Our take on travel insurance for the American Express Platinum Edge

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The Amex Platinum Edge is no longer sold to new applicants (it is no longer on American Express's New Zealand card list), yet existing card members still carry Chubb cover under a policy wording dated 1 March 2025. $2.5M medical. 35-day trips. You come down with a fever in Bali and the clinic wants payment up front: the Amex Platinum Edge travel insurance pays treatment up to $2,500,000 after a $250 excess (the first slice of each claim you pay yourself), as long as Chubb Assistance approves anything over $1,500 first. Most card members assume holding the card is enough, and it isn't: the policy wording (Chubb's full policy document for the card's cover) only switches cover on when the full fare for the trip went on the card or was paid with Membership Rewards points, and it stops once a trip passes 35 consecutive days. ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing overseas, medical cover ends at 74, and standalone policies sold in New Zealand usually put no dollar cap on medical. If you take short trips, you are under 74 and you book the flights on the card, this cover does real work; for a long OE or a pre-existing condition, only a standalone policy fills the gap.

What works on travel
  • $2,500,000 overseas medical, with evacuation and repatriation arranged by Chubb Assistance
  • Trips within New Zealand count when they take you more than 150 km from home
  • Flight delay pays from 4 hours: hotel and meals up to $200, no excess
  • $10,000 cancellation per trip, including Membership Rewards points lost on a cancelled ticket
  • Partner and dependent children aged 22 or under are covered when their fares go on the card
Where travel breaks down
  • No longer sold: only existing card members still hold the card and its cover
  • Full fare must be paid with the card or Membership Rewards points: pay any other way and there is no travel cover
  • Cover stops once a trip passes 35 consecutive days, and after 90 travel days a year
  • Medical capped at $2,500,000 and not available from age 74
  • Pre-existing medical conditions excluded, with no option in the policy wording to buy cover

What does American Express Platinum Edge Travel Insurance actually cover?

Cover only exists if the full fare went on the card or Membership Rewards points. A relative who lives outside New Zealand falling ill is not a covered reason.

Deductible : $250

Covers non-refundable deposits, prepaid excursions and unused travel and accommodation costs up to $10,000 per trip when you have to cancel or cut the trip short for a listed reason. Listed reasons include the illness, injury or death of you, a travelling companion or a close relative aged 80 or under, redundancy, jury service, and a delay of more than 24 hours on the outward leg. A ticket bought with Membership Rewards points is paid back at its retail price if the points cannot be recovered. A $250 excess applies.

What's covered
  • Non-refundable deposits and prepaid excursion costs
  • Unused travel and accommodation costs you paid or must pay
  • Travel agent's commission, up to $750 or 15%, whichever is less
  • Other reasonable additional expenses, up to $3,000
  • Retail price of a ticket bought with Membership Rewards points, if the points cannot be recovered
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Illness, injury or death of anyone living outside New Zealand
  • Changing your mind, work commitments or your financial circumstances
  • Any government regulation, prohibition or restriction
  • Circumstances known when you booked the trip or applied for the card
  • Travel agent failure, a travel provider's insolvency, or a tour cancelled for lack of numbers
Medical is capped at $2.5M, not unlimited, and stops at age 74. Bills over $1,500 need Chubb Assistance's prior approval, so call before treatment.

Deductible : $250

Pays emergency treatment overseas up to $2,500,000, after a $250 excess per claim, for card members under 74 who are in good health and fit to travel. Chubb Assistance must approve any medical cost above $1,500 before you incur it, wherever you can physically call. Costs incurred in New Zealand are never covered, and ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing overseas.

What's covered
  • Treatment by a doctor to cure or relieve acute illness or injury overseas
  • Emergency dental treatment up to $1,000
  • Hospital admission arranged and costs guaranteed by Chubb Assistance
  • Extra accommodation up to $150 a night for 10 nights on medical advice
  • Return economy airfare and accommodation for a friend or relative if you travel alone
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions (2-year look-back, any heart or circulatory condition, pregnancy within 8 weeks of the due date)
  • Special Sports, including heli-skiing, ski racing, scuba diving below 30 metres and bungee jumping
  • Extreme sports needing special equipment, training and preparation
  • Manual work
  • Costs incurred in New Zealand
  • Costs after Chubb Assistance says you should return home
  • Trips taken to get treatment, and cosmetic treatment

Deductible : $250

Pays to move you to the nearest hospital, evacuate you to a better-equipped one, or bring you home to New Zealand when Chubb Assistance's senior medical officer approves it. The policy wording sets no separate dollar cap for this benefit. If you die on the trip, Chubb pays to bring your remains home, or for a local burial up to $15,000.

