Our take on travel insurance for the Standard Chartered Journey

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The Standard Chartered Journey travel insurance is thin: a S$500,000 personal accident sum plus up to S$25,000 of emergency evacuation and repatriation, and nothing else. Personal accident means a lump sum paid if an accident causes your death or permanent disablement, and here it applies only to an accident on a common carrier, a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to ride overseas. There is no overseas medical treatment cover, no trip cancellation and no baggage cover at all. So if you are admitted to a hospital abroad, which MediShield Life does not pay for outside Singapore, that bill is essentially on you, and even the S$25,000 evacuation cap is low for a serious air-ambulance case that can run past S$100,000. The cover switches on only when the trip or travel-package fare is charged to the Standard Chartered card. Treat it as a small top-up, not a real policy, and pair it with a standalone Singapore travel plan that starts from about S$20 a trip and pays the medical, cancellation and baggage costs this card leaves out.

What works on travel
  • S$500,000 personal accident lump sum for accidental death or permanent disablement on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus
  • Up to S$25,000 for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, arranged by the Allianz Travel 24-hour assistance line
  • COVID-19 evacuation is included within that S$25,000, and cover runs worldwide for up to 90 consecutive days
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas medical treatment cover: an overseas hospital bill is entirely on you, and MediShield Life does not pay abroad
  • The S$25,000 evacuation cap is low: an air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore can run S$50,000 to S$120,000
  • No trip cancellation and no baggage cover, so cancelled flights, lost bags and delays are not reimbursed
  • Cover only activates when the trip or travel-package fare is charged to the Standard Chartered Journey card

What does Standard Chartered Journey Travel Insurance actually cover?

The S$500,000 is a personal-accident sum for accidental death or permanent disablement, not an overseas medical-treatment limit.

Deductible : No deductible

Personal accident cover is a lump sum paid if an accident causes your death or permanent disablement, such as the loss of a limb or sight. The Standard Chartered Journey pays up to S$500,000, but only for an accident on a common carrier, meaning a scheduled flight, ferry, train, bus or licensed taxi you paid to ride overseas, not a general travel accident like a fall in your hotel. It covers the cardholder up to 80 years old, and the death or disablement must occur within 180 days of the accident. The full trip or travel-package fare must be charged to the card for cover to apply.

Recommended : $1,000,000

What's covered
  • Accidental death or permanent disablement on a scheduled common carrier overseas
  • Loss of limbs or loss of sight
  • Cardholder up to 80 years old at the start of the trip
What's not covered
  • War, terrorism, nuclear and radioactive events
  • Suicide, self-inflicted injury, criminal acts, intoxication
  • Pre-existing conditions, pregnancy, epidemic or pandemic disease (except evacuation)

No overseas emergency medical cover. This benefit is not included with this card. All medical costs overseas are the cardholder's responsibility. MediShield Life does not cover you outside Singapore, and a serious hospital admission in the US or Europe can run S$100,000 or more.

What's not covered
  • Overseas medical treatment is not a benefit of this card
  • Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy excluded
This benefit pays evacuation and repatriation transport, not open-ended overseas medical treatment, and S$25,000 is modest for a serious case.

Deductible : No deductible

This is the only medical-related benefit on the card: up to S$25,000 to arrange and pay for emergency evacuation to the nearest suitable hospital and repatriation back to Singapore, coordinated by the Allianz Travel 24-hour assistance line. It pays the transport, not the hospital treatment itself, and there is no general overseas medical benefit behind it. Evacuation for a COVID-19 illness overseas is included within this S$25,000. The cap is modest: an air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok can cost S$50,000 to S$120,000, more than this benefit pays.

What's covered
  • Emergency medical evacuation to the nearest suitable hospital
  • Repatriation to Singapore, including repatriation of remains
  • Evacuation for a COVID-19 illness overseas
What's not covered
  • Hospital and physician treatment fees
  • Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy
  • Costs incurred in Singapore, or transport not approved by Allianz Travel

How to make a Standard Chartered Journey travel insurance claim

1

Step 1: Notify Allianz as soon as possible

Start your claim with Allianz within the notice period in the certificate, commonly 30 days of the incident. Only expenses charged to the Standard Chartered Journey can be reimbursed where the benefit requires the fare to be charged to the card.

2

Step 2: Gather the proof Allianz needs

Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, your boarding passes, and for a medical claim the doctor's report and receipts. For delayed or lost baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before leaving the airport; for theft, file a police report within 24 hours.

3

Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC if a fair claim is denied

If Allianz rejects a claim you believe is valid, escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply. FIDReC independently mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.

