Our take on travel insurance for the American Express Platinum Card

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

$5M overseas medical. Full fare on the card. Here's what that means before you fly. So, you're in a Honolulu emergency department and the admissions desk wants to know who is paying: with this American Express travel insurance, the answer is Chubb, up to $5,000,000 for treatment and repatriation, after a $250 excess (the first slice of each claim you pay yourself). Most cardholders assume holding the card is enough. It isn't: the policy wording (the insurer's full policy document for the card's cover) only switches cover on when the full outbound ticket was paid with the card, Membership Rewards points or frequent flyer points, and a one-way trip is never covered. ACC and the public health system pay nothing overseas, and standalone policies sold in New Zealand usually carry no dollar cap on medical, so the $5M limit is the figure to weigh for a long hospital stay in the United States. The kicker: trips more than 150 km from home inside New Zealand get cancellation, delay and baggage cover too, which few cards offer. If you are 79 or under and pay your flights on the card, this cover handles most trips; if you have a pre-existing condition, a standalone policy is the only way to be covered for it.

What works on travel
  • $5,000,000 overseas medical and repatriation, COVID-19 treated as an illness
  • $30,000 per person cancellation and trip change, overseas and for domestic trips over 150 km
  • Flight delay pays from 4 hours: $650 per person, $1,300 per event, no excess
  • $20,000 baggage per person, $2,500 per item and $5,000 for a laptop
  • Spouse, dependent children up to 25 and additional card members are covered persons
Where travel breaks down
  • Full outbound fare must go on the card or points: pay the flights another way and there is no cover
  • Medical capped at $5,000,000 and paid overseas only, where most bank cards advertise unlimited
  • Pre-existing medical conditions excluded, with no option to buy cover in the policy wording
  • No medical cover if you are 80 or older when you pay for the trip
  • Accidental death only pays after a public transport accident

What does American Express Platinum Card Travel Insurance actually cover?

Cover only exists if the full outbound fare went on the card or points. Pay the flight another way and a cancellation is not covered.

Deductible : $250

Capped at $30,000 per person per trip, for international and domestic trips alike, covering non-refundable prepaid deposits, travel, accommodation and excursions when a listed event forces you to cancel or change the trip. Travel agent commission is paid up to $750 or 15% of the booking, whichever is less. COVID-19 counts as an illness, and a $250 excess applies per person and per event.

What's covered
  • Non-refundable prepaid travel, accommodation and excursions
  • Reasonable costs to change the trip instead of cancelling
  • Travel agent commission up to $750 or 15% of the booking
  • Tickets bought with Membership Rewards points, valued at the retail price
  • COVID-19 diagnosis, treated like any other illness
What's not covered
  • Changing your mind
  • Pre-existing medical conditions, yours, a companion's or a close relative's (except a death not caused by a terminal illness)
  • Close relatives aged 81 or over
  • Government travel advisories, border closures and mandatory quarantine
  • Insolvency of an airline, tour operator or travel agent
  • Work commitments and financial circumstances
  • Costs refunded or offered as a credit or voucher
Medical is capped at $5M, not unlimited, and only overseas. ACC and the public health system pay nothing overseas, so anything above the cap is yours.

Deductible : $250

Capped at $5,000,000 per person for emergency medical treatment and hospital costs overseas, on an international return trip only, after a $250 excess per event. You must be 79 or younger when you pay for the trip, and costs from a terrorist act are capped at $1,000,000. COVID-19 is treated like any other illness, and nothing is paid for treatment once you are back in New Zealand.