What's covered
  • Transport to the nearest hospital where it is not free locally
  • Evacuation to an adequately equipped hospital
  • Repatriation to New Zealand on medical advice
  • Return home after hospitalisation if your original transport cannot be used
  • Return of remains, cremation, or local burial up to $15,000
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Special Sports and extreme sports
  • Coffins or urns that do not meet international airline standards
  • Countries under a United Nations embargo

Deductible : $250

Pays emergency dental treatment overseas up to $1,000 when sudden dental pain needs treatment that cannot wait until you are home. The $250 medical excess applies, so a small filling can cost you more than the claim pays. Dentures, crowns and orthodontics are excluded.

What's covered
  • Emergency dental treatment for sudden pain overseas
What's not covered
  • Dentures, crowns and orthodontics
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Costs incurred in New Zealand

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with this card. No daily allowance is paid during a hospital stay overseas, so the incidental costs of an admission are yours to cover.

What's not covered
  • No daily hospital allowance in the policy wording
This is not a general disruption benefit: extra hotel nights only pay when the trip is cancelled or cut short for a listed reason.

Deductible : $250

Pays other reasonable additional expenses up to $3,000 when you have to cancel or cut short a trip for a listed reason, such as a serious illness or a delay of more than 24 hours on the outward leg. It sits inside the $10,000 cancellation cover rather than as a separate disruption benefit. A $250 excess applies.

What's covered
  • Reasonable additional expenses after a covered cancellation or curtailment
What's not covered
  • Disruption that does not lead to cancellation or curtailment
  • Any government regulation, prohibition or restriction
  • A travel provider's insolvency
  • Pre-existing medical conditions

Deductible : No deductible

If your scheduled flight is delayed 4 hours or more, cancelled, or you are bumped from an overbooked flight with no alternative within 4 hours, the card pays hotel and meal costs up to $200. When more than one covered person claims for the same event, the most it pays is double, $400. The costs must be charged to the Platinum Edge Credit Card, and you need invoices or receipts.

What's covered
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Restaurant meals or refreshments
What's not covered
  • Delays where alternative transport is offered within 4 hours
  • Costs not charged to the card
  • Confiscation by customs or other authorities
Pays only hotel and meals, up to $200. A new flight or transfer to catch a cruise or tour is not covered.

Deductible : No deductible

If a late incoming scheduled flight makes you miss your onward connection and no onward transport is offered within 4 hours, the card pays hotel and meals up to $200. It does not pay for a new ticket or alternative transport to reach a cruise, tour or event. Costs must go on the Platinum Edge Credit Card.

What's covered
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Restaurant meals or refreshments
What's not covered
  • Cost of a replacement ticket or alternative transport
  • Costs not charged to the card
Only relatives aged 80 or under who live in New Zealand count, and there is no cover to go back and finish the trip.

Deductible : $250

If you cut a trip short and head home for a listed reason, such as the serious illness or death of a close relative aged 80 or under who lives in New Zealand, the card pays your unused prepaid costs within the $10,000 cancellation cover, plus reasonable additional expenses, such as the extra cost of flying home, up to $3,000. There is no benefit to resume the trip afterwards. A $250 excess applies.

What's covered
  • Unused prepaid travel and accommodation costs
  • Reasonable additional expenses, up to $3,000
What's not covered
  • Resuming the trip after returning home
  • Relatives over 80 or living outside New Zealand
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Changing your plans

Deductible : No deductible

If your checked bag has not arrived 6 hours after you land, the card pays for emergency clothing and toiletries up to $200, and up to another $500 once the delay reaches 48 hours. The purchases must go on the Platinum Edge Credit Card and you need the airline's property irregularity report (the form you file at the airport). The $200 is not limited to your first flight: it applies at any scheduled destination of the trip, including stopovers. Only the extra $500 excludes a delay at your place of residence, and the policy wording excludes both benefits on your arrival back in New Zealand.

