Our take on travel insurance for the NAB Rewards Signature with Velocity

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Twenty million dollars of overseas medical cover. A $600 excess, and an activation catch. That is the NAB Rewards Signature with Velocity travel insurance in one line. Charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card, hold a return ticket, and you are covered for emergency medical to $20 million, cancellation to $25,000, and trips of up to six months. Most cardholders assume that holding the card is enough. It isn't. Book the flights on points so only the taxes land on the card, and the cover may never switch on. The $600 excess bites too, and it applies to each medical, cancellation, luggage and overseas rental excess claim. Put your travel on the card and stay under six months, and the overseas cover earns its keep. Book on points, and read the activation clause first.

What works on travel
  • Overseas emergency medical to $20 million, with evacuation and repatriation covered to a separate $20 million
  • Cover runs up to six months per overseas trip, one of the longest windows on a complimentary policy
  • Cancellation to $25,000 per person, on a broad any-unexpected-event scope that includes pandemic diagnosis
  • Personal liability to $2,500,000 and a full interstate domestic travel section on top of the overseas cover
Where travel breaks down
  • Activation by spend: no cover unless you charge at least $500 of the trip to the card and hold a return ticket
  • $600 excess on medical, cancellation, luggage and overseas rental excess claims, well above the market and payable per claim
  • No pre-existing condition is auto-covered: each one must be assessed by Allianz, with a $75 fee once approved
  • Overseas cover stops at six months and the age cut-off is 81, so longer trips and older travellers fall outside it

Read the fine print before you claim

My insurer (Allianz via NAB credit cards) has refused to cover both expenses. On page 47 of the booklet is the phrase that we will pay for the higher of the two amounts, not both, but on page 21 that neatly tables all the benefits, this exclusion is not mentioned at all.

How to make a NAB Rewards Signature with Velocity claim

1

Step 1: Call Allianz Global Assistance before you incur major costs

For a medical emergency overseas, call +61 7 3305 8800, or 1800 010 075 in Australia, before treatment where you can. The assistance team can approve costs and arrange care, and the call record supports your claim.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents

Submit the claim to Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 187 025 as soon as reasonably possible. Collect itemised accounts, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and your card statement showing the trip was charged.

3

Step 3: Prove the trip was charged to the card

The first thing the assessor checks is that at least $500 of prepaid travel went on the card and you held a return ticket. Keep that statement, and expect roughly four to eight weeks for a decision on a complex claim.

FAQ

What people ask about the NAB Rewards Signature with Velocity

  • You activate the international cover by charging at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs to the card account before you leave Australia, and by holding a return overseas travel ticket. There is no separate registration step, but the cover is not automatic just from holding the card. You also need to be aged under 81 when you become eligible. Activation (charging the required travel to the card so the cover switches on) is the single most common thing cardholders get wrong. If you book flights on points and only the taxes hit the card, that may not meet the $500 spend condition, so check before you rely on the cover.
  • Cover extends to the cardholder, their spouse or de facto partner, and dependent children, once the trip is charged to the card and each traveller holds a return ticket and is aged under 81. Spouses and dependants must travel with the cardholder for at least 50% of the cardholder's period of cover to be eligible. Only one person can claim as the cardholder on a shared trip, and the others claim as a spouse or dependant. Check the covered-persons definition in your PDS (Product Disclosure Statement, the policy booklet) for the sums insured that apply to each person.
  • It reimburses the excess (the amount the hire company makes you pay towards damage or theft), up to $10,000. It does not waive the damage, so the hire company still charges you and you claim it back afterwards. The card covers this both overseas, inside the international travel policy with a $600 excess, and on Australian hire cars through a separate Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia benefit with a $100 excess. To qualify, charge the entire rental to the card account. Keep your rental agreement and the written confirmation of the amount you were liable for, as the assessor asks for both.
  • Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator behind the policy, on 1800 187 025, or online. For a medical emergency, call the 24/7 assistance line on +61 7 3305 8800 before treatment where you can. Lodge the claim as soon as reasonably possible and keep the documents that prove the loss: itemised accounts, a property irregularity report from the airline for luggage, and your card statement showing at least $500 of the trip was charged. Some cardholders report quick online approvals. Others describe repeated document requests, so lodge early and keep everything dated.
  • The biggest gap is activation: if you did not charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return ticket, there is no international cover at all. Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered unless Allianz assesses and confirms them, with a $75 fee once approved. A $600 excess applies to medical, cancellation, luggage and overseas rental excess claims. Overseas cover stops at six months per trip and at age 81. Off-piste skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, and there is no overseas-style medical cover for domestic trips because Medicare applies within Australia.
  • Yes. On top of the overseas rental excess in the travel policy, the card includes a separate Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance in Australia benefit. It reimburses the excess you are liable for after an Australian hire car is damaged or stolen, up to the lesser of your agreement excess or $10,000, with a $100 excess per claim. You must charge the entire cost of the vehicle rental to the card account for the cover to apply. This makes the card genuinely useful for a domestic road trip, which plenty of complimentary policies leave out entirely.
  • Yes, through a separate Domestic Travel Insurance section that applies to return interstate flights charged to the card. It covers domestic cancellation up to $3,000, flight delay after 4 hours ($125 per person, up to $300), additional expenses up to $3,000, and luggage up to $2,000. Cover runs for up to 28 days per journey. There is no domestic medical cover, because Medicare applies within Australia. To activate it, charge the full return domestic flight, or at least $250 of prepaid domestic travel, to the card before you travel.
  • No. The NAB Card Insurance Policy Information Booklet that applies to this card does not include a mobile phone or screen insurance benefit, so a cracked or stolen phone is not covered. Your handset may still be covered as luggage under the travel policy while you are on a covered trip, but only up to the $1,000 per-item sub-limit and subject to the $600 luggage excess. Outside a covered trip there is no phone cover at all. A flagship screen repair commonly costs $200 to $600, and a full replacement $1,200 to $2,300, so budget for that yourself.
  • On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, because they are not listed in the dangerous-activities exclusion. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, so a claim from an accident outside the marked runs would be declined. Your ski equipment is not separately insured while in use, so treat expensive gear as uncovered on the slopes. If you plan off-piste or backcountry runs, a dedicated snow travel policy is the safer choice. Remember the cover still needs the $500 activation and a return ticket.
  • Not automatically. There is no auto-covered list, so no cover applies to any pre-existing medical condition unless Allianz Global Assistance confirms it in writing after an assessment. You apply for that assessment online or by phone before you travel, and if cover is confirmed a $75 administration fee applies. Pre-existing conditions of your relatives and travel companions are never covered, which matters for a cancellation claim caused by a sick family member. If your condition is not assessed and approved, any claim connected to it will be declined, so sort this out before you book where you can.
