Our take on travel insurance for the Revolut Revolut Card

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No cover on the free Standard card. $1,000,000 overseas medical on Premium. Here's how the plans split before you book. So, you're in a Bali clinic and the front desk asks who's paying: on a Premium, Metal or Ultra plan, Revolut travel insurance (a Chubb group policy) pays emergency treatment up to $1,000,000 on Premium or $2,000,000 on Metal and Ultra, after a $500 or $250 excess (the first slice of each claim you pay yourself). Most cardholders assume any Revolut card insures the trip. It doesn't: cover only switches on when the full return airfare or cruise fare went on a card linked to the paid plan before departure, so a points booking or a one-way ticket leaves you uninsured. Trip length is the next catch, because the policy wording only covers trips of up to 30 days on Premium, 60 on Metal and 90 on Ultra, and pre-existing conditions are excluded on all three. If you're 79 or younger, healthy and away for less than a month, Premium does the job; for a long OE or a medical history, a standalone New Zealand travel policy is the safer buy.

What works on travel
  • Overseas emergency medical up to $1,000,000 on Premium and $2,000,000 on Metal and Ultra, for up to 12 months
  • COVID-19 treated like any other illness for cancellation and overseas medical
  • Trip cancellation up to $10,000 per person on Premium and $20,000 on Metal and Ultra
  • Trips within New Zealand covered too, with $2,000 cancellation and $2,500 luggage on Premium
  • Personal liability up to $2,500,000 on overseas trips
Where travel breaks down
  • No travel insurance at all on the free Standard or the Plus plan
  • The full return fare must go on a Revolut card before departure: points or one-way tickets get no cover
  • Short trip limits of 30 days on Premium, 60 on Metal and 90 on Ultra
  • $500 excess per claim on Premium ($250 on Metal and Ultra) and pre-existing conditions excluded
  • Cover stops the moment the paid plan is cancelled, suspended or changed

What does Revolut Revolut Card Travel Insurance actually cover?

Cover only exists if the full return fare went on a Revolut card linked to a paid plan. A fare paid with points or another card leaves the cancellation uninsured.

Deductible : $500

Capped at $10,000 per person on Premium and $20,000 on Metal and Ultra for non-refundable, unused deposits, excursions, travel and accommodation paid in advance. It pays when you cancel, cut short or change a trip for a listed reason, such as illness, injury or death, redundancy, jury service, a cancelled transport service or a natural disaster. COVID-19 is treated like any other illness. A $500 excess applies on Premium, $250 on Metal and Ultra.

What's covered
  • Cancellation before departure
  • Curtailment (cutting the trip short and returning home)
  • Trip changes after departure
  • Illness, injury or death of you, a travelling companion or a close relative
  • Redundancy, revoked armed services or emergency services leave, jury service
  • Transport cancelled by strike, adverse weather or mechanical breakdown
  • Natural disaster at the destination or at home, or a natural disaster Do Not Travel warning issued after booking
What's not covered
  • Change of mind or disinclination to travel
  • Pre-existing medical conditions (unless the relative's death was not from a terminal illness)
  • Additional travel or accommodation expenses
  • Government restrictions, border closures and mandatory quarantine (except listed cases)
  • Work commitments and financial circumstances
  • Insolvency of a travel provider
  • Foreseeable circumstances at the time of booking
Capped at $1,000,000 on Premium, not unlimited. ACC and the public health system pay nothing overseas, so anything above the cap is yours.

Repatriation and evacuation are capped at $250,000 on every plan, inside the overseas medical limit. How to make a Revolut Card insurance claim

1

Step 1: Call Chubb Assistance before treatment overseas

If you are hurt or ill overseas, call Chubb Assistance on +64 9 374 1774 before you seek treatment, or ask someone to call for you. The policy wording lets Chubb limit medical costs if no reasonable attempt was made to call first, so keep the call log. Report any theft to the local police, and any lost or delayed bag to the airline, and get a written report.

2

Step 2: Lodge the claim with proof the fare went on your Revolut card

Lodge online at chubbclaims.co.nz, call 0800 600 604 or email cardinsuranceservices.ANZ@chubb.com, quoting your plan's policy number. Send itemised bills, receipts, any police or airline report, and the Revolut statement showing the full return fare (or the whole rental) was charged to a card linked to your Premium, Metal or Ultra plan. The excess ($500 on Premium, $250 on Metal and Ultra) is deducted. Chubb decides within 10 business days once it has all the information.

3

Step 3: If Chubb says no, take it to FSCL

Start with Chubb's Complaints and Customer Resolution Service on +64 9 377 1459 or Complaints.NZ@chubb.com. If it is not resolved within two months, or you receive a deadlock letter, you have three months to refer it to Financial Services Complaints Ltd (FSCL) on 0800 347 257 or fscl.org.nz. FSCL is free and independent, and can award up to $500,000.

