Our take on travel insurance for the ANZ Low Rate Visa

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

$0 annual fee. Zero travel insurance. Here's what that means before you book. So, you're at a clinic in Bali with a fever, and the front desk wants a card before anyone sees you: the ANZ Low Rate Visa will pay the bill, but nothing on the card pays you back. Most people searching for ANZ Visa travel insurance assume every ANZ credit card carries some. It doesn't: ANZ attaches its complimentary cover to one premium card only, and the Low Rate Visa has no policy wording (the insurer's full policy document for a card's complimentary travel cover) behind it at all. ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system don't pay for treatment overseas. A standalone New Zealand travel policy covers medical, cancellation and luggage with no rule about how you paid for the trip. If you use this card abroad for its 0% currency conversion charge, that saving is real, but budget for a travel policy as well and buy it the day you book.

What works on travel
  • 0% currency conversion charge on purchases made overseas or online in a foreign currency
  • $0 annual fee and $0 for an additional card, so the card costs nothing to keep for travel spending
  • No ANZ fee on a cash advance from an overseas ATM, although the ATM owner may charge one and cash advance interest applies
  • No activation rule to get wrong: there is no cover to switch on, so you know to insure the trip yourself
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas emergency medical: ACC and the public health system pay nothing abroad, so a hospital bill is yours
  • No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are lost if illness or a family emergency stops the trip
  • No evacuation or repatriation: an air ambulance from Bali to New Zealand commonly costs six figures
  • No luggage, delay, travel documents or personal liability cover, overseas or on trips within New Zealand

No rewards on the no-fee card

I'm looking into rewards earning credit cards as I've already got a low rate ANZ cc with no annual fee but I get no rewards or bonuses for it.

What to do if something goes wrong with the ANZ Low Rate Visa

1

Step 1: Know the card has no insurer to claim from

The ANZ Low Rate Visa comes with no complimentary travel, rental or purchase insurance, so there is no claim form, no emergency assistance line and no insurer to call. A hospital bill in Tokyo, a cancelled trip or a damaged hire car stays with you unless you hold your own policy.

2

Step 2: Report a lost or stolen card to ANZ, day or night

Call 0800 658 044 in New Zealand or +64 9 522 3010 from overseas, 24 hours a day, or cancel the card in goMoney or Internet Banking and order a replacement ($5 per card). If a complaint about the card stays unresolved with ANZ, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme reviews it free of charge.

3

Step 3: Insure the trip with a standalone policy before you leave

Buy a standalone travel insurance policy when you book, and rely on your home contents policy for what you buy. Any claim then goes to that insurer, so save its policy number and 24/7 emergency line on your phone before you fly.

