Covers your prepaid, non-refundable travel and cancellation fees if you have to cancel or amend the trip, capped at $5,000 for a cardholder ($10,000 with family). A $500 excess applies per claim. Cover only starts once you have charged $500 of prepaid travel to the card in a single transaction and activated the policy, and the covered-reasons list is broad, from illness and death to strikes, natural disasters and involuntary redundancy.
CommBank Gold Awards travel insurance: what does it actually cover?

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Commonwealth Gold Awards
Unlimited overseas medical. No domestic cover, and a manual activation step most people miss. That combination makes the CommBank Gold card travel insurance the thinnest cover in the Awards range. Charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card in a single transaction, activate the policy in the CommBank app, and you get unlimited emergency medical overseas with a $500 excess, cancellation to $5,000, and rental excess to $2,250. Miss either step and there is no cover at all. Most Gold holders assume the interstate flight cover the Platinum gets applies here too; it doesn't, so a cancelled Sydney to Perth flight is on you. If you only travel overseas, charge the whole trip to the card and remember to activate, the medical cover earns its place. If you fly interstate or forget to activate, this card leaves real gaps.
- Unlimited overseas emergency medical and evacuation, $500 excess per claim
- Trip cancellation to $5,000 for a cardholder, $10,000 with family, on a broad covered-reasons list
- Personal liability overseas up to $2,500,000
- On-piste skiing and snowboarding included once the policy is activated
- Manual activation by spend: no cover unless $500 of prepaid travel is charged in one transaction and the policy is activated
- No domestic cover: Interstate Flight Inconvenience does not apply to Gold cards
- Three-month per-journey cap, and travellers aged 80 or over need a paid upgrade
- Pre-existing conditions and off-piste or adventure activities need a paid upgrade

DOOMSDAYER (ProductReview)
Medical claim in Europe was handled well
Had kidney stones in Europe. Rang the number. They noted my claim. Then a medical specialist rang to help. 3-4 weeks later payment was sent.
Emma (ProductReview)
Could not activate the cover online
I have tried multiple different times to activate my international travel insurance. Every single time, I'm taken to a blank screen.
GAIA (ProductReview)
Too much paperwork to claim
I hurt my leg stepping out of a pool. They wanted my doctor to fill in pages of info and of course I would have had to book an appointment with him and pay.

How to make a Gold Awards claim
Step 1: Activate first, then call the assistance line before treatment where possible
Cover only exists if you charged $500 of prepaid travel to the card in one transaction and activated the Overseas Travel Policy. For a medical emergency overseas, contact the 24/7 Cover-More assistance team before treatment so costs can be arranged directly.
Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents
Lodge online at commbank.com.au/cbatravelclaims or call Cover-More on 1300 467 951. Gather itemised accounts, a police or airline Property Irregularity Report for loss or theft filed within 7 days, and receipts for any expenses.
Step 3: Prove the trip was charged and activated
Include your card statement showing the $500 prepaid travel transaction and your Certificate of Insurance. Cover-More checks activation and proof of purchase first, so send everything dated. Expect back-and-forth on documents before a decision.
What people ask about the Commonwealth Gold Awards
- You must do two things before you leave Australia. First, spend at least $500 of prepaid overseas travel, such as your return ticket, accommodation or a tour, in a single transaction on the Gold Awards. Second, activate the Overseas Travel Policy in NetBank, the CommBank app, or by calling Cover-More on 1300 467 951, so you receive a Certificate of Insurance. Holding the card is not enough on its own, and multiple smaller transactions do not meet the $500 single-transaction test. If you activate only after leaving Australia, a three-day no-cover period applies before benefits start, so set it up before you fly.
- The primary cardholder is covered, along with a spouse or de facto partner and dependent children, provided they travel with the cardholder and the trip was charged to the card and the policy was activated. For the overseas medical, liability and assistance benefits, the limits are a combined amount for you and your family per journey, not a separate sum for each person. Additional cardholders are not automatically covered travellers. Check the covered-persons and dependent-child definitions in your Product Disclosure Statement, the policy booklet, before you rely on family cover.
- It reimburses the excess, the amount the hire company makes you pay towards damage, that you become liable for after an overseas hire car is damaged or stolen, up to $2,250. It does not waive the damage, so you pay the hire company first and claim the excess back afterwards. The cover applies to overseas hires only, not to cars hired in Australia, which is a common and costly surprise on a domestic road trip. To qualify, charge the full rental to the card, be the nominated driver, and buy the hire company's own motor insurance or damage waiver first.
- Claims are handled by Cover-More, which issues and administers the cover for CommBank, with Zurich as the insurer. Lodge online at commbank.com.au/cbatravelclaims or call Cover-More on 1300 467 951, and advise them of any claim as soon as possible and within 60 days. They will ask for itemised accounts, a police or airline Property Irregularity Report filed within 7 days for any loss or theft, and your card statement showing the $500 prepaid travel transaction. The first thing they check is whether you met the spend and activation steps, so send your Certificate of Insurance and keep everything dated.
- The biggest trap is activation: with no $500 single-transaction prepaid spend and no manual activation, there is no cover at all. The Gold Awards also has no domestic cover, because Interstate Flight Inconvenience does not apply to Gold cards, and no mobile phone insurance or price guarantee. Pre-existing medical conditions and travellers aged 80 or over are excluded unless assessed and upgraded for a premium. Off-piste skiing, snowboarding off the marked runs, and most adventure activities are excluded without the paid Snow Extras or Adventure upgrade. Cover also stops after three months per journey.
- No. Interstate Flight Inconvenience, the benefit that covers cancelled interstate flights, flight delays and domestic luggage, does not apply to Gold cards. The Platinum, Diamond, Smart and Ultimate Awards cards include it, but the Gold Awards does not, so a cancelled or delayed Sydney to Perth flight is not reimbursable through this card. The complimentary cover on the Gold Awards is an overseas travel policy only. If you fly interstate regularly and want protection for cancellations or delays, a standalone domestic travel insurance policy would fill that gap.
- No. The Gold Awards does not include any mobile phone or screen cover, so theft of or accidental damage to your phone is not insured. A phone can only be claimed under the overseas baggage benefit if it is lost or stolen while travelling, and that claim needs the device's IMEI number, is capped at $3,000 per item, and has depreciation and a $500 excess applied. There is no cover for a cracked screen at home. Replacing a flagship smartphone out of pocket costs $1,200 to $2,300, so a separate phone insurance or a home contents add-on is worth considering.
- Some are, automatically. The policy auto-covers a defined list of stable conditions at no extra cost, so straightforward, well-managed conditions may already be included. Anything outside that list, and any traveller aged 80 or over, is excluded unless you complete a health assessment and buy the paid Existing Medical Conditions or over-80 upgrade before you travel. There is no fixed fee; the premium is calculated from your assessment. If you have any health history, do not assume you are covered. Check the auto-covered list in your Product Disclosure Statement and arrange an assessment before you fly.
- On-piste skiing and snowboarding are included under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, once you have completed the $500 spend and activated the cover, because they are not in the dangerous-activities exclusions. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding, heli-skiing and snowmobiling are excluded unless you buy the paid Snow Extras upgrade before you travel. Your snow sport equipment is also excluded from the baggage benefit unless Snow Extras is added. If you plan to ride outside the marked runs, buy the upgrade or take a dedicated snow travel policy, or one off-piste run could mean a denied claim.
