Our opinion on Capital One Venture Rewards Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Most people comparing Capital One Venture travel insurance benefits expect trip cancellation, trip delay, and emergency medical, because every major review site describes the World Elite Mastercard version of this card. The Visa Signature version, which Capital One issues to most applicants, has none of those. There is no trip cancellation. There is no trip delay. There is no emergency medical. What you get is $3,000 per trip in Lost Luggage Reimbursement (covering both carry-on and checked bags) and a $250,000 Worldwide Automatic Travel Accident Insurance policy on Common Carrier travel, when the fare is charged to the card. For a $95 annual fee card positioned as a travel rewards card, the protection layer on the Visa Signature version is thin relative to what cardholders expect. Filing any claim goes through Card Benefit Services at eclaimsline.com or 1-800-825-4062. For lost luggage, notify within 20 days of the loss.

What works on travel
  • $3,000 per trip Lost Luggage Reimbursement: covers both carry-on and checked baggage, secondary to airline settlement
  • $250,000 Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance: automatic when the fare is charged to the card, covers cardholder and immediate family members
  • Travel and Emergency Assistance coordination: 24-hour referral line at 1-800-825-4062 for emergencies abroad
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: a $5,000 prepaid trip canceled for illness generates zero reimbursement on the Visa Signature version
  • No trip delay: weather delays, mechanical failures, and missed connections are not covered
  • No baggage delay: if your checked bag arrives 24 hours late, the card pays nothing
  • No emergency medical or dental coverage: hospital bills abroad are entirely the cardholder's responsibility
  • No repatriation: emergency evacuation and transport of remains costs fall entirely on the cardholder
  • Network ambiguity: some cardholders receive World Elite Mastercard (which includes trip cancel); others receive Visa Signature, Capital One does not let applicants choose
  • $250,000 Travel Accident limit: lower than the $1M standard on comparable premium cards

World Elite MC version paid trip cancellation

Got the World Elite MC version and was surprised to find trip cancellation was included. Filed a claim after a family illness and was reimbursed without major issues.

Primary CDW worked abroad

Used the CDW coverage abroad. It worked as primary and saved me from having to file with my personal auto insurance first.

Visa Signature version surprise: zero trip cancel

I thought my Venture had trip cancellation but I have the Visa Signature version, zero coverage for a cancelled trip due to illness. Big surprise at the worst time.

Network ambiguity is frustrating

The ambiguity around which network you'll get is frustrating. Applied for Venture and received Visa Signature with no trip cancel at all, very different from what most review sites describe.

FAQ

What people ask about the Capital One Venture Rewards

  • Most benefits on the Capital One Venture activate automatically when you use the card, no registration or enrollment required. For the Worldwide Travel Accident Insurance, the entire cost of the Common Carrier fare (flight, train, cruise) must be charged to the card. For rental car CDW (collision damage waiver), you must decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and pay for the full rental with the card. For Lost Luggage Reimbursement, either a portion or the entire Common Carrier fare must be charged to the card. Purchase Security and Extended Warranty activate when you buy an eligible item with the card. Keep your billing statement as proof of payment for every claim.
  • You and your immediate family members are covered under most Capital One Venture benefits, including Lost Luggage Reimbursement and Worldwide Travel Accident Insurance. Immediate family members include your spouse or domestic partner and legally dependent children under 18 (or under 25 if enrolled full-time at an accredited university). For Travel and Emergency Assistance Services, your spouse and children under 22 years old are eligible for the referral coordination service. For rental car CDW, you as the primary renter and any additional drivers listed on the rental agreement are covered.
  • The Capital One Venture provides two different levels of CDW (collision damage waiver) depending on where you rent. Within your country of residence, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurer pays first, and the card covers your deductible and any remaining loss. Outside your country of residence, coverage is primary: the card pays first, and you do not need to involve your personal auto insurer. To use either coverage, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and pay for the full rental with the card. Domestic rentals are covered for up to 15 consecutive days. International rentals are covered for up to 31 consecutive days.
  • File most claims through Card Benefit Services at eclaimsline.com or by calling 1-800-825-4062 (outside the US, call collect at 1-804-965-8071). For Lost Luggage, notify the administrator within 20 days of the loss and return your claim form within 90 days. For CDW, report the incident within 45 days and return all documents within 365 days. For Purchase Security or Extended Warranty claims, call 1-844-288-2140 within 60 days of the theft, damage, or product failure. Documentation typically required includes your billing statement, travel itinerary or store receipt, and any police report for theft claims.
  • On the Visa Signature version, the Capital One Venture does not cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, baggage delay, or emergency medical and dental expenses abroad. These are significant gaps for a card marketed as a travel rewards card. Emergency evacuation and repatriation costs are also entirely the cardholder's responsibility. CDW coverage is secondary within the United States, meaning your personal auto insurer pays first. Cell phone protection is not included. The $250,000 Travel Accident Insurance applies only to Common Carrier travel, not to 24-hour coverage. If you have the World Elite Mastercard version of this card, some of these gaps are reduced, check the network printed on your physical card.
  • It depends on which version of the card you received. The Visa Signature version of the Capital One Venture does not include trip cancellation insurance. If your trip is canceled for any reason, including illness, injury, or a family emergency, there is no reimbursement from the card. The World Elite Mastercard version of the Capital One Venture does include trip cancellation coverage up to $1,500 per person, for covered reasons including illness, injury, and death. Capital One assigns the network at its discretion, applicants cannot choose. To verify which version you have, look at the lower-right corner of your physical card: it will say either 'Visa Signature' or 'World Elite Mastercard.'
  • Yes, for any trip with significant prepaid costs or international travel. The Visa Signature version of the Capital One Venture provides no trip cancellation, no trip delay, no baggage delay, and no emergency medical coverage. You carry the full cost of a canceled $3,000 trip, a 12-hour delay, or a $20,000 emergency room visit abroad. Even if you received the World Elite Mastercard version with $1,500 trip cancellation, that cap is low for international trips with airfare and hotels. A standalone travel insurance policy covering $5,000 to $10,000 in cancellation and $100,000 in emergency medical typically costs $60 to $150 per trip.
  • Both, depending on where you rent. Within your country of residence, the Capital One Venture CDW (collision damage waiver) is secondary: your personal auto insurance pays first, and the card covers your deductible and any remaining eligible loss. Outside your country of residence, the CDW becomes primary: the card pays first, with no involvement of your personal auto policy. This means the card is most valuable for international rentals, where you avoid both the daily rental CDW fee and any personal insurance claim. Domestic rental coverage is capped at 15 consecutive days. Decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter to activate either version of the benefit.