What's covered
  • Emergency clothing and toiletries
What's not covered
  • Delay on arrival back in New Zealand (both benefits)
  • Extra $500: delay at your place of residence
  • No report filed with the airline
  • Confiscation by customs or other authorities
The $250 excess eats into small claims, and valuables packed in checked luggage are not covered.

Deductible : $250

Pays for lost, stolen or damaged baggage and personal items up to $10,000 in any 365-day period, not per trip. Each item, pair or set, or valuable is capped at $1,000, a mobile phone at $500 and a laptop at $2,500, with payouts based on current price less wear and tear. A $250 excess applies per claim, and theft must be reported to the police within 48 hours.

What's covered
  • Clothing and personal effects
  • Valuables, up to $1,000 each
  • Mobile phone, up to $500
  • Laptop, up to $2,500
What's not covered
  • Items left unattended in a public place
  • Valuables in checked baggage or an unattended vehicle
  • Items loaned, hired or entrusted to you
  • Sports gear damaged while in use
  • Theft from a hotel room without signs of forced entry
  • Wear and tear, breakdown and fragile items

Deductible : $250

Lost or stolen cash, travellers' cheques, travel tickets, passports, visas and driving licences are paid up to $750, inside the baggage cover. The $250 baggage excess applies, so a $400 loss returns $150. Report the loss to the police within 48 hours and get a written report.

What's covered
  • Cash and travellers' cheques
  • Passports, visas and driving licences
  • Travel tickets and holiday vouchers
What's not covered
  • Shortages, errors or omissions
  • Items left unattended in a public place
  • Depreciation in value

Deductible : No deductible

Pays damages you become legally liable for during a trip, for injuring someone or damaging their property, up to $1,000,000 for one cause. Do not admit fault or offer payment without Chubb's written consent. Liability from vehicles, firearms, your work or Special Sports is excluded.

What's covered
  • Injury to another person
  • Accidental loss of or damage to someone else's property
  • Legal representation at an inquest or summary court, with Chubb's consent
What's not covered
  • Injury to family members or employees
  • Property in your care, other than accommodation you occupy on the trip
  • Motor vehicles, aircraft, watercraft and firearms
  • Your trade, business or profession
  • Special Sports
Only pays for accidents on public transport or in a terminal. A crash in a hire car or a fall on a hike pays nothing.

Deductible : No deductible

Pays $300,000 if an accident while you travel as a passenger on a common carrier (any licensed airline, bus, train, ferry or taxi), or in its terminal, or by common carrier to or from it, causes death or the loss of both hands, both feet or the sight of both eyes within 100 days. The loss of one hand, one foot or the sight of one eye pays $150,000. The entire fare must have been charged to the card or paid with Membership Rewards points, and only one loss is paid per accident.

What's covered
  • Death
  • Loss of hands, feet or sight
  • Disappearance or exposure after the carrier is wrecked
What's not covered
  • Accidents in a rental or private car, on foot or during sport
  • Private charter flights
  • More than one payment per accident
  • Alcohol, drugs or self-inflicted injury

No loss of income cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Injured in Bali and off work for 8 weeks on your return, you get no income replacement from this card, and ACC weekly compensation only applies to injuries ACC covers.

What's not covered
  • No loss of income benefit in the policy wording

Deductible : $250

A trip within New Zealand more than 150 km from home counts as a covered trip when its full fare went on the card or Membership Rewards points, so the same $10,000 cancellation cover applies. Non-refundable flights, accommodation and prepaid excursions are paid back after a $250 excess when a listed reason forces you to cancel.

What's covered
  • Non-refundable deposits
  • Unused travel and accommodation costs
  • Prepaid excursions
What's not covered
  • Trips of 150 km or less from home
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Changing your mind or work commitments

Deductible : No deductible

On a domestic trip more than 150 km from home, a scheduled flight delayed 4 hours or more, cancelled or overbooked with no alternative within 4 hours pays hotel and meals up to $200, or $400 when more than one covered person claims. Charge the costs to the Platinum Edge Credit Card and keep the receipts.

