Our take on travel insurance for the ANZ Airpoints Visa Platinum

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Unlimited overseas medical. Half the trip must go on the card. So, you're in a clinic in Bali and the front desk asks who's paying: with the ANZ Visa Platinum travel insurance, the answer is Mitsui Sumitomo, through Allianz Partners, with no dollar cap on medical and repatriation costs for travellers under 75 and a $200 excess (the first slice of each claim you pay yourself). Most cardholders assume holding the card is enough. It isn't: the policy wording (the insurer's full policy document for the card's cover) only switches cover on when at least 50% of your prepaid travel costs go on the card, and on an Airpoints redemption that means 50% of the accommodation or other itinerary items. The kicker: a journey longer than 90 days has no cover at all, not even for its first 90 days, and from age 75 there is no automatic medical cover. ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing overseas, so if you are 75 or older or planning a long OE, a standalone New Zealand travel policy is the safer choice; if you are under 75 and pay for the trip on the card, this cover is probably enough.

What works on travel
  • Unlimited overseas medical and repatriation for travellers under 75, $200 excess per event
  • Cancellation and additional expenses with no dollar cap, extended to a diagnosed epidemic or pandemic illness
  • Travel delay pays from 6 hours: $250 per adult per block, up to $15,000
  • $30,000 baggage limit per adult, $2,000 per item and $5,000 for laptops and cameras
  • Loss of income up to $1,000 a week, $12,000 maximum, if an overseas injury keeps you off work
Where travel breaks down
  • Half the trip on the card: cover only starts when at least 50% of prepaid travel costs are charged to it
  • 90-day cap: a 91-day journey has no cover at all unless an extension is bought before departure
  • No automatic medical cover from age 75: a medical assessment and a premium are needed
  • Pre-existing medical conditions excluded unless assessed and accepted before you leave
  • No cover for trips within New Zealand

How to make an Airpoints Visa Platinum claim

1

Step 1: Call the 24/7 emergency line before treatment where possible

If you are hurt or ill overseas, call Allianz Partners Emergency Assistance collect on +61 7 3305 7194 before you are admitted or treated. The policy wording says a claim can be declined if prior approval for hospitalisation was not sought when it was possible. Report lost or stolen items to the police, or to the airline, and get a written report.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim with proof you met the activation rule

Lodge online at claimmanager.co.nz, call 0800 499 666 (+64 9 487 0823 from overseas) or email anzcardclaims@allianz-assistance.co.nz, and send full details in writing within 30 days of getting home. Include itemised bills, receipts, any police or airline report, and the card statement showing at least 50% of your prepaid travel costs went on the Airpoints Visa Platinum. A $200 excess comes off medical, additional expenses and baggage claims.

3

Step 3: If the insurer says no, take it to the IFSO Scheme

Start with Allianz Partners' internal dispute process on 0800 499 666 or DisputeResolution@allianzassistance.co.nz. If you reach deadlock, the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO Scheme) reviews the complaint for free, usually within 3 months of deadlock, and can award up to $500,000 + GST.

