Our take on travel insurance for the Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Travel protection on the Guaranteed Mastercard is minimal. You get common-carrier travel accident (AD&D) cover up to $250,000 and a small baggage-delay benefit ($100/day for up to 3 days), but there is no emergency medical, no trip cancellation or interruption, no flight delay and no lost-baggage coverage. Treat this as a credit-building card, not a travel card — buy standalone travel medical insurance before any trip abroad.

What works on travel
  • Common-carrier travel accident (AD&D) up to $250,000, covering spouse and dependent children
  • Baggage delay reimburses emergency essentials ($100/day, up to $300)
  • Benefits are automatic when the fare is charged to the card
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical or hospital coverage abroad
  • No trip cancellation or interruption coverage
  • No flight/trip delay and no lost or stolen baggage indemnity
Our methodology

Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What does Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard Travel Insurance actually cover?

This is accident-only cover — it pays out only for death or serious dismemberment in a common-carrier accident. It is not travel medical insurance.

Common Carrier Travel Accident insurance pays an accidental death & dismemberment benefit if you, your spouse or your dependent children are injured while riding as a passenger on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or boat) when the full fare was charged to the card.

What's covered
  • Cardholder, spouse and dependent children automatically insured
  • Applies when the entire ticket cost is charged to the card or paid with Capital One reward miles
  • Up to $250,000 for loss of life or two or more members; half for one member or one eye; quarter for thumb + index finger
What's not covered
  • Emotional trauma, illness, pregnancy or bodily malfunctions
  • Suicide or self-inflicted injuries
  • War (terrorism aside) and acts while serving as pilot or crew
  • Loss not occurring within one year of the accident
This covers baggage delay only — there is no separate lost or stolen baggage indemnity on this card.

Baggage Delay insurance reimburses the emergency purchase of essential items if a common carrier delays your checked baggage more than 4 hours from the time you arrive at your destination.

What's covered
  • Checked baggage delayed more than 4 hours by a common carrier
  • Fare charged to the card
  • $100 per day per insured person, up to 3 days ($300 maximum)
What's not covered
  • Lost or stolen baggage (only delay is covered)
  • Contact lenses, eyeglasses, hearing aids and prosthetics
  • Tickets, documents, money and securities
  • Business samples

FAQ

What people ask about the Capital One Guaranteed Mastercard

  • No. This card has no emergency medical or hospital coverage abroad. If you travel outside your province or country, you should buy a standalone travel medical policy — a medical emergency on a trip would not be covered by the card.
  • Two things only: Common Carrier Travel Accident insurance (accidental death & dismemberment up to $250,000 when the fare is charged to the card) and Baggage Delay (up to $300, at $100/day for 3 days, if a common carrier delays your checked bags more than 4 hours).
  • No. The card does not reimburse pre-paid, non-refundable travel costs if you cancel, and it does not cover extra costs if a trip is interrupted. It also has no flight/trip delay coverage and no lost or stolen baggage indemnity (only baggage delay).
  • Yes. The Collision/Loss Damage Waiver covers damage to or theft of an eligible rental vehicle (MSRP up to $65,000) for rentals of 31 days or less. You must charge the full rental to the card and decline the rental agency's own CDW/LDW.
  • Yes for the vehicle itself — because you decline the agency's waiver, the card's coverage applies to the rental vehicle's damage or theft without going through your personal auto insurer first. It does not include any third-party liability (injury or damage to others), which you must arrange separately.
  • Purchase Assurance (loss, theft or damage for 120 days from purchase), Extended Warranty (doubles the manufacturer's warranty up to 2 extra years) — together capped at a $60,000 lifetime maximum per account — and a Price Protection Service (up to $100/item, $500/year, within 60 days). There is no mobile device, return, or identity theft protection.
  • Coverage is underwritten by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida and American Bankers Life Assurance Company of Florida (Assurant), under group policies COB112002 / COBL072014, with Capital One Bank (Canada Branch) as policyholder. To claim, call the administrator at 1-888-324-2363 (Canada/U.S.) or +1-416-205-4357 collect from elsewhere. Report rental and purchase claims within 48 hours.
  • No. The Guaranteed Mastercard is offered as a secured card ($59 annual fee, refundable security deposit) or unsecured ($0 annual fee). Both share the same certificate of insurance and the same benefits described here.