What's covered
  • Emergency medical and hospital treatment overseas
  • Emergency dental treatment up to $1,500
  • Incidental hospital costs, $100 per 24 hours up to $8,000
  • Extra accommodation for you and a carer, $100 per 24 hours up to $5,000
  • Return economy airfare and accommodation for a relative or friend if you travel alone, up to $5,000
  • COVID-19 treated as an illness
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions (2-year look-back, 5 years for heart, cancer, kidney, brain, lung, neck and back conditions)
  • Treatment in New Zealand, including domestic trips
  • Excluded sports and activities such as diving, horse riding, bungee jumping and heli-skiing
  • Pregnancy within 8 weeks of the due date, and childbirth
  • Costs that a call to Chubb Assistance would have reduced
  • Destinations under a Do Not Travel advisory before departure

Deductible : $250

Capped at $5,000,000, inside the overseas medical section, for transport to the nearest hospital, evacuation to an adequately equipped hospital or repatriation to New Zealand once you are fit to travel. Chubb Assistance must approve the move, and if you arrange it yourself you may pay the costs its preferred providers would have avoided. Return of remains or a local burial is paid up to $15,000.

What's covered
  • Transport to the nearest hospital
  • Evacuation to an adequately equipped hospital
  • Repatriation to New Zealand
  • Return of remains or local burial, up to $15,000 (30,000 EUR in a Schengen country)
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Staying overseas after Chubb Assistance confirms you are fit to return
  • Repatriation organised without Chubb Assistance, to the extent it cost more

Deductible : $250

Emergency dental treatment to natural teeth overseas is paid up to $1,500, as a sub-limit of the overseas medical section. The treatment must be one that cannot wait until you are back in New Zealand, and a $250 excess applies per event.

What's covered
  • Emergency treatment to natural teeth overseas
What's not covered
  • Decay and deterioration of teeth
  • Dentures, crowns and orthodontics
  • Routine dental treatment
  • Dental treatment in New Zealand

Deductible : $250

Pays incidental costs such as food and toiletries of $100 for each complete 24 hours you spend in an overseas hospital as an in-patient, up to $8,000. It sits inside the overseas medical section, so the same $250 excess and age rule apply.

What's covered
  • Incidental costs during an overseas in-patient stay
What's not covered
  • Stays caused by pre-existing conditions or excluded activities
  • Hospital stays in New Zealand

Deductible : $250

Capped at $5,000 per person for reasonable additional travel and accommodation when a listed event forces you to change the trip once you have left, such as an injury, a natural disaster or a provider cancelling your transport. Where you have both extra costs and forfeited bookings for the same night, only the higher amount is paid. A $250 excess applies.

What's covered
  • Additional travel costs after a forced trip change
  • Additional accommodation costs
  • Extra costs during a quarantine linked to a covered trip change
What's not covered
  • Costs payable under another section
  • Insolvency of a travel provider
  • Government advisories and border closures
  • Changing your mind

Deductible : No deductible

Pays hotel accommodation (room only) and restaurant meals up to $650 per person, and $1,300 per event, when a scheduled flight is delayed or cancelled by 4 hours or more, or you are bumped with no other flight within 4 hours. No excess applies, and the same benefit works on domestic trips.

What's covered
  • Hotel accommodation (room only)
  • Restaurant meals and refreshments
  • Delay, cancellation, overbooking or a missed onward connection
What's not covered
  • Credits or refunds from the airline are deducted
  • Costs already paid under another section

No alternative transport cover. Travel Inconvenience Cover pays hotel and meals up to $650 when you miss a connecting scheduled flight and no other flight is offered within 4 hours, but not the cost of another way to get there. The cost of alternative transport to reach a prepaid cruise, tour or event on time is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • No alternative transport benefit in the policy wording

Deductible : $250

If a close relative aged 80 or under dies or is hospitalised while you are away, the reasonable extra cost of travelling directly home is paid within the $5,000 additional travel and accommodation sub-limit. There is no benefit to fly back out and resume the trip, and a $250 excess applies.

What's covered
  • Extra travel and accommodation to return directly home
What's not covered
  • Close relatives aged 81 or over
  • Pre-existing conditions of the relative, unless they die from a cause other than a terminal illness
  • Costs to resume the trip

Deductible : No deductible

If an airline has not delivered your checked bag within 6 hours of arrival, essential clothing and toiletries are reimbursed up to $650 per person, and a further $650 is paid if the bag is still missing after 48 hours. No excess applies, but the bag delayed on your flight home is never covered.