FAQ

What people ask about the ANZ Low Rate Visa

  • You can't, because the ANZ Low Rate Visa comes with no complimentary travel insurance to activate. On New Zealand cards that do include cover, activation means charging a set share of your prepaid travel costs to the card before you leave, and ANZ keeps that cover for a single premium card. Putting flights, a hotel or a hire car on the Low Rate Visa spreads the cost at ANZ's lowest purchase rate, but it buys no overseas medical, cancellation or luggage cover at any spend level. There is no policy wording, no cover check and no extension to purchase through the card. Buy a standalone travel policy when you book the trip, and keep the card for paying.
  • No one, because the ANZ Low Rate Visa has no complimentary insurance policy behind it. The primary cardholder, an additional cardholder, a partner and dependent children all travel uninsured as far as the card is concerned, and nothing anyone buys with it is covered either. An additional card costs $0 on this account, which makes it easy to share the card with a partner, but that second card carries no cover. With no policy, there are no age limits, family limits or definitions to check. For a family trip overseas, a standalone travel policy can usually name everyone on one policy, while your home contents insurance is what responds to theft of things you bought.
  • No. The ANZ Low Rate Visa has no rental vehicle excess cover (the benefit that pays back what a hire company charges you after damage or theft), so the excess in your rental agreement is yours to pay in full, abroad or in New Zealand. Hire companies commonly set that excess in the thousands of dollars. Paying an overseas hire company on this card avoids a currency conversion charge, since ANZ charges 0%, but it does nothing for the excess. Before you collect the keys in Rarotonga or Honolulu, either take the hire company's excess reduction or buy a standalone rental excess policy, and check that it covers the vehicle type you are hiring, campervans included.
  • There is no insurance claim to make on the ANZ Low Rate Visa, because the card has no complimentary travel, rental or purchase cover and therefore no insurer or claims administrator. If the card itself is lost or stolen, call ANZ on 0800 658 044 in New Zealand or +64 9 522 3010 from overseas, 24 hours a day, or cancel it in goMoney or Internet Banking. Card and account questions go to 0800 269 277. If a complaint about the card stays unresolved with ANZ, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme reviews it free of charge. For a medical bill, a cancelled trip or lost luggage, the claim goes to your own standalone travel insurer, so carry its policy number and emergency line.
  • The ANZ Low Rate Visa carries no complimentary insurance, so it covers none of the risks of a trip or a purchase. That means no overseas medical, evacuation, cancellation, travel delay, luggage, travel documents or personal liability cover, overseas or on trips within New Zealand. There is no rental vehicle excess cover and no snow sports cover, and on the shopping side no purchase protection, extended warranty, refund cover, price guarantee or mobile phone cover. ACC and the public health system don't pay for treatment overseas, so a few nights in a Honolulu hospital would be your bill alone. Pre-existing conditions, age limits and trip-length caps only come into play once you buy a standalone policy, so read those terms there.
  • No. The ANZ Low Rate Visa has no travel insurance, so there is no snow sports cover to rely on, whether you stay on groomed runs or head into the backcountry. A sled ride off the mountain, the X-rays and treatment that follow, a snapped board and the unused days on your lift pass all stay with you. ACC doesn't pay for treatment overseas, and a fracture treated in Japan quickly reaches five figures. The card's 0% currency conversion charge does make paying for lift passes and hire in yen cheaper, which is a genuine saving. For the cover itself, buy a standalone travel policy with its snow sports option before you fly, and check how far beyond marked runs it reaches.
  • Yes, for every trip overseas. The ANZ Low Rate Visa is built to keep borrowing cheap, with up to 55 interest-free days on purchases and ANZ's lowest purchase rate, but it insures nothing on the trip you pay for with it. There is no overseas medical, cancellation, evacuation or luggage cover, and ACC and New Zealand's public health system don't pay for treatment overseas. An air ambulance from Bali to New Zealand commonly costs six figures. A standalone New Zealand travel policy covers those risks with no condition on which card paid for the trip. Buy it as soon as you book, so cancellation cover is in place before anything can go wrong.
  • No. The ANZ Low Rate Visa includes no mobile phone insurance, so a cracked screen, liquid damage or a stolen handset is not covered, even if you bought the phone on the card and are paying it off at the card's purchase rate. There is no purchase protection window or extended warranty either, so a phone stolen soon after purchase, or failing after its manufacturer's warranty ends, is not reimbursed by the card. The Consumer Guarantees Act still gives you rights against the retailer if the phone is faulty, but not if you drop it. A flagship screen repair commonly costs several hundred dollars, so check whether your contents policy covers portable items away from home.
  • No currency conversion charge applies: ANZ's fees guide sets it at 0% for personal ANZ credit cards, the Low Rate Visa included, on foreign currency transactions made online and overseas. Those transactions are converted to New Zealand dollars at the exchange rate set by Visa. ANZ also charges no fee for a cash advance from an overseas ATM, though the ATM's owner may add its own fee and cash advance interest applies. One habit protects the 0% rate: when a shop or ATM abroad offers to charge you in New Zealand dollars, choose the local currency instead. Remember that cheap spending is not cover, since the card still has no travel insurance.
