Capped at $5,000 per trip for everyone travelling together, this covers prepaid non-refundable travel and accommodation if the journey is cancelled, rescheduled or shortened for reasons outside your control. Lost frequent flyer points and reasonable rescheduling costs count towards the same limit, with travel agent fees capped at $500. Cover starts as soon as you spend $500 of prepaid travel costs on the card, and a $200 excess applies.
Kiwibank Platinum Visa: what does its complimentary travel insurance actually cover?
Kiwibank·$50/year·Visa Platinum·Tower Limited (managed by Allianz Partners)

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Kiwibank Platinum Visa
$40 million of overseas medical. A 40-day trip cap. So, you're in a clinic in Bali and the front desk asks who's paying: with the Kiwibank Platinum Visa travel insurance, the answer is Tower, through Allianz Partners, up to $40,000,000 of medical and repatriation costs after a $200 excess (the first slice of each claim you pay yourself). Most cardholders assume holding the card is enough. It isn't: the policy wording (the insurer's full policy document for the card's cover) only switches cover on once you spend at least $500 of prepaid travel costs on the card within 12 months of departure. The kicker: every limit is shared by everyone on the trip, so two adults and two children split one $5,000 cancellation cap, and cover ends at 11:59pm New Zealand time on day 40 unless you paid to extend it before leaving. ACC and the public health system pay nothing overseas, so if you are 75 or older, or away for more than 40 days, a standalone New Zealand travel policy closes the gap; for a short trip under 75, this cover is probably enough.
- $40,000,000 overseas medical and repatriation for travellers under 75, $200 excess per event
- Cancellation and additional expenses respond to an epidemic or pandemic diagnosis, and overseas medical treats it like any other illness
- Travel delay pays from 6 hours: $500 per block, up to $2,500, with no excess
- $30,000 baggage limit with $2,500 per item and $5,000 for computers and cameras
- Trips within New Zealand covered too: $5,000 cancellation and $2,500 travel delay once $250 goes on the card
- 40-day cap: cover ends on day 40 of a trip unless an extension is bought before departure
- Limits are shared by the whole family: one $5,000 cancellation cap for everyone on the trip
- No automatic medical cover from age 75: a medical assessment and a premium are needed
- Pre-existing medical conditions excluded unless assessed and accepted before you leave
- No loss of income cover after an injury overseas
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What cardholders say about the Kiwibank Platinum Visa
Real experiences on travel cover and claims 3 reviews

Two claims handled well
We've used the Kiwibank Credit Card policy backed by Tower a number of times. Once for baggage delays and another for rental car excess. They we're pretty good dealing with it both times. We missed out on another claim as we were below the excess.
nova (Geekzone)
Medical is fine, cancellation is thin
With the Kiwibank credit card insurance, most limits are still ok. $40 million for medical cover is still pretty good, even if divided by four. But section one, for Cancellation & Travel Disruption Benefits, is quite weak. $5000 is pretty meagre for one person, let alone four.
MartinGZ (Geekzone)
Every limit is shared by the family
The CC policy max claim amounts are typically the total aggregate amount for all travellers for all claims during the travel period. Most other policies are per traveller, effectively doubling the available cover for a couple. For a family of 4, well.....

