on 1300 467 951. Gather itemised accounts, a police or airline Property Irregularity Report for loss or theft filed within 7 days, and receipts for any expenses.

3

Step 3: Prove the trip was charged and activated

Include your card statement showing the $500 prepaid travel transaction and your Certificate of Insurance. Cover-More checks activation and proof of purchase first, so send everything dated. Expect back-and-forth on documents before a decision.

FAQ

What people ask about the Commonwealth Platinum Awards

  • There are two steps and you need both. First, spend at least $500 in a single transaction on prepaid overseas travel, such as your return airfare, accommodation, a cruise or a tour, and charge it to your Platinum Awards card before you leave Australia. Second, activate the Overseas Travel Policy in NetBank, the CommBank app or by calling Cover-More on 1300 467 951, which sends you a Certificate of Insurance. Holding the card is not enough on its own, and if you activate after leaving Australia there is a three-day no-cover period. Multiple smaller transactions do not meet the $500 single-transaction test.
  • Cover extends to the cardholder, their spouse or de facto partner, and dependent children who are travelling with the cardholder, once the trip is charged to the card and the policy is activated. Family members are only covered while they travel with you, and the sums insured for benefits 1 to 3 are combined limits for you and your family rather than per person. Additional cardholders are not automatically covered travellers. Travellers aged 80 or over are not covered for the main benefits unless the paid over-80 upgrade is purchased before travel.
  • It reimburses the excess (the amount the hire company charges you towards damage) you become liable for after an overseas hire car is damaged or stolen, up to $2,250, with no separate excess to pay. It does not waive the damage, so you pay the hire company first and claim it back afterwards. You must be the nominated driver, charge the rental, and have bought the hire company's own motor insurance or damage waiver. The important catch is scope: this benefit applies to overseas hires only, so an Australian hire car is not covered and any excess there is yours to pay.
  • Claims are handled by Cover-More, the administrator behind the policy, underwritten by Zurich. Lodge online at commbank.com.au/cbatravelclaims or call 1300 467 951, and for an overseas medical emergency contact the 24/7 assistance team before treatment where possible. You will need itemised accounts, a police or airline report filed within seven days for loss or theft, and your card statement proving the $500 prepaid travel spend. Some cardholders report a settled, uncomplicated claim, while others describe long waits and repeated document requests, so lodge early and keep everything dated.
  • The biggest gap is activation: with no $500 single-transaction spend and no manual activation, there is no cover at all. Existing medical conditions outside the auto-accepted list, and travellers aged 80 or over, are excluded without a paid upgrade. There is no domestic rental excess cover, no mobile phone insurance, and no domestic medical cover, since Medicare applies in Australia. On-piste and off-piste snow sports are excluded unless you buy the paid Snow Extras upgrade, and cover runs a maximum of three months per journey.
  • It depends on your trip. For a short overseas holiday where you charge the prepaid travel to the card and activate the policy, the unlimited overseas medical and evacuation cover is genuinely useful. But the $5,000 cancellation cap is low, there is no cover for Australian hire-car excess, pre-existing conditions and travellers aged 80 or over need a paid upgrade, and trips are capped at three months. If any of those apply to you, a standalone travel insurance policy would fill the gap and usually covers all prepaid costs and longer trips.
  • The Overseas Travel Policy covers a maximum of three months per journey for Platinum cardholders, measured from your departure date. If you plan to travel longer, you can apply for a paid extension of the period of cover before you leave, up to the limits in the PDS. Cover can also be extended automatically at no cost if your scheduled return to Australia is delayed by something outside your control. For anything beyond a three-month trip without an upgrade, a standalone annual or long-stay policy is the safer option.
  • No. There is no mobile phone or screen insurance with the Platinum Awards card. A phone can only be claimed under the overseas baggage benefit if it is lost or stolen, and even then you must supply its IMEI number, the claim is subject to the $3,000 per-item limit, and depreciation is deducted. Everyday accidental screen damage is not covered. Replacing a flagship smartphone out of pocket costs around $1,200 to $2,300, so a dedicated device policy or your home contents insurance may be worth considering.
  • Not as standard. Unlike many Allianz-underwritten cards, the CommBank policy does not cover snow sports automatically. On-piste skiing, off-piste skiing and heli-skiing are only covered if you buy the paid Snow Extras upgrade before you travel. Snow sport equipment is also excluded from the baggage benefit. If you are planning a ski trip, either add the Snow Extras upgrade or take a dedicated snow travel insurance policy, otherwise a skiing injury and the medical evacuation that can follow would not be covered.
  • No. The rental vehicle excess benefit applies to overseas hires only, capped at $2,250. If you hire a car in Australia and it is damaged or stolen, the excess is entirely your responsibility, and Australian hire-car excesses commonly run $3,000 to $5,500. The Interstate Flight Inconvenience cover deals with domestic flights, cancellation and luggage, not car hire. A standalone rental excess policy is the way to cover Australian hires, often from a few dollars a day.
