NAB Qantas credit card travel insurance: what does the Signature actually cover?

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature
Six months of overseas cover. A $600 excess on the big claims. That trade-off is the story of the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature travel insurance. Charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card and the cover does real work: $20 million for emergency medical, $25,000 cancellation, and a journey that can run half a year rather than the 30 days the lower NAB cards stop at. The catch is activation, not the limits. Most cardholders assume the cover switches on the moment they hold the card, but book the flights on points so only taxes hit the card and you can land in a Bali hospital with nothing behind you. A standalone policy skips the $500 spend rule and usually carries a smaller excess than $600. If you charge your travel to the card and travel while under 81, this is one of the stronger complimentary covers on an Australian card.
- Overseas emergency medical to $20 million, with evacuation and repatriation on top
- Cover runs up to six months per trip, well beyond the 30 days on lower NAB cards
- Trip cancellation up to $25,000 for prepaid non-refundable travel charged to the card
- Personal liability to $2,500,000, higher than most complimentary policies
- Interstate flight cover included: domestic cancellation, delay and luggage
- Activation by spend: no cover unless you charge $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return ticket
- $600 excess on medical, cancellation and luggage claims, higher than many standalone policies
- Pre-existing conditions not covered unless assessed and confirmed in writing, with a $75 fee
- Age cut-off at 81: a traveller who turns 81 before the trip has no cover at all
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

How to make a NAB Qantas Rewards Signature claim
Step 1: Call the 24/7 assistance line before treatment where possible
For a medical or evacuation emergency overseas, call Allianz Global Assistance on +61 7 3305 8800 before you arrange treatment, so they can approve and coordinate your care.
Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents
Lodge international travel claims online at claimmanager.com.au/nab, or call 1800 187 025 within Australia. Keep itemised accounts, a police or carrier report for luggage, and your receipts.
Step 3: Prove the trip was charged to the card
Include the card statement showing you charged at least $500 of the trip to the account. Without that proof the cover may not have been activated, and the claim can be declined.
What people ask about the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature
- The overseas cover switches on when you charge at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs, such as your return airfare, accommodation or tours, to the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature before you leave Australia, and you hold a return overseas travel ticket. There is no separate registration step for this nab complimentary travel insurance, but holding the card alone is not enough. You also need to be aged under 81, and each trip is covered for up to six consecutive months. For domestic cover, either charge the entire return interstate flight to the card, or spend at least $250 on prepaid domestic travel and hold a return flight. If you book on points and only taxes hit the card, the $500 spend may not be met, so check the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) first.
- Cover extends to the cardholder, their spouse or de facto partner, and dependants who travel with the cardholder for at least half of the trip, once the trip is charged to the card. Each traveller must reside in Australia, hold a return ticket, and be aged under 81 when they become eligible. Dependants under two years old are also covered when travelling with the cardholder. When a couple travels together and both hold cards, only one can claim as the cardholder, and the other claims as a spouse. Check the sums insured in your PDS, because some limits are shared across the family rather than paid to each person.
- It reimburses the excess (the amount the hire company charges you towards damage) after a hire car is damaged or stolen, rather than waiving the damage itself. You pay the hire company first, then claim the excess back. The NAB Qantas Rewards Signature covers this both overseas, up to $10,000 with a $600 excess per claim, and in Australia through a separate benefit, up to $10,000 with a lower $100 excess. To qualify, charge the entire rental cost to the card and drive within the terms of the rental agreement. It does not cover damage caused while breaching the agreement, driving unlicensed, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Claims on this nab credit card travel insurance go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind NAB's cover. For international travel, lodge online at claimmanager.com.au/nab, or call 1800 187 025 within Australia. For a medical or evacuation emergency overseas, call the 24-hour line on +61 7 3305 8800 before arranging treatment. Keep the documents that prove your loss: itemised accounts for medical or delay costs, a report from the airline or police for luggage, and your card statement showing the trip was charged to the card. Some cardholders report claims paid in good time, while others describe assessments stalling for more than a month. Lodge early and keep everything dated.
- The biggest gap is activation: if you did not charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card, there is no overseas cover at all. Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered unless Allianz Global Assistance assesses and confirms them in writing, which carries a $75 fee. A $600 excess applies to medical, cancellation, luggage and overseas rental claims. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, though on-piste skiing is covered. There is no mobile phone insurance, no refund cover, no price guarantee and no roadside assistance. There is also no medical cover for domestic trips, because Medicare applies within Australia.
- Overseas cover lasts up to six consecutive months per journey on the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature, which is a Level 1 card. That is a real advantage over the lower NAB cards, which stop at 30 days. The clock starts when you leave home or on your departure date, whichever is later, and cannot be extended by you. If your return is delayed by a covered event, cover can automatically extend by up to four weeks, and longer if a doctor certifies you cannot travel. For most holidays and long trips this removes the duration worry, though the $500 activation spend and the under-81 age limit still apply.
- No. The NAB Qantas Rewards Signature does not include standalone mobile phone insurance, so theft of or accidental damage to your phone at home is not covered. While you are travelling overseas, a phone counts as luggage and is covered up to $1,000 per item under the international travel policy, with a $600 excess. That is a low limit for a flagship handset, and it does not apply outside a covered trip. Replacing a high-end smartphone out of pocket costs roughly $1,200 to $2,300, so if phone cover matters to you, a separate device policy or your home contents insurance is worth checking.
- Yes. On top of the overseas rental excess in the travel policy, the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature includes a separate Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance in Australia benefit. It reimburses the excess you are liable for after an Australian hire car is damaged or stolen, up to the lesser of the excess in your agreement or $10,000, with a $100 excess per claim. To use it, charge the entire vehicle rental to the card. It reimburses the excess only, so you pay the hire company first and claim it back, and it does not cover damage caused while breaching the rental agreement.
- Not automatically. The NAB Qantas Rewards Signature does not publish a list of conditions that are covered without assessment. No claim arising from a pre-existing condition is paid unless Allianz Global Assistance has assessed it and confirmed cover in writing, which costs a $75 administration fee. You apply for assessment online or by phone before you travel, and you must answer every question honestly or the confirmation can be void. Pregnancy is treated as a pre-existing condition, with no cover beyond the 26th week. If you have an ongoing condition, arrange the assessment early, well before you leave Australia.
- On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, because they sit inside the listed activities. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, so a claim from skiing outside the marked runs would be declined. Replacement sporting equipment is capped at just $200, and your gear is not separately insured while in use, so treat expensive skis as uncovered on the slopes. All the usual conditions still apply, including the $500 activation spend and the under-81 age limit. For a dedicated snow trip or any off-piste plans, a specialist snow policy is the safer choice.