How to make a Kiwibank Platinum Visa claim
Step 1: Call the 24/7 emergency line before treatment where possible
If you are hurt or ill overseas, call Allianz Partners Emergency Assistance collect on +64 9 486 6868 before you are admitted or treated. The policy wording lets the insurer decline or reduce a claim when prior approval for hospitalisation was not sought and it was possible. Report lost or stolen items to the police, or to the airline or hotel, and get a written report.
Step 2: Lodge the claim with proof you spent $500 on the card
Lodge online at claimmanager.co.nz, using the first 6 and last 4 digits of your card as the policy number, or call 0800 876 541 or email claims@allianz-assistance.co.nz. Tell them as soon as possible: a late notice can reduce the payout. Include itemised bills, receipts, any police or airline report, and the card statement showing at least $500 of prepaid travel costs ($250 for a trip within New Zealand) went on the Platinum Visa within 12 months of departure. A $200 excess comes off most claims, but not travel delay or emergency baggage.
Step 3: If the insurer says no, take it to the IFSO Scheme
Start with Allianz Partners' internal dispute process on 0800 600 711 or DisputeResolution@allianz-assistance.co.nz. If you reach deadlock, or no decision arrives in the time promised, the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO Scheme) reviews the complaint for free, usually within 3 months of deadlock, and can award up to $500,000 + GST.
What people ask about the Kiwibank Platinum Visa
- You activate it by spending at least $500 on prepaid travel costs for an overseas trip with the Kiwibank Platinum Visa, or at least $250 for a trip within New Zealand, and the purchase must fall within 12 months before you leave. Prepaid travel costs include air tickets, other transport, accommodation, car hire, tours, cruises and taxes. Holding the card is not enough, and a payment made 13 months out does not count. You also need to live in New Zealand, be a citizen or resident, hold a return ticket and keep the card open for the whole trip. There is no registration step: once both conditions are met the cover is automatic, and you only call Allianz Partners on 0800 876 541 to get a medical condition assessed.
- The cardholder is covered, including joint or additional cardholders, and so is a spouse, de facto or civil union partner who travels with them. Dependent children are covered when they travel with you and are under 19 and not in full-time work, or under 26 if they are full-time students who rely on you for support. Family members must also live in New Zealand as citizens or residents and hold a return ticket. The catch is the limits: every maximum applies once per trip, whoever is travelling. A family of four shares one $5,000 cancellation limit, one $30,000 baggage limit and one $40,000,000 medical limit.
- Yes, up to $6,000 for a hire vehicle rented on an overseas trip. It reimburses the excess the rental company charges you after damage or theft, so it is an excess-reimbursement benefit and not a damage waiver, and the policy's own $200 excess comes off the payout. You must have been the driver (or had the vehicle in your custody if it was stolen), rented from a licensed rental agency, kept to the licence rules and the rental agreement, and had the claim accepted by the vehicle's insurer. Campervans and motorhomes up to 4.5 tonnes count. A hire car on a trip within New Zealand is not covered.
- Claims go to Allianz Partners, which manages the policy for the underwriter Tower: lodge online at claimmanager.co.nz using the first 6 and last 4 digits of your card as the policy number, call 0800 876 541 on weekdays or email claims@allianz-assistance.co.nz. Tell them as soon as possible, because a late notice can reduce the payout. Send itemised bills, receipts, any police or airline report, and the card statement showing at least $500 of prepaid travel costs went on the card. If you disagree with the outcome, use Allianz Partners' dispute process on 0800 600 711 first, then take it to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO Scheme), a free independent service, usually within 3 months of reaching deadlock. It can award up to $500,000 + GST.
- Five traps catch people. If less than $500 of prepaid travel costs went on the card in the 12 months before departure, there is no cover at all. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded unless Allianz Partners assesses and accepts them before you leave, sometimes for a premium. Cover ends at 11:59pm New Zealand time on day 40 of a trip, return flight included, unless you paid to extend it before departure. From age 75 there is no automatic medical cover, nor cancellation cover for your own medical reasons. And there is nothing for loss of income, skiing outside resort boundaries, general lockdowns, insolvent airlines or tour operators, or a hire car on a trip within New Zealand.
- The policy wording does not name COVID-19, but it covers epidemic and pandemic diseases in its cancellation, additional expenses and medical sections. If you or your travelling companion are diagnosed and can't start or finish the trip, or the New Zealand Government orders you into isolation because it suspects you were exposed, cancellation (up to $5,000) and additional expenses (up to $50,000) apply. Overseas medical treatment is paid like any other illness under the $40,000,000 benefit. Being denied boarding on suspicion of an epidemic disease pays up to $500 a day, $3,000 in total. It pays nothing for lockdowns, alert level changes or quarantine rules that apply to a whole population, a ship or a destination.
- Yes, but only for two benefits. A trip within New Zealand gets cancellation cover up to $5,000 and travel delay cover of $500 per block after 6 hours, up to $2,500, as long as you spent at least $250 of prepaid travel costs for that trip on the card within 12 months of departure. There is no domestic medical cover, which is normal because ACC and the public health system cover treatment at home. Baggage, rental vehicle excess, personal liability and accidental death only apply overseas, so a stolen bag or a dented hire car on a Queenstown weekend is not covered by the card.
- Yes, inside ski resort boundaries and without a paid extension: the policy wording only excludes skiing and snowboarding outside resort boundaries, so a fall on a marked run overseas is paid under the $40,000,000 medical benefit for travellers under 75, after a $200 excess. Going off-piste is excluded, and so is an injury where you ignored safety warnings or skipped protective gear such as a helmet. Your own skis and snowboard are only covered if a commercial carrier damages them in transit or they are burnt or stolen from locked accommodation, never while in use. Hired gear and unused lift passes are not covered.
- For a trip of up to 40 days, under 75 and without a medical condition, the card's cover is probably enough on the medical side: $40,000,000 of overseas medical and repatriation is a high limit. Three situations change that. A trip longer than 40 days has no cover after day 40 unless you pay Allianz Partners to extend it, up to 120 days in total. Travellers aged 75 or over get no automatic medical cover. And the limits are shared by everyone on the trip, so a family's prepaid flights can easily exceed the $5,000 cancellation cap. In any of those cases, a standalone travel policy closes the gap.
- Only the Kiwibank Platinum Visa. The same Tower policy also covered the Air New Zealand Airpoints Platinum Visa, but Kiwibank stopped selling its Airpoints cards on 27 May 2025 and the partnership ended on 1 November 2025, when Airpoints cardholders were moved to the Platinum Visa. The Zero Visa has no complimentary travel insurance, and neither does the Visa Debit card. On the Platinum Visa, the account fee is $50 a year, charged as $25 every six months, and the cover switches on once you spend at least $500 of prepaid travel costs on the card for an overseas trip.
