Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Latitude Low Rate Mastercard
No travel insurance. None at all. Here is what that means the day something goes wrong overseas. Picture a hospital admission in Bali and a bill climbing past $50,000. The Latitude Low Rate Mastercard travel insurance cover most people assume rides along with a Mastercard simply does not exist here, so Medicare stops at the airport and the whole bill is yours. This is a low rate card built for carrying a balance at 13.99% p.a., not for protecting trips. A standalone policy for a two week overseas trip starts at around $80 to $150 and covers the medical, cancellation and luggage this card leaves out. If you travel even once a year, buy that cover separately, because the card contributes nothing.
- Low 13.99% p.a. purchase rate: the card is built for carrying a balance, not for travel cover
- Up to 55 interest-free days when the closing balance is paid in full each month
- No overseas emergency medical cover: a serious hospital admission abroad can run $50,000 to $200,000, all on you
- No trip cancellation cover: prepaid flights and hotels are not refundable through the card
- No domestic or interstate flight inconvenience cover
- 3% foreign transaction fee on overseas and online-overseas spend

This is a terrible product and even worse customer support. Staff have minimal knowledge of the products, or even how credit cards work.

The rate stings
You will rue the day you applied for a Latitude credit card. The credit rate is nearly 30 percent.

How claims work on the Latitude Low Rate Mastercard
Step 1: Check what is actually covered
There is no complimentary travel, medical or rental excess insurance on this card, so there is nothing to claim for a trip, an overseas hospital bill or a hire-car excess. The only complimentary cover is the e-commerce purchase protection for online orders that fail to arrive.
Step 2: For an online order problem, use the AIG e-commerce cover
If an eligible online purchase is not delivered, arrives incomplete or arrives damaged and the seller will not refund, the e-commerce purchase protection underwritten by AIG may respond. Keep the order confirmation, proof the purchase was charged to the card, and your correspondence with the seller.
Step 3: For travel or medical costs, rely on a standalone policy
Because the card provides no travel cover, a medical bill, cancellation or delay overseas has to go through a separate travel insurance policy you have bought. For card servicing call the Latitude Service Centre on 13 10 24, or 1800 005 809 if the card is lost or stolen.
What people ask about the Latitude Low Rate Mastercard
- No. The Latitude Low Rate Mastercard has no complimentary travel insurance of any kind. There is no overseas emergency medical cover, no trip cancellation, no luggage cover, and no domestic or interstate flight inconvenience benefit. It is a low rate card built for carrying a balance at 13.99% p.a., not a travel product. If you are travelling, whether overseas or interstate, you need a standalone travel insurance policy, because this card contributes nothing towards a medical bill, a cancelled trip or a delayed flight.
- There is nothing to activate, because the card carries no complimentary travel insurance. Some Australian cards switch on overseas cover once you charge your prepaid travel to the card, but the Latitude Low Rate Mastercard has no such benefit to trigger. Spending on the card, holding a return ticket or calling ahead makes no difference, since the cover does not exist. For any overseas medical, cancellation or delay protection, you must buy a separate travel insurance policy before you leave.
- For travel insurance, nobody is covered, because the card has none. The only complimentary benefit is an e-commerce purchase protection, underwritten by AIG, and it is available to the current cardholder for eligible online purchases that fail to arrive. It does not extend travel medical or cancellation cover to you, a partner or children, since there is no travel policy attached to the card. To protect a family on a trip, take out a standalone travel insurance policy that names each traveller.
- It does not, because the card has no rental vehicle excess cover. If you damage a hire car or it is stolen, the full excess the hire company charges is yours to pay, whether you rented overseas or in Australia. Some Australian cards reimburse that excess up to a cap, but the Latitude Low Rate Mastercard is not one of them. A standalone rental excess policy costs from a few dollars a day and covers both Australian and overseas hires, which is the practical way to close this gap.
- For travel or medical costs there is no claim to make, since the card has no travel insurance. The only complimentary cover you can claim on is the e-commerce purchase protection, underwritten by AIG under a group policy issued to Mastercard, for an eligible online order that is not delivered, arrives incomplete or arrives damaged when the seller will not refund. Keep your order confirmation, card statement and seller correspondence. For card servicing call the Latitude Service Centre on 13 10 24, or 1800 005 809 if the card is lost or stolen.
- Almost everything a traveller or shopper might expect. There is no overseas or domestic travel insurance, no emergency medical cover, no trip cancellation, no luggage cover, no rental vehicle excess, no extended warranty, no price protection and no mobile phone insurance. The single complimentary benefit is a narrow e-commerce purchase protection for online orders that fail to arrive. Treat this as a no-insurance card and arrange separate travel and purchase cover where you need it.
- Not in the usual sense. The card does not protect items you buy against theft or accidental damage, and it has no extended warranty. What it does carry is a complimentary E-Commerce Purchase Protection, underwritten by AIG, which covers eligible online purchases that are not delivered, arrive incomplete or arrive damaged when the seller refuses to refund. So if a parcel never turns up you may have a claim, but if you drop or lose a new item after it arrives, this card offers no cover.
- No. The Latitude Low Rate Mastercard does not include mobile phone or screen insurance, whether or not you pay your phone bill with the card. If you crack a screen or your handset is stolen, the repair or replacement is entirely your cost, and a flagship screen repair alone runs $200 to $600. If phone cover matters to you, look at a standalone gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a card that lists mobile phone protection as a benefit, because this one does not.
- No. Because the card has no travel insurance at all, there is no cover for skiing, snowboarding or any snow-sports injury, on-piste or off-piste. A medical evacuation off a mountain, either in Australia or overseas, would be entirely at your own cost, and those bills can run into tens of thousands of dollars. Snow trips carry real injury risk, so take out a dedicated snow or travel insurance policy that specifically includes on-mountain cover before you go.
- It is not enough on its own, because the card provides no travel insurance. For any overseas trip you should arrange a standalone travel insurance policy that covers emergency medical, cancellation, luggage and rental excess, none of which this card offers. A policy for a two week overseas trip typically starts around $80 to $150, far less than a single overseas hospital admission. Do not rely on the card for cover, and remember the 3% foreign transaction fee that applies when you spend overseas or online in a foreign currency.