What's covered
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Restaurant meals or refreshments
What's not covered
  • Trips of 150 km or less from home
  • Costs not charged to the card

Deductible : $250

Reasonable additional expenses up to $3,000 are paid when a domestic trip over 150 km from home is cancelled or cut short for a listed reason. This sits inside the $10,000 cancellation cover and carries the $250 excess.

What's covered
  • Reasonable additional expenses after a covered cancellation or curtailment
What's not covered
  • Disruption that does not lead to cancellation or curtailment
  • Pre-existing medical conditions

Deductible : $250

Baggage cover applies on domestic trips over 150 km from home too, within the same $10,000 a year shared with overseas trips, with $1,000 per item and a $250 excess per claim. Valuables in checked luggage and items left unattended in a public place are excluded.

What's covered
  • Clothing and personal effects
  • Mobile phone, up to $500
  • Laptop, up to $2,500
What's not covered
  • Items left unattended in a public place
  • Valuables in checked baggage or an unattended vehicle
  • Sports gear damaged while in use

Deductible : No deductible

If your checked bag on a domestic flight has not arrived 6 hours after you land at the scheduled destination, essential clothing and toiletries are paid up to $200, plus up to $500 more after 48 hours. The purchases must go on the card. The first $200 is not limited to the outbound flight, but the extra $500 after 48 hours does not apply when the destination is your place of residence.

What's covered
  • Emergency clothing and toiletries
What's not covered
  • Extra $500: delay at your place of residence
  • No report filed with the airline

How to make an Amex Platinum Edge insurance claim

1

Step 1: Call Chubb Assistance before treatment overseas

If you are hurt or ill overseas, call Chubb Assistance on +61 2 9335 3492, reverse charge through the local operator, with your card account number. The policy wording says Chubb will not pay medical costs over $1,500 without its prior approval, so call before treatment wherever you physically can. Report theft or loss to the police within 48 hours, and a delayed or damaged bag to the airline, and keep the written reports.

2

Step 2: Send written notice within 20 days with proof you paid the full fare

Send written notice of the claim to the Claims Department, Chubb Insurance New Zealand Limited, PO Box 734, Auckland 1010, within 20 days of the loss or as soon as reasonably practicable, and call 0800 703 702 (+61 2 9335 3354 from overseas) for a claim form. Include your card account number, the statement or points record showing the full fare went on the card, itemised bills, original receipts and any police or airline report. A $250 excess comes off medical, baggage and cancellation claims, and Chubb pays within 30 days once it accepts the claim.

3

Step 3: If Chubb says no, take it to FSCL

Complain first to Chubb on 0800 422 346 or Complaints.NZ@chubb.com, then ask for its internal dispute resolution team on +64 9 377 1459. If you are unhappy with that decision, or nothing is resolved within two months, Financial Services Complaints Ltd (FSCL) reviews the dispute for free, and the policy wording asks you to go to FSCL within 2 months of Chubb's dispute decision. FSCL can award up to $500,000.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Platinum Edge

