Our take on travel insurance for the ANZ Visa Debit

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

$0 card fee. No travel insurance. You come down with a fever in Bali and the clinic wants payment up front: the ANZ Visa Debit pays that bill straight from your own account, and nothing ever pays you back, because the card carries no overseas medical, evacuation, cancellation or luggage cover. Does paying for the flights on it switch any cover on? No. Most people assume the bank card that paid for the trip brings some protection with it, but ANZ credit card travel insurance sits on one card only, the Airpoints Visa Platinum, and ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas. A standalone New Zealand travel policy covers those bills with no rule about which card paid for the trip. If you only need a way to spend your own money abroad, the card does that, with a 1.3% currency conversion charge on foreign transactions; if you want the trip itself protected, buy a policy the day you book.

What works on travel
  • No annual card fee: the ANZ Visa Debit costs $0 a year to hold, and a MyPhoto design is free too
  • Spends your own money: no interest, no credit limit and no bill waiting after the trip
  • No ANZ fee on overseas ATM withdrawals, with a daily overseas ATM limit of $3,000
  • Visa Zero Liability: protection against unauthorised transactions made on the card
Where travel breaks down
  • No complimentary travel insurance: paying for flights or hotels with the card switches on no cover
  • No overseas medical or evacuation cover: ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas
  • No cancellation, travel delay or luggage cover: a cancelled trip or a lost bag is fully out of pocket
  • 1.3% currency conversion charge on foreign transactions, online and overseas, where ANZ's personal credit cards charge 0%

Is there anything to claim on the ANZ Visa Debit?

1

Step 1: Know there is no insurance claim to lodge

The ANZ Visa Debit draws on your own everyday or savings account and includes no complimentary travel, rental or purchase cover, so there is no insurer, no emergency assistance line and no claim form. A hospital bill in Bali, a cancelled flight or a damaged hire car stays with you unless you hold your own policy.

2

Step 2: For a lost card or a payment problem, contact ANZ

Cancel a lost or stolen card online at anz.co.nz, or put a temporary block on it in the ANZ goMoney app or Internet Banking. You can also call 0800 269 296 in New Zealand, or +64 4 470 3142 from overseas (Mon to Fri 8am to 8pm, Sat and Sun 8am to 6pm). If a complaint stays unresolved with ANZ, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme reviews it free of charge.

3

Step 3: For real cover, buy a standalone travel policy before you leave

Because the card insures nothing, take out a standalone travel insurance policy when you book, and keep its policy number and 24/7 emergency line with you on the trip. Any medical, cancellation or luggage claim then goes to that insurer, not to ANZ.

FAQ

What people ask about the ANZ Visa Debit

  • There is nothing to activate, because the ANZ Visa Debit comes with no complimentary travel insurance. On New Zealand cards that do carry cover, it switches on when you charge some or all of your prepaid travel costs to the card before you leave, and at ANZ that cover is reserved for one credit card, the Airpoints Visa Platinum. Paying for flights, a hotel or a tour with the Visa Debit takes the money from your everyday account, but it gives you no overseas medical, cancellation or baggage cover at any amount. There is no registration, no cover check and no policy wording (the insurer's full policy document) to read. If you are travelling, buy a standalone travel policy when you book, and treat this card as a way to pay rather than a way to insure the trip.
  • Nobody, because no complimentary insurance policy is attached to the ANZ Visa Debit. There is no travel cover for the cardholder, a partner or dependent children, and no purchase cover on what any of them buy with the card. ANZ issues the card from age 13, so a teenager heading overseas on a school or sports trip with their own Visa Debit carries no cover through it either. Since no policy exists, there is no definition of covered persons to check before a trip. If your family is travelling overseas, a standalone travel policy can usually list a partner and children on one policy, and your home contents insurance is the cover that responds to theft of things you bought.
  • No. The ANZ Visa Debit has no rental vehicle excess cover (the benefit that pays back what a hire company charges you after damage or theft), either for hires overseas or for hire cars and campervans rented in New Zealand. If the vehicle is damaged or stolen, the excess set in your rental agreement is yours to pay in full, and on a debit card that money comes straight out of your account. Hire companies commonly set the excess in the thousands of dollars. Before you collect the keys, take the hire company's excess reduction or buy a standalone rental excess policy, and check that campervans are included if you need one.
  • There is no insurance claim to make, because the ANZ Visa Debit carries no complimentary travel, rental or purchase cover, so no insurer or claims administrator stands behind it. For a lost or stolen card, cancel it online at anz.co.nz or put a temporary block on it in the ANZ goMoney app, or call ANZ on 0800 269 296, or +64 4 470 3142 from overseas. If a complaint about the card itself stays unresolved with ANZ, you can take it to the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, a free independent service. For a hospital bill, a cancelled trip or lost luggage, you claim on your own standalone travel policy instead, so carry its policy number and emergency line with you.
  • The ANZ Visa Debit carries no complimentary insurance, so it covers none of the risks of a trip: no overseas medical, evacuation, cancellation, travel delay, luggage or personal liability cover, abroad or within New Zealand. There is no rental vehicle excess cover and no snow sports cover, and on the shopping side no purchase protection, extended warranty or mobile phone cover. The question of pre-existing medical conditions never even comes up, because there is no medical cover to exclude them from. ACC and the public health system don't pay for treatment overseas, so a few nights in a Honolulu hospital would land entirely on you. Pair the card with a standalone travel policy for any trip abroad, and declare any medical condition when you buy it.
  • No. Skiing and snowboarding are not covered because the ANZ Visa Debit has no travel insurance at all, so there is no snow sports benefit, free or paid, to switch on. A fall on a groomed run in Japan, a helicopter transfer off the mountain, the hospital bill after it, a broken board and an unused lift pass all stay with you. ACC doesn't pay for treatment overseas, and a fracture treated in Japan quickly reaches five figures. Paying for the lift pass in yen on the card also adds a 1.3% currency conversion charge. For the cover itself, buy a standalone travel policy with its snow sports option before you fly, and read whether it reaches beyond marked ski-field boundaries.
  • Yes, for every overseas trip. The ANZ Visa Debit pays for the trip from your own account, but it does not insure it: there is no overseas medical, cancellation, evacuation or luggage cover. That matters because ACC and New Zealand's public health system don't pay for treatment overseas, and an air ambulance from Bali to New Zealand commonly costs six figures. A standalone New Zealand travel policy fills those gaps with no condition on how you paid for the trip. Buy it when you book rather than the week you fly, so cancellation cover is already in place if something goes wrong before departure.
  • No. The ANZ Visa Debit does not include mobile phone insurance, so a cracked screen, water damage or a stolen handset is not covered, even when the phone or its monthly plan is paid on the card. There is no purchase protection window either, so a new phone stolen a week after you bought it is not reimbursed. Visa Zero Liability protects you against unauthorised transactions on the card, but it does not pay for the phone itself. A flagship screen repair commonly costs several hundred dollars, so check whether your home contents policy covers portable items away from home, or list the phone as a specified item.
  • Yes. The ANZ Visa Debit works anywhere Visa is accepted, in shops, online and at ATMs overseas, using money from your ANZ account. ANZ adds a 1.3% currency conversion charge to every foreign transaction, online or overseas, while its personal credit cards charge 0%. ANZ itself charges no fee for an overseas ATM withdrawal, though the bank that owns the machine may add its own, and the daily overseas ATM limit is $3,000. If a shop or ATM offers to charge you in New Zealand dollars, choose the local currency instead so its own exchange rate does not apply. Low fees or not, spending abroad is not cover: the card still carries no travel insurance.
