Our Verdict · Travel Insurance

Our take on travel insurance for the Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Capped, not unlimited. No cover at home. Here is what the Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards travel insurance actually pays for. Charge at least $500 of your prepaid trip to the card, hold a return ticket, and the overseas medical benefit runs to $20 million with a $100 excess per claim. That number looks huge, and for a broken leg in Bali it is plenty. The catch sits elsewhere. Most cardholders assume any health issue is covered; pre-existing conditions are excluded outright, with no assessment option to buy cover back. Cancellation is capped at $15,000, below the unlimited cover some Platinum cards carry, and there is no interstate flight cover at all. If you charge every trip to the card and travel in good health, the overseas cover does a real job. If you have a managed condition or want domestic protection, read the exclusions before you rely on it.

What works on travel
  • Overseas emergency medical to $20 million: hospital, treatment and evacuation, $100 excess per claim
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation to $20 million, arranged by the 24/7 Allianz Global Assistance line
  • Cancellation covers all prepaid non-refundable travel up to $15,000, including travel agent fees
  • Cover runs up to 90 days per trip, longer than the 30-day cap on some cards
Where travel breaks down
  • Activation by spend: no cover unless you charged at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return ticket
  • Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded outright, with no assessment option to buy cover back
  • No interstate flight inconvenience cover: cancelled or delayed domestic flights are on you
  • Overseas medical is capped at $20 million, not unlimited, and carries a $100 excess per claim

What does Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards Travel Insurance actually cover?

Cover only applies if the trip was charged to the card. A points booking where only the taxes hit the card may not meet the $500 spend condition, so the cancellation cover may not switch on.

Deductible : A$100

Covers all prepaid non-refundable travel and accommodation if you cancel for an unexpected, covered reason, up to a total of $15,000, with a $1,500 sub-limit on travel agent fees. A $100 excess applies per claim. Covered reasons include your or a travel companion's serious illness, injury or death, a relative's death or hospitalisation, natural disaster, retrenchment and jury duty.

What's covered
  • Your or your travel companion's serious injury, illness or death
  • Death, serious injury or illness of a relative living in Australia
  • Natural disaster at your destination or your home

The $20 million cap is generous, but pre-existing medical conditions are excluded outright with no assessment option, and a $100 excess applies to each claim. Cover only switches on if the trip was charged to the card.

How to make a Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards claim

1

Step 1: Call the 24/7 assistance line before major treatment where you can

For a medical emergency overseas, contact Allianz Global Assistance on +61 7 3305 7499 before you incur major costs. They arrange and guarantee payment for hospital and evacuation, and approval may be needed for the cover to apply.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim and gather your documents

Lodge your International Travel Insurance claim online at claimmanager.com.au, or call 1800 754 190 within Australia, Monday to Friday. Allianz aims to assess within 10 business days of receiving a completed form and all documents. Keep itemised accounts, receipts and any police or property report.

3

Step 3: Prove the trip was charged to the card

Include your card statement showing at least $500 of prepaid travel was charged to the Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards, plus your return ticket. Without proof the trip was charged to the card, the claim can be declined because the cover never activated.

FAQ

What people ask about the Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards

  • The cover switches on when you charge at least $500 of your prepaid overseas travel costs to your Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards and hold a return overseas ticket, before you leave Australia. There is no separate registration step, but holding the card is not enough on its own. You also need to be aged under 81, and the cover lasts up to 90 days per trip. Activation means charging the required trip cost to the card so the policy applies. If you book flights with Qantas Points and only the taxes land on the card, that may not meet the $500 spend condition, so check the PDS before you rely on the cover.
  • Cover extends to the cardholder, their spouse or de facto partner, and dependants who travel with them, when each person's trip is charged to the card. A dependant is generally a child under 25 who is not in full-time employment, or an incapacitated dependant the cardholder supports. Each traveller must have at least $500 of their own prepaid travel charged to the card account, hold a return ticket, and be under 81. Spouses and dependants must travel with the cardholder for at least half of the journey. Always check each person against the eligibility definition in your PDS, since additional cardholders are not automatically covered travellers.
  • It reimburses the rental vehicle excess (the amount the hire company charges you towards damage or theft) up to the lesser of your agreement excess or $3,000, with a $100 excess of its own. It does not waive the damage, so you pay the hire company first and claim it back afterwards. The important limit: this benefit applies to cars hired overseas only. A car hired within Australia is not covered, so an accident on a domestic road trip leaves the full excess with you. To qualify, hire from a licensed company, comply with the rental agreement, and keep the incident report and written confirmation of the amount you owe.
  • Claims go through Allianz Global Assistance, the administrator of Bank Australia's group policy. Lodge your International Travel Insurance claim online at claimmanager.com.au, or call 1800 754 190 within Australia, Monday to Friday. For a medical emergency overseas, call the 24-hour line on +61 7 3305 7499 first, since serious costs need approval. Allianz aims to assess within 10 business days of receiving a completed form and all documents. Keep itemised accounts, receipts, any police or property report, and your card statement showing the trip was charged. Some claims are approved within a few weeks, while others draw repeated document requests, so lodge early and keep everything dated.
  • The biggest gap is activation: if you did not charge at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card and hold a return ticket, there is no cover at all. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded outright, with no assessment option to buy cover back. The card has no interstate flight inconvenience cover, no purchase protection and no extended warranty, so its complimentary insurance is travel only. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, though on-piste skiing is covered. Cover also stops once a single trip runs past 90 days, and travellers aged 81 or over are not eligible.
  • No, the Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards does not include mobile phone insurance. Its complimentary cover is international travel insurance only, with no separate smartphone or screen benefit. If your phone is lost or stolen while travelling, it may fall under the luggage benefit instead, but that is capped at $750 per item for phones and excludes phones left in a vehicle or in checked luggage. A cracked screen at home is not covered at all, and a flagship screen repair typically runs $200 to $600. For dedicated phone cover, a standalone policy or a card that includes it would fill this gap.
  • No, pre-existing medical conditions are not covered by the Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards. The policy excludes any claim arising from a pre-existing condition of you, your travel companion or a relative, and unlike many travel policies there is no auto-covered list and no paid assessment to buy the cover back. A pre-existing condition is broadly defined, and includes ongoing or previously treated illnesses, pregnancy, and conditions treated or reviewed in the past two years. If you have a managed medical condition, a standalone travel insurance policy that assesses and covers it would be the safer option for your trip.
  • On-piste skiing and snowboarding are covered under the overseas travel policy at no extra cost, because they are not listed in the dangerous-activities exclusion. Off-piste skiing, off-piste snowboarding and snowmobiling are excluded, so a claim from skiing outside the marked runs would be declined. Your ski equipment is not separately insured while in use, and sporting equipment in use is not covered, so treat expensive gear as uninsured on the slopes. Cover also needs the trip charged to the card and a return ticket, like every other benefit. For off-piste or backcountry plans, a dedicated snow travel policy is the safer choice.
  • For a short overseas holiday in good health, the Bank Australia Platinum Qantas Rewards can do a real job: overseas emergency medical runs to $20 million and cancellation to $15,000, once you charge $500 of the trip to the card. It falls short in a few areas that matter. Pre-existing conditions are excluded with no assessment, there is no interstate or domestic cover, rental excess applies to overseas hires only, and there is no purchase or phone protection. If you have a medical condition, travel for longer than 90 days, or want domestic and rental cover in Australia, a standalone travel insurance policy would fill those gaps.