  • You activate it by paying the full fare for the trip with the Amex Platinum Edge Credit Card, or with American Express Membership Rewards points, before you travel. Holding the card is not enough, and a fare split with another card does not qualify. The complimentary Air New Zealand domestic return flight that comes with the card also counts. The trip has to start and end in New Zealand, and a trip within New Zealand only counts if it takes you more than 150 km from home. There is no registration step. Cover stops once a trip passes 35 consecutive days or you reach 90 travel days in a membership year, so keep the card statement or points record: proof of payment is the first thing Chubb checks.
  • The primary card member is covered, along with their husband, wife, fiance(e), de facto or life partner they have lived with for at least six months, and dependent children aged 22 or under who rely on them financially. Supplementary card members get no cover at all, and the policy wording says a supplementary card member is not part of the covered family, so a partner who holds a supplementary card falls outside it. Each person's trip still needs its full fare charged to the Platinum Edge account or paid with Membership Rewards points. Medical cover only applies under 74, so an older partner has no medical cover even when the fare went on the card. If your partner travels on a supplementary card, a standalone policy for them closes the gap.
  • No. The Amex Platinum Edge policy wording has no rental vehicle section, so it does not reimburse the excess (the amount a hire company charges you after damage to or theft of the car) on a hire overseas or in New Zealand. The personal liability cover does not fill the gap either, because it excludes motor vehicles and property in your care. Paying for the hire with the card earns points but buys no insurance. If you hire a car or campervan, take the rental company's excess reduction option or a standalone rental excess policy, and compare the two prices before you sign, because the excess on a campervan commonly runs into the thousands of dollars.
  • Claims go to Chubb Insurance New Zealand, the insurer behind the card. In an emergency overseas, call Chubb Assistance on +61 2 9335 3492, reverse charge, before treatment, because medical costs over $1,500 need its approval. Otherwise send written notice to Chubb's Claims Department, PO Box 734, Auckland 1010, within 20 days of the loss or as soon as reasonably practicable, and call 0800 703 702 for a claim form. Include your card account number, original receipts, itemised bills, any police or airline report and proof the full fare went on the card. Chubb pays within 30 days of accepting a claim. If it declines and its complaints and dispute teams don't fix it, Financial Services Complaints Ltd (FSCL) reviews the dispute for free and can award up to $500,000.
  • The cover is real, but five traps catch people. If the full fare did not go on the card or Membership Rewards points, there is no travel cover at all. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded, with a 2-year look-back and no time limit for heart or circulatory conditions. Medical cover stops at 74, and cover ends once a trip passes 35 consecutive days. Supplementary card members get no cover. And Special Sports such as heli-skiing, bungee jumping and scuba diving below 30 metres are excluded, as are a cancellation caused by the illness of someone living outside New Zealand, government restrictions and a travel provider going broke. There is no rental excess, purchase or phone cover either.
  • No. The Platinum Edge is not on the list of cards American Express New Zealand sells today, and its old product page now redirects to that list. If you already hold one, the complimentary insurance still applies, because Chubb keeps a policy wording for existing card members, prepared on 1 March 2025, and the cover only ends if your account is cancelled or the master policy ends. The annual fee was $149 when the card was last sold, so check your statement for what you pay now. If you are choosing a new card, compare the cover on the cards American Express sells today, or a standalone travel policy.
  • Yes for recreational skiing and snowboarding overseas, with no paid extension needed. An injury on the slopes is paid under the $2,500,000 overseas medical cover after a $250 excess, for travellers under 74, and the $1,000,000 personal liability cover applies if you injure another skier. Heli-skiing, ski racing, ski jumping, ski stunting, paraskiing and skidoo are excluded as Special Sports, and the policy wording also excludes extreme sports needing special equipment, training and preparation, so ask Chubb before a back-country trip. Your own skis count as baggage up to $1,000 per item, but not when damaged in use. There is no ski hire or lift pass benefit, and the card never pays for treatment in New Zealand.
  • Often, yes. The Amex Platinum Edge caps overseas medical at $2,500,000, where standalone policies sold in New Zealand usually set no dollar cap, and it gives no medical cover at all from age 74. Cover also ends once a trip passes 35 consecutive days, pre-existing conditions are excluded with no option to buy cover, and cancellation is capped at $10,000 per trip. ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, so these gaps fall on you. For a short trip with the full fare on the card, the card cover does real work. For a long OE, a partner on a supplementary card, a pre-existing condition or a trip costing more than $10,000, a standalone travel policy is the safer choice.
  • Yes, for trips more than 150 km from home, when the full fare went on the card or Membership Rewards points. Such a trip counts as a Domestic Trip, so cancellation up to $10,000, flight delay from 4 hours (hotel and meals up to $200), luggage delay from 6 hours, baggage up to $10,000 a year and personal liability up to $1,000,000 all apply in New Zealand. Medical costs in New Zealand are never covered: the policy wording excludes them, and ACC and the public health system handle treatment at home. The complimentary Air New Zealand domestic return flight that comes with the card also switches the cover on. A trip closer to home has no cover.
  • Up to 35 consecutive days per trip, and 90 travel days in total in each year of card membership. The policy wording says cover for a trip ceases at the earliest of your return home, the trip passing 35 consecutive days, or your 90th day of travel in that membership year. That puts the Amex Platinum Edge at the short end of New Zealand card cover, so a month visiting family in Tokyo fits, but a six-week trip leaves the last week uninsured. Every trip must start and end in New Zealand, with the full fare on the card or paid with points. For a longer trip, buy a standalone policy for the whole journey rather than topping up the gap.