What's covered
  • Emergency purchase of essential clothing and toiletries
What's not covered
  • Delay on the scheduled flight that returns you home
  • Clothing or toiletries not needed for the trip
  • No luggage incident report and no evidence you tried to get one
Valuables packed in checked luggage are not covered, and depreciation cuts the payout on anything more than a few months old.

Deductible : $250

Lost, stolen or damaged baggage and valuables are covered up to $20,000 per person, with $2,500 per item or set, $5,000 for one laptop and $1,000 for one smartphone. Payouts are reduced by depreciation of up to 65% (2.5% a month for electronics), and a $250 excess applies.

What's covered
  • Personal baggage and clothing
  • Valuables such as cameras, watches and jewellery
  • One laptop up to $5,000
  • One smartphone up to $1,000
What's not covered
  • Valuables or cash in checked luggage
  • Items left unattended in a public place or in a car
  • Sporting equipment while in use
  • Items hired, loaned or entrusted to you
  • Drones, and electrical or mechanical breakdown
  • Fire damage in New Zealand

Deductible : $250

Lost or stolen cash, passports, visas, tickets and driving licences are covered up to $500 in total per person, inside the baggage section. A $250 excess applies, so a claim for a replacement passport alone often pays very little.

What's covered
  • Cash and travellers cheques
  • Passports, visas, travel tickets and driving licences
What's not covered
  • Cash left unattended in a car or public place
  • Cash stolen from your room without signs of forced entry
  • Shortages and errors
  • Cryptocurrency, gift cards and prepaid cards

Deductible : No deductible

Covers your legal liability if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property during the trip, up to $2,000,000 including legal costs. No excess applies, and you must not admit liability without Chubb's written consent.

What's covered
  • Compensation for injury or death of another person
  • Accidental damage to other people's property
  • Legal costs incurred with Chubb's consent
What's not covered
  • Motor vehicles, aircraft, drones and most watercraft
  • Injury to family members or close relatives
  • Your trade or business
  • Excluded sports and activities
  • Fines and punitive damages
This is a public transport benefit only. A car crash or a fall on a hike pays no lump sum.

Deductible : No deductible

Pays $800,000 for accidental death, and up to $400,000 for permanent disablement, but only after an accident while travelling on, boarding or leaving public transport, or waiting in its terminal. An accident anywhere else on the trip pays nothing, and the death benefit does not apply to anyone aged 15 or under. The disablement amounts have no age limit.

What's covered
  • Accidental death on public transport, $800,000
  • Loss of both hands, both feet or the sight of both eyes, $400,000
  • Loss of one hand, one foot or the sight of one eye, $200,000
  • Death after the disappearance or wreck of public transport
What's not covered
  • Privately hired, rented or chartered transport
  • Death from illness or natural causes
  • Accidents outside public transport

No loss of income cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Injured in Bali and off work for 8 weeks on your return, you get no income replacement from this card, and ACC weekly compensation only applies to injuries ACC covers.

What's not covered
  • No loss of income benefit in the policy wording

Deductible : $250

Trips within New Zealand more than 150 km from home get the same $30,000 per person cancellation and trip change cover as overseas trips, after a $250 excess. Cover switches on when you spend $500 or more on accommodation, or pay the full outbound ticket, with the card or points.

What's covered
  • Non-refundable prepaid domestic travel, accommodation and excursions
  • Reasonable costs to change the trip
What's not covered
  • Trips less than 150 km from home
  • Changing your mind
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Insolvency of a travel provider

Deductible : No deductible

A domestic scheduled flight delayed or cancelled by 4 hours or more is covered the same way as overseas: hotel (room only) and meals up to $650 per person and $1,300 per event, with no excess.

