Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Standard Chartered Smart Card
The Standard Chartered Smart Card is an entry-level cashback card built for fast food, transport and subscriptions, and it carries no complimentary travel insurance. Charging a flight to it activates nothing. A serious overseas hospital admission can pass S$100,000, and MediShield Life pays nothing for treatment outside Singapore, so that bill lands entirely on you. There is no trip cancellation, no baggage cover and no emergency evacuation attached to the card. A standalone Singapore travel policy fills the gap from about S$20 for a single trip and covers medical, cancellation and baggage. You keep using the card for cashback and simply buy the travel cover separately.
- No complimentary travel insurance: overseas medical, cancellation and baggage are all uninsured
- No overseas hospital cover: a major admission abroad can pass S$100,000, none paid by MediShield Life
- Charging your air fare to the card activates no policy, because the card includes none

Seri Atika (Seedly)
6% cashback on MRT and bus, no minimum spend
Got this card to use for public transport MRT and bus for the 6% cashback. It was easy to sign up. Got $250 cashback with no minimum spend with card activation.
Joseph Rew (Seedly)
Watch out, they nerfed it
Do note they are changing things next year: Increased cashback to 8/10% and more merchants in categories BUT Added minimum spending of $800/mth (Still get 4% <$800/mth until March 2025, after which it'll be 0.5%) Added Annual Fee $91 (Applies from Dec 2025)

Points expire 3 years after card approval
A pretty fuss free card for limited merchants. Good sign up bonus but however people have to take note that the points expire 3 years after the initial approval of the card. This is true even for points attained a few months before the 3 year mark.
How to contact Standard Chartered Smart Card assistance?
This card carries no complimentary travel insurance, so there is no underwriter or 24-hour assistance hotline attached to it. For medical, cancellation and baggage cover overseas, buy a standalone Singapore travel policy and keep its emergency assistance number with you while you travel.
What to do if you need travel cover with the Smart Card
Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy before you fly
Because the card includes no travel insurance, arrange a standalone Singapore travel policy that states its overseas medical, cancellation and baggage limits in writing. Cover starts from around S$20 for a single trip.
Step 2: Keep your policy and emergency number with you
Save your travel insurer's 24-hour emergency assistance number and policy number on your phone, and keep receipts, medical reports and any police or airline reports to support a claim.
Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC for a card-issuer dispute
For a dispute with the card issuer itself, not travel insurance, you can approach FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, free of charge within 6 months of the issuer's final reply.
What people ask about the Standard Chartered Smart Card
- No. The Standard Chartered Smart Card is an entry-level cashback card built for fast food, transport and subscriptions, and it carries no complimentary travel insurance. Charging your flights or hotels to it activates nothing, because there is no policy attached to the card. That is normal for a no-annual-fee cashback card in Singapore, where travel cover tends to sit on premium or travel-focused cards. If you want protection for overseas medical bills, trip cancellation or lost baggage, you need a separate travel insurance policy. A standalone Singapore travel plan starts from about S$20 for a single trip and pays out regardless of which card you used to book.
- None. The SC Smart Card is a payment and cashback card, so it offers no travel protection of any kind. There is no overseas medical cover, no emergency evacuation, no trip cancellation, no travel delay benefit and no baggage cover. If your flight is delayed, your bag goes missing or you fall ill abroad, the card pays nothing towards those costs. MediShield Life, Singapore's national health insurance, also pays nothing for treatment received outside Singapore, so there is no fallback there either. For any of this protection you need a standalone travel insurance policy, which you can buy for a single trip or as an annual plan covering every trip in the year.
- Yes. Because the SC Smart Card includes no travel cover at all, you should buy a separate travel insurance policy for any trip outside Singapore. This matters most for medical costs: MediShield Life does not cover treatment overseas, and a serious hospital admission in the United States or Europe can pass S$100,000. A standalone policy covers overseas medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, travel delay and lost baggage in one plan. Single-trip cover starts from about S$20, while an annual multi-trip plan suits frequent travellers. You can keep using the Smart Card to earn cashback on your bookings and simply pair it with a travel policy bought separately.
- No. The SC Smart Card provides no overseas medical cover, so it pays nothing towards COVID-19 treatment abroad, whether that is a GP visit, a hospital stay or the cost of extending your trip while you recover. MediShield Life does not cover medical treatment outside Singapore either, including COVID-19, so you cannot fall back on it. Many standalone Singapore travel policies now include COVID-19 medical cover and some add trip cancellation if you test positive before departure, though terms vary by insurer. If COVID-19 protection matters for your trip, check the policy wording before buying and confirm the medical limit is high enough for your destination. The card itself gives you none of this.
- No. The SC Smart Card does not include mobile phone insurance, so theft or accidental damage to your phone is not covered by the card. If your handset is stolen a week after you buy it, the card pays nothing towards a replacement, and replacing a flagship smartphone out of pocket costs S$1,200 to S$2,300. Mobile phone cover is uncommon on no-annual-fee cashback cards in Singapore and tends to appear on selected premium cards instead. If phone protection matters to you, look at a dedicated gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a home contents plan that extends to portable items. The Smart Card is built for cashback, not for insuring your purchases.
- No, not for protection. The SC Smart Card is fine for spending and earning cashback on your trip, but it insures nothing, so on its own it is not enough for travelling overseas. The gap that matters most is medical: MediShield Life does not cover treatment outside Singapore, and a serious overseas hospital admission can pass S$100,000, which would land entirely on you. To travel with proper cover, pair the card with a standalone Singapore travel policy from about S$20 a trip. That plan handles overseas medical treatment, emergency evacuation, cancellation and baggage, while you keep using the Smart Card to earn cashback on flights, hotels and meals.
