Our take on travel insurance for the BNZ Lite Visa

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Low rate, $10 a year. No travel insurance at all. Here's what that means before you fly. So, you're in a clinic in Bali with a fever and the front desk wants payment up front: the BNZ Lite Visa can settle the bill, but no insurer ever pays you back, and whatever you can't clear by the due date runs at 13.50% p.a. Does paying for the flights with the card switch any cover on? No. Most people assume a credit card brings some protection with it, yet BNZ credit card travel insurance sits only on the bank's premium rewards card, while ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas. A standalone New Zealand travel policy covers the medical bills, cancellations and lost bags this card leaves out, with no condition about which card paid for the trip. If you want a cheap card to spread the cost of everyday purchases, the Lite Visa does that job; if you want the trip itself protected, buy that cover separately before you leave.

What works on travel
  • $10 a year to hold: the account fee is $5 half-yearly
  • 13.50% p.a. purchase rate, BNZ's lowest, with up to 55 days interest free when the full balance is paid by the due date
  • Zero Fraud Liability: BNZ repays transactions you didn't make, as long as you met the card's terms
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay ready: pay with your phone wherever contactless is accepted
Where travel breaks down
  • No complimentary travel insurance: paying for flights or hotels with the card switches on no cover
  • No overseas medical or evacuation cover: ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas
  • No cancellation, delay or luggage cover: a cancelled trip or a lost bag is fully out of pocket
  • No emergency travel assistance line: BNZ lists none for this card
  • 2.25% foreign currency service fee on every overseas purchase
  • Cash from an overseas ATM is a cash advance: interest at 22.95% p.a. runs from the day you withdraw it

Product change rather than closing a card

I suggest you keep your Advantage Classic card at BNZ. If you close it, it is very hard to re-open a Credit Card it as you will be subjected to the current Credit Assessment process which is difficult and intrusive. This goes for any Credit Card at all the other banks. Instead Product change to the BNZ Lite or the Advantage Platinum.

How to contact BNZ Lite Visa assistance?

There is no insurer, policy wording or 24/7 emergency medical line attached to this card: BNZ lists travel insurance and emergency travel assistance as N/A for the Lite Visa. For medical, cancellation and baggage cover overseas, buy a standalone New Zealand travel policy and keep its emergency number with you. The numbers below are BNZ's lines for a lost or stolen card, not an insurance helpline.

What to do if you need travel cover with the Lite Visa

1

Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy as soon as you book

The Lite Visa includes no travel insurance and BNZ lists no emergency travel assistance for it, so arrange a standalone policy whose policy wording (the insurer's full policy document) states its overseas medical, cancellation and baggage limits. Cancellation cover only protects you from the date the policy starts, so buy it when you book, not the week you fly.

2

Step 2: Keep the insurer's emergency number, your receipts and BNZ's card line to hand

Save your travel insurer's 24/7 emergency number and policy number on your phone, and keep itemised medical bills, police or airline reports and booking receipts for any claim. If the Lite Visa goes missing, put a temporary block on it or call BNZ on +64 4 473 5901 from overseas.

3

Step 3: Take a dispute about the card to BNZ, then the Banking Ombudsman Scheme

For a problem with the card or your account (not travel insurance), complain to BNZ on 0800 275 269, or +64 4 931 8209 from overseas. If you're unhappy with how it's handled, BNZ Customer Resolution reviews it for free, and if you still disagree with BNZ's investigation, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme takes it free of charge on 0800 805 950.