FAQ

What people ask about the Standard Chartered Journey

  • The travel cover on the Standard Chartered Journey switches on when the cost of your trip is charged to the card: the policy requires 100% of the travel conveyance fare, or the full cost of a travel package, to be paid with the Journey card, and the card must be valid when you travel. Holding the card is not enough. If you book a flight on miles and only the airport taxes hit the card, that may not meet the full-fare condition, so check before you rely on it. There is no separate opt-in form for this card, unlike some other issuers. Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, because that is what the insurer checks at claim time.
  • Cover applies to the eligible Standard Chartered Journey cardholder, up to 80 years old at the start of the trip. Unlike some family-style card policies, this is an individual cardholder benefit: there is no separate spouse or child sum insured written into the benefit table. The S$500,000 personal accident sum and the S$25,000 evacuation benefit are per insured person, subject to a S$10,000,000 conveyance limit across everyone on the same vehicle. If you need your spouse or children covered for medical, cancellation or baggage costs, a standalone family travel policy is the safer route. Check the covered-persons definition in the policy wording before you count on it.
  • No. The Standard Chartered Journey has no general overseas medical benefit. Its only medical-related cover is up to S$25,000 for emergency evacuation and repatriation, which pays to transport you to a suitable hospital or home to Singapore, not the hospital treatment bill itself. This matters because MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans do not pay for overseas leisure treatment, so a serious admission in the US or Europe, which can run past S$100,000, would be almost entirely on you. If overseas medical cover matters to you, a standalone travel insurance policy is the way to get it.
  • Only for evacuation. The policy defines a pandemic and expressly includes evacuation and repatriation for an epidemic or pandemic illness such as COVID-19 within the S$25,000 emergency assistance benefit. Outside that, epidemic and pandemic claims are excluded, and because there is no general overseas medical, no trip cancellation and no baggage cover on this card, an ordinary COVID hospital stay or a cancelled trip is not reimbursed. Pre-existing conditions stay excluded too. This position is card-specific, so never assume COVID handling carries from one card to another.
  • The Standard Chartered Journey provides personal accident cover of up to S$500,000, a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent disablement such as the loss of a limb or sight. It applies only to an accident on a common carrier, meaning a scheduled flight, ferry, train, bus or licensed taxi you paid to ride overseas, and the death or disablement must occur within 180 days of the accident. It is not a general overseas medical limit, and the card has no cover for a fall or accident that is not on a scheduled conveyance. The conveyance limit is S$10,000,000 across all insured persons on the same vehicle.
  • Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation is capped at S$25,000 per event on the Standard Chartered Journey, arranged by the Allianz Travel 24-hour assistance line. This pays for the transport to move you to a suitable hospital or back to Singapore, and it includes repatriation of remains, but it does not pay the hospital treatment bill. The cap is modest: an air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore commonly costs S$50,000 to S$120,000, well above this limit. For a serious case you could face a large shortfall, which is why a standalone policy with a higher evacuation limit is worth considering.
  • The cover is underwritten by Allianz Insurance Singapore, with assistance and claims handled by AWP Services Singapore, trading as Allianz Travel. For a medical emergency overseas, call the 24-hour assistance line on +65 6995 1111 before any evacuation is arranged, because unapproved transport is not paid. Give written notice as soon as possible, and within 30 days of the incident, then file your claim at allianz-assistance.com.sg, keeping itemised bills, any police or carrier report, and the card statement showing the fare was charged. General enquiries go to 1 800 222 1818 or scbhelp@allianz.com. If a fair claim is denied and you disagree, you can escalate free to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply.
  • You are covered worldwide for up to 90 consecutive days per trip on the Standard Chartered Journey. Cover begins when you leave your home, hotel or place of business to start the trip and ends when you return, or when the card account is terminated or the benefits are cancelled, whichever comes first. If a single trip runs beyond 90 days, the days past that limit are not covered, so a long sabbatical or extended posting would need a separate long-stay policy. The cover applies only outside Singapore.
  • Almost certainly, yes. The Standard Chartered Journey is a thin accident-led benefit: it pays a S$500,000 personal accident sum and up to S$25,000 of emergency evacuation, but nothing for general overseas medical treatment, trip cancellation or baggage. A single hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover outside Singapore, can run past S$100,000, and the card's evacuation cap is low for a serious case. A standalone Singapore travel policy fills those gaps from around S$20 for a single trip and usually covers COVID-19 medical and cancellation too. Treat the card cover as a small top-up, not a replacement.
  • No. The Standard Chartered Journey does not include mobile phone insurance, and it carries no purchase protection or extended warranty either. If your phone screen cracks or the handset is stolen, the repair or replacement is entirely on you, and a flagship screen repair alone runs about S$200 to S$600. The card's complimentary benefits are limited to overseas travel accident and evacuation cover. For device protection you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a card that specifically offers phone cover.
