Our take on travel insurance for the Brim World Mastercard

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The World Mastercard's travel package looks generous on paper but the core benefit is weak. Emergency medical is capped at $5,000,000 yet only for the first 8 days of a trip and only for cardholders age 64 or under, with mandatory pre-authorization; there is no coverage at all at age 65 or older. It also has no trip cancellation, interruption or early return. What it does well is the secondary suite: flight and baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage, hotel burglary and a $150,000 common carrier accident benefit.

What works on travel
  • Emergency medical limit of $5,000,000 per trip
  • Flight delay and missed connection $500/day after 4 hours
  • Baggage delay $1,000 and lost or stolen baggage $1,000
  • $150,000 common carrier accident benefit
  • No foreign transaction fee
Where travel breaks down
  • Emergency medical only covers the first 8 days of a trip
  • No emergency medical coverage at age 65 or older
  • Medical requires pre-approval before treatment
  • No trip cancellation, interruption or early return
  • Hotel burglary limited to $500

FAQ

What people ask about the Brim World Mastercard

  • Yes, but with important limits. Out-of-province emergency medical is up to $5,000,000 per person per trip, but only for the first 8 consecutive days of a trip and only if you are age 64 or under. There is no emergency medical coverage at age 65 or older, and you must call Global Excel for pre-approval before treatment.
  • Not for emergency medical. The travel medical benefit applies only to cardholders (and their dependents of a cardmember) who are age 64 or under. Other benefits such as flight/baggage delay, lost baggage, hotel burglary and common carrier accident are not age-limited in the same way, but the headline medical cover does not apply at 65+.
  • No. Unlike the Brim World Elite Mastercard, the World Mastercard has no trip cancellation, trip interruption or early return coverage. Non-refundable prepaid costs are not reimbursed if you cancel or cut a trip short.
  • Emergency medical (first 8 days, age 64 or under), emergency evacuation/repatriation within that medical limit, flight delay and missed connection ($500/day, aggregate $1,000, after 4 hours), baggage delay ($1,000 after 6 hours), lost or stolen baggage ($1,000), hotel/motel burglary ($500) and common carrier accident AD&D ($150,000).
  • Collision/loss damage is primary, up to the vehicle's actual cash value, for cars with an MSRP up to $65,000 and rentals up to 48 consecutive days. You must decline the rental agency's CDW/LDW and charge the full rental to the card. Rental personal effects ($1,000) and rental AD&D ($100,000) are also included; third-party liability and roadside assistance are not.
  • Purchase security ($1,000 per occurrence, 90 days), extended warranty (doubles the manufacturer's warranty up to +1 year), mobile device insurance ($1,000 with a 10% deductible) and event ticket protection ($1,000). Purchase security, extended warranty and mobile device share a combined $25,000 per policy year cap.
  • Nothing extra. The insurance is embedded in the card and there is no separate premium. The Brim World Mastercard itself has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee.
  • Call Global Excel at 1-833-429-2746 (Canada/US) or +1-416-920-0938 collect as soon as the event occurs, and for medical before treatment. Submit the completed claim form and documents within 90 days; RSA pays approved claims within 60 days of receiving everything. Common Carrier Accident claims are handled directly by RSA.
