Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the ATB Financial Gold My Rewards Mastercard
Most of the travel suite is missing here. No emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no interruption, no lost-baggage indemnity. What you get is narrow: flight delay and delayed baggage at $250 a day to a $500 cap, plus common-carrier accidental death of $200,000 (up to $300,000 per account). Useful if a storm strands you overnight or a checked bag shows up late. For a real medical emergency abroad, where provincial plans (RAMQ, OHIP) pay almost nothing, this card does nothing, and the hospital bill is entirely on you.
- Flight delay and delayed baggage covered at $250/day, up to $500 (2 days) per trip
- Common-carrier accidental death and dismemberment up to $200,000 per person
- 4-hour delay trigger, in line with the better cards
- No emergency medical coverage abroad of any kind
- No trip cancellation and no trip interruption
- No lost or stolen baggage indemnity (only delayed-baggage expenses)
- No missed-connection, early-return or hotel-theft benefit
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What people ask about the ATB Financial Gold My Rewards Mastercard
- There is no separate registration. Each benefit applies when you charge the full cost of the rental, ticket or item to the ATB Gold My Rewards Mastercard and/or pay with ATB My Rewards points. For the rental car coverage, also decline the agency's collision damage waiver at the counter. Be clear on the limits first: this card has no emergency medical and no trip cancellation insurance, so those benefits cannot be activated at all. What you can rely on is flight delay, delayed baggage, rental car damage, common-carrier accident, and purchase, warranty and mobile device protection.
- The flight delay, delayed baggage and common-carrier accident benefits cover the primary cardholder, their spouse and dependent children when travelling with you. Dependent children must be under 21, or under 25 if a full-time student. The rental car damage waiver also covers any authorized driver listed on the rental contract, and rental personal effects extends to immediate family travelling with you. There is no emergency medical benefit on this card for anyone, regardless of age.
- It offers primary coverage. You file directly with Assurant for collision or theft damage to the rental vehicle, with no involvement from your personal auto insurer (that is what primary means). To use it, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver (CDW/LDW, the coverage the counter tries to sell you) and charge the full rental to the ATB Gold My Rewards Mastercard and/or ATB My Rewards points. Coverage runs for rentals of up to 31 consecutive days on vehicles with an actual cash value of $65,000 or less, and pays actual cash value plus loss-of-use. There is no third-party liability or roadside assistance.
- Claims are handled by Assurant. Call 1-866-305-0888 from Canada and the US, or 905-477-0702 collect from elsewhere, or file online at cardbenefits.assurant.com. Report rental car accidents or theft within 48 hours. For every benefit, send written notice within 45 days where possible and your proof of loss within 90 days of the loss. Keep receipts, tickets, the airline's written delay confirmation, the rental agreement showing you declined the agency CDW, and proof the cost was charged to the card and/or ATB My Rewards points.
- The big gaps are the headline travel benefits. There is no emergency medical coverage abroad, no trip cancellation, no trip interruption, no missed-connection, early-return or lost-baggage indemnity, and no hotel-theft benefit. On rentals, there is no third-party liability and no roadside assistance. On purchases, there is no price protection, return protection, event-ticket, rideshare or identity-theft coverage. Delayed-baggage and flight-delay payouts are capped at $500 per trip. For emergency medical abroad in particular, where provincial plans (RAMQ, OHIP) pay almost nothing, a standalone travel insurance policy is needed.
- Your flight must be delayed 4 hours or more from its scheduled departure, with no alternative transport offered within those 4 hours. After that, the ATB Gold My Rewards Mastercard reimburses hotel, meals, refreshments and essentials at $250 per day, up to $500 (2 days) per trip. The full ticket cost must have been charged to the card and/or ATB My Rewards points. Keep itemized receipts and get the airline's written confirmation of the delay and its cause before you file.
- Yes. Mobile Device Insurance covers a new phone against loss, theft, accidental damage or mechanical failure for up to two years, to a maximum of $1,500. A deductible of $25 to $100 applies depending on the device's cost, and the value depreciates 2% per month from purchase. To be eligible, charge the full device cost, or all up-front costs plus your monthly wireless bills, to the card. You can file one claim per 12 months and two per 48 months. Used or refurbished devices and accessories are excluded.
- Not on its own. The ATB Gold My Rewards Mastercard has no emergency medical coverage and no trip cancellation insurance, the two protections that matter most on an international trip. What it does well is the everyday side: a primary rental car damage waiver, flight and baggage delay, and purchase, warranty and mobile device protection. For any trip outside your province, you would need a standalone travel medical policy to cover a hospital stay, since provincial health plans pay almost nothing abroad. Treat this card's travel benefits as a useful extra, not your main coverage.
- Yes. Across the certificate, charging the full cost to the ATB Gold My Rewards Mastercard or paying with ATB My Rewards points activates the benefit, whether it is rental car damage, delayed baggage, purchase protection or mobile device insurance. The requirement is that the full cost is covered by the card and/or your points, not a partial payment. Keep the receipt and the statement showing how the purchase or trip was paid.