What's covered
  • Hotel accommodation (room only)
  • Restaurant meals and refreshments
What's not covered
  • Credits or refunds from the airline are deducted
  • Trips less than 150 km from home

Deductible : $250

What's covered
  • Additional travel costs
  • Additional accommodation costs
What's not covered
  • Costs payable under another section
  • Trips less than 150 km from home

Deductible : $250

Baggage lost, stolen or damaged on a domestic trip is covered up to $20,000 per person, with the same $2,500 per item limit, depreciation and $250 excess as overseas. Fire damage in New Zealand is excluded.

What's covered
  • Personal baggage and valuables on a domestic trip
What's not covered
  • Fire damage in New Zealand
  • Items left unattended
  • Valuables or cash in checked luggage

Deductible : No deductible

If a domestic flight leaves your checked bag behind for 6 hours or more, essentials are reimbursed up to $650 per person, plus a further $650 after 48 hours, with no excess. The flight that brings you home is excluded.

What's covered
  • Essential clothing and toiletries
What's not covered
  • Delay on the flight that returns you home

How to make a Platinum Card insurance claim

1

Step 1: Call Chubb Assistance before treatment overseas

If you are hurt or ill overseas, call Chubb Assistance on +61 2 9335 3354 with your card account number before you seek treatment. The policy wording says you may pay the costs a call would have avoided if you skip it, and you may need call logs to prove you tried. Report theft or loss to the police, and delayed or damaged bags to the airline, and keep the written reports.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim with proof of your qualifying purchase

Lodge online through the Chubb Claims Centre at americanexpress.com/newzealand/claims, or call 0800 703 702 for a paper form. Send the card statement or points record showing the full outbound fare went on the card, itemised medical bills, receipts and any police or airline report. Once Chubb has everything it decides within 10 business days and pays within 10 business days of approval. A $250 excess comes off medical, cancellation and baggage claims.

3

Step 3: If Chubb says no, take it to FSCL

Complain first to Chubb's Complaints and Customer Resolution Service on +64 9 377 1459 or Complaints.NZ@chubb.com. If you get a deadlock letter, or nothing is resolved within 2 months, Financial Services Complaints Ltd (FSCL) reviews the dispute for free, and the policy wording asks you to apply within 3 months of the deadlock letter. FSCL can award up to $500,000.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Platinum Card