FAQ

What people ask about the Revolut Revolut Card

  • You need a paid Premium, Metal or Ultra plan first: the free Standard and the Plus plans include no travel insurance. For an overseas trip, you then pay the full return airfare or cruise fare with a card linked to your Revolut account before you leave New Zealand. For a trip within New Zealand, paying $500 or more on accommodation, or the full return fare, with the card does it. There is no registration step. You must be a New Zealand resident, 79 or younger when you make the purchase, and the plan must still be active and paid up when something goes wrong. A one-way ticket, or a fare paid with points, gives no cover.
  • The plan member is covered, along with a spouse, de facto or civil union partner and dependent children, as long as they travel with the plan member on every part of the trip. Dependent children means children aged 18 or under, full-time students aged 24 or under, or a child of any age who cannot support themselves. Each covered person gets their own limits, and the excess applies to each of them for each event. Everyone must be a New Zealand resident and 79 or younger when the travel purchase is made. A partner travelling separately, or a child flying out a week later, is not covered.
  • Yes, on Premium, Metal and Ultra: up to $4,000 on an overseas hire and $3,000 on a hire in New Zealand. It reimburses the excess the rental company charges after collision damage, fire, malicious damage or theft, so it is an excess-reimbursement benefit, not a damage waiver. You must pay the entire rental, including the rental company's own damage cover, with a card linked to your paid plan, hire for less than 30 days and be a nominated driver. Sedans, hatchbacks, station wagons and SUVs qualify; campervans, motorhomes and vans do not. The policy excess of $500 on Premium, or $250 on Metal and Ultra, comes off the claim.
  • In an emergency overseas, call Chubb Assistance on +64 9 374 1774 before you get treatment, because the policy wording lets Chubb limit costs if you did not try to call first. For everything else, lodge the claim online at chubbclaims.co.nz or call Chubb on 0800 600 604, and tell Chubb as soon as reasonably practicable. Send itemised medical bills, receipts, any police or airline report, and the Revolut statement showing the return fare went on the card. Chubb decides within 10 business days once it has everything. If you disagree, use Chubb's complaints service first; after a deadlock letter you have three months to take it to Financial Services Complaints Ltd (FSCL), a free independent scheme that can award up to $500,000.
  • Five gaps catch people. First, the free Standard and the Plus plans have no travel insurance at all. Second, a trip whose full return fare did not go on a Revolut card is not covered. Third, pre-existing medical conditions are excluded, and the policy wording offers no way to buy that cover back. Fourth, trips are only covered up to 30 days on Premium, 60 on Metal and 90 on Ultra, and travellers aged 80 or older at booking are not covered. Fifth, there is no medical cover on trips within New Zealand, and activities such as heli-skiing, bungee jumping, scuba diving deeper than 30 metres or motor racing are excluded.
  • Yes, within limits. The policy wording treats COVID-19 like any other illness, so trip cancellation applies if you or a travelling companion catch it and a doctor says you can't travel, and overseas medical pays for treatment when COVID-19 is first diagnosed during the trip. It pays nothing for border closures or Do Not Travel warnings linked to COVID-19, or for mandatory quarantine, except reasonable extra travel or accommodation costs tied to a valid illness claim. Flight delays or cancellations caused by COVID-19 are also excluded from the trip delay benefit.
  • Recreational skiing and snowboarding are not excluded, so on an overseas trip the medical cover pays for a ski injury up to $1,000,000 on Premium or $2,000,000 on Metal and Ultra, and the transfer to hospital sits inside the $250,000 evacuation sub-limit. Heli-skiing, ski-racing, ski-jumping, ski-stunting, paraskiing and skidoo are excluded. Your own skis and boards are only covered if an airline or other carrier loses or damages them, hired gear is excluded, and there is no lift pass refund. On a ski trip within New Zealand, there is no medical cover from the card at all.
  • Yes, with a smaller set of benefits. A domestic trip counts when you stay at least two nights more than 50 km from home, or one night more than 100 km away, for up to 14 days, and you paid $500 or more on accommodation, or the full return fare, with the card. Premium then pays up to $2,000 for cancellation, $2,500 for luggage, $100 for a 6-hour flight delay and $1,000,000 for personal liability, plus $3,000 of rental car excess. Metal and Ultra raise cancellation and luggage to $3,000. There is no medical cover on domestic trips.
  • It depends on your plan: up to 30 consecutive days on Premium, 60 on Metal and 90 on Ultra for an overseas trip, and 14 days for a trip within New Zealand. The policy wording ends the trip once it passes that limit, so a seven-week trip on Premium is mostly uninsured. If you are hospitalised overseas, medical, baggage and liability cover can extend past your return date for up to 12 months, and a delayed public transport return adds up to three days automatically. For a longer trip, upgrade the plan before booking or buy a standalone policy.
  • Only the paid Premium, Metal and Ultra plans include it, under a group policy issued by Chubb Insurance New Zealand. Premium costs $11.99 a month and gives $1,000,000 of overseas medical, $10,000 cancellation and 30-day trips. Metal, at $22.99 a month, doubles the medical cover to $2,000,000, raises cancellation to $20,000 and allows 60-day trips with a $250 excess. Ultra, at $79.99 a month, keeps Metal's limits and stretches trips to 90 days. The Plus plan has no travel insurance, but since 16 March 2026 it carries Chubb's Retail Item Cover, like Premium, Metal and Ultra: 90 days of theft and accidental damage cover on new purchases, plus an extended warranty. The free Standard plan, the card in most people's wallets, has no insurance at all.