FAQ

What people ask about the ANZ Airpoints Visa Platinum

  • You activate it by paying for at least 50% of your prepaid travel costs with the Airpoints Visa Platinum, and prepaid costs include air tickets, accommodation, car hire, tours, cruises and taxes. Holding the card is not enough. If the trip is booked with Airpoints Dollars or other points, at least 50% of your prepaid accommodation or other itinerary items must go on the card instead, and if the card isn't accepted or carries a surcharge, another ANZ account can be used. You also need to live in New Zealand, be a citizen or resident, and hold a return ticket within 90 days before you leave. There is no registration step: checkyourcover.co.nz only confirms you qualify.
  • The cardholder is covered, including additional cardholders on the same account, and so is a spouse, de facto or civil union partner travelling with them. Dependent children are covered when they travel with you, are under 19 and not in full-time work, or under 26 if they are full-time students who rely on you for support. The catch is the limits: children share the limits of the adult they travel with. One adult and two children get one $30,000 baggage limit between them, not three, while two adults travelling with two children get $60,000.
  • Yes, up to $6,000 for a hire car rented overseas. It reimburses the excess the rental company charges you after damage or theft, so it is an excess-reimbursement benefit and not a damage waiver. You must have been the driver (or had the car in your custody if it was stolen), rented from a licensed rental agency, kept to the rental agreement, and had the claim accepted by the vehicle's insurer. Campervans up to 4.5 tonnes count. Hires inside New Zealand are not covered unless they are part of an overseas trip's itinerary.
  • Claims on the ANZ platinum credit card travel insurance go to Allianz Partners, which manages the policy for the underwriter Mitsui Sumitomo: lodge online at claimmanager.co.nz, call 0800 499 666 or email anzcardclaims@allianz-assistance.co.nz. Tell them as soon as possible, and submit full details in writing within 30 days of getting home, with itemised bills, any police or airline report, and proof that at least 50% of your prepaid travel costs went on the card. A $200 excess comes off medical, additional expenses and baggage claims. If you disagree with the outcome, use Allianz Partners' internal dispute process first, then take it to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO Scheme), a free independent service, usually within 3 months of reaching deadlock. It can award up to $500,000 + GST.
  • The cover is strong, but five traps catch people. If less than 50% of your prepaid travel costs went on the card, there is no cover at all. Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered unless Allianz Partners assesses and accepts them before you leave. A trip longer than 90 days is not covered even for its first 90 days, unless an extension is agreed and paid for before departure. From age 75 there is no automatic medical cover. And trips within New Zealand, skiing outside resort boundaries and claims from general lockdowns or quarantine rules are excluded.
  • Yes, through its Epidemics and Pandemics benefit (section 1.5), although the policy wording never names COVID-19: it applies to any disease the World Health Organization or a government authority recognises as an epidemic or pandemic. If you or your travelling companion are diagnosed and can't start or finish the trip, the cancellation and additional expenses cover applies, and overseas medical treatment is carved back in too. Allianz Partners' own FAQ confirms cover for a positive COVID-19 test abroad, with a supervised RAT or PCR result or a doctor's certificate as proof. A New Zealand Government quarantine order on you personally pays $200 a day, up to $1,400 per adult. Lockdowns or isolation rules that apply to a whole population, ship or destination pay nothing.
  • Yes, inside ski resort boundaries: skiing and snowboarding on marked runs are not excluded, so the unlimited overseas medical cover applies to a fall, for travellers under 75, after a $200 excess. Going outside resort boundaries is excluded, Allianz Partners treats heli-skiing and snowcat skiing as excluded extreme sports, and any injury where you ignored safety warnings or skipped protective gear is not paid. Your own skis and snowboards are a weak spot: the baggage cover only pays for them if they are damaged in transit with a commercial carrier, or burnt or stolen from locked accommodation. There is no benefit for hired ski gear or an unused lift pass.
  • No, not automatically. The policy wording excludes any condition you knew about, and any condition you saw a doctor about or took medication for in the 12 months before you activated cover. You can ask Allianz Partners for a medical assessment on 0800 499 666 before the journey starts, and if they accept the condition you may have to pay a premium. Some conditions can never be covered, such as one with surgery planned or still under investigation. Skip the assessment and a claim linked to that condition is declined, even if the rest of the trip was covered.
  • Yes, with no dollar cap for travellers under 75: medical and repatriation expenses are listed as Unlimited, and emergency dental treatment too. That matters because ACC and New Zealand's public health system do not pay for treatment overseas, and a few nights in a Honolulu hospital can run to six figures. A $200 excess applies to medical claims, and costs must be reasonable. From age 75 there is no automatic medical cover, though you can apply to Allianz Partners for it before you go. Medical costs caused by a terrorist act are capped at $250,000.
  • Six hours. If circumstances outside your control delay your journey by at least six hours, the Airpoints Visa Platinum reimburses reasonable extra meals and accommodation up to $250 per adult for that first block. It then pays up to $250 per adult for each further full 24 hours of delay, with a $15,000 maximum. Keep receipts and written confirmation of the delay from the airline, because the claim needs both. The delay benefit cannot be claimed on top of cancellation or additional expenses for the same event, so pick the section that pays the most.
