Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Brim Mastercard
The Brim Mastercard offers almost no travel protection. There is no emergency medical, no trip cancellation or interruption, and no flight or baggage delay coverage. Its only travel benefit is Common Carrier Accident Insurance — accidental death & dismemberment up to $100,000 — which pays nothing for illness or an ordinary injury. Treat this card as having no usable travel insurance and buy a standalone travel medical policy for any trip.
- Common Carrier Accident Insurance up to $100,000 ($300,000 per accident)
- Covers cardmember, spouse and dependent children
- No foreign transaction fees abroad (0% FX)
- No emergency travel medical coverage
- No trip cancellation or interruption
- No flight or baggage delay, and no lost baggage
- No hotel/motel burglary coverage
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What does Brim Mastercard Travel Insurance actually cover?
The free Brim Mastercard has no out-of-province or out-of-country emergency medical coverage; emergency hospital and medical bills while travelling are not covered. This is the card's biggest gap — buy separate travel medical insurance.
Emergency medical repatriation or evacuation is not covered, since it depends on emergency medical insurance, which this card does not provide.
Trip interruption insurance is not included; extra costs to return home or resume a trip after an unexpected event are not reimbursed.
Flight or travel delay insurance is not included; meals, accommodation and incidentals during a delay are not reimbursed.
Missed connection coverage is not included on this card.
Early return coverage is not included, as it is tied to the trip interruption benefit this card does not provide.
Baggage delay coverage is not included; expenses for essentials during a baggage delay are not reimbursed.
There is no lost, stolen or damaged baggage coverage on this card.
Common Carrier Accident Insurance pays a lump sum if accidental death or a covered dismemberment results from an accident while you ride a common carrier (bus, train, plane, boat) whose full fare was charged to your Brim Mastercard.
- Loss of life, quadriplegia, paraplegia, hemiplegia, or loss of speech/hearing: $100,000

- Loss or loss of use of one hand/foot, or sight of one eye: $50,000
- Loss of thumb and index finger of the same hand: $25,000
- Covers cardmember, spouse and dependent children when the full fare is charged to the card
- Also covers travel directly to/from the terminal and time in the terminal
- Maximum $300,000 for all losses from any one accident
- Accidental death & dismemberment only — NOT medical insurance
- Sickness, disease or any medical condition
- Self-inflicted injury, suicide, war, criminal acts, drug/alcohol abuse, nuclear hazard
- Acting as a pilot, operator or crew member

Jamie
Outdated claims process
"Their customer service is outdated—I had to dispute a hotel charge and was told to send documentation by snail mail or FAX."
Eric
Rewards nerfed, fx fee added
"The rewards nerf and introduction of a fx fee this summer meant that there is not much reason to keep it around."
Luka
Stripped of its perks
"Horrible credit card and even worse customer service. They removed the whole point of having this card which was the no fx fees and the 2% cashback on Amazon."

Gather your documents
Keep your card statement showing the charge, original itemized receipts, the manufacturer's warranty (for warranty claims), and any police, medical or death-certificate documentation relevant to the loss.
File any primary insurance first
Purchase Security and Mobile Device coverage are excess: if you have homeowner's/tenant's or other applicable insurance, claim there first and provide proof before Brim's coverage pays the balance.

What people ask about the Brim Mastercard
- No. The entry-level Brim Mastercard ($0 annual fee) does not include any out-of-province or out-of-country emergency medical insurance. If you fall ill or are injured while travelling, your emergency hospital and medical bills are not covered by this card. Travel medical coverage only appears on the higher Brim World Mastercard (8 days) and Brim World Elite Mastercard (15 days) tiers. For a trip, you should buy a separate travel medical policy.
- No. There is no trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance on the free Brim Mastercard. If you have to cancel before departure or cut a trip short, your non-refundable prepaid costs and extra return expenses are not reimbursed. These benefits are only on the World and World Elite Brim tiers.
- Five benefits: Common Carrier Accident Insurance (accidental death & dismemberment up to $100,000 while on a common carrier), Purchase Security ($1,000 per item, 90 days), Extended Warranty (doubles the manufacturer's warranty up to +1 year), Mobile Device Insurance (up to $500 CAD with a 10% deductible) and Event Ticket Protector ($1,000 per occurrence). All are underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company of Canada (RSA).
- If the full fare for a bus, train, plane or boat is charged to your Brim Mastercard and you suffer accidental death or a covered dismemberment while riding that common carrier (or travelling directly to/from the terminal), RSA pays a lump sum — $100,000 for loss of life, paralysis or loss of speech/hearing, down to $25,000 for loss of a thumb and index finger. The maximum for any single accident is $300,000. This is accident coverage only — it pays nothing for illness or ordinary injury.
- Up to $500 CAD per claim, provided the device's full price was charged to the card. A 10% deductible applies and the payout is based on the depreciated value (2% per month from the purchase date), so the real reimbursement is usually well below $500. Coverage starts 90 days after purchase and runs up to two years, limited to one claim per 12 months.
- No. The free tier provides no rental car collision/loss damage waiver (CDW) and no rental liability coverage. You must rely on the rental agency's own coverage or your personal auto insurance. Rental CDW is only available on the Brim World and World Elite tiers.
- All Brim Mastercard insurance is underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company of Canada (RSA), with claims administered by Global Excel Management Inc. To start a claim or confirm coverage, call 1-833-429-2746 toll-free from Canada or the U.S., or +416-920-0938 collect from elsewhere in the world. Event-ticket losses must be reported within 24 hours.
- Yes. Because the free Brim Mastercard has no emergency medical, no trip cancellation/interruption and no baggage or flight-delay coverage, it should not be relied on as travel insurance. For any trip, compare and buy a standalone travel insurance policy that includes emergency medical and cancellation cover.
