Our take on travel insurance for the NAB Low Rate

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. None at all. The NAB Low Rate Card is a low-interest card built around a 13.49% purchase rate, not a travel product, and it carries no complimentary international or domestic travel cover. Most people assume any NAB card quietly insures overseas trips. This one doesn't. Medicare stops the moment you leave Australia, so a hospital admission in Bali or Bangkok can run $50,000 to $200,000, all on you. Search "nab low rate travel insurance" hoping for a safety net and the honest answer is there isn't one here. A standalone travel insurance policy starts at a few dollars a day for a short overseas trip and covers medical, cancellation and baggage that this card leaves uncovered. If you travel even once a year, treat cover as something you buy separately, because the card contributes nothing to it.

What works on travel
  • Simple to understand: there is no travel cover to activate, misread or forget
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas emergency medical cover: a serious hospital admission abroad can cost $50,000 to $200,000 out of pocket
  • No trip cancellation cover: prepaid flights and hotels are not reimbursed if you cancel
  • No domestic or interstate flight inconvenience cover
  • No rental vehicle excess cover, overseas or in Australia
  • Any travel protection must be bought as a separate standalone policy

How to claim on the NAB Low Rate Card mobile phone insurance

1

Step 1: Confirm your phone bill was charged to the card

Cover only applies while you pay your monthly mobile phone bill with the NAB Low Rate Card. Check your recent statements show the bill was charged before you lodge, because a missed month suspends cover the following month.

2

Step 2: Contact AIG to lodge the claim

Mobile phone insurance is underwritten by AIG Australia Limited. Call AIG on +61 3 9522 4111, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm AEST, as soon as the phone is damaged or stolen. Report a theft to police first and keep the report.

3

Step 3: Send proof and pay the excess

Provide proof of purchase or ownership, the phone bill charged to the card, and a repair quote or police report. A $50 excess applies to each claim, and cover is capped at $1,000 per claim and $1,650 a year.

FAQ

What people ask about the NAB Low Rate

  • No. The NAB Low Rate Card does not include any complimentary international or domestic travel insurance, and it never has. It is a low-interest card built around a 13.49% purchase rate, not a travel product, so there is no overseas medical cover, trip cancellation, baggage or rental vehicle excess benefit attached to it. If you search for NAB Low Rate travel insurance expecting a safety net, the honest answer is that there is not one on this card. For any overseas or interstate trip, you would need to arrange a separate standalone travel insurance policy, which starts at a few dollars a day for a short trip and covers the medical and cancellation costs this card leaves entirely with you.
  • The mobile phone insurance is the only complimentary cover on the card, and it is underwritten by AIG Australia Limited. It covers accidental damage and theft of your mobile phone up to $1,000 per claim, with a $50 excess each time and an annual limit of $1,650. Cover applies only while you pay your monthly mobile phone bill with the NAB Low Rate Card, and it switches off the month after any missed payment. It covers the whole handset, not just the screen. Accessories, lost phones, and theft from unattended baggage are excluded. To claim, contact AIG and provide proof the bill was charged to the card.
  • Claims go through AIG Australia Limited, the underwriter of the mobile phone insurance, on +61 3 9522 4111, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm AEST. Lodge the claim as soon as the phone is damaged or stolen, and report any theft to police first so you have the report. AIG will ask for proof of purchase or ownership, a repair quote or the police report, and evidence that your monthly phone bill was charged to the card. A $50 excess applies to each claim. Keep in mind cover is suspended for any month that follows a missed phone-bill payment, so check your statements before you lodge.
  • No. The NAB Low Rate Card provides no rental vehicle excess cover, for hires in Australia or overseas. If a hire car is damaged or stolen, the excess set in your rental agreement is entirely yours to pay, and that amount commonly runs from $2,000 to $8,000. The card also carries no roadside assistance. If you hire cars, your options are the hire company's own excess-reduction cover at the counter, usually around $30 to $40 a day, or a separate standalone rental excess policy that covers Australian and overseas hires from a few dollars a day. Do not rely on this card at the rental desk, because it contributes nothing towards the excess.
  • No. The NAB Low Rate Card does not include purchase protection or extended warranty cover. Those benefits sit on other NAB cards, including the off-sale Low Rate Platinum, but not on this one. That means a new purchase stolen or accidentally damaged shortly after you buy it is not reimbursed through the card, and the manufacturer's warranty on appliances or electronics is not extended. The only complimentary cover on the Low Rate Card is mobile phone insurance through AIG. For valuable one-off purchases, check whether your home and contents policy covers them, or consider a card that carries purchase protection if that benefit matters to you.
  • No, not for travel. The card is designed to keep interest low on everyday purchases, not to insure trips, so it leaves every travel risk uncovered: overseas medical, evacuation, cancellation, baggage and rental excess. Medicare does not cover you outside Australia, and a serious hospital admission overseas can cost between $50,000 and $200,000. For fuller travel protection, you would supplement this card with a dedicated travel insurance policy bought separately for each trip. Used as intended, for low-rate everyday spending at home with mobile phone cover on the side, the card does its job. As travel protection, it does nothing, so plan to buy that cover elsewhere.
  • No. Because the NAB Low Rate Card carries no travel insurance at all, there is no cover for skiing, snowboarding or any snow-sports injury, on-piste or off-piste, in Australia or overseas. A snow trip involves some of the highest medical and evacuation costs in travel, and a helicopter off a mountain plus surgery can run into tens of thousands of dollars. None of that is insured by this card. If you are heading to the snow, a dedicated travel insurance policy with a winter-sports option is the only way to cover the medical, evacuation and equipment costs. Buy it before you travel, and check that the specific activities you plan are included.
  • Because the card has no travel or rental cover, no travellers are insured under it, so questions about spouses, partners or dependent children travelling with you do not apply here. The only cover is the mobile phone insurance, and it protects the cardholder's own mobile phone, provided the monthly phone bill for that phone is charged to the NAB Low Rate Card. There is one free additional cardholder on the account, but that does not add any travel or rental cover, since none exists on the card. For anyone in the household who travels, cover has to be arranged separately through a standalone travel insurance policy.
