Our take on travel insurance for the ING Orange One Low Rate

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. None at all. The Orange One Low Rate is a low rate card, not a travel card, and it carries no complimentary international or domestic cover. Here's where people get caught: ING does offer complimentary international travel insurance, but only on the Platinum tier you are upgraded to at a credit limit of $6,000 or more. Keep your limit below that and you hold the plain Low Rate, which insures nothing when you travel. Most cardholders assume any ING Orange One comes with the Allianz cover. It doesn't. A serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000, and Medicare pays none of it outside Australia. If you travel even once a year, a standalone travel insurance policy is not a nice-to-have here, it is the entire cover.

What works on travel
  • No ING international transaction fees: spending overseas or online in a foreign currency carries no ING surcharge
  • Visa acceptance and payWave work the same abroad as they do at home
Where travel breaks down
  • No complimentary travel insurance: no overseas medical, cancellation, delay or baggage cover of any kind
  • No emergency evacuation: an air ambulance from Southeast Asia to Australia, $60,000 to $100,000, is entirely on you
  • Cover lives on the Platinum tier only: you need a $6,000 credit limit to be upgraded to the Low Rate Platinum, which holds the Allianz policy

Benefit administrator: None. The Orange One Low Rate has no complimentary insurance, so there is no insurer or benefit administrator attached to the card.

There is no complimentary insurance to claim on

1

Step 1: Check which card you actually hold

The complimentary international travel insurance sits on the Orange One Low Rate Platinum, issued at a credit limit of $6,000 or more. If you hold the plain Orange One Low Rate, there is no policy and nothing to claim.

2

Step 2: For a lost or stolen card, call ING

Call 133 464 within Australia, or +61 2 7242 1974 from overseas, 24/7, to stop the card and arrange a replacement. This is card servicing, not an insurance claim.

3

Step 3: For travel, rental or purchase cover, arrange your own

Because the card carries no complimentary cover, buy a standalone travel insurance or rental excess policy before you travel, and keep receipts and reports for any claim you make with that separate insurer.

FAQ

What people ask about the ING Orange One Low Rate

  • You cannot, because the Orange One Low Rate has no complimentary travel insurance to activate. ING does provide complimentary international travel insurance, but only on the Platinum tier, which you are upgraded to when approved for a credit limit of $6,000 or more (the Orange One Low Rate Platinum). If you hold the plain Low Rate, there is no spend threshold, no return-ticket rule and no cover to switch on. To be insured when you travel, arrange a standalone travel insurance policy before you leave.
  • No. The complimentary international travel insurance underwritten by Allianz sits on the Orange One Low Rate Platinum, not the base Orange One Low Rate. The difference is your credit limit: ING issues the Platinum version automatically at a limit of $6,000 or more. Below that, you hold the plain Low Rate, which carries no travel, rental or purchase cover at all. Same card design and the same $48 annual fee, but only the Platinum tier is insured.
  • No one. With no complimentary insurance policy on this card, there is no cover for the primary cardholder, any additional cardholder, a partner or dependent children. This applies to travel, rental vehicle excess and purchases alike. If you need any of those people covered when you travel, a separate travel insurance policy that names them is the only way to do it on this card.
  • No. The card does not reimburse the excess you owe after a hire-car is damaged or stolen, either overseas or on an Australian hire. The excess is the amount the hire company charges you towards the damage, commonly $2,000 to $5,500 here. With no card benefit, that cost sits entirely with you unless you take the hire company's own excess reduction cover or buy a standalone rental excess policy, which can start from a few dollars a day.
  • There is nothing to claim, because the card has no complimentary insurance and no benefit administrator. For a lost or stolen card, call ING on 133 464 within Australia or +61 2 7242 1974 from overseas, 24/7, but that is card servicing, not an insurance claim. Any travel, medical or rental claim would go through a separate insurer you arranged yourself. Keep that policy's details and receipts, and lodge with that insurer, not with ING.
  • Yes. Since this card includes no complimentary travel cover, a standalone travel insurance policy is the whole of your protection overseas, not a top-up. Medicare does not cover you outside Australia, and a serious hospital admission abroad can run $50,000 to $200,000. Buy a policy that matches your trip length and destination before you leave. If you later move to a $6,000 credit limit and are upgraded to the Low Rate Platinum, you would then hold ING's complimentary international cover instead.
  • No. The Orange One Low Rate has no mobile phone or screen cover, so a cracked or stolen phone is your cost. A flagship screen repair typically runs $200 to $600, and a full replacement much more. If phone cover matters, look at a dedicated device insurance policy or your home contents insurance, since this card adds nothing on that front.
  • In insurance terms, everything. There is no overseas or domestic travel cover, no trip cancellation, no emergency medical or evacuation, no baggage cover, no rental vehicle excess, and no purchase protection or extended warranty. The card is a low rate everyday Visa with no complimentary insurance of any kind. Its genuine travel perk is the absence of ING international transaction fees, which lowers the cost of spending abroad but insures nothing.
  • No. The card has no travel insurance at all, so there is no cover for skiing, snowboarding or any snow-sport injury, on-piste or off-piste. A medical evacuation off a mountain overseas can cost tens of thousands of dollars, all of which would be yours. If you are heading to the snow, take a dedicated travel insurance policy with snow-sports cover included, as this card offers nothing towards it.