FAQ

What people ask about the BNZ Lite Visa

  • You can't, because the BNZ Lite Visa comes with no complimentary travel insurance to activate. BNZ's own comparison table lists international travel insurance and emergency travel assistance as N/A for this card. On New Zealand cards that do carry cover, it switches on when you charge prepaid travel costs (flights, accommodation, tours) to the card before you leave: any amount on some cards, $500 or half the trip on others. Paying for your flights with the Lite Visa triggers nothing of the kind, since there is no insurer and no policy wording (the insurer's full policy document) behind it. If you want cover, buy a standalone travel policy when you book, and use the Lite Visa for what it was built for: a low purchase rate and lean fees.
  • Nobody, because the Lite Visa carries no complimentary insurance at all. There is no cover for you as the cardholder, none for an additional cardholder on the account (BNZ charges $1.50 half-yearly for that second card) and none for a partner or children travelling with you, whoever paid for the trip. That matters most for families, because New Zealand credit cards that do include travel cover often extend it to a spouse and dependent children travelling with the cardholder. Each traveller in your group needs to be named on a standalone travel policy, and a family policy can cover two adults and their children on one premium. Check the age limits for children and how pre-existing medical conditions are handled before you buy.
  • No. The BNZ Lite Visa has no rental vehicle excess cover, either for a hire car overseas or for a hire car or campervan in New Zealand. The excess is the amount the rental company charges you after damage to or theft of the vehicle, and hire companies commonly set it in the thousands of dollars. Some New Zealand credit cards reimburse it when the hire is paid on the card, but paying with the Lite Visa gives you nothing back. You can close the gap two ways: take the rental company's excess-reduction option at the desk, or buy a standalone rental excess policy before you travel. Check your limit too, because any bond the desk holds comes off your available credit, and the Lite Visa's minimum limit is $500.
  • There is nothing to claim on: the Lite Visa carries no travel insurance, purchase cover or phone cover, so no insurer handles claims for it. If something goes wrong overseas, the claim goes to the standalone travel insurer you bought a policy from, with itemised medical bills, a police report or the airline's property irregularity report, and your receipts. Problems with the card itself go to BNZ: call 0800 735 901, 24 hours a day, or +64 4 473 5901 from overseas if it is lost or stolen. For a complaint, call BNZ on 0800 275 269, and if you're unhappy with how it's handled, BNZ Customer Resolution reviews it for free. After that, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, a free independent dispute resolution scheme, takes it on 0800 805 950.
  • The Lite Visa carries no complimentary travel insurance, so there is no overseas medical, cancellation or baggage cover, and no purchase protection or extended warranty. That means no emergency medical or evacuation cover overseas, where ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment. There is no trip cancellation, travel delay or missed connection cover, and no rental car excess, ski or snowboard cover, personal liability or mobile phone insurance. BNZ lists no emergency travel assistance for the card either. What the card does protect is narrower: the Zero Fraud Liability guarantee repays transactions you didn't make, and NetPromise helps with online orders that never arrive. For anything travel-related, pair the card with a standalone policy bought before you leave.
  • No. The Lite Visa has no snow-sports cover of any kind: no ski injury medical costs, no mountain rescue, no cover for your own or hired gear and no refund of unused lift passes. There is no snow-sports extension to buy either, because no insurance policy sits behind the card. On a ski trip to Japan, a fracture treated overseas quickly reaches five figures, and ACC doesn't pay for treatment overseas. Skiing at home is different: ACC covers treatment for an accident on a New Zealand ski field. For an overseas snow trip, buy a standalone travel policy and add its snow-sports option before you leave, since the option can't be added once you're hurt.
  • Yes. The Lite Visa includes no travel insurance, so a trip with this card alone leaves you exposed to the big costs: hospital bills, an air ambulance home and non-refundable bookings. ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, and a few nights in a Honolulu hospital commonly run to six figures. The card adds its own costs abroad too: a 2.25% foreign currency service fee on every overseas purchase, and cash from an overseas ATM counts as a cash advance, charged at 22.95% p.a. from the day you take it out. A standalone New Zealand travel policy covers medical treatment, cancellation and baggage, without any condition about which card paid for the trip.
  • No. The Lite Visa includes no mobile phone insurance, and no purchase cover or extended warranty either. If the phone you paid for with the card cracks its screen or gets stolen, the repair or replacement is entirely on you, and a flagship screen repair commonly costs several hundred dollars. NetPromise won't help here: it only covers an online order that never arrives or a return that isn't refunded, reported within 30 days of your statement. For a phone bought from a New Zealand retailer, the Consumer Guarantees Act still covers faults, but not drops, theft or loss. For those, list the phone on your contents insurance or take out a dedicated phone policy.
  • The BNZ Lite Visa charges 13.50% p.a. on purchases and 22.95% p.a. on cash advances, according to BNZ's comparison table. Purchases get up to 55 days interest free, but only when you pay the full balance shown on your statement by the due date; pay less and you lose the interest-free period on that balance and on new purchases until your next statement closes. Cash advances never get an interest-free period, so interest starts the day you take the cash out. The account fee is $5 half-yearly, or $10 a year, and the minimum monthly repayment is 2% of the balance or $25, whichever is more. None of this buys any insurance: travel cover has to come from a separate policy.
  • Not the Lite Visa. Among BNZ's personal credit cards, complimentary international travel insurance comes only with the bank's premium rewards card, which charges a higher account fee and needs a higher minimum limit. BNZ's comparison table shows travel insurance and emergency travel assistance as N/A for the Lite Visa. So if you searched for BNZ Visa travel insurance because you hold the Lite Visa, the short answer is that you have none. You have two options: buy a standalone New Zealand travel policy for each trip, which covers overseas medical, cancellation and luggage whichever card pays, or apply for a card that includes cover and read its policy wording for the activation rule before relying on it.