  • You activate it by paying the full outbound ticket for a scheduled flight or cruise leaving New Zealand with the Platinum Card, Membership Rewards points or frequent flyer points, before you leave. Holding the card is not enough, and a ticket paid partly with another card does not qualify. For a trip within New Zealand more than 150 km from home, spending $500 or more on accommodation with the card also works. The trip must be a return trip, and cover ends once it passes 180 consecutive days, overseas or within New Zealand. You must live in New Zealand, and the card account must still be open on the day of the claim. There is no registration step. If a provider refuses Amex, keep proof of purchase and its name and address.
  • The primary card member is covered, and so are additional card members on the account, their spouse (a husband, wife, fiance or de facto partner) and their dependent children aged 25 or under, or of any age if permanently unable to support themselves and living with you. Every covered person must be a New Zealand resident. Limits apply per covered person for each trip, so two adults each get their own $20,000 baggage limit, though the flight delay benefit pays at most $1,300 per event. Overseas medical cover needs each person to be 79 or younger when the trip is paid for, and the car rental cover needs a driver aged 21 to 75.
  • Yes, and overseas it goes further than excess cover. On a hire car abroad the card acts as a loss damage waiver: it pays what you owe the rental company after damage, fire, vandalism, theft or loss of use, up to $150,000, whether or not you caused it, or pays back the deductible if you bought the rental company's cover. On a hire inside New Zealand it only reimburses the deductible, up to $10,000, and only if you took the rental company's insurance. In both cases the hire must be 31 days or less, paid in full on the card or with points, on a trip more than 150 km from home. Campervans, motorhomes and motorcycles are excluded, and so is damage on unsealed roads.
  • Claims go to Chubb Insurance New Zealand, the insurer behind the card. In an emergency overseas, call Chubb Assistance on +61 2 9335 3354 before treatment. Otherwise lodge online through the Chubb Claims Centre at americanexpress.com/newzealand/claims, or call 0800 703 702 for a claim form, and tell Chubb as soon as reasonably practicable. Include the statement showing the full outbound fare went on the card, itemised bills and any police or airline report. Chubb decides within 10 business days once it has everything. If you disagree, complain to Chubb first, then take it to Financial Services Complaints Ltd (FSCL), a free independent scheme that can award up to $500,000, within 3 months of the deadlock letter.
  • The cover is broad, but five traps catch people. If the full outbound fare did not go on the card or points, nothing is covered, and one-way trips never are. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded, with a 2-year look-back that stretches to 5 years for heart, cancer, kidney, lung, brain, neck and back conditions, and the policy wording offers no way to buy cover for them. Overseas medical stops at $5,000,000 and is never paid for treatment in New Zealand. You must be 79 or younger when you pay for the trip to have medical cover. And activities such as diving, horse riding, bungee jumping, heli-skiing and mountain biking off tarmac are excluded.
  • Yes, the policy wording treats COVID-19 as an illness, so the overseas medical section and the trip change and cancellation section respond to it like any other sickness. If you test positive before departure and a doctor confirms you cannot travel, your non-refundable prepaid costs are covered up to $30,000 per person, after a $250 excess. What it does not pay for are border closures or Do Not Travel advisories linked to COVID-19, even if they appear after you booked, and mandatory quarantine. The one carve-back is a valid trip change claim during the trip, where reasonable extra travel, accommodation and meal costs caused by the quarantine are paid.
  • Yes, for recreational skiing and snowboarding overseas, with no paid extension needed. An injury on the slopes is paid under the $5,000,000 overseas medical section after a $250 excess, and the $2,000,000 personal liability cover applies if you injure another skier. Heli-skiing, ski racing, ski jumping, ski stunting, paraskiing, snowmobiles, bobsleigh and ice hockey are excluded. Your own skis or board are covered as baggage up to $2,500 per item or set, but not while you are using them, and there is no cover for hired gear or an unused lift pass. On a ski trip within New Zealand the card pays no medical costs, so ACC is your cover there.
  • Yes, for trips more than 150 km from home, which few New Zealand cards offer. To qualify, spend $500 or more on accommodation, or pay the full outbound flight, cruise, bus or train ticket, with the card or points. A domestic trip then gets $30,000 per person cancellation and trip change cover, flight delay cover from 4 hours ($650 per person), $20,000 of baggage cover and $2,000,000 of personal liability. Medical costs are not covered in New Zealand, because the medical section only pays overseas. A weekend 100 km down the road gets nothing, so measure the distance before you count on it.
  • For most overseas trips where the full outbound fare goes on the card, the Platinum Card cover is enough, with $5,000,000 of medical cover and $30,000 of cancellation per person. You still need a standalone policy in four cases. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, the card excludes it and offers no way to add it. If you are 80 or older when you pay for the trip, there is no medical cover at all. If you paid the flights another way, or booked a one-way ticket, nothing switches on. And on a long stay in the United States, where hospital bills climb fast, standalone policies sold in New Zealand usually carry no dollar cap on medical costs.
  • Yes, up to $10,000, but only the deductible (the excess the rental company charges you after damage or theft). You must take the rental company's own insurance or waiver for the whole hire, pay the full hire cost on the card or with Membership Rewards points, keep the hire to 31 days or less and be more than 150 km from home. You must be the nominated driver and aged 21 to 75 when you pay. Campervans and motorhomes are excluded, which rules out the classic South Island road trip, and so is damage on unsealed or private roads. Repair costs above the deductible stay with the rental company's insurer.
