Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Grab GrabPay Card
Charge a flight to the GrabPay Card and nothing insurance-related switches on. The GrabPay Card is a prepaid Mastercard from Grab built for everyday spending and top-ups, not an insurance product, so it carries no complimentary travel insurance. The card covers no overseas medical treatment, no trip cancellation and no lost baggage, whatever you pay for on it. A serious hospital admission abroad can pass S$100,000, and MediShield Life, the national health scheme, pays nothing outside Singapore, so a bad admission in the US or Europe lands entirely on you. Searching for grabpay card travel insurance ends here: the card gives none. A standalone Singapore travel policy fills that gap from about S$20 a trip, covering the hospital bills, cancellations and bags the card leaves out.
- No complimentary travel insurance: the card is prepaid, so charging a flight to it activates no medical, cancellation or baggage cover
- No overseas medical or evacuation cover: a serious hospital bill abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover, is entirely on you
- No trip cancellation or baggage cover: a cancelled flight or a lost bag is your cost, not the card's
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What cardholders say about the Grab GrabPay Card

A go for the double dip
Go. I only just started using Grabpay Mastercard and I am all for it. The reason is you can easily double dip it. First dip is using your CC to topup Grabpay (but take note, there are some credit cards that have excluded GrabPay top up. The best now is UOB One Card). Then, use your GPMC for all purchases. You will get Grab points as well which you can offset for ride vouchers!
John Smiths (Seedly)
Useful for double dipping
Useful if you can double dip with the UOB One credit card. Makes your GrabPay balance more liquid and easier to spend.
Cedric Jamie Soh (Seedly)
Numberless design and bonus points
GrayPay Mastercard is a great add on. 1. great numberless design, it looks pleasant and refreshing 2. Extra bonus points- You earn CC points with your existing creditcard to top up your GrabPay (best card is UOB One) 3. Then when you use GrabPay, you earn grab reward points. 4. Win - win for all
How to contact Grab GrabPay Card assistance?
This card carries no complimentary travel insurance, so there is no underwriter or 24-hour assistance hotline attached to it. For medical, cancellation and baggage cover overseas, buy a standalone Singapore travel policy and keep its emergency assistance number with you while you travel.
What to do if you need travel cover with the GrabPay Card
Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy before you fly
Because the card includes no travel insurance, arrange a standalone Singapore travel policy that states its overseas medical, cancellation and baggage limits in writing. Cover starts from around S$20 for a single trip.
Step 2: Keep your policy and emergency number with you
Save your travel insurer's 24-hour emergency assistance number and policy number on your phone, and keep receipts, medical reports and any police or airline reports to support a claim.
Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC for a card-issuer dispute
For a dispute with the card issuer itself, not travel insurance, you can approach FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, free of charge within 6 months of the issuer's final reply.
What people ask about the Grab GrabPay Card
- No. The GrabPay Card is a prepaid Mastercard from Grab, and it comes with no complimentary travel insurance at all. Charging a flight or a hotel to it does not switch on medical, cancellation or baggage cover, because there is no insurance certificate attached to the card. It is a payment card funded by your GrabPay balance, built to spend that balance anywhere Mastercard is accepted, not to insure your trip. If you want protection for an overseas trip, you need to arrange it separately with a standalone Singapore travel policy. Do not assume the card covers you the way a credit card with a complimentary certificate might, because it does not.
- On the card itself, none. The GrabPay Card is built to spend your GrabPay balance at the checkout and earn GrabRewards points, not to insure your trip. It carries no overseas medical cover, no emergency evacuation, no trip cancellation, no travel delay benefit and no baggage cover. The card is numberless, which helps keep your details private, and you can freeze it in the Grab app if it is lost, but that is card security rather than travel insurance. For hospital bills, cancelled flights or lost bags, you need a standalone travel policy. Treat the card as a payment tool and arrange the cover elsewhere.
- Yes, almost certainly. Because the GrabPay Card includes no travel insurance of its own, an overseas trip on this card alone leaves you exposed to the big costs. MediShield Life, the national health scheme, does not cover you outside Singapore, and one serious hospital admission abroad can run past S$100,000, with an air ambulance home from the region costing S$50,000 to S$120,000. A standalone Singapore travel policy fills those gaps from about S$20 for a single trip, and usually covers medical treatment, trip cancellation, baggage and COVID-19 too. Buy the policy before you fly, and keep the GrabPay Card for what it is good at, which is paying.
- No. The GrabPay Card has no travel insurance, so it covers nothing related to COVID-19 overseas: not medical treatment, not quarantine costs, not a trip you cancel because you test positive. There is no certificate to read and no benefit to activate, because the card is a prepaid payment card rather than an insurance product. If COVID-19 cover matters for your trip, you need a separate policy that names it. Many standalone Singapore travel policies now include COVID-19 medical treatment and trip cancellation, so check the wording before you buy. The card by itself gives you no COVID-19 protection whatsoever.
- No. The GrabPay Card does not include mobile phone insurance, and it carries no purchase protection or extended warranty either. If your phone screen cracks or the handset is stolen after you paid with the card, the repair or replacement is entirely your cost, and a flagship phone runs S$1,200 to S$2,300 to replace. This is a prepaid spending card, so it has no shopping-protection benefits built in. For device cover you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a card that specifically offers phone protection. Do not count on the GrabPay Card to step in if your phone is damaged or lost.
- For spending, it is handy; for protection, no. The GrabPay Card lets you spend your GrabPay balance anywhere Mastercard is accepted and earn GrabRewards points, which is why many Singapore travellers keep it in their wallet. What it does not do is insure the trip. If a flight is cancelled, a bag goes missing, or you land in a foreign hospital, the card pays nothing toward those costs, and it charges a foreign-currency fee on overseas spending too. The sensible setup is to use the GrabPay Card for payments and pair it with a standalone travel policy, from about S$20 a trip, that covers medical, cancellation and baggage. Bring the card for convenience, and bring insurance for the risks.
